JURY SUMMONS SCAM ALERT

HATCHIE REFUGE UPDATE

As August rolls in Hatchie Refuge is rich in late summer and early fall adventures. The lakes are just right with all the early rains and having had time to settle the water is perfect. The levels are great and the color of most lakes will make you want to give them a try. There are many oxbow lakes with all species of fish in them and because of the temperatures there has not been a lot of pressure on them. There are cypress trees around most of the lakes that provide good fishing stomps as well as shade. Good gravel roads allow you to travel from Hwy 76 on Powell Road all the way to the Hillville lakes. You will pass some 11 lakes all of which have good reputations. A venture ride down Powell Road can be a trip of a life time if you have never done it. There are possibilities of seeing deer, racoons, turkeys, eagles and other animals not normally seen. Blue birds and finches are regularly viewed as you drive through. If you want to take a slow ride in nature then the Hatchie is waiting in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. PHOTO IS SCENIC CREEK.

CrimeSEEN!

Madison County Sheriff John Mehr, is alerting citizens of a fresh barrage of scam calls concerning Jury summons. This time, the caller threatens, that because you missed a Jury duty assignment, you will need to pay or you will be arrested and jailed. The Sheriff reminds everyone, it is best just to hang up. Do not send any money or gift cards and certainly do not share any personal information such as bank account and social security numbers. Just be alert, and protect yourself from these criminals, who are out to steal your money and joy.

Baskerville Funeral Home Directors of Distinction

802 N. 9th Ave. * Humboldt, TN www.baskervillefuneralhome.com MR. EARL M. SHAW, JR.

Dec 23, 1959 - Aug 6, 2021 Services for Mr. Earl M. Shaw, Jr. age 61 will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, 12 Noon at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. The interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. On December 23, 1959, the late Earl and Daisy Trotter Shaw became the proud parents of their fourth child and only son, Earl Mack Shaw, Jr. He was clearly the best Christmas gift ever given to the Shaw family and loved dearly. Earl Jr. as he was affectionately known throughout the community was a happy child, always following behind his sisters, Essie, Earline, and Stella, who doted on him lovingly. Earl Jr. was always helpful to the neighbors and senior citizens within the community. He professed his life in Christ at early age and was baptized at the Middleton & Payne Street Church of Christ. His greatest pleasure was working alongside his father and mother in the family business, Stephenson-Shaw Funeral Home, Inc. Earl Jr. started in the business as a young boy – dusting, cleaning bathrooms, washing cars and worked his way up to answering the telephone. With his father and mother, and Lewis T. Brantley as his role models and mentors, Earl Jr. learned the importance of personal customer service for families in their time of need. “THE VERY BEST IN SO MANY WAYS” was not just a motto, but an active way of life. Earl Jr. attended Jackson-Central Merry High School, graduating in 1978 and also in 1978 he became a Licensed Funeral Director. He continued his education at Morehouse College, earning a degree in Business Administration in 1982. Upon the death of his father in 1987, Earl Jr. officially assumed the position as President and Chief Financial Officer of Stephenson-Shaw Funeral Home, Inc. In 1987, Earl Jr. married the woman of his dreams, Beverly Ann Wade. Together they successfully continued to provide the same quality service in keeping with our established motto, “THE VERY BEST IN SO MANY WAYS” while serving the community and throughout West Tennessee. Earl Jr. and Beverly continued to carry the tradition of his legacy of Stephenson-Shaw Funeral Home, Inc. For more information contact us at 1-877-FORSHAW. https://www.stephenson-shaw.com

“THE GODFATHER OF GOP” RECOGNIZED BY GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Most of us in West Tennessee know Mr Jimmy Wallace and the rich heritage the “Wallace Family” name brings to this area. Jimmy Wallace was recently recognized by the State of Tennessee General Assembly with a “Joint House and Senate resolution” of his life time service to the people of Tennessee. Wallace was first elected to the State House of Representatives and later appointed to the State Election Commission. Wallace has helped organize and manage political campaigns and successfully elected many candidates with the Republican Party. Here State Senator Ed Jackson and State Representative Chris Todd present Jimmy Wallace with a joint resolution also signed by the Governor and Secretary of State. Wallace while attending the annual “Reagan Day Dinner” said he was humbled by this recognition and expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the State Senate and House as well. “It has been an honor and privilege serving the people of Tennessee for whom I’ll always be grateful.”

HOSPITAL PREPARES FOR CRITICAL VOLUME OF PATIENTS

Jackson, Tennessee (August 4, 2020) – West Tennessee Healthcare leadership announced today that Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is taking additional steps to address the rising number of patients visiting the emergency department. Mobile hospital units, usually reserved for disasters, were erected in the parking lot at the hospital earlier today to provide additional space for the treatment of emergency department patients. Volumes in emergency departments throughout the system were 10% higher in the month of July than expected, while inpatient volumes continue to remain at an unseasonably high rate. Coupled with the rising COVID-19 patient volumes, the hospital took swift action to alleviate the overcrowding in the emergency department. With the assistance of the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, the Madison County Fire Department, the West Tennessee Regional Health Department, and the WATCH7 Healthcare Coalition, units were erected and beds were placed in them for treatment of patients as needed, for as long as needed. According to Dr. Mike Revelle, Chief of Emergency Services for West Tennessee Healthcare, the tents will be utilized to provide space to treat patients who are not as critical to reserve space in the main department where they take care of the “sickest” patients. Dr. Jackie Taylor, Chief Physician Executive, remarked, “As a member of this community and a provider who has practiced here over 30 years, I am very concerned about the rising volumes, but I am hopeful that we can come together as a community to fight this virus and continue to take care of each other.” West Tennessee Healthcare leaders are urging eligible individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. About West Tennessee Healthcare: West Tennessee Healthcare is a public, not-for-profit healthcare system with locations serving 19 counties in West Tennessee and Southeast Missouri. The mission of West Tennessee Healthcare is to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve while providing exceptional and compassionate care. And Your Point is . . .

IT’S A CRIME TO BE UNHEALTHY!

#8 of 10 Articles by Well Connected Communities Coalition UT-TSU Extension Madison County

By Susan Holloway, Program Assistant WCC Last month my article addressed the basis of Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025. You might recall it is 165 pages in length. And rewritten every five years. This is ninth edition meaning the government has researched, analyzed, debated how we should eat for over 50 years. Many agencies that are Agriculture, Health, Human Services, Engineering, Science, Medical, etc. designated hundreds of employees, and millions of dollars to develop these recommendations. We revealed their findings and explained many illnesses and early deaths are caused by our poor selection of foods and beverages. They declare-- Foods and beverages that people consume have a profound impact on their health. This month, we address how to fill plates and glasses with the healthiest that will have a positive rather than negative impact on our health. A healthy eating routine is important at every stage of life and can have positive effects that add up over time. It is important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy or fortified soy alternatives, and protein foods. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients. That means avoiding high sugar, high fat, and high salt foods. Make every bite count. Your body will appreciate it. Try the MyPlate.gov and you will find some of the following guides to good food choices: Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables – cooked, raw, canned, or fresh. Fruits are blueberries watermelon, pineapples, apples, strawberries, kiwifruit, bananas, oranges, mangoes, etc. Try new fruits, especially when they are in season. Vegetables are leafy greens, spinach, broccoli, kale, sweet potatoes, peas, asparagus, cabbage, mushrooms, carrots, etc. Eat different colored vegetables. Grains add fiber to your diet and whole grains are especially good. Grains are such foods as corn, crackers, rice, couscous (from Africa), quinoa (from South America), pasta, etc. Protein sources include tofu (made from soybeans), legumes (beans, peas, lentils), fish, eggs, chicken, red meat, shellfish, nuts, etc. Consume at least 3 cups of low-fat or nonfat milk or milk products each day. Choose items with lots of water content. Since your body weight should be 50% to 70% water, let your choice of foods help maintain that healthy percentage. Use a small plate for the proper serving size (usually half of the combo meals served at fast food restaurants!) LET’S EAT FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!

TEXAS REP. SHEILA JACKSON LEE IS LATEST LAWMAKER ARRESTED IN VOTING RIGHTS FIGHT

NNPA NEWSWIRE — The Brennan Center directly tied the new laws to “racist voter fraud allegations behind the Big Lie – former President Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud – and a desire to prevent future elections from achieving the historic turnout seen in 2020.” August 7, 2021- By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

“Any action that is a peaceful action of civil disobedience is worthy and more to push all of us to do better and to do more and to pass (H.R.) 1, S 1 and to pass the John Robert Lewis Voting Rights Act,” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) stated. (Photo: Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee questions U.S. Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan during testimony in the House Committee on Homeland Security in a hearing focused on closing pathways for terrorists enter the U.S. in Washington, D.C., September 14, 2016. CBP Photo by Glenn Fawcett / Wikimedia Commons)

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) became the third African American lawmaker arrested this month while advocating for new voting rights legislation. On Friday, July 30, the congresswoman’s arrest follows the detainment of fellow Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) and Congressman Hank Johnson (D-Georgia). Each of them protested Jim Crow-like voter restriction laws in GOP-led states around the country. “I will never stop fighting for voting rights,” Congresswoman Jackson-Lee exclaimed. “The time is now to move the voting rights bills in the U.S. Senate forward!! Enough is enough.” Civil Rights legend the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Poor People’s Campaign co-chair the Rev. William Barber II also were arrested in Washington. Like Congressman Johnson, Jackson and Barber demonstrated outside of the U.S. Capitol demanding that the U.S. Senate abolish the filibuster to push through voting rights measures. “We come not as an insurrection group, but as a resurrection group,” Jackson demanded during the June 23 demonstration that led to his arrest. “We must fill up the jails … if you call yourself a child of God, you oughta act like it sometimes.” Barber took direct aim at West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who has stubbornly refused to consider abolishing or altering the filibuster for the sake of voting rights. “We are also here to say to Manchin: Any so-called Democrat who claims to support the non-constitutional filibuster over the constitutional guarantee that no state can deny or abridge the right to vote … you are assisting the Republicans in their extremism,” Barber asserted. Voter suppression laws have passed statehouses in Georgia, Texas, Arizona, and 14 other states have Democrats and others concerned. Since the 2020 election, 17 states have passed 28 laws making it harder for constituents to vote in 2021, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University’s School of Law. The Brennan Center directly tied the new laws to “racist voter fraud allegations behind the Big Lie – former President Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud – and a desire to prevent future elections from achieving the historic turnout seen in 2020.” Congresswoman Beatty summoned the memory of the late Congressman John Lewis after her arrest. “Good trouble,” Beatty tweeted. She demanded that her Republican colleagues “protect our voting rights” and pass the For the People Act.” 80-12-21 CSENEWS P.9

DREAMS

BY NIKKI GIOVANNI

in my younger years before i learned black people aren’t suppose to dream i wanted to be a raelet and say “dr o wn d in my youn tears” or “tal kin bout tal kin bout” or marjorie hendricks and grind all up against the mic and scream “baaaaaby nightandday baaaaaby nightandday” then as i grew and matured i became more sensible and decided i would settle down and just become a sweet inspiration Poet Nikki Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 7, 1943. Although she grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, she and her sister returned to Knoxville each summer to visit their grandparents. Nikki graduated with honors in history from her grandfather’s alma mater, Fisk University. Since 1987, she has been on the faculty at Virginia Tech, where she is a University Distinguished Professor. ADULT, 2 JUVENILES ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTING AT EAST JACKSON APARTMENTS

‘This murder will not be in vain’: Attorney Ben Crump joins Alvin Motley’s family after deadly shooting in Memphis

August 10, 2021 Maranda Faris - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police have confirmed three people are in custody following a shooting Monday night at an east Jackson apartment complex. Police say two juveniles and an adult are in custody. Officers responded to a report of shots fired at East Pointe Apartments on Daugherty Street around 6:50 p.m. Monday. Police say two people were injured in the shooting. Police say their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Officers also found damage to vehicles and buildings.

by: Eryn Taylor, Joneé Lewis - Posted: Aug 10, 2021 wreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of Alvin Motley and National Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump held a news conference Tuesday to address the shooting that claimed his life at a Kroger Fuel Center in East Memphis over the weekend. “Yet again, another Black unarmed person was killed because he was profiled,” Crump said. “Because of the color of his skin. How many more times will we have to face these tragedies?”

Man shot and killed at Kroger Fuel Center in East Memphis over loud music; guard charged with second degree murder

According to the family, Motley was in Memphis to visit family and for business when the driver he was with stopped to get gas. That’s when they say Gregory Livingston, 54, approached the vehicle and asked them to turn down their music because it was too loud. There was an argument and Motley got out of the vehicle. He asked if they could talk about the situation like men and that’s when Livingston allegedly opened fire, the family said. “I don’t care how loud you think it is, you do not have a right to kill a young black man for playing music.” Crump said during a press conference Tuesday. After the shooting, a cousin was called to the gas station to identify Motley’s body. Livingston, 54, was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the Shelby County Jail on $1.8 million bond. Security guard Gregory Livingston (left) is charged with murder in the shooting death of Alvin Motley. (photos: Shelby County Jail, submitted) Family members said Motley lived in Chicago but had family connections to Memphis. They also said he was the passenger in the vehicle because he was legally blind.

“My God says to forgive,” said Alvin Motley Sr., the victim’s father. “I forgive the man, but I want him punished to the full extent.”

A Kroger spokesperson said Livingston was an employee of Allied Universal Security when he was working as a guard Saturday. State records show Livingston recently submitted an application to be an armed security guard. According to that application he completed a training course just two weeks before Saturday’s shooting. Livingston was also a former officer employed with the City of Horn Lake from August 1998 until he resigned April 2001, a commander at the Horn Lake Police Department said.
