GREAT DAY FISHING

One of Larry Jarrett's favorite persons is his aunt Betty Wilson. He decided to take her on a fishing trip and boy did it turn out to be a great day. Larry grew up very close to his aunt because her sister is his mother. If you grew up in the 60's your aunt was just the same as your mother and that was the case with Larry and aunt Betty. Taking her fishing was just like taking his mom out and brought back memories for both of them. Growing up on Jefferson Street was very special in Brownsville because everyone knew who lived in every house and everyone looked out for all of the children. It was like having many relatives. This is where Larry was raised up and his aunt Betty was instrumental in his growth and development. He was delighted to show his appreciation for it and take her fishing. It was the best fishing day of her life but not because they caught a lot of fish but because she spent the day in the Great Outdoors with her favorite nephew and the fish was a bonus. Congratulations Larry for showing your aunt just how much you love and appreciate her. Take your special relative on the trip of their life in the outdoors of West Tennessee. We Are Living in a Historic Period of Time

I have had the privilege of teaching history classes as a substitute teacher these past couple of weeks. I am also teaching that to high school students this upcoming week. I am looking forward to the engaging conversations that I might have with students. On the JMCSS front, I am pleased to report that there seems to be a bond that has formed between Dr. Marlon King and the newly elected school board members. He and his team have displayed transparency in what they are accomplishing throughout the district. They also toured the future as they visited the work site of JCM as well as the new Madison Academic. For those that follow my column you are aware that I generally include a quote to inspire thought and place emphasis on the positive trends that are taking place. “Children have a voice and like adults, they carry stress. Teachers must approach situations with students by first showing respect.” ~ JMCSS Senior Leadership Parents be thankful that this is the mindset of those making decisions for your child’s well-being during these uncertain times. Students if you are looking for a hero to emulate, look no farther that one of your teachers and pay attention to how they approach their duties and responsibilities. I am looking forward to my opportunity to become a part of the winning team at JMCSS and earn my winning mask!

Pay attention to the election process!

There was record-breaking voter turnout for this election. This year has been a historical year for so many reasons. It is my hope that the interest generated in politics will carryover to the next mid-term election. It is up to our teachers to teach social responsibility, citizenship and that character counts. Students you are the next generation of decision makers in our communities, states, and country. Please don’t take your responsibilities lightly. You have the ability to research issues that have meaning to you and your future. Pay attention to the direction your elected officials are leading locally, statewide, and nationally. Your vote matters, use it and don’t waste it. Educate yourself on what you need to know and don’t let the opinion of others become your truth. CSE News 11-19-2020.indd 6

Back in the summer, I ran across this token at home. I have no idea how it managed to be in our family’s possession. I had never heard of the Jackson and Suburban Street Railroad Company. Research revealed that it was the trolley car system in Jackson back in the olden days. The trolleys were originally pulled by mules. In 1896, they were replaced by electric streetcars. Fares were paid using tokens. A 30-day supply was cheaper than paying a nickel at a time. In those days, school children rode trolleys to school and back each day. To prevent accidents at intersections, streetcar drivers stepped on a foot pedal that rang a loud warning gong. For fun, pranksters put grease on the tracks so trolleys couldn’t get up hills. The Jackson & Suburban Street Railroad Co. stimulated northward growth in Jackson by building an amusement park at Campbell Lake called Highland Park and installing tracks out to it that ran down what is now Prospect Street. The park created an additional quadruple-income stream for the trolley car company. First, there was an extra fare to ride out to the park. Presumably, the park also increased rider traffic on weekends generating even more in fares. Third, since the streetcar company owned the amusement park, they benefited from ticket sales for park admissions. And finally, they made extra money off of tokens that were purchased and never used, like the one I found at our house.

An old ad in the Jackson Daily Sun reveals that Highland Park had a circle dip roller coaster, a skating rink, a theatre, a fine dancing pavilion, boating, and a theatrical show every night at 8:30.

Just the facts People used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & Sold to the tannery....... if you had to do this to survive you were “Piss Poor” But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot......they “didn’t have a pot to piss in” & were the lowest of the low The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn’t just how you like it, think about how things used to be.

Remembering Jackson’s Trolley Cars

Q. Jerome Martin

It was also home to Gorman Field, which seated 1,500 spectators for baseball games. The park also included a bandstand and the Polar Bear Ice Cream Parlor. As many as 10,000 people attended special events at Highland Park Trolley cars operated in Jackson until July 2, 1939, when the system was replaced with five buses. I found the trolley car token just before the City of Jackson unveiled its new retro-looking trolley car bus. With the addition of the new bus, the city successfully merged the bus concept with its longgone predecessor, the streetcar. Now to really go back in time, all we need is for the Jackson Transit Authority to build a huge amusement park and we will be set. And, of course, they would need to mint some new tokens.

CITY OF JACKSON APPROVES LAWSUIT: CONT’D FROM PAGE 3

The lawsuit was filed February 2019 and alleges that the complainants were wrongly detained by police due to issues with arrest warrants. The two parties reached a settlement last week and on Tuesday the city’s attorneys discussed the reasoning for why they’re advocating a settlement. “The fact that we can put a cap on these matters, honestly we don’t have a full grasp of what the exposure is,” Attorney John Burleson said. Councilman Ernest Brooks asked Burleson if the issues happened for at least three years, and he answered “yes actually and we think more,” said Burleson. When Jackson City Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard began to argue that his office was understaffed, the meeting took a turn for the worse. Hubbard said the problems with the warrants potentially spanned much longer that they initially thought. Hubbard said he believes the police department is “contributing to the issue” which caused Police Chief Julian Wiser to come up and defend the police department. Wiser said “I could tell the city council that we are currently 25 officers short and I can’t do my job.” Hubbard said. “I feel sorry for you.” Wiser said “let me finish since you brought JPD into this , victims in the city expect us to get a warrant signed and get this criminal offender off the streets, and that’s just one of the many issues we deal with in City Court.” City Council members eventually voted to approve the settlement which will cost taxpayers about $525,000 with the city’s insurance policy covering another $525,000. Jackson Mayor Scott Conger said “it hurts a bit but more importantly these are not our dollars, these are dollars of taxpayers. These are dollars of Jackson citizens that we are responsible for, as we are responsible to be good stewards.” The city’s attorneys suggested if they continue to fight the lawsuits up to 15,000 warrants from city court could go under review.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office Increases Seat Belt Enforcement During

NATIONAL “CLICK IT OR TICKET” MOBILIZATION

Jackson, Tennessee – As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches and more drivers hit the roads, The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.” From November 16 - 29, participating agencies across the state will increase seat belt enforcement as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) nationwide mobilization. “During the ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign, we’ll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the seat belt safety message gets out to all drivers and passengers,” said Sgt. Richard King. “By far, buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. We see the results of not wearing a seat belt all the time. We see the loss of life and devastating injuries that could’ve been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt. That’s why buckling up is more than just a good idea—it’s the law.” According to NHTSA, in 2018, there were 9,778 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 56 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night. In Tennessee, the maximum penalty for a seat belt violation is a fine of $25 for a first violation and $50 for a second or subsequent violation.
