FALL IS HERE

Can you believe that summer is gone and fall is not only in the air but is actually here?Ê Amazing that with Ray Jones the fall weather rolled in just SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO as the date hit the calendar. numberonecoach@hotmail.com The temperatures dropped or 731-694-8614. into the low 70’s and upper 60’s just in time to celebrate the end of a summer that we have never seen the likes of. With a little luck things might cool off a bit in our nation as the cool temps continue to exist. Fall is special because of the many changes that occur around this time of the year. People tend to relax as fall leaves begin to drift from trees and it has a calming affect which brings on a relaxing atmosphere. Fall marks a change in not only weather but also the attitude towards the outdoors. The threat of extreme heat is replaced with mild cool breezes that is romantic and calls for sitting outside for longer periods of time. It is time to make the smooth transition from summer to fall and enjoy the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. THE PHOTO IS ANDREW DOUGLAS RELAXING ON A COOL FALL DAY.

MEMPHIS MAN RAPES HIS GIRLFRIEND’S 16-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 BELLA SHEDIO -SCOOPMEMPHIS 36-year-old William Mask was charged with rape after a 16-year-old girl told police her mother’s boyfriend dragged her into a bedroom by her hand, threw her onto the bed, pulled down her pajama pants, and forcibly penetrated her. On September 8th, a 16-year-old girl contacted police about an incident that occurred in the 4000 block of Ann Arbor Court. She told police she was in the kitchen of her home when her mother’s live-in boyfriend, William Mask, grabbed her hand and dragged her into a bedroom. She then told police she had tripped over a basket while being dragged and fell onto the bed.

William Mask (SCSO) She proceeded to tell Mask no and tried to move to the front of the bed to get away. She advised police Mask pulled her pajama pants and underwear down as she continued to tell him to stop. She stated he proceeded to pull his pants down and pull her towards him by her legs. She stated he was wearing a condom when he laid on top of her and forcibly had sex with her by penetrating her vagina with his penis. She advised police it hurt, but he abruptly stopped and she observed “white stuff” inside of the condom. She proceeded to pull her pants up and ran to her grandmother’s house. William Mask was arrested and charged with rape. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $75,000 bond.

Johnson Street, Alamo, TN AND SENDS TEXT THAT HE WILL KILL THEM BOTH, PER REPORT September 18, 2020Cheyanne Conboy-SCOOPMEMPHIS 35-year-old Calvin Hinton was charged with aggravated kidnapping and theft of property after taking his daughter from her mother’s house along with a school laptop and two school tablets in spite of lacking custody or visitation rights. On September 12th, Memphis Police Officers were dispatched to an aggravated kidnapping call at 2300 block of South Parkway East. The officers spoke with Lakeisha Coleman who stated that the father of her child, Calvin Hinton, took their 2-year-old daughter while she was at work. Lakeisha advised that Calvin had also taken a Shelby County School, Hewlett Packard laptop valued at $500, and two Shelby County School, Microsoft tablets valued at $500 dollars as well. The total value of the items totaled to $1,500. According to Lakeisha’s 16-year-old son, one of the young children let Calvin into the residence and the boy saw him leave with his sister and the items.

Opinions . . . . . . . . The promise of America in peril I wrote this four years ago (JacksonSun,com) and not a damn thing has changed. ÊIn fact, it has all come to fruition. ÊAre poets and writers prophets? ÊYou already know. ÊI’m just trying to told somebody . . . James E Cherry Reality has set in by now:Ê Donald J. Trump is the 45th President of the United States of America.ÊTo his credit, he saw the exposed nerve of frustrated white, suburban and rural working class voters and pressed upon it.Ê Trump, the least qualified and most unfit of any candidate for president in U.S. history, appealed to his followers with promises of building a wall, mass deportation, repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act.ÊTrump has pulled the wool over his followers’ eyes, and they’ll be groping in the dark for years.ÊAlready, the wall has become a fence, and the ACA will be amended more than anything else.ÊWashington insider Reince Priebus has been named chief of staff; so much for “draining the swamp” he promised as well. What we witnessed on Nov. 8 was nothing short of an exercise in white nationalism.Ê The numbers bear this out.Ê Whites comprised 70% of the voters on Election Day.Ê According the BBC, 58% of those whites voted for Trump.Ê This is the same Trump who made disparaging comments about Latinos, Muslins, African Americans, Jewish Americans, the disabled and women.ÊSpeaking of women, white women made of 37% of the voters and 53% of them voted for Trump.ÊEighty percent of white evangelicals, according to the Washington Post, voted for Trump.Ê I’m almost convinced these people met down at the Lodge on Saturday night and finalized plans on how to “take our country back.”Ê The Senate, House of Representatives and the Presidency are now under conservative control, which means the Supreme Court is as well.Ê Although Hillary won the popular vote, the Democrats didn’t help their cause when 6 million of them didn’t bother to go to the polls.Ê Because of her unpopularity and inability to excite her own base, Hillary would’ve had a hard time against Daffy Duck. One promise President elect Trump will make good on is his appointment of conservatives to the Supreme Court, which will affect civil liberties for generations to come.ÊThe Voter’s Rights of 1965 has been so eviscerated by the conservative court already until all that remains is a eulogy and a proper burial.ÊRoe v WadeÊis moribund, which means that a woman’s body could be under the control of the government.ÊTo be prolife and for the death penalty is symptomatic of a confused mind.ÊHow can one life be more valuable than another? But Trump poses an immediate problem.ÊHis presidency lends legitimacy to racism, homophobia, sexism, bigotry and xenophobia.ÊThis is not based on fabrication or speculation, but comments from the president-elect over the last 18 months.ÊIt didn’t take long for his bigotry to trickle down.ÊMiddle schoolers in a Michigan lunchroom brought their Hispanic classmates to tears with shouts of “build the wall.”Ê The Klan in North Carolina marched through the streets in celebration of his win. The alt-right movement declared the Trump victory “a dream come true and the first stage for identity politics for white people.”Ê According the Southern Poverty Law Center, six days after the election, there have been 437 reported cases of hateful intimidation and harassment.ÊTrump’s hiring of white nationalist Steve Bannon as chief strategist gives validity to his racist ideology.ÊHis design for a Muslim registry is a prerequisite for internment camps and is a middle finger to the promise of America. It’s the promise of America that makes the country great:Ê “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ... all men are created equal with certain inalienable rights. ... Common good, equality, justice ... give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”Ê It’s that promise that has keep people believing in the country when the country didn’t believe in them, the same promise that attracts people from around the world in search of a better life.Ê In theory, that promise applies to everyone or it applies to no one.Ê In reality, with the election of Trump, its good day to be white and male.Ê But for the rest of us, the ground shifted on Nov. 8,Êand we’ve been trying to find our footing and answers to the question:Ê Whose America is this? Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States and is the president, whether you like it or not, of all Americans.Ê The least any conscientious, patriotic American can do is continue to speak out, organize, protest and resist ignorance and intolerance wherever they find it.Ê This too is part of the promise of America.Ê But for now, as Jackson native and music legend Gil Scot-Heron would say, it’s Winter in America.ÊRegrettably, it portends to linger deep into summer and for many seasons to come. JAMES E. CHERRY IS A POET, NOVELIST AND SOCIAL CRITIC FROM JACKSON. cherry@jamesecherry.com

City of Jackson letting garbage contract expire July 2021 with Waste Management contract breached

The CSENews

By ‘Downtown’ Rickey Brown rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com

The City of Jackson reported that Waste Management breached a 2016 trash pick up contract, causing them to not pick up “bulky waste”Ê to make sure the contract is being upheld, the City of Jackson is taking a different approach. The contract with Waste Management with the City of Jackson is up to July 2021 next year, Jackson Mayor Scott Conger says they have decided not to renew the contract and give more Responsibilities to the city and citizens. The contract will include things that can be helpful to workers and citizens such as curbside pickup and accessibility for people with different disabilities.Ê According to Mayor Conger “the responsibilities were not defined, and then we had some things in there that we’re going to also remove and let kind of the construction and temporary dumpsters be open to the market. Instead of everything being exclusive,” the Mayor said. Mayor Conger also hopes to implement a city wide recycling program.
