HOT WEATHER GARDEN TIPS

EARLY VOTING 6 CONTINUES
We all know of the saying that hard work pays off. While this may be true sometimes we work hard and it may not pay off unless we work smart along with it. The hard part about gardening is getting it planted and keeping grass from taking over. However, in order to reap the harvest we have to endure extreme summer heat. Following a few simple tips will ensure that your vegetables survive and be ready for your table when they mature. Keeping a little mulch around plants can help keep moisture around the roots as well as controlling grass growth.Ê Plants such as tomotoes, peppers, eggplants, corn and squash thrive in hot weather as long as they have plenty water. Early morning and late afternoon is the best time of the day to water plants. More people planted gardens this year than ever before and it is important that continued care is taken in order to have plants reach maturity and make it to your table. Good luckÊwith your garden while you and the kids enjoy the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

Op- Ed. Preparing for the New Normal at JMCSS
EARLY VOTING Shanika Douglas says she just casted her ballet and she took the kid with her to show him how it’s done. #ProudVoter
With all the uncertainty clouding the upcoming fall semester, the reception at the Chamber for Dr. Marlon King and his family was an uplifting experience for all involved. They literally took our temperature as we entered the venue! The tone from the guests seemed to be upbeat and optimistic. A welcome sight for the new superintendent who has been tasked with leading JMCSS into a school year like none other before. I had occasion to speak with school board members who had high praise for their choice and looking forward to working with him to implement his roadmap initiative for a new normal. The plan is comprised of three options: 1) The traditional classroom 2) Virtual Classroom (a nine-week option) 3) Cyber School (a full year option). These have been derived from meetings with the leadership team, school board, and parent and teacher surveys. It is clear that Dr. King is looking to involve all stakeholders in decisions impacting education within the system. It was clear to this observer of the affair that Dr. King has built trust in a very short time and understands he will need the support of the community to achieve his goals and realize his vision for JMCSS. Even in the age of COVID19 optimism can be contagious to produce positive results this fall in our schools.
SINCERITY NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION Connecting and engaging with others for influence requires getting to know their wants, needs, and desires. When Dr. King and his family posed for the picture, he requested we drop the masks to convey his sincere appreciation for the outpouring of support for his leadership. I was happy to comply and be a part of the enthusiasm. Ironically, I did not notice the “X” on the floor until afterward. There is nothing like being put on the spot to see how you will respond to direction! “The man of genius inspires us with a boundless confidence in our own powers.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson If earning and building trust is not your priority, what is the impact of leading a team that doesn’t work well together? In business I always pointed out that no plan survives contact with action. That in now way means that it will not work with a little adjustment. I spoke with principals that were confident in facing upcoming challenges this fall. Together we can win this but it will require everyone doing their part. HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE SYMPTOMS OF
The Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, has created an unprecedented health and economic crisis for Tennesseans. The state’s goal is to keep the public, especially vulnerable populations, safe while doing everything possible to assist the economic recovery in Tennessee. Governor Bill Lee has been working closely with federal, state, and local officials to address this pandemic and mitigate its impact in Tennessee. This is a rapidly evolving situation that Gov. Lee is continuously monitoring. He is committed to acting in the best interest of Tennesseans to protect their health and livelihood. Together, as we each do our part to stay apart, we can exemplify what it means to be a Tennessean and protect our neighbors. www.tn.gov/governor/covid-19.html COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. Infected people have had a wide range of symptoms reported – from mild symptoms to severe illness.
Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19: Fever or chills Cough Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Fatigue Muscle or body aches Headache New loss of taste or smell Sore throat Congestion or runny nose Nausea or vomiting Diarrhea Look for emergency warning signs for COVID-19. If someone is showing any of these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately: Trouble breathing Persistent pain or pressure in the chest New confusion Inability to wake or stay awake Bluish lips or face CALL YOUR MEDICAL PROVIDER OR LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT FOR ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS THAT ARE SEVERE OR CONCERNING TO YOU.
Covid- 19, Cares Act & Incarceration Shauntel MathisChatman Coronavirus is affecting thousands of incarcerated people in prisons and jails across the United States. In fact, Tennessee has reported over 3, 195 total confirmed cases which is about 1,511 per 10,000 prisoners. Meanwhile, the demand for criminal justice reform has spread across the United States including Tennessee. We can discuss how mass incarceration is leading to mass suffering during this pandemic and how this effect the physical and mental health of those incarcerated and their families. But, now is the time to discuss criminal justice reform and how the justice system can start now by reducing the prison population of those that are eligible for home confinement and compassionate release that are granted through the courts. As Covid-19 holds the highest leading cause of death, there are other facilities around the United States that are in the process of re-starting visitation with some limitations. However, Tennessee is not one of those states. Write us and tell us how you feel about in-person visitation as Covid-19 continues to spread. If you have a loved one that is behind bars and have underlying conditions, please be sure to write to your love one addressed to the courts requesting compassionate release and include a home plan for them. The courts are not accepting letters from families and are only accepting them from your loved one or a lawyer. What Should I Do If I Feel Sick or Have Tested Positive for Covid-19? If you feel sick with flu-like symptoms, you should assume you have COVID-19 and self-isolate at home. COVID-19 is a viral illness that cannot be treated with antibiotics or antivirals, and there is no vaccine. Symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath that can last 2-4 weeks. Some people will have sore throat, body aches, and/or diarrhea. It is spread through person-to-person contact or by touching objects and surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes. IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY SYMPTOMS, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU “SELF-ISOLATE” IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: Stay home, get rest, and drink plenty of healthy fluids (like water, Gatorade). Clean your hands often, either with soap and water for 20 seconds or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. HIGH PRIORITY TIMES TO WASH HANDS INCLUDE: After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing After using the restroom Before eating or preparing food After contact with animals or pets Before and after providing routine care for another person who needs assistance, such as a child. Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants or cough medicine to manage symptoms. Call your primary care provider first if you have chronic health conditions before you take these medications. Do not go to work/school/public areas. Avoid public transportation/ride-sharing/taxis. Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home, particularly people with special vulnerability to COVID-19 infection, such as people age 65 or older, those with immune compromise and health care workers. Do not welcome visitors into your home. Use a separate bathroom, if available, and separate towels. Use separate dishes and utensils. Cover your coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow or with a tissue, throwing the tissue away immediately afterwards. People previously diagnosed with COVID-19 should wear a face mask when around other people if they are still having symptoms. People who are well should not acquire or wear facemasks. Avoid sharing personal household items such as cups, dishes, utensils, towels or bedding. Clean high-touch surfaces every day with disinfectant, such as countertops, tables, doorknobs, toilets and computer keyboards.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR TEMPERATURE AND MONITOR YOUR SYMPTOMS DAILY. SEEK PROMPT MEDICAL CARE IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GETTING WORSE. COMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19 INCLUDE PNEUMONIA, ORGAN FAILURE, AND IN SOME CASES, DEATH. SEVERE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing (feeling like you can’t get enough air, gasping, unable to speak without stopping for air, feelings of distress). Weakness, dizziness or chest pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call your doctor primary BEFORE seeking care, or call 911 if it is a medical emergency. Inform your doctor’s office or the 911 dispatcher that you are on self-isolation for possible COVID-19 and have worsening symptoms. Please put on a facemask before entering any healthcare facilities. These steps will help reduce possible transmission to other people. For additional information, view our quick overview on Please contact your doctor if you have questions.
FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN AROUND A PERSON WITH COVID-19 It is important to remember that anyone who has close contact with someone with COVID-19 should stay home for 14 days after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness.

NAIA Player Spotlight: Former HHS Standout Kortland Martin By Jeremy Wright July 21, 2020 Kortland Martin has been a pillar at the point guard position since he joined the Freed-Hardeman University Lions basketball team in 2017 as a freshman. Martin, a native of Humboldt, TN, decided to stay close to home and attend FHU just 45 minutes away in Henderson. Martin ultimately chose FHU because he felt it was the right fit for him and it was a great recruiting experience. He also would be close to home and the talent level and competition would help him grow as a player. Martin made his presence known from day one at FHU, as he took American Midwest Conference Freshman of the year honors in the 2017-2018 season, and then Third Team All-AMC honors as a sophomore in the 2018-2019 season. After his sophomore season, the FHU basketball team hired Drew Stutts, who was the assistant coach in Martin’s freshman season, as the new head coach. The prior relationship between Stutts and Martin made the transition that much smoother once Stutts took over the head coaching position. “When you have coaches that are committed to making you a better person and player, it makes going hard in pre-season workouts, practice sessions, and even harder in games well worth it, Martin said.” “I have much respect for Coach Stutts and assistant coaches Jake Mitchell and Grant Burns, it’s fun playing for them, they make playing the game fun and enjoyable.” Martin had a stellar junior campaign this past season as he surpassed 1,000 career points and broke the FHU single-game scoring record with a 44-point performance against Missouri Baptist. The Lions would post a 19-10 record as Martin was named First Team All-AMC and NAIA All-American honorable mention. Martin lists breaking the single-game scoring record at FHU as one of his favorite moments so far in his career. He also enjoys volunteering in the community with the youth and being a source of encouragement for them.
