‘HAPPY ANTHONY’

By Bill Marable

“It’s Taj Mahal of Prisons” Is it any wonder why the Madison County Commission thumbed their collective noses at the School Board’s $30 million new construction proposal for three schools? NO! It could be that the County Fathers are getting a better bargain in the new jail. And if inmates are industrious, they might pick up a little education during their incarceration. 11

Anthony Lott is a fixture in the Great Out Doors of West Tennessee. You see he works from sun up until sun down with Ray Jones SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO walking from location to numberonecoach@hotmail.com location brightening people’s or 731-694-8614. day. You may see him at any intersection laughing and speaking to everyone he comes into contact with. It is impossible to pass Anthony and not smile back with someone waving to you with a big smile on his face. You can roll out at 6:00, 7:00, or 10:00 o’clock it won’t matter you still gonna see Anthony. Now the funny part about is that it doesn’t matter about the weather; rain, freezing cold, or 100 degrees he is still out there to brighten your day. Most of the time he has some head phones on and bopping to a beat that’s coming through his sound system. One day I asked him why he was so happy all the time and he had a one word reply, he said “Jesus”. Consequently, that full time job he works on pays him very well because the happiness that he possess is far greater than any amount money one can be paid. He works for mother nature by spreading joy and happiness to citizens daily and gets a Blessing in return with an abundant amount of satisfaction and self happiness. When you and the kids make your daily rounds keep your eyes open for someone who might need you to brighten their day like Anthony does. Photo is Anthony Lott between greeting stations.

R&B singerÊR. KellyÊpleaded not guilty on a 13-count indictment in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Tuesday. The indictment includes seven charges related to child pornography, five counts of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The singer appeared before Judge Harry D. Leinenweber in an orange jumpsuit at Dirksen U.S. courthouse in Chicago. Kelly had been held in Metropolitan Correction Center in Chicago since his arrest on Thursday. The judge also denied R. Kelly’s petition for bond and has remanded the singer back to custody. “He is an extreme danger to the community, especially to minor girls,” prosecutors told Leinenweber, according to theÊChicago Sun-Times. They called videos of alleged sexual encounters with underage girls “sadomasochistic abuse,” perÊThe Chicago Tribune,Êand argued against granting bail to the singer, claiming that he is a flight risk. “The defendant can entice girls to his own doorstep,” prosecutors added in their argument against electronic monitoring. “He doesn’t have to leave his home to do that.” Kelly faces 195 years in prison if convicted on the charges. Last Thursday,Êfederal indictments against Kelly in Chicago and New YorkÊwere made public. Per the Northern District of Illinois indictment, Kelly allegedly engaged in sexual acts with five victims when they were all under the age of 18; he recorded numerous explicit videos with four of them. There areÊ12 unique victims that are listed in the New York and Chicago indictments, per an assistant U.S. attorney. The indictmentsÊalso allege Kelly and his former manager Darrell McDavid paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to an acquaintance to collect the videos in order to conceal and cover up their existence. McDavid and Milton “June” Brown are also charged in the Chicago case. Home - Renters - Auto - Life - Business - Health

Nashville -7/12/2019 - A citizen’s call about teenagers smoking marijuana and blasting loud music inside a car at a Ponder Place parking lot Thursday evening resulted in the Juvenile Crime Task Force arresting four teens, recovering a stolen Hyundai Elantra and seizing two pistols. As officers arrived on Ponder Place, the driver of the stolen Elantra, a 16-year-old, attempted to flee. Officers used spike strips to disable three of the car’s tires, causing it to roll slowly to the intersection of Rosa L. Parks Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Inside the car were a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol and an unloaded revolver. The 16-year-old driver was charged with vehicle theft, evading arrest, 2nd offense juvenile handgun possession, driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of a crash, and failure to report a crash. One of the 16-year-old passengers was charged with auto theft and 1st offense juvenile handgun possession. Another 16-year-old passenger was charged with auto theft, juvenile handgun possession 2nd offense, and felony probation violation. The one adult in the Elantra, Vantasia Endsley, 18, of S. 5th Street, was booked on charges of unlawful gun possession, joy riding, evading arrest, and contributing to the delinquency of minors. She is free on $10,000 bond. At the time of her arrest yesterday, she was free on $5,000 bond stemming from a June 27th arrest for auto theft.

Madison County Democratic Party Passes Resolution Opposing Recall of School Board Members

By Bill Marable

(Jackson, Tenn.) – At their July meeting, the Madison County Democratic Party overwhelmingly passed a resolution that opposes the ongoing efforts to recall JacksonMadison County School Board members, Kevin Alexander and Doris Black. “We believe the attempted recall is a wasted and unwarranted effort,” stated Madison County Democratic Party chair, Byron Elam. “The legislation that created this ability to recall school members only applies to Madison County. It was such a bad and useless bill, that the rest of the lawmakers in Nashville wanted no parts of it.” The local Democratic Party believes that this issue transcends political partisanship. Byron Elam Rather, this is an issue of right and wrong. None of the school board members have committed any offenses that would make their recall legitimate. Recalling an elected official because you disagree with their policy decisions is ill-conceived. The resolution was adopted by the over 40-member governing body of the local party. For more information, contact Byron Elam at 973-787-7112.

“It’s Taj Mahal of Prisons” Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with Madison County Jail Administrator Captain Tom Rudder for a one-on-one interview about the upcoming additions to the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex. The 137,013 square foot addition is expected to cost about $51 million with an in-service date expected for sometime in 2021. My immediate question after hearing the cost was ‘what do taxpayers get in a $51 million prison? Well, to start, taxpayers will get 524 new beds added to the current 303 beds available at the CJC. Of those new beds, 480 will house a variety of inmates in one of ten 48-person units. There will be an additional 20 beds for medical treatment and 24 beds in a classification unit. Why so many, you ask? That’s a great question and according to Captain Rudder, after a barrage of discussions and investigative inquires and projections and the like, the powers that be concluded that an additional 524 beds would be needed to meet those speculated demands. On the day of my interview, there were a total of 452 inmates detained in the CJC which was 149 more than capacity. With so many inmates crammed behinds the walls of ‘justice’, I naturally concluded that inmate morale must be at a low ebb. However, according to Captain Rudder it was exactly the opposite. “It is surprisingly high,” said the Administrator. “You’re always going to have your skirmishes when you have so many people confined in a tight space, but overall I view it as positive.” Captain Rudder has been the Jail Administrator since 2004 and has logged some 31 years of on-the-job experience, so I guess I could take his word for that situation. Other amenities will include a new Intake and Booking area, Kitchen and Laundry. The Video Visitation area will also be enhanced, said Captain Rudder. “More video viewing stations are going to be added to the front of the building to accommodate the increase in inmate visits. People will still be able to visit face-toface, but it will incur a cost,” said Captain Rudder. Also, the County is looking into using a video visitation system which would allow loved ones to visit inmates on their cell phones or computers at home. Of course, staff and inmate safety in the new facility will be paramount and Captain Rudder said Sheriff John Mehr’s administration is currently reviewing applicants to help beef up the staffing. The two-story building will have an open concept where guards will interact inside spaces with the inmates, thus adding another level of security. Guard stations will also allow authorities to view all the inmates while inside their cells. “We tried to eliminate all the blind spots,” added the administrator. An open air recreation area will give inmates access to outside activities while still confining them inside jail walls. Now for the jaw-drop. According to Captain Rudder, each inmate will be issued an electronic tablet. On said tablet will be access to a law library, personal development classes and electronic visitations. Of course there will be an expected cost for the additional services. It is obvious that $51 million will buy you one hell of a jail. In fact, former Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork recently called it the “Taj Mahal of Prisons.” Is it any wonder why the Madison County Commission thumbed their collective noses at the School Board’s $30 million new construction proposal for three schools? NO! It could be that the County Fathers are getting a better bargain in the new jail. And if inmates are industrious, they might pick up a little education during their incarceration. Peace!!

DEMOCRATS:

“TRUMP REMARKS RACIST” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday sharply criticized President Donald Trump for implying that she and other freshman House Democrats were not natural-born American citizens, saying the President is “angry because (he) can’t conceive of an America that includes us.”

IF YOU COULD ASK . . . Madison County Sheriff John Mehr “Sheriff Mehr we have a community of young children that need our support love and respect our community would be more appealing, families would be so appreciated if you could give our children a chance to learn how to stay out of the jail you are expanding by supporting BeRealEntertainmentInc. build a building that will teach reading, confidence, and support... Kathy Moore “Are you trying to pay for it with the money off traffic stops because court is overwhelming with misdemeanor out of control?” Malik Ibn Rashid “Knowing that the state didn’t require it and a majority of residents disapproved of the project because of costs and an overcrowding problem that could have been easily avoided...do you feel building a jail is part a substantial Jackson? Is jailing for profit going to be a big source of revenue for Jackson Madison County and do you care about the image that building a jail brings when the school system is in such a condition presently? Dr. Karessa Morrow and I continue to “RING THE BELL” for Literacy! I hope everyone had a safe and Happy 4 th of July! I spent quality time with my grandchildren and took a week off from my article in the CSE News. However, this does not mean there was not a lot going on to report for this edition. Dr. Morrow and I were on a bit of a media blitz this week as we were on the air with Kimberly Kaye at Kix 96 and was interviewed by Mr. Steve Beverly at Union University for a segment on this week’s West TN This Week for WNBJ. We had educators in the discussion from JSCC at our last Roundtable and there are many positives to be introduced for the 2019-2020 school year. We have been encouraged by the conversations and now need to reach out to parents to motivate their student to get involved with reading. Leaders are readers and one must learn how to read to succeed in our fast-paced world today. JMCSS is ramping up it’s LOOP program as well as increasing participation in the LAUNCH initiative so this is an exciting time to be a student at JMCSS. It was also announced this week that the Comptroller has approved moving forward on building a high school on the campus of UofM Lambuth to increase opportunities for dual enrollment. This fall there are more opportunities for pre-K enrollment and Arise2Read has made tremendous progress in working with second grade students. If there was ever a time to plan ahead to take advantage of options and opportunities now is the time! Make no mistake, the community cares about the importance of literacy and its impact on the future of Jackson. Surround yourself with people that will encourage and support your dreams for a successful future! I have been very blessed to have the opportunity to work with some fantastic leaders as we move forward with this “Leaders Are Readers” initiative. We are in an age of lifelong learning and in order to have success you must learn how to learn. Read to Succeed! By Don Polly - Guest columnist
