SQUIRREL SEASON OPEN
Believe it or not but fall hunting season has rolled in to town. It is a time that most hunters start getting that feeling that only being out in the woods can satisfy. Squirrel season has a way of getting hunters fired up for getting in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. Hunting squirrels is so much fun because they know that you are after them and from the moment they spot you it becomes like a game of chess. They will make a move and wait for you to make the next move. Until then they will not raise a hair, literally. It requires stalking and shooting skills because the squirrels will certainly be on their anti-stalking game. The reports I have received is that there are plenty of squirrels this season. Alex Kent reported harvesting 6 one day and 5 the next while Eddie Wise reported harvesting 8 one day. Although some hunters do use dogs most do not. Dogs are not required to have a successful hunt. If you are wanting something to do to social distance then squirrel hunting just might be right for you.Ê

$38,000 IN 24 HOURS TO SURPASS DAY OF GIVING GOAL!Ê In a year where everything is different, Lane College made history during its 4th Annual #IAMLANEDay of Giving by exceeding expectations and our goal of $25,000 in 24 hours. Over $38,000, our largest one day total to date, was raised to support our three Day of Giving initiatives that included the student emergency fund, the student retention fund, and the rebuilding the halls fund.Ê “Because we did not have the usual events on campus to push the Day of Giving, we had to rely soley on email, social media and text reminders. We honestly did not know what to expect this year, states Lisa Peoples, Lane College Director of Annual Fund. The response of overwhelming support was a wonderful encouragement to our faculty, staff and students. We could not be more grateful to all of our supporters for jumping in to support Lane during this unprecedented time.” Lane is grateful for theÊshares, likes and posts on social media, and mostÊ especially thankful for the gifts to Lane that allowed us to meet the challenge of raising $25,000 in 24 hours in order to receive an additional matching gift of $25,000. In the middle of a pandemic you definitley showed the world that #WeAreLane and we are #STRONGERTOGETHER.

MIXED REACTIONS ON GOVERNOR’S WEAR MASK MANDATE The mask mandate in Madison County as been extended. Friday Governor Bill Lee issued an executive order extending local leaders in the 89 counties the authority to issue a mask mandate through September 30. This was issued to county and city mayors giving them the choice to Mayor Conger require residents to wear mask longer. Also on Friday, Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris and City of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger declared an extension of the mask date until September 12. Saturday, Madison County alone had a total of 2.264 confirmed cases. Some residents of Jackson don’t think the mask mandate is needed. “I don’t mind it actually because it’s just like you rather wear a mask than get sick,” said Sherreda Peggs. Jerrieann Bennett says its her right to not have to wear a mask. “I don’t think we ought to be made to wear a mask as I think it should each persons choice.” With this local extension executive order, state local leaders will have the choice to extend the mandate even longer.Ê Extensions will depend on if case rates begin to rise higher or decrease significantly. STATE OF TENNESSEE FACES LAWSUIT OVER LETTING COUNTIES REQUIRE MASKS The State of Tennessee is facing a lawsuit over Republican Governor Bill Lee’s decision you let counties issue certain orders to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly citing their ability to require people to wear mask. The citizens group “Citizens for Limited Government Governor Bill Lee and Constitutional Integrity” also known as Tennessee Standards, and two individuals filed the lawsuit in Davidson County Chancery Court. The lawsuit claims a state law dealing with the Governor’s powers during an emergency violates sections of the Tennessee Constitution, including provisions about the separation of powers. Governor Lee signed executive order number 59 on Friday which extends the State of Emergency. By signing executive order number 60, this allows governing bodies to meet electronically regarding essential business as long as they provide electronic access to the public and meet the safeguards established in the order to assure openness and transparency.Ê The Governor also signed executive order number 61, which allows for remote notarization and remote witnessing of documents, subject to compliance with certain procedures.
