While the participation was disappointing, the forum for Jackson City Council candidates was lively, informative and welcoming.
The Jackson-Madison County NAACP branch held its second round if candidate forums at the local office Thursday evening.
Moderator Mr. Harrell Carter welcomed the participants as Pastor and district one candidate J P Stovall opened with a prayer.
Only 5 candidates showed up for the forum which was talked about during the debate. Several citizens in attendance asked key questions and namely the continued neglect of the citizens and services in East Jackson.
How would you answer the question “Who are you?” It’s a simple question that’s difficult to answer because our concept of who we are usually changes over time.
For example, if someone had asked me who I was when I was twenty, the answer would have been different than when I was thirty. At twenty,
I would have answered, “I am a rolling stone, a nickname I acquired during my troubled teenage years. At thirty, I am a wife, mother, and student. At forty, I would have answered I am a nurse and public health administrator.
But by the time I reached fifty, gratitude journaling had introduced me to a Myrtle I didn’t know, so my answer would have included some things I had learned about myself. That’s the transformative power of Gratitude.
When you practice Gratitude, you become more aware
of the positive things in your life, allowing you to see everything in a more positive light. In addition, Gratitude helps to introduce you to yourself.
Gratitude journaling introduced me to my strengths and qualities. It helped me realize how much I had grown and changed over time. I understood my identity more deeply because it connected me with my inner wisdom and intuition. As a result, I started to trust myself more. I became more compassionate toward myself and others. I also became more mindful of the people, experiences, and things that had brought joy and happiness into my life.

Spring turkey season starts Saturday April 15 for adults while the Young Sportsman Hunt is scheduled for April 8-9.
TWRA reports that the numbers are slightly down and therefore they will be decreasing the bag limit to two bearded for adults and one male or female for youths.
A Big Game permit is required to hunt turkey unless hunters have a sportsman license. It is required that they be tagged in the field or report to the TWRA through the Go app for E-tag. Hunting hours are thirty minutes before sunrise to sunset.
Legal hunting equipment includes shotguns using ammunition loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller, longbows, recurve bows, compound bows and crossbows.
Firearms and archery equipment can have sighting devices except those with artificial light capable of locating wildlife. People who have never hunted turkey can add a new adventure to their hunting experiences.

NSPDK Incorporated, Gamma Psi Chapter held its 7th Annual Literacy Luncheon on March 25, 2023 at The Carl Grant Center. The keynote speaker was Mrs. Melody Hawkins, a nationally-recognized, award-winning educator and Jackson TN Native. This years writing contest theme was: What does it mean to live in a Democracy in the United States, and Why is it important to you? The sorority awarded $1000 college scholarship to a graduating senior, Ms. Elise Havercamp of Madison Academic High School and three middle school students, Ameera Cook and Aubrey Lewis of North Parkway Middle School and Chad Terry of West Junior High received one iPad and a momentary.

The University of Memphis lady’s basketball program has found its replacement for Katrina Merriweather in 36-year-old Alex Simmons. Simmons is a former McDonald’s All-American player and a 2-time national champion as a player at Tennessee. She coached Gardner-Webb to a 29-4 record, a conference title last season and to their first NCAA Tournament in 12 years. Simmons played for the legendary Pat Summitt and was a 2x National Champion at Tennessee.

She is a loyal CSE reader for many years and also contributes greatly to community and church events being part of the Macedonia Baptist Church family in Jackson. Most of you know Edith Renee’ from the downtown Post Office window and her work for the Lord at MBC.
She enjoys her church, music and is a 1978 graduate of Jackson Central Merry and also studied at University of Tenn at Martin.
Renee’ is one of the most considerate, thoughtful and caring people I’ve known. We are fortunate and blessed to know her and have the honor to be her friend.

Driver Huckabee is a hard working and dedicated employee. He was recently involved in the drivers promotion process which is very time consuming and difficult.
Driver Huckabee ranked second on the eligible drivers list and was promoted from firefighter to driver April 1, 2023.

The Congressional Black Caucus blasted the Republican-controlled Tennessee state legislature on Thursday after two out Black Democratic state lawmakers were expelled for participating in a protest against gun violence on the House floor.
On Thursday, lawmakers voted to expel state Reps. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) and Justin Pearson (D-Memphis). Their colleague, Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville), who also participated in the demonstration earlier this week, survived her expulsion vote. Johnson is white.
Led by Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), the CBC issued a statement Thursday evening condemning the legislature’s actions and said the Republican majority chose “to abdicate its responsibility to keep their communities safe.”
“Instead of working to keep residents safe from gun violence, they
have taken the unprecedented step of expelling two Black members of the Democratic Caucus who chose to stand with families, teachers, and students to demand gun safety reforms and speak truth to power about the reality of gun violence in their community and across our country,” the statement read.
“The targeted expulsions of Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Justin Pearson – two Black duly elected members representing minority districts –makes clear that racism is alive and well in Tennessee,” it added.
“The GOP-led House chose to silence dissent from not only the Black representatives in the chamber, but the voices of their constituents as well. This move is not only racist and anti-democratic, it is morally-bankrupt and out of step with the overwhelming majority of Americans who believe that we need common sense gun control reforms to save lives.”

I remember a holiday gathering with friends when I was in my mid-fifties, and a cousin said to me, “You sure have changed; your attitude is different. You are not as negative as you used to be.” Little did he know that the Gratitude love bug had bitten me.
For years I struggled with my identity, which had much to do with childhood trauma. But what Gratitude journaling taught me was that everyone has struggles, yet we all have something to be grateful for. So I adopted a more generous and giving mindset, and my actions began to align with my values and beliefs.
Tennessee state capitol days after a deadly mass shooting at the private Covenant School in Nashville last month. The shooting left three 9-yearold children and three faculty members dead.
Jones, Johnson and Pearson led chants on the House floor during the protests. In response, the three were stripped of their committee assignments earlier this week.
In a statement to The Hill, Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) called the actions of Tennessee Republicans “straight up fascism in its ugliest, most racist form.”
“That a Black man was expelled for standing up against the murder of children—but not his white counterpart—says it all,” Lee said, adding “Republicans want to protect guns instead of safeguarding kids. They want to put politics over the lives of the people they represent.”
“They ask for safety for themselves, but not for school children, and they’ll sacrifice the lives of our loved ones for their
lobbyists,” she continued. “Now is NOT the time to be on the sidelines. We better fight back before it’s too late.”
Rep. James Clyburn said he was “disturbed” by the actions of the state legislator and called the expulsions “baseless” and “undemocratic.” Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), an outspoken supporter for gun reform, called the actions an “extremist, undue response” and “blatant abuses of power.”
Ahead of the expulsion vote on Thursday, the three members, who have become known as the Tennessee Three on social media, walked into the House floor with their fists raised. Hundreds of students from around the state cheered their support for the members.
Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) also tweeted her support for Jones on Thursday.

Still, before the vote that expelled him, Jones had a message for Republicans.
“To those who here will cast a vote for expulsion, I was fighting for your children, too, to live free from the terror of school shootings,” Jones said. “If I’m expelled from here, I’ll be back out there with the people every week demanding that you act.”
“If you expel me, I will continue to show up because this issue is too important,” he added.”

JACKSON, Tenn. – In a world where success can sometimes be difficult to attain, JCM Early College High is finding success at every turn. Through hard work and careful planning, both the average ACT score as well as the number of students graduating with associate degrees have increased.
Said JCM Early College High Principal Dr. Nathan Lewis, “I’m proud of the perseverance students are making toward their goals. Each year the graduating class has set that standard of excellence higher and higher. I look forward to seeing what students will accomplish as we continue to move forward.”
In 2022 the ACT average at JCM Early College High was 19.30, which was above the state average of 19.1. In the course of one year, the ACT average at JCM ECH has increased by 1.27 to an average score of 20.57, beating the current state average by nearly one and a half points. From 2021-22 to 2022-23, the number of students scoring 30 or above grew from 3 to 4.
“Our students are changing the narrative for public schools in this region. Whether through ACT boot camps and workshops, or simply by old-fashioned preparation in the classroom, JCM Early College High students are exceeding and expanding expectations for our district,” Superintendent Dr. Marlon King said.

Reading all of the entries for this poetry contest filled me with hope. These young poets wrote on complex topics such as family, home, love, fear, and wonder, and their voices represent the future of the arts and letters. I'm excited for them and what they'll write next!
