FISHING TRIP TO REMEMBER

West Tennessee Memphis Kids In Nature treated the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson/ OUTDOORS Brownsville Unit to an exciting fishing excursion that many of them will with Ray Jones remember forever. Send photos to: MKN is an organization that takes Memphis and some West Tennessee numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 youth on outdoor adventures to expose them to the Great Outdoors. On this trip there were several club members who caught fish for the first time ever. The excitement on their faces each time they landed one was worth a thousand words. Some caught lots of small fish, some caught turdles, some caught a few large fish, some caught no fish at all but, all had a great time outdoors at the lake.

It’s a Crime to Be Unhealthy! #7 of 10 Articles by Well Connected Communities Coalition UT-TSU Extension Madison County By Susan Holloway, Program Assistant WCC

Have you ever wondered about those recommendations called Dietary Guidelines? You know, the ones we quote that tell which foods are best for us and how much of each we should eat each day. You can find new publications with the latest information online at DietaryGuidelines.gov and it is titled Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025. It is 165 pages in length. Yes, it is rewritten every five years. This is their ninth edition meaning the government has researched, analyzed, debated how we should eat for over 45 years. Many agencies that are Agriculture, Health, Human Services, Engineering, Science, Medical, etc. designated hundreds of employees, and millions of dollars to develop these recommendations. Should we not hear what they say and try to follow their suggestions? The following are highlights of Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025: 1. Foods and beverages that people consume have a profound impact on their health. 2. Scientific connection between food and health has been well documented for many decades, with substantial and increasingly robust evidence showing that a healthy lifestyle—including following a healthy dietary pattern— can help people achieve and maintain good health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases throughout all stages of the lifespan: infancy and toddlerhood, childhood and adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy and lactation, and older adulthood. 3. The most common illnesses related to nutrition we have in America are: *¾ of us weigh too much, ½ of children, teens, persons ages 45-59 are Obese. *Heart Disease is #1 while 7% of children have high cholesterol. *High Blood Pressure and High Total Cholesterol have greatest numbers in females, blacks, elderly. *35 million people have Diabetes in America. *Most common types of cancer are Colorectal in men and Breast in women. More than 1.3 million people are living with colorectal cancer. *70 million people have reduced bone and muscle strength called Osteoporosis. Especially in the elderly. Question: How do you keep from being one of these numbers? Answer: Refer back to my first highlight -- Foods and beverages that people consume have a profound impact on their health. 4. Try the MyPlate.gov A healthy eating routine is important at every stage of life and can have positive effects that add up over time. It is important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy or fortified soy alternatives, and protein foods. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients. That means avoiding high sugar, high fat, and high salt foods. Make every bite count. Your body will appreciate it.

And Your Point is . . . BROOKS DELIVERS JUNETEENTH SPEECH

Jackson, TN - On June 18, 2021, five-term, Jackson City Councilman, Ernest Brooks II, District Three, served as the keynote speaker during the First Annual Juneteenth Celebration Luncheon held at the Kellogg’s Corporation. Kellogg’s, joined other national corporations, such as, Amazon and Facebook to educate their employees about Juneteenth and encourage community discussions and reconciliation. The Kellogg’s African American Resource Group (KAARG), a diverse leadership organization of professionals across the network, sponsored the event which also included poems, songs, and a brief history of Juneteenth. According to Diane Holman, a Quality Control Executive, “We would like to thank Councilman Brooks for his leadership and his engaging address to our employees as we continue our mission of educating the site, furthering the professional growth of our members, and partnering within the community”. It was a fitting celebration because President Joe Biden signed legislation into law the day beforeestablishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day -- a US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Locally, Jackson Mayor Scott Conger announced that the City of Jackson wouldrecognize Juneteenth and closed all city offices. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War. It took Union troops more than two years to finish travel throughout the southern United States to inform hundreds of thousands of former slaves of Lincoln’s executive order. The December 6, 1865, ratification of the 13th Amendment made slavery illegal throughout the nation. The holiday is the first federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Day in 1983. The legislation, which was passed by Congress on Wednesday, gained momentum following Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year. It was also spurred after Democrats won the White House and control of the House of Representatives and the US Senate.

“While I was honored to speak during the luncheon, it is not enough to just commemorate the holiday, but we must use it as a day of reflection, dialogue and civic engagement. I encourage all citizens to become more aware of the significance of this celebration in American history”, said Brooks. 07-01 -21 CSENEWS P.9

Madison County Sheriff John Mehr reports that Madison County Deputies captured a suspect in a carjacking and three armed robberies on Sunday. The suspect is currently in custody at CJC. On Sunday afternoon Madison County Dispatch put out A BOLO (Be on the Lookout) for a white 2021 Lexus reportedly involved in an armed robbery in West Tennessee, near Exit 108. At approximately 4:45 pm, Madison County and Tennessee Highway Patrol spotted the vehicle near Exit 76, on I-40. After a pursuit, Madison County Deputies stopped the vehicle near 1529 Westover Road. Deputies, who observed a shotgun in the passenger seat, took the suspect into custody, unharmed, at that location. Deputies later learned that the Lexus had been carjacked in Huntsville, Alabama, and that the vehicle and suspect are believed to also have committed armed robberies earlier in the day in Fairview, Tennessee and Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, along I-40, as well as Exit 108. Former West TN Healthcare employee allegedly attempted to steal over $355,000

June 23, 2021 Diamond Williams- wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — A former West Tennessee Healthcare employee is facing a federal indictment after she allegedly took money from a local hospital. “On May 28th, 2020, our hospital leadership here at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital was notified that an employee, Melanie Haste, was involved in some alleged misconduct. Our leadership at that point began taking immediate investigative action,” said Amy Garner, chief compliance and communications officer for West Tennessee Healthcare. Haste worked as a paralegal for West Tennessee Healthcare from 2003-2008. In 2012, she then began working in the risk management department until her termination on June 1, 2020. The indictment says during her time as Director of Risk Management, Haste had access to the West Tennessee Healthcare and hospital’s bank accounts. The indictment says she would direct payments from company accounts and insurance proceeds and deposit payments to herself and others. Direct payments were made to credit card accounts of herself and family members, including her husband. If charged with counts one through seven, Haste could face up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, a five year period of supervised release, and a special assessment of one hundred dollars.

Eliga Glenn (pictured right) says he was choked by Humboldt Mayor Marvin Sikes

“I had tried several times to set an appointment with the Mayor,” Glenn stated in the report. Next, according to the report filed by Glenn, he exited the building and got into his vehicle to leave, but began a conversation with a Mr. Joshua Sparks. It was at that point when Glenn says he was approached by Mayor Sikes. The mayor approached the vehicle “in an aggressive manor” according to Sparks, who says he stepped away for the vehicle as the two men became involved in a “verbal dispute.” According to the report taken by Sgt. Laura Cano, Glenn says he was told by Mayor Sike as he approached his vehicle, that he was not going to have a meeting with him at which point Glenn as to have Mayor Sikes “put on paper that he was not going to help with the preservation of the Booker T Motel.” Sgt. Cano’s report went on to state that Glenn then exited his vehicle. That’s when he was allegedly assaulted by the Mayor. Glenn says the Mayor attempted to choke him and using both hands, shoved him into his truck. Glenn also told the officer that HPD assistant chief, Daniel Ables was present during the incident and “attempted to diffuse the situation by asking Glenn to clam down and leave the scene.” He also stated that he asked Glenn to leave the property several times “after belligerent behavior.” Glenn says as a result of the encounter, his blood sugar level elavated to 400. Sparks later informed officers that he had witnessed the entire incident, however he only had video footage of what happened after the alleged altercation. The report continued to state that a portion of the video revealed Mayor Sikes stating to Glenn “You spit in my face.” The incident is still under investigation.

DRUNK DRIVER CALLS POLICE ON HIMSELF FOR HELP WITH FLAT TIRE

06/25/2021 - Jason Steen - www.scoopnashville.com 27-year-old Nathaniel Miller had a flat tire on I-24 at exit 49 downtown. He surveyed the situation and called Metro Nashville Police for assistance. Once they arrived, he admitted he had been drinking, and it took several officers to physically pull him into the car as he refused to be taken into custody. Shortly after the “last call” at most bars on Thursday morning, police received a call for service for a stranded motorist. On arrival, they met with Nathaniel Miller, who explained he had a flat tire. During the interaction, officers noticed he had slurred speech and reeked of alcohol. He admitted to drinking prior to driving and refused all testing. Nathaniel Miller (MNPD) Once officers told Miller he was under arrest for DUI, he became combative and would not place his hands behind his back, refused to be placed in the car, and wasn’t going down without a fight, as he just wanted his tire to be changed. Multiple officers were able to get him cuffed and then pull him into the rear of a patrol vehicle in order to eventually transport him to booking. Nathaniel A. Miller, 27, was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail, charged with driving under the influence, violation of the implied consent law, and resisting arrest. He is free on pre-trial release. 07-01-21 CSENEWS P.11

Poetic Expressions A Fable

BY ETHERIDGE KNIGHT Once upon a today and yesterday and nevermore there were 7 men and women all locked / up in prison cells. Now these 7 men and women were innocent of any crimes; they were in prison because their skins were black. Day after day, the prisoners paced their cells, pining for their freedom. And the non-black jailers would laugh at the prisoners and beat them with sticks and throw their food on the floor. Finally, prisoner #1 said, “I will educate myself and emulate the non-colored people. That is the way to freedom—c’mon, you guys, and follow me.” “Hell, no,” said prisoner #2. “The only way to get free is to pray to my god and he will deliver you like he delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, so unite and follow me.” “Bullshit,” said prisoner #3. “The only way / out is thru this tunnel i’ve been quietly digging, so c’mon, and follow me.” “Uh-uh,” said prisoner #4, “that’s too risky. The only right / way is to follow all the rules and don’t make the non-colored people angry, so c’mon brothers and sisters and unite behind me.” “Fuck you!” said prisoner #5, “The only way / out is to shoot our way out, if all of you get / together behind me.” “No,” said prisoner #6, “all of you are incorrect; you have not analyzed the political situation by my scientific method and historical meemeejeebee. All we have to do is wait long enough and the bars will bend from their own inner rot. That is the only way.” “Are all of you crazy,” cried prisoner #7. “I’ll get out by myself, by ratting on the rest of you to the non-colored people. That is the way, that is the only way!” “No-no,” they / all cried, “come and follow me. I have the / way, the only way to freedom.” And so they argued, and to this day they are still arguing; and to this day they are still in their prison cells, their stomachs / trembling with fear. “A Fable” from The Essential Etheridge Knight, by Etheridge Knight, © 1986. ETHERIDGE KNIGHT (1931–1991) was born in Corinth, Mississippi. He dropped out of high school while still a teenager and joined the army to serve in the Korea war. Wounded by shrapnel during the conflict, he returned to civilian life with an injury that led to drug addiction. Knight was convicted of robbery in 1960 and served eight years in the Indiana State Prison. According to Terrance Hayes, Knight’s “biography is a story of restless Americanness, African Americanness, and poetry. It has some Faulknerian family saga in it, some midcentury migration story, lots of masculine tragedy, lots of soul-of-the-artist lore.” While in prison, Knight began to write poetry, and he corresponded with, and received visits from, Black literary luminaries such as Dudley Randall and Gwendolyn Brooks. His first collection, Poems from Prison (1968) included the following text on its back cover: “I died in Korea from a shrapnel wound, and narcotics resurrected me. I died in 1960 from a prison sentence and poetry brought me back to life.” Knight’s work was immediately lauded as “another excellent example of the powerful truth of blackness in art,” wrote Shirley Lumpkin in the Dictionary of Literary Biography. “His work became important in Afro-American poetry and poetics and in the strain of Anglo-American poetry descended from Walt Whitman.” Knight was married to poet Sonia Sanchez, and both were important members of the poets and artists connected to the Black Arts Movement.

JPD STARTS NEW COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVE

June 29, 2021 WBBJ Staff- wbbjtv.com EAST JACKSON, Tenn. — There’s a new community outreach initiative for the Jackson police department. Tuesday was the first community roll call for the police department at Saint James church. They discussed daily briefings, reports about any stolen vehicles, future initiatives and more. Chief Julian Wiser says community role call gives officers an opportunity to be engaged with the community and help build relationships. Wiser also says these relationships are very important as a stronger community means a stronger police department. “Those relationships are very important because a lot of issues that we deal with at the police department, those are issues we can’t solve a lot of times without community support,” explained Chief Julian Wiser. Wiser says they will attempt to have community roll call once per month.
