Atty. Richard Donnell Receives Community Serive Award
Donnell is also the host of two Jackson, Tennessee radio talk show programs on WFKX-FM and WL CD-LP.“Iam humbled and honored to receive this community service award from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. To be recognized by such an august body is indeed an honor and I thank its mem bers for this recognition,” saidCommunityDonnell. service recognition programs for higher education students and faculty/staff at the cam pus level were created in Tennessee through legisla tion enacted by the General Assembly in 1991. In 1997, the awards were named for the late Representative Harold Love, who was instrumental in passing the enabling legislation. The Tennessee Higher Educa tion Commission was given the charge to develop rules and regulations by which to implement these programs for public and private two and four-year institutions. A taskforce of institutional and board representatives is convened each year to re view each proposal submit ted by the campuses and to select the five student and five faculty/staff recipients.
JACKSON, TN (August 19, 2022) – Atty. Richard Donnell, Sr. Advisor to the President at Lane College, has been awarded the Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. He is one of five faculty/ staff recipients across Tennessee’s higher educa tion institutions to earn the service award. As senior advisor, Donnell advocates for the college on federal, state, and local governmental affairs; assists the President in developing and promot ing strategies to influence public policy priorities of Lane College at those governmental levels; and creates external communi cations to vital constituents and stakeholders of the college on a full range of strategic matters. He also serves as the project coordinator of Lane’s Second Chance Pell program, which offers degree-leading college credit courses to incarcerated persons at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tip tonville, Tennessee. The goal of the project is to reduce recidivism and build a prison-to-college pipeline.
HBCUs are building a new prison-to-college pipeline www.npr.org/2022/08/17StanleyAndrissesayshis 21-year-old self, who was once facing 20 years to life in prison, could never have imagined his life today: Andrisse is now an endocri nologist, scientist and professor at Howard University’s College of Medicine. He has a Ph.D., an MBA, and a lab full of students who affectionately call him Dr. Stan. When he was 21, Stanley Andrisse hit rock bottom.
The city of Jackson should be ashamed at how it treats it african American employees. The lady at city court who was wrongly arrested by DA Jody Pickens has not heard anything from the city regarding her case. This racist DA refused to indict a white former mayor who misappropriated millions and refused to indict anyone associated with the hundreds of thousands misappropriated by the Jackson police department, but arrested a black lady even after he interviewed the victim who said he never gave her any money. I know that this same DA struck a deal with the current mayor to not prosecute his wife and this may be the reason the mayor refuses to reinstate this lady. This is the kind of behavior that shows blacks in this community that they have no respect for us! If they can treat an innocent black person in this manner and the leaders in this community remain afraid to speak up, I only wonder who or what’s next.- Daryl Hubbard
“So I didn’t quite live up to the expectations of the prosecutor those many, many years ago,” he says with a laugh. Andrisse credits his success to a mentor he had while he was incarcerated. They encouraged him to continue his education and helped him apply to higher educa tion programs while he was still behind bars.
His story is remarkable, but historically Black colleges and universities are try ing to make it more common. Around the country, HBCUs are investing in edu cation for incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people, with the goal of reducing recidivism and building a prison-to-college pipeline. Cont’d from page 14
“I was sitting in a courtroom facing 20 years to life and had this prosecutor telling me that I had no hope for changing,” Andrisse says. He was convicted on three felony counts and spent the next few years in a Missouri prison. He says his 21-year-old self could never have imagined his life today: Andrisse is now an endocrinologist, scientist and professor at Howard University’s College of Medicine. He has a Ph.D., an MBA, and a lab full of students who affectionate ly call him Dr. Stan.

She recalls the first day of Lane College classes at Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville. The lecture was supposed to be online, but the president of Lane College came to speak to the students in person. He talked about the history of the school and the legacy of HBCUs as a tool for Black liberation. “The students were abso lutely mesmerized,” Mimms says.
“They have truly embraced the program and they are probably some of the best recruiters for the program,” says Vanessa Harris, director of Claflin’s prison-to-college initiative. The program’s enrollment numbers keep climbing. “We started last summer with 10 students, I am projecting we will probably be well over 140 students by the fall semester,” she says.
“When we introduce post-secondary educational options while the individual is incarcerated, we reduce the risk of recidivism by nearly half,” she says.

“You don’t have a lot of formerly incarcerated people pursuing medicine,” she says. But if she can do it, she knows it’ll make a difference. The same way Andrisse has made a differ ence for her. She says, “I’m opening doors for people following me, you know? So why not? Because if I don’t do it, then how do I expect others to follow that pathway?”
Since 2011, her organization has worked with Tennessee community colleges to provide degree programs behind bars.
“My personal experience with higher education pretty much stopped at the door when I was incarcerated at the facility,” says Rabia Qutab, who transitioned out of incarceration about a year ago.

“Our brothers and sisters behind the wall are coming home.” says Laura Ferguson Mimms, executive director of the Tennessee Higher Education In Prison Initiative (THEI). “And over the course of three years, 47% will return to incarceration if we continue to do exactly what we’ve done.”
In 2021, THEI launched its first four-year degree program with Lane College, an HBCU in Jackson, Tenn. Like many of the oldest HBCUs, Lane was founded to help educate formerly enslaved people. Mimms says the school’s history makes it well-positioned to help incarcerated students.
“I was like, ‘I know, I want to go back to school, but how do we do this?’ Right? Like, I want to pursue medi cine, but then I have to worry about my record.”
Getting help from someone who has been in your shoes Even though the interest is there, college programs in prison are hard to come by.
She started looking around, and found a program at Howard University that allows formerly incarcerat ed students to gain research experience in a top medical school lab, along with mentorship.
“Lane College is proud to be one of only 141 insti tutions of higher learning in the United States that are providing a college education to our brothers and sisters behind the wall. Of particular pride is our being the only HBCU in Tennessee offering this needed curriculum to incarcerated persons. Lane believes that a person’s quest for knowledge doesn’t only extend to persons in the free world. Although the bodies of our incarcerated students are temporarily on lockdown, their minds continue to expand. What better way to develop that mind-expansion than through education?”
Claflin University, an HBCU in Orangeburg, S.C., has seen similar enthusiasm from students.

HBCUs are building a new prison-to-college pipeline Cont’d from page 9
Some of Dr. Stan’s students were also formally incarcerated like Rabia Qutab, seen above, who transitioned out of incarceration about a year ago.
Before serving about five years at a women’s prison in Texas, Rabia Qutab had finished a pre-med degree and was getting ready to apply to medical school. She says transitioning back to life on the outside wasn’t easy.

The program’s founder and director is Stanley Andrisse. For Qutab, the program offered a way to build her resume before applying to schools, and get guidance directly from Andrisse, someone who has been in her shoes.

Dead Weight chronicles the improbable turn around of a drug smuggler who, after being sentenced to eight years in state prison, returned to society to earn a PhD in creative writing and become the only tenured professor in the United States with seven felony convictions. Horton’s visceral essays highlight the difficulties of try ing to change one’s life for the better, how the weight of felony convictions never dissipates.
Horton shares historical context and vivid details about people caught in the war on drugs who became unsuspecting protagonists in somebody else’s Lyricalmelodrama.andgripping, Dead Weight reveals the lifelong effects of one man’s incarceration on his psyche, his memories, and his daily experience of American society.
The memoir begins with a conversation between Horton and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man statue in New York City. Their imagined dialogue examines the psychological impact of racism on Black men and boys, including Horton’s separation from his mother, immediately after his birth, in a segre gated Alabama hospital. From his current life as a professor and prison reformer, Horton looks back on his experiences as a drug smuggler and traf ficker during the 1980s–1990s as well as the many obstacles he faced after his release. He also examines the lasting impact of his drug activity on those around him, reflecting on the allure of economic freedom and the mental escapism that cocaine provided, an allure so strong that both sellers and users were willing to risk prison.

Asia has been working on her non-profit corporation called CCT Youth Tribe. This corporation is very near and dear to her heart. She named it after her three children, Carlasia, Camya, and Tristan. Asia wants to give kids in the community the chance to do things without having to worry about the cost. The events that CCT Youth Tribe hosts help parents who may not be able to afford activities for their kids a chance to participate with no worries. CCT Youth Tribe plans to make all of its events affordable and fun.
Brown is associated with stability and dependability in the U.S. (think U.P.S. company) while in some Latin coun tries it’s one of the colors associated with freshness. Pink was a color virtually unused in China prior to the influx of western influences. The Chinese word used for pink literal ly means “foreign color”. Take note of this when you see a company change its logo or it’s colors. How does it line up with the message they are trying to convey, or the people they are trying to reach. Notice how a fast food chain might employ differ ent colors in a different country and notice how products shipped here from across the world might have packaging or colors that might seem “just a little off” by our expecta tions. Also take note of how public figures present themselves in their own style of “branding”. In political debates for example, one will no longer see a brown or light grey suit. The color of the neck tie will tip you off to how they are going to approach things. A red tie means they will usually be on the attack while a blue tie usually means that they want to display stability and trust.
Another example is the colors that we in the West associ ate with freshness and cleanliness. For us those colors are white, green and blue, but that’s not necessarily so for the rest of the world. Red is associated with purity in India. Red is a popular color for wedding gowns there. Red means caution and danger in the Middle East and in China it symbolizes luck, happiness and the new year. In many former Soviet Bloc nations it is associated with communism and oppression. The color black represents elegance, wealth and power in the United States and is also our color for mourning. In Latin America it is considered a manly color and in some other countries the color that represents mourning may be white (Asia) or brown (India). Yellow represents cowardice and envy in Germany but at the same time it is reserved for the higher status of society in some African countries.

KeShaun Lamont you did an AMAZING JOB in leading and Im sooo proud of you!”
At these high levels of dollars and importance both in merchandise and personality, nothing is done by accident. Big money and much time is spent on study and research to get it right. Also look at your own life. What colors do you surround yourself with and why? If your personal color preferences have changed over the years then what does that say about the way you have changed? Plenty to think about but none of it really too important. That’s a relief. E.Rogers stories at writer worker.com and Amazon books

I’ll bet you thought this article was going to be about race, but it’s not. Instead, it’s about marketing goods and services worldwide and about how different cultures view colors.Inthe U.S. we tend to be a very vocal culture. The spoken word influences everything we do but we are also influenced by visual suggestion and often we don’t realize it. Advertising has just that kind of subliminal effect on our sensibilities. You won’t see a lot of fire engine red Prius automobiles or at least not as many as you will of Corvettes because the manufacturer is trying to convey a different message to a different group of buyers.
