And Your Point is . . .
OP-ED:
Improving Maternal Health Care in America
NNPA NEWSWIRE — As a Republican and as a Democrat we have made a conscious decision to work closely together on this issue in our respective home states of Louisiana and North Carolina. Yet, we also know that disparities in maternal health and mortality are national problems that warrant effective and timely congressional, statewide, and local responses and remedies.
Jayland Walker suffered 46 gun shot wounds.
WE NEED JUSTICE FOR JAYLAND WALKER Content warning: police terrorism/brutality
Akron, Ohio, is still grieving the loss of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man murdered by police.
HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW:
On June 27, police stopped Jayland Walker for an alleged “traffic and equipment violation.” Within minutes, eight Akron Police Department officers shot at Jayland more than 90 times, and he suffered 46 gunshot wounds. Then the same officers who killed Jayland handcuffed his lifeless body.1 The bodycam footage shows eight cops killing a Black man while five more police officers stood by and watched. The eight police officers who shot Jayland are still on paid administrative leave.2 This is unacceptable, and we won’t stop fighting until what happened to Jayland Walker in Akron never happens again, anywhere. West, add your name to tell Akron elected officials: Take action NOW to end police violence and protect Black lives. Our hearts break for Jayland’s family and the Akron community. Jayland was a young man with a family and a bright future. He was a human who deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. Instead, Akron police murdered him.
That’s why we’re standing with The Freedom BLOC3 to demand Akron’s elected officials:
*Protect protesters: Immediately end the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets against protesters. *Create and fund an unarmed traffic enforcement unit for routine traffic stops. *Invest in community-led public safety solutions. Invest in what keeps Black communities safe, including reparations, housing, public transportation, food security, health care and community-controlled public safety alternatives.
DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY IN AKRON NOW
This moment also requires us to recognize a painful truth: The police murder of Jayland Walker is not an anomaly. We’ve been
here before. In South Carolina, police stopped Walter Scott for a non-functioning brake light.4 In Michigan, police stopped Patrick Lyoya for improper vehicle registration.5 Just outside Minneapolis, where police murdered George Floyd, a Brooklyn Center police officer pulled Daunte Wright over for minor traffic violations and an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror.6 Police murdered all of these Black men during routine traffic stops. In a country where armed, militarized police are the response to every alleged infraction, incident and crisis — and Black people are viewed as threats, not human beings — Black people aren’t issued tickets or citations. We receive death sentences. Now, as Jayland’s family and neighbors take to the street to demand justice, the Akron Police Department has initiated a terror campaign against protesters. Police terrorism continues to target Black and Indigenous communities. And when people stand up to protest police brutality, police spray them with teargas and beat them with batons. This is who the police are, and dehumanizing and terrorizing Black people is what they do. The murder of Jayland Walker and the violent police response in Akron are just the latest cruel examples of what happens when elected officials prioritize policing over investments that actually keep communities safe. It shouldn’t be this way — and, it doesn’t have to be. We can demand better from elected officials, and hold them accountable for the needs of our communities. Add your name now to demand action and accountability in Akron:
DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY IN AKRON NOW We know the road to real accountability is long, so we’ll keep you updated as this case develops. Thank you, as always, for standing with us to demand and build a safer, more equitable world for Black people — in Jackson and across the country. Until justice is real, Color Of Change’s Criminal Justice & Democracy Team
Published - July 20, 2022By BlackPressUSA We call on all Americans to be united to address maternal mortality. Let’s eliminate racial disparity in all health outcomes but especially among those about to give birth or who have just given birth. BY SEN. WILLIAM “BILL” CASSIDY (R-LA.) AND BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS, JR, | The Hill The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Black women experience maternal mortality two to three times higher than that of white women. The estimated national maternal mortality rate in the United States is about 17 per 100,000 live births –– but it is about 43 per100,000 live births for Black women. We both are advocates and supporters of proposals that address public health disparities in America, particularly with respect to inequities concerning the maternal mortality rates of Black women. As we bring awareness this week to Black Maternal Mental Health Week, we shine a light on an issue that should transcend partisan divisions and the racial divide that unfortunately persists across the nation. As a Republican and as a Democrat we have made a conscious decision to work closely together on this issue in our respective home states of Louisiana and North Carolina. Yet, we also know that disparities in maternal health and mortality are national problems that warrant effective and timely congressional, statewide, and local responses and remedies. The two of us have been actively involved in addressing various social inequities for decades from the formidable days of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to today, in our communities and in our nation’s capital. In addition, our two families have had a positive history in the medical, health care, and environmental fields. But what really served as a catalyst that enabled us to initiate a public bipartisan unity and resolve to work together going forward Cont’d page 12

YEARLONG DRUG INVESTIGATION IN HARDIN COUNTY NETS 19 INDICTMENTS
HARDIN COUNTY – A yearlong drug investigation by special agents with the Drug Investigation Division of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and agents with the 24th Judicial District Drug Task Force, with the assistance of multiple additional law enforcement partner agencies, has resulted in the indictment of 19 people and the arrest of 16 of them on a variety of charges. Beginning in June 2021, drug agents spent twelve months on an undercover investigation into methamphetamine being sold in the West Tennessee area. The results of this drug operation were presented to the Hardin County Grand Jury, resulting in the indictment of 19 individuals. The charges include trafficking methamphetamine, conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, intimidation of witnesses, and other drug-related charges. On Monday, TBI and 24th Judicial District Drug Task Force agents, along with the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, Savannah Police Department, Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) and Tennessee Highway Patrol, began making arrests of those indicted. In addition to the arrests, officers also seized three guns, methamphetamine, acid, marijuana, various pills, and drug paraphernalia. As part of this operation, law enforcement also

Martin police address shooting at MTD Products, seek 2 additional suspects
July 29, 2022 Kyle Peppers MARTIN, Tenn. — The Martin Police Department confirms one man was arrested following a shooting at MTD Products on Monday. 27-year-old Anthony Hogard was taken into custody after allegedly being involved in a shooting incident in the factory’s parking lot. A police report states that officers responded to MTD around 12:25 p.m. on July 25 in reference to possible shots fired. Upon arrival, an officer made contact with Hogard, who said he was walking to his vehicle when a man wearing a ski mask in the front passenger seat of a white Infiniti SUV asked him to come over to him. Hogard stated that he ignored the man, and that the white SUV then blocked in his vehicle. According to Hogard, the man opened the SUV’s door and fired 1-2 rounds at him. Hogard says he then grabbed his own firearm from his car, and fired approximately 2-3 shots back at the man. Hogard stated the SUV left the property immediately after the exchange of gunfire. An investigation revealed there were multiple employees walking through the parking lot on their scheduled break during the incident. A police report states that officers located two spent steel shell casings and one spent brass shell casing at the scene. Hogard’s firearm was secured at the scene and brought to the police department as evidence. According to Martin Police Department Assistant Chief Phillip Fuqua, the other suspects involved have been identified as 23-year-old Kentrel Ne’Air Siner and 21-yearold Laci D. Benson, who are both believed to be from the Savannah area.
Improving Maternal Health
Cont’d from page 9 to address the issues of maternal mortality and other matters that impact the quality of life of all Americans was simply our mutual impatience with the current widening, unproductive partisan divide in Washington, D.C., and throughout nearly all the state legislatures. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr once prophetically affirmed, “We must be impatient with injustice.” We are impatient with the injustice of nonproductive political polarization in America. We also believe that beyond the labels and aisles of our different political parties, there is both an opportunity and a responsibility to work together to address the systemic injustices and disparities of our nation. Fortunately, there are some recent successful bipartisan actions by the U.S. Congress that each of us have personally supported and endorsed. The John Lewis National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Endowment Revitalization Act is now law. This new law provides funds to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to conduct research into and to address minority health disparities. Also, the Maternal Health Quality Improvement (MHQI) Act enacted by the U.S. Congress is now law. The MHQI Act looks specifically at reducing maternal mortality among Black women and other minority women and creates racial and ethnic bias training programs for health care providers while studying best practices to reduce and prevent discrimination in the American health care system. But there is much more that needs to be done to ensure equality and equity in how our nation provides the highest quality health care to all. Today the U.S. Congress should also pass the Connected Maternal Online Monitoring Services (MOM) Act that will allow Medicaid to cover remotely monitoring pregnant women from their homes who are at a higher risk of complications. Imagine a woman in her third trimester of a high-risk pregnancy having to take public transportation to the doctor’s every two weeks for a check-up. Instead, with the passage of the MOM Act, the doctor can remotely monitor the mother’s vital signs and basic labs. If a problem arises, home health care providers or an ambulance can be sent. Lastly, there is also a bipartisan bill, the Telemental Health Care Access Act, that Congress should pass. That bill would reduce barriers to telemedicine and make health care more accessible to Medicare patients. We witnessed the success of telehealth services during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Senator William “Bill” Cassidy (Republican) is an American physician and politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Louisiana, a seat he has held since 2015. He served in the Louisiana State Senate from 2006 to 2009 and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. Cassidy sponsored the John Lewis National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Endowment Revitalization Act; the Maternal Health Quality Improvement (MHQI) Act; the Connected Maternal Online Monitoring Services (MOM) Act; and the Telemental Health Care Access Act. Senator Cassidy can be reached at Cassidy.senate.gov. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr, (Democrat), worked as the North Carolina Youth Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; civil rights icon and former Executive Director and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); chemist and first to coin the term “environmental racism,” and is currently president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and executive producer/host of The Chavis Chronicles on PBS TV stations across the nation, and can be reached at dr.bchavis@nnpa.org 08-04-22 CSENEWS P.12

#NNPA BLACKPRESSREVIEW: NNPA NEWSWIRE — Jordan Peele delivers with Nope, a film set on the margins of Hollywood, focusing on the family of the Black jockey captured in the early films of trailblazing photographer and filmmaker Eadweard Muybridge. By incorporating Muybridge’s short film, “The Horse

pared to horror and psychological thriller giant Alfred Hitchcock and science-fiction legend Steven Spielberg, but Peele is in a league of his own. Peele’s masterful ability to merge two beloved film genres, with social commentary on issues of race, gender, class, and sexuality is unparallel in the current filmic
landscape. Initially celebrated for his comedic chops, Peele burst onto the horror scene with his cult-classic horror Get Out (2017) and followed-up with the scary and often meandering Us (2019). Both films used symbolism brilliantly and succeeded as horror films because the monsters were familiar characters, symbolic of society and played by characters who look and feel like us. There is an otherworldliness about Peele’s films that traffic in the mundane, to highlight the complexity of the precariousness of a world driven by a perverse need for power, influence, and capital. Peele humanizes those who live on the margins or the underbelly of the society
and brilliantly recasts their lives into the horror show that is often America and what it means to live on the margins of society while the tokenism and appropriation of your culture is center stage. Peele delivers with Nope, a film set on the margins of Hollywood, focusing on the family
of the Black jockey captured in the early films of trailblazing photographer and filmmaker Eadweard Muybridge. By incorporating Muybridge’s short film, “The Horse in Motion,” Peele elevates the importance of Black jockeys in the many aspects of American culture and the significance of the Black presence and influence at the beginning of Hollywood. The Haywood family is a Black family that has worked as horse wranglers for Hollywood for over a century. They are the descendants of the Black jockey showcased in the Muybridge film and are still stuck in the same position as their ancestors despite the change in time and ostensibly

space. Keith David plays Otis Haywood, Sr., the patriarch of the Haywood clan who is hell bent on maintaining his ancestor’s greatest dream. Daniel Kaluuya stars as Otis, Jr. (OJ), who works with his father and is unimpressed by the movie business or the jackasses who permeate filmmaking culture.
Although OJ, who is Black, is the expert on the movie set, he is belittled and demeaned by all of the White folks on set from the director to the production assistants. Keke Palmer stars as Emerald, the free-spirited daughter who plays to the hostile audience, literally listing all of her skills and abilities as she performs servitude. The audience knows if Emerald was white, the offspring of Hollywood royalty, and working with all of those skills, Emerald would be the star or director of the film and calling the shots. Such is not the case with the Haywood clan, who is relegated and reminded of their position on the lower rungs of society and Hollywood
throughout the film. Desperate for money and fame after being kicked off set, the Haywood family decides to capture the greatest spectacle ever – unidentified flying objects (UFOs), now called unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). OJ and Emerald set out to photograph and record the alien life that is omnipresent yet largely ignored by those who live with them on the outskirts of Hollywood. Instead of engaging scientists or the government, the Haywoods set out to do it themselves so they can reap the financial rewards and adoration of an industry and public that has little to no use for them otherwise. The Haywoods embody the “find a way or make one,” spirit of Black independent cinema and literally create and capture the story that was always worth telling but undervalued by Hollywood and society. Along the way, they pick up Angel (Brandon Perea), a techie with an obsession with outer space and Antlers (Michael Wincott), a maverick cinematographer who is still chasing cinematic glory in spite of his elite status in the industry. Antlers, who insists he captures images, but is not part of the story, disposes of his philosophy, deciding to be part of the spectacle and jeopardizes the entire shoot and lives in a harrowing scene. One of the most interesting parts of the film is the number of Easter Eggs (intertextual
references) strewn throughout the narrative. In fact, it is an intertextual reference to 1980s sitcoms that is most harrowing and provides the context and strongest symbolism of tokenism and what that means for people of color pursuing the Hollywood dream. Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun) is a former child star who survived a merciless attack by a chimpanzee named Gordy during the taping of a hit 1980s sitcom. Jupe now runs Jupiter’s Claim, a Western-themed amusement park, pulling in an audience that would probably be at Disneyland if they could afford it. Instead, Jupiter’s Claim fits the bill, and Jupe who survived the brutality of the attack and the tokenism of Hollywood, clings to his desire to be the star of the show. While he appears to work with OJ in taking horses off of his hands to keep the horse farm going until OJ can afford to buy them back, Jupe actually works against his closest ally in order to create a spectacle for attendees at the expense of all involved.
Nope is a commentary on so many things – the environment, animal cruelty, racism, sexism, heterosexism, the entertainment industry – and shows how all of those things are interconnected in shaping who we are as a society. It’s the intersectionality for me.
With a storyline told through a historical lens that interrogates society and the people who make up this world and the next, strong performances and a brilliant use of camp and other comedic tools, Peele does it again, making a must-see film that will be talked about in film classes, the barbershop, dinner tables, Hollywood, and the like for many years to come.) 08-04-22 CSENEWS P.18

Man charged with rape after impregnating teen: MPD
by: Morgan Mitchell Posted: Aug 2, 2022 / 07:11 AM CDT MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police arrest a man they say raped a young girl. Freddie Cooper, 38, is charged with aggravated statutory rape. Police found out about the alleged incident after the victim’s grandmother took her to the hospital for severe stomach pain and discovered the teen was pregnant. Shortly after, police say the victim gave birth. The victim told investigators that she had been in a sexual relationship with Cooper and he was the father of her baby. Police did not release the victim’s exact age but the crime report states that Cooper and the victim have an age gap of 22 years and 9 months. Cooper was taken into custody where he admitted to police he had sex with the underage teen.
