Additional Pre-K Students Attending JMCSS
OPINION:
Donald Trump is Playing with Fire Some political choices are not just stupid or crude. They represent the return of our country’s cruelest, most dangerous passion. Such racism indicts Trump. Treating racism as a typical or minor matter indicts us.” — Michael Gerson -WashingtonPost.com

JACKSON, TN - Jackson-Madison County School System is excited to serve 100 additional Pre-K students this school year. This increase is a direct result of the additional funds budgeted by the school board and county commission, along with the school system being a recipient of more state funding through the annual competitive state grant. “These additional PreK seats are a wonderful addition to our existing Pre-K program. We are now able to serve approximately 660 Pre-K students at 10 sites.” stated Mary Myers, Leader of Early Foundations. JMCSS added 2 additional classes at Lincoln and 1 new class at Andrew Jackson to serve the centrally located students. “We are very excited about having our very first Pre-K class at Andrew Jackson. Our Pre-K students will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and also be exposed to our school culture and environment. This Pre-K class will allow us to build a solid foundation so that they will be ready and able to transition to Kindergarten more effectively,” said Ramonica Dorsey, Principal at Andrew Jackson. Lincoln’s principal, LaDonna Braswell stated, “It has been such a blessing to be able to serve more Pre-K scholars this school year. We truly believe this experience will help increase literacy across the board in JMCSS.” Denmark Elementary and South Elementary also received new classes to better serve the south Jackson community. Kimberly Quinn, principal at Denmark Elementary shared, “Before the addition of the new Pre-K class at our school, some parents may not have been able to commute to other Pre-K sites which caused their children to miss out on early learning opportunities. An additional classroom in a community school, such as Denmark, has allowed more students to have access to the Pre-K Big Day curriculum and highly effective teachers, who are preparing them for the rigorous kindergarten curriculum as well as the grades ahead.” Mr. Nelson, South Elementary principal said, “We want to welcome all of our new Pre-K students and families to South Elementary. We are excited to have the opportunity to help these students learn and grow as we help set the foundation for their education.” JMCSS currently has 38 total Pre-K classes serving students throughout the district.

214 arrested in ‘Operation Bluff City Blues’ BY WBBJ STAFF
BRITTANY KYLES JACKSON, Tenn.–“These 214 people who are now in custody represent the worst of the worst,” said U.S. Attorney of the Western District of Tennessee, Michael Dunavant. Over a two week combined law enforcement operation, federal agents arrested many people on criminal charges. Thirty-six of the 214 are arrested in Jackson. Among the charges are homicide, aggravated assault and drug distribution. Dunavant said ‘Operation Bluff City Blues’ also rounded up drugs and weapons. “Local and state partners also seized a total of 28 firearms, approximately 771.9 grams of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and crack, $17,240 in U.S. currency, as well as the recovery of four stolen vehicles,” said Dunavant. The U.S Marshal Service Deputy Commander Mike Quarles said ‘Operation Bluff City Blues’ is one of more than 100 operations nationwide launched to catch violent fugitives. “It’s the template that the U.S Marshal Service uses known as ‘Operation Washout,’” Quarles said. “214 violent felony warrants were served, 214 bad guys, worst of the worst were taken into custody, with no incident, no shots fired, no injuries occurred,” Dunavant said. Dunavant said he wants these arrests to show West Tennesseans their safety and security are top priorities. He also has a warning for fugitives. “If you’re a drug dealer, you’re a gang banger, you’re a trigger puller, you’re a violent criminal on our street, you can’t hide,” Dunavant said. Thirteen different agencies participated in ‘Operation Bluff City Blues’ including the Jackson Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Dunavant said there will be future arrests as federal agents continue to dismantle criminal organizations in West Tennessee.

WILLIAMSON
The 28th DTF along with Jackson -Metro Narcotics, the U.S. Marshal Service and Milan Police Department went to 4033 North 1st Street in Milan to arrest a subject wanted on two counts of attempted murder out of Bolivar, TN. During the arrest, Agents developed probable cause to apply for a search warrant to search the residence for narcotics. Agents seized almost a pound (15 ounces) of methamphetamine-ice, almost an ounce of heroin(24.0 grams), over a half ounce (16.0 grams) of cocaine, 32 zanax pills, 4.0 grams of fentanyl, 2.0 grams of crack cocaine, a loaded .38 caliber revolver, electronic scales and proceeds of the sale of narcotics. Two persons are in the custody of Sheriff Paul Thomas at the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office being held on the warrants as well as multiple drug and weapons charges in lieu of a $1,000,000.00 bond. All persons are innocent until proven guilty. The estimated street value of these drugs is approximately $35,000.00. NOTE: to give you an idea of how much heroin/ fentanyl was seized we will say that on average, a user uses .1 grams per use. That means there’s 280 uses seized. Each of those 280 doses have a high potential of killing the user. That’s 280 people still alive because we seized it.

Jackson Women’s Group Establishes Donald Trump is playing with Fire Sue Shelton White Scholarship OPINION:
This is a quote from Michael Gerson, a former speechwriter for Bush gives a message for people who are excusing President Trump’s racism: “I had fully intended to ignore President Trump’s latest round of racially charged taunts against an African American elected official, and an African American activist, and an African American journalist and a whole city with a lot of African Americans in it. I had every intention of walking past Trump’s latest outrages and writing about the self-destructive squabbling of the Democratic presidential field, which has chosen to shame former vice president Joe Biden for the sin of being an electable, moderate liberal. But I made the mistake of pulling James Cone’s ‘The Cross and the Lynching Tree’ off my shelf — a book designed to shatter convenient complacency. Cone recounts the case of a white mob in Valdosta, Ga., in 1918 that lynched an innocent man named Haynes Turner. Turner’s enraged wife, Mary, promised justice for the killers. The sheriff responded by arresting her and then turning her over to the mob, which included women and children. According to one source, Mary was ‘stripped, hung upside down by the ankles, soaked with gasoline, and roasted to death. In the midst of this torment, a white man opened her swollen belly with a hunting knife and her infant fell to the ground and was stomped to death.’ God help us. It is hard to write the words. This evil — the evil of white supremacy, resulting in dehumanization, inhumanity and murder — is the worst stain, the greatest crime, of U.S. history. It is the thing that nearly broke the nation. It is the thing that proved generations of Christians to be vicious hypocrites. It is the thing that turned normal people into moral monsters, capable of burning a grieving widow to death and killing her child. When the president of the United States plays with that fire or takes that beast out for a walk, it is not just another political event, not just a normal day in campaign 2020. It is a cause for shame. It is the violation of martyrs’ graves. It is obscene graffiti on the Lincoln Memorial. It is, in the eyes of history, the betrayal — the re-betrayal — of Haynes and Mary Turner and their child. And all of this is being done by an ignorant and arrogant narcissist reviving racist tropes for political gain, indifferent to the wreckage he is leaving, the wounds he is ripping open. Like, I suspect, many others, I am finding it hard to look at resurgent racism as just one in a series of presidential offenses or another in a series of Republican errors. Racism is not just another wrong. The Antietam battlefield is not just another plot of ground. The Edmund Pettus Bridge is not just another bridge. The balcony outside Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel is not just another balcony. As U.S. history hallows some causes, it magnifies some crimes. What does all this mean politically? It means that Trump’s divisiveness is getting worse, not better. He makes racist comments, appeals to racist sentiments and inflames racist passions. The rationalization that he is not, deep down in his heart, really a racist is meaningless. Trump’s continued offenses mean that a large portion of his political base is energized by racist tropes and the language of white grievance. And it means — whatever their intent — that those who play down, or excuse, or try to walk past these offenses are enablers. Some political choices are not just stupid or crude. They represent the return of our country’s cruelest, most dangerous passion. Such racism indicts Trump. Treating racism as a typical or minor matter indicts us.” — Michael Gerson -- WashingtonPost.com

Marks Women’s Equality Day to honor leader of Tennessee women’s suffrage movement Jackson, TN- Madison Area Democratic Women (MADW) today announced the establishment of a $2,500 scholarship in honor of Sue Shelton White, the West Tennessee suffragist who played a pivotal role in gaining the right to vote for women. The announcement coincides with the 99 th anniversary of the adoption of the 19 th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. “Today, we pay tribute to Sue Shelton White by establishing a significant annual scholarship which will, each year, benefit one or more hard working young Brand New women from West Tennessee.” said Debbie Mattress Sets Swacker, Chair of MADW’s Scholarship Committee. Ms. Swacker added, “We believe empowering women strengthens the entire community.” The 100 th anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, granting all women the right to vote, will occur in August 2020. Tennessee was the final battleground state in the fight for ratification as the movement needed just one more state to ratify the Amendment in order for it to become part of the U.S. Constitution. As chairman of the National Women’s Party for Tennessee, Sue White played a vital role in that victory by using her sharp wit, political savvy and West Tennessee charm to lobby legislators in Nashville. Tennessee ratified the 19 th Amendment by a dramatic single vote on August 18, 1920. Sue White went on to earn her law degree while working full time for a Tennessee U.S. senator. MADW’s Sue Shelton White Scholarship is open to nontraditional women students residing in Madison County and neighboring West Tennessee counties. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is returning to finish her education after a break from high school or receiving her GED. The scholarship is designed to assist young women in finishing their education despite the demands of work and family. MADW will be raising money for the scholarship among its members and with a rummage sale on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at TAKE HOME OR the Lions Club on North Highland. Other DELIVERED! fundraising activities are underway. Donations to the Sue Shelton White Scholarship Fund may NO CREDIT NEEDED! be made at www.madwomentn.org. Submissions for the $2,500 scholarship will be accepted through February 15, 2020 and the scholarship winner will be announced by March 15, 2020. Scholarship applications are available at www.madwomentn.org and completed applications may be emailed to scholarship@madwomentn.org. Madison Area Democratic Women (MADW) was formed in November 2017 to encourage and promote progressive ideals in Madison and surrounding Counties and support women and DON’T MISS OUT! families. MADW meets on the first Tuesday of CALL OR TEXT TODAY! each month. New members are welcome.
