A RARE BEEKEEPER

West Tennessee Every now and then you run across some- OUTDOORS thing you have never seen before and I did with Ray Jones just that the other day. My wife, granddaughSend photos to: ter and I went over to Henning, Tennessee to numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 meet a lady for some fresh honey. Nothing about that is unusual except that it was an African American female beekeeper. We met up at a gas station but conversation led to us going home with her to see her bee hives. Needless to say that being around live bee hives is quite the experience. They make an interesting noise while buzzing about with many on the honey comb some on the outside and others looking around for someone to bother. I had one come close to me and when I told her about it see said he was a scout and they knew her but were checking me out. She said the bee went back to tell the others that I was there and more of his friends would be back the next time so that is when I got back in my truck. Jasmin has been a beekeeper for about five years and has a certification to be a professional beekeeper. She explained that bees have different roles, different personalities and are very smart. They can travel as much as five or six miles in a day and return to their hives. They pollinate all over and help the environment far more than people realize by helping with our food supply. Give her a call at 731-460-9782 for some good fresh honey grown in the Good Ole Outdoor of West Tennessee. PHOTO IS JASMIN TENDING HER BEE HIVES.

4 HOMICIDES IN 3 WEEKS IN JACKSON BY DAVID THOMAS MAY 23, 2022 An investigation continues into the shooting death of a male – age unknown – that occurred on North Highland Avenue between Skyline Drive and North Parkway, May 20. The homicide is the fourth in Jackson in three weeks. The shooting caused an automobile accident and responding officers dispatched to the 1700 Block of North Highland Avenue located one vehicle with a deceased subject on the inside. The Jackson Police Department is trying to locate or identify a black sedan that would have been traveling northbound on North Highland Avenue approaching North Parkway at approximately 5:12 p.m., Friday. May 3 The Jackson Police Department responded to a shots fired call shortly after midnight, May 3. An early morning shooting in the 200 Block of Lincoln Street in Lincoln Courts took the life of a male victim – age not available. This is an ongoing investigation – but the JPD stresses they are getting ‘little to no cooperation’ from citizens in the area. If anyone has any information please call the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477. April 29 Tyreece Miller, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee, and Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley announced the arrest of double murder fugitive Jadan Jermaine Bills, 19, of Jackson, May 11. Bills was wanted for Two Counts of First Degree Murder, and Three Counts of Attempted First Degree Murder. These charges resulted from an April 29, 2022, shooting where Bills is alleged to have shot inside a vehicle, occupied by five people, on North Parkway at the U.S. Highway 45 Bypass. Four occupants were hit and two victims, ages 18 and 16, died. On May 4, the Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force based in Jackson adopted the case for a fugitive investigation. The Task Force tracked Bills to a motel on Highway 365 in Little Rock, Ark. Around 4:30 p.m. today, the Task Force from Jackson traveled to Little Rock and met with a U.S. Marshals Task Force based in Little Rock. Bills was located inside a room and was safely taken into custody. He was booked into the Pulaski County Jail and later extradited back to Tennessee.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR COMES TO JACKSON

Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley, Jr. hosts “Meet and Greet” Jackson, TN – Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley, Jr., Democratic candidate for Governor will host a “Meet and Greet” in this weekend in Jackson. The event will be held on the Lane College campus at the Water Tower Place on Sunday, May 29, 2022 from 2pm – 4pm. Councilman Smiley is a lifelong democrat, a native Memphian, lawyer, author and a member of the Memphis City Council. His team has visited almost all of the 95 counties throughout the state and looks forward to engaging voters in Madison County. A tireless fighter against gun violence he recently renamed a street in honor of the slain rapper from Memphis Young Dolph. In his last debate, he stated that teachers are woefully underpaid and do not make the wages they should be. He proposed a living wage for teachers that would not be tied to student performance. According to Smiley, “Bill Lee’s administration does not reflect the values or views of the people of Tennessee. We need a governor who is competent but also understands what it’s like to struggle in Tennessee”. CHIP HOLLAND - OWNER Cholland@gototherange.com www.gototherange.com

And Your Point is . . .

Make Mental Wellness Part of Total Health for Black Communities Published 2 days ago on May 22, 2022By OAKLAND POST

These conversations have provided a platform for discussion and opportunities to educate, dispel misinformation and break stigmas.

Rhonda Smith, executive director of California Black Health Network. By Rhonda Smith The next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in California has arrived. As the state begins to implement its SMARTER Plan, protecting ourselves and our communities from COVID-19 and its fast-spreading variants through vaccination can ensure better outcomes for us all. Despite mask mandates ending, we must continue to spotlight the importance of keeping Black and African Americans healthy and encourage our community to think about being more proactive about our overall health and well-being. We can start by focusing on our whole selves—our physical, mental, and emotional health. The pandemic has propelled health inequity and racism into news headlines and helped spark national conversations about the health disparities that face the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. The impact of decisions about the treatment we receive or deserve are often driven by racism and the resulting implicit bias that individuals who have sworn to take care of their patients often harbor. And this affects our physical, mental, and emotional health and ultimately health outcomes.

A reflection on our historical relationship with the medical community has certainly warranted the level of distrust of the healthcare system, and the many stories of outright racism and discrimination experienced in the past. One example is Dr. James Marian Sims, who performed surgeries and experiments on Black women without their permission or anesthesia. Another example, which many of us are familiar with, is the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which was administered by the U.S. Public Health Service from 1932 to 1972 to better understand syphilis.

During the four decades, hundreds of Black men in Tuskegee, Alabama, were injected with the disease without giving their consent; and even once penicillin became a common syphilis treatment, they were left untreated. Our distrust of the healthcare system has been further shaped by present-day experiences, with many Blacks and African Americans saying they have experienced racism during a medical visit or that their physical pain or discomfort is frequently ignored. Unfortunately, our healthcare system has often disregarded BIPOC patient needs, and systemic racism has morphed into a true public health crisis. Despite this, as Blacks and African Americans, we have persisted. Our individual and cultural resilience equips us to persevere and survive in a system built on a foundation of discriminatory design. As part of our culture and heritage, we have relied on an oral tradition that passes on stories about how we should care for ourselves and remedies that

heal our ailments. I hear many of these stories through our network and I heard them in my own family. We have relied on our own learnings; and in some instances, we have relied on our faith. And through it all, we have found ways to maintain our health and wellness. However, we are weathered, and enduring resiliency is hard. If we are not whole, we are not healthy. If we are not healthy, we cannot be resilient. Resilience is an element of mental health, and our whole health comprises elements of physical, mental, and emotional wellness. This means our whole health needs to be a priority, not only one dimension or another. We must invest in our individual health and wellbeing and make it a priority so that our families, community, and all of us will be healthier and live longer. We must look to the past to inspire a better future so that we can rewrite our heath history here in California. I appreciate the state’s COVID-19 awareness campaign which has sought to address mental health concerns and other issues that impact us by partnering with African American and Black medical experts and advocates for community conversations. These conversations have provided a platform for discussion and opportunities to educate, dispel misinformation and break stigmas. We are not strangers to race-based adversity, and its impact on our health and wellbeing. Racism, health inequities inequity, police brutality, and residential redlining each affect public health in its own unique way. Yet we continue to persevere. Black History Month was a time to remember our past, honor our heroes, celebrate our great legacy of achievement. The theme for the month this year was “Black Health and Wellness”, and it was meant for us to prioritize total wellness and build a healthier history for us now and for generations to come. For more about COVID-19, including guidance on masking and testing, visit covid19.ca.gov. You should also visit covid19.ca.gov or the CDC.gov more timely, accurate information about the pandemic. BROOKS RECOGNIZES STUDENT WRITERS - Cont’d from page 3 The challenge gives students an opportunity to examine the impact of violence on their lives in classroom discussions and in written form by communicating what they think should be done to change our culture of violence. By encouraging young people to make personal commitments to do something about the problem, the program ultimately seeks to empower them to break cycles of violence in their homes, schools, and communities. Brooks sees an added advantage of the program, “A coalition of educational, government and corporate leaders has forged a lasting partnership to prevent youth violence in our community – Dr. Marlon King, Mayor Scott Conger and Diane Holman from Kellogg’s, Inc. all received recognition for their support of the program”. The event was held at the Doubletree Hotel. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Jessica Davis from WBBJ-TV and Jackson-Madison County School Board Chairman, James “Pete” Johnson was the keynote speaker. The twenty school ambassadors, their parents, teachers and principals were recognized. The students received trophies, certificates, a tablet and their writings were published in a souvenir booklet. Also, the girl and boy who wrote the most responsive writings – Kyra Williams and Samuel Latham, both from Northeast Middle School – were announced as the 2022 National Ambassadors. These students two students, a parent of each and their teacher will travel with Councilman Brooks to Washington, DC for the “Do the Write Thing” Challenge National Recognition Week. There, they will attend a dinner at the Kuwait Embassy, tour the U.S. Capitol, meet Congressman and Senators and participate in events at the U.S. Supreme Court and Library of Congress with other students from across the country. Founded and chaired by Councilman Brooks in 2008, over12,000 students from the district have accepted the challenge and submitted writings. “I applaud these students for their willingness to take a stand against youth violence – they are learning to better voice their life experiences and create turning points that effect prevention”.

Love Letter to Flavor Flav We know that we are beautiful. And ugly too. – Langston Hughes I think I love you. How you suck fried chicken grease off chalkboard fingers, in public! Or walk the wrong way down an escalator with a clock around your neck. How you rapped about the poor with a gold-tooth grin. How your gold teeth spell your name. How you love your name is beautiful. You shout your name 100 times each day. They say, if you repeat something enough you can become it. I’d like to know: Does Flavor Flaaav! sound ugly to you? I think it’s slightly beautiful. I bet you love mirrors. Tell the truth, when you find plastic Viking horns or clown shade staring back, is it beauty that you see? Or Vaudeville? To express myself honestly

enough; that, my friend, is very hard to do. Those are Bruce Lee’s words. I mention Bruce Lee here, only because you remind me of him. That’s a lie. But your shades do mirror a mask he wore as Green Hornet’s trusty sidekick. No, I’m not calling names. Chuck D would have set cities on fire had you let him. You were not Public Enemy’s sidekick. You hosed down whole crowds in loud-mouth flame retardant spit. You did this only by repeating your name. Flavor Flaaav! Flavor Flaaav! I think I love you. I think I really might mean it this time. William. Can I call you William? I should have asked 27 lines ago: What have you become? How you’ve lived saying nothing save the same words each day is a kind of freedom or beauty. Please, tell me I’m not lying to us. www.missourireview.com/marcuswicker-love-letter-to-flavor-flav
