Hosea Taylor MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was arrested after allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend when she refused to give him her food stamp card. The victim told police she was sitting in her car in the 3400 block of Briar Park West when Hosea Taylor walked up to the vehicle Saturday. That’s when he reportedly assaulted her and stole her backpack, which he thought contained her wallet. After speaking with the victim, police said they spotted Taylor and followed him to a home on Winchester, where he was taken into custody. He reportedly admitted to stealing the backpack from the victim. T aylor was charged with domestic assault and robbery. I n December, police responded to another alleged domestic incident involving the couple. Taylor was arrested in that incident but charges were later dropped.

CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Thirty days of that suspension will be served as active suspension and the remainder on probation,Êaccording to a news release. Hopson is accused of ethical misconduct connected to her representation of a client in a criminal case, according to the release. After a hearing, the board determined that Hopson had failed to properly communicate with the client, who was in custody, the release says. The client and his family contacted the court handling the criminal case multiple times with complaints, the release says.

“I never did any other job but hair braiding my whole life,” says licensed hairstylist Fatou Diouf. “I cannot recall a time when I did not know how.” Fatou Diouf is a natural hairstylist who has been fined $16,000 by the state of Tennessee for employing unlicensed hair braiders. According to Forbes, after examining meeting minutes and disciplinary actions for the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, the Institute for Justice identified dozens of braiders and over 30 natural hair shops, who were fined almost $100,000 since 2009 for simply braiding without a government license, none of which were triggered by any health or sanitation violations. The board would generally issue a $1,000 “civil penalty” for every instance of “performing natural hair care services for clients without a license”. Fatou has joined the Institute for Justice and the Beacon Center to testify in favor of bill HB 1809 and SB 2233, which would rule out the need for a state license for natural hair stylists. Currently in the state of Tennessee, braiders must complete at least 300 hours of coursework, which is only offered by 3 schools and can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 for tuition.
CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Police say agents bought several of the items and then kept an eye on Cooper. They followed both women to another location where they searched Pressley’s vehicle. Inside, they say they found a large amount of marijuana edibles, more than $1,000 in cash and a loaded gun, which they believe Cooper had in her possession while manning her booth at the church event. Both Cooper and Pressley now face felony drug charges and are in the Chatham County Jail. However, agents say they do not believe Pressley participated in the edible sales that occurred on the church property. CNT agents also say Cooper was actively advertising the illegal baked goods on various social media sites. Based on CNT’s investigation, agents determined this event was hosted by an outside vendor and that the church was unaware of any illegal activities occurring on its property.

The CrimeSEEN Examiner News Activists and others line up facing police at the scene of an officer-involved shooting in South Memphis on Monday night. WREG.com
Thursday, 09-20-2018
Officer-involved shooting in Memphis CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Banks’ mother, Janice Banks, (right) said she believes the officer who shot her son lacked training. “There’s a rookie that’s waiting to get on the force just waiting to slaughter anybody’s child, not knowing it’s going to be my child,” she said. District Attorney General Amy Weirich said she asked TBI to look into the case after receiving new information. MPD was initially conducting its own inquiry. According to police, officers stopped Banks near Gill Avenue and Pillow Street in South Memphis around 6:30. Police haven’t said what the traffic stop was for, but sources told WREG that Banks he was in his mother’s car, which shouldn’t have pulled any reports up. Officers approached the vehicle and asked the driver for his ID and insurance information, and the driver told them he had neither. Police said he “began reaching downward when an officer advised that he saw a gun inside the vehicle.” He then drove away, striking a curb before he was stopped a second time about a half-mile away on Gill, when he got out of the car and ran, police said. There was a “confrontation,” and Banks was shot by police. Witnesses and Banks’ mother said police shot into a house on Gill where Banks had run inside. Police didn’t confirm that, but bullet holes can be seen in the house’s door and windows. Police can only pursue car chases if they’re violent felonies, but they can chase on foot for anything, MPD told WREG.ÊOfficers can only shoot when they feel their life or another’s life is in danger. Police said they recovered a handgun at the scene. Janice Banks has disputed the police account, saying her son didn’t own a gun as far as she knew, and had been shot in the back by police. “Yeah they shot him in the back,” she said Monday night. “They shot him multiple times, but one of the shots was shot in the back.” Martavious Banks has six outstanding warrants for suspended licenses, assault and violation of probation. None were for violent felonies. It’s unclear if police were ever given his name before he drove away.ÊTennessee law also allows people to have guns in their cars, as long as they’re not felons. Monday night’s shooting led to a tense situation between police, Banks’ family and activists that lasted late into the night. Some in the crowd demanded to know why TBI wasn’t conducting an investigation. “All this commotion over here for one somebody,” Janice Banks said. “Ain’t kill nobody, no petty warrants, maybe a citation warrant, he killed nobody, no robbing, no stealing or taking from nobody.”
