SHERIFF REACTS TO DEPUTY’S COVID-19 DEATH
December 22, 2020 Clint Eiland MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office mourns after losing one of their own to COVID-19. Sgt. Terry Stowe (R) was well-known and well-liked in the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff John Mehr has known that for nearly two decades. “From the time I came in to the sheriff’s office, I saw him as a role model for lots of people,” Sheriff Mehr said. Stowe was more than willing to show new deputies the ropes and help along the way. “He was one of those individuals that was really respected and loved,” Sheriff Mehr said.Stowe contracted COVID-19 weeks ago and his condition quickly worsened. He went to the hospital and was there for several weeks. Stowe died due to complications from COVID-19 on Monday. “It’s a sad time, during the holiday season, for this. Our world has all turned upside down for everybody,” Sheriff Mehr said. As the virus continues to spread rapidly, the sheriff’s office is taking extra precautions. Stowe’s death is the first related to COVID in the department, and Sheriff Mehr is making sure other deputies know they don’t have to grieve alone.

CHRIS SMOOT KAYAK FISHING
There is always a new adventure lurking in the Great Outdoors if you are opened minded and that is just what happened to Chris. He usually does a lot of hunting but fell in love with kayak fishing and it is his new big thing. He loves it so much that it put hunting on the back burner. It is unique because you can get into many places that larger boats can't. It is a new craze that has taken over many area lakes and Chris even takes his entire family. Even though there are five family members everyone has their own kayak. The sport has exploded and they even have big kayak fishing tournaments. Many of these crafts are equipped with all the tools as larger boats such as fish finders. It is a new exciting way to social distance and have fun in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

The Salvation Army Needs Your Help to Rescue Christmas By Pat Patey
The Salvation Army has seen an increase in requests for food and emergency financial assistance to pay rent and utility bills due to Covid-19. But even as local needs have increased, donations to this year’s red kettle campaign may fall short of the goal by as much as $50,000, according to Lieutenant Mark Cancia, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army of Jackson. WOMAN STICKS FORK IN FRIEND’S FACE OVER ARGUMENT ABOUT THEIR LIVING “SITUATION” December 15, 2020 - Jazmyne Laird 24-year-old Olivia Pegues was charged with aggravated assault after police say she stabbed her friend in the face with a fork during an argument about their living situation. On December 8th, Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies Bramlett and Thiele arrived at the residence of Olivia Pegues, at 5209 Braden Drive, in response to an aggravated assault call. Upon arrival, the deputies detained Olivia as she was walking down the driveway until they could further investigate.
Olivia Pegues (SCSO)
Tanesha Walker advised that Olivia let her and her mother, Elnore Hewitt, move into the residence but they got into an argument about the living situation that day. She reported Olivia picked up a vase, threw it in her direction, and started fighting her. During their altercation, Olivia grabbed a fork and stabbed Tanesha in the face below her right eye. Elnore then got involved and confirmed Olivia stabbed her daughter. Olivia admitted she got into an argument with Tanesha but claimed Tanesha attacked her. She stated she saw Tanesha reaching for something so she defended herself by grabbing a handful of silverware and hitting her over the head. Olivia Pegues was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. She was released on her own recognizance.

CSE Reader of the Week “ Mr Bedford Kyles”
Please join me in congratulating my dear friend Mr. Bedford Kyles as the CrimeSEEN Examiner Newspaper “Reader of the Week.” Brother Bedford has been a loyal CSE reader for over 14 years and usually picks his copy up at the Dollar General Store on South Royal Street in Jackson. Mr Kyles, 61, is a member of Greater Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson and serves on the church safety and security committees where he has been a member 14 years. Bedford is also a member of the “P B Pegues Lodge #358 in Jackson having been a Mason 22 years. He is the proud father of 4 children with 1 boy and 3 girls. He has 13 grandchildren with 3 great grandchildren. Bedford is a wonderful Christian friend whom I’m honored to be his friend and appreciate his loyalty to the CrimeSEEN Examiner newspaper!
The Jackson Police Department received Christmas Gift Baskets from leaders of the DTRB “Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network “ and community leaders. According to one of the DTRB Traffic Spotters Network founder “ Madison County Commissioner Jeff Wall “on behalf of the DTRB founders “Kipp Hornburger, Chasity Hornburger, Dan Vaughn, Fred Cunningham, Keith Sherley, Bobby George, Robert Williams, Kimberly Lax, Senator Ed Jackson, Dan Reaves, Michael Doles, David Thomas, Radio Rasheed, and over 4,500 community volunteers we simply say “thank you to the men and women of the Jackson Police Department.” JPD is Jackson’s finest Department of professionals anywhere in the state lead by Chief Julian Wiser, and Deputy Chief’s Barry Michael and Derick Tisdale. We wanted our police Department to know how much the DTRB Traffic Spotters Network appreciates their efforts 24/7 helping to keep us safe. From the traffic enforcement officers on the streets, by passes, I 40 to the 911 dispatch center , to the CID investigators, parking enforcement, records, clerks, and support staff, you are appreciated. The presentation was opened with prayer by Commissioner Jeff Wall, and encouraging words of gratitude from School Superintendent Dr Marlon King, Senator Ed Jackson, Dr Ricky Catlett, Coach Joe Holloway and Kimberly Evans. Chief Founder Downtown Ricky Brown then made the presentation of beautiful Christmas food baskets from the Baker’s Rack. JPD Assistant Chief Tom Cooley and Sgt Chris Chilcote expressed their appreciation to the DTRB Traffic Spotters Network and citizens for their show of support for the Jackson Police Department. Brown said this is the 3rd year the Traffic Spotters Network have recognized the daily efforts of JPD for keeping our streets safe especially traffic enforcement due to the continued rise in traffic fatalities in Jackson and West Tennessee of 7.8% YTD. “Our goal and mission is to support law enforcement officers and first responders and help make our roads, streets and highways safer.”
THE SALVATION ARMY NEEDS YOUR HELP TO RESCUE CHRISTMAS
Cont’d from Page 3 Lt. Cancia says it takes approximately $40,000 a month to operate the local charity, which provides vital support for children and families. In addition to its current social services, The Salvation Army plans to expand services for children in 2021 by launching a virtual learning hub at its community center at 125 Allen Avenue. The learning hub will be a place where kids without Internet access at home can bring their wireless devices and connect to free WiFi. This will make it easier for them to access educational websites to enhance their learning experience. Plans are also in the works to provide tutors to help kids with homework after school. Snacks will also be provided. The red kettle drive is over on December 24, but it’s not too late to make a year-end donation for a 2020 tax deduction. Checks may be mailed to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 486, Jackson, TN 38302. Credit card donations may be made at SalvationArmyJacksonTN.org or by calling 731-422-1271, ext. 241

DOES MEDICARE LEAD TO VIOLENCE?
By Elvis Rogers, Community Columnist Probably not, but medicare commercials certainly can. They can cause you to smash your television, kick your dog, yell at your wife, throw a shoe........and much more, especially if you hear Joe Namath talk about it every five minutes .You see, not only has Joe Namath filled me with the fear of getting old but he’s destroyed many of my fond childhood memories and possibly lead me to question what hell might indeed really be like. Will there be “medicade coverage hotline” commercials there? I sure don’t want to find out. . I grew up with Broadway Joe- the Namath that was predicting victory from pool side prior to going against the Colts as a 16 point underdog..... and winning.TheJoe of white cleats ,panty hose commercials ,Batchelors III, Gilette razors, ( “take it off, take it all off”) and Monday Night Football . That was the young Joe coming out of a bar at 3 A.M. in a full-length fur coat, a bottle of scotch in one hand and a leggy blond in the other......on a game day no less. I liked that Joe. I even liked the drunken middle-aged Joe openly hitting on the female sideline reporter on national T.V. The joe I don’t like is the 77 year old Joe telling me lies in a commercial for supplimental insurance“It’s absolutely free” Come on Joe! I I accepted you at your best and at your worst. Don’t try to play me for a fool in your old age. That spoils everything. See, some commercials (not many) run a disclaimer explaining that the celebrities are “paid actors” In those cases I don’t hold them responsible for what they say. In the absence of that disclaimer I just consider them to be liars. A person that can and will tell a lie for money. Career politician Bob Dole was defeated by Bill Clinton in the 1996 presidential election. In 1998 he did a commercial pitch for Viagra. In between those dated he battled prostate cancer. I do not believe that in 1998 erectile disfunction was first and foremost on his mind and that he just wanted to “ share the news”. He showed me that he was willing to lie to a stranger for money. By this standard there are many more willing to do so as well. Mike Ditka, Joe Theisman, Kelsey Grammer,Joan Londen, Meredith Vieira, Danny Glover, Andy Griffith, Tom Selleck, to name a few. They all looked into the camera and told a lie in the name of my well-being......and a paycheck for them. Just look around you. Is there anything Dr. Phil, Shaq O’Neil or Dave Ramsey won’t pitch? A lie is a lie if you tell it intentionally and with the knowledge that it is not true. It makes no difference if you are famous. A lie is a lie.....and it’s worse if you direct it at old or sick people to get their money. This is how medicare can lead to violence. Excuse me now while I shoot my television. Welcome your thoughts Elvisrogers@yahoo.com - Community Columnist
OP-ED: BLACK VOTERS SHOULD SEE THEMSELVES IN CONGRESSIONAL STAFF
NNPA NEWSWIRE — People of color account for nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population. Yet, Joint Center research found that people of color account for just 11 percent of Washington, D.C.-based senior staff in Senate personal offices. These include positions like chief of staff, legislative director, and communications director – the most influential staff positions in Congress. By Dr. LaShonda Brenson As the new Congress prepares to take office and members of the U.S. House and Senate make key staff hires, it’s time for careful scrutiny of the diversity reflected within the ranks of congressional staff. This is particularly true following an election in which Black voters were critical to its outcome. More than 70 civil rights groups, including African American Mayors Association, Black Futures Lab, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), have formally called on new members of Congress to increase the numbers of staff of color within the mid-level and senior ranks of congressional offices. Our advocacy is particularly important right now, in the period between Election Day and the formal start of the new Congress when most key staff are hired. While we saw marginal improvement in senior staff diversity after the election in 2018, the lack of diversity among senior congressional staff of both parties is longstanding. The data is sobering, if not surprising. Unfortunately, our 2018 report also found that the House was only narrowly more representative with staffers of color comprising just 13.7 percent of senior roles. And this inequity remains true for Republicans who represent large numbers of Black voters and for Democratic members who often depend on Black voters as a critical component of their electorate. There’s not a single Black senior staff member in the personal offices of the Republican Senators who represent Mississippi and Louisiana, despite the fact that African Americans account for a third or more of the population in these states. Similarly, though Black voters made up 37 percent of Democratic voters in Virginia in 2016, and 47 percent of Democratic voters in Maryland, there’s not a single Black person holding a senior staff position within the offices of the Democratic Senators who represent these states. Meanwhile, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is leading by example among congressional Democrats, with Black staff representing just over 53 percent of CBC top staff – compared to just 2.1 percent of the senior staff of White Democratic members of the U.S. House. Only 35 percent of African Americans in the United States live in districts represented by CBC Members, but 78.5 percent of the Black top staff in the U.S. House are employed by CBC Members. This data is particularly troubling at a time when we desperately need more, not fewer, Black staff who can advise Members of Congress in better understanding and responding robustly to structural inequality, racism, and anti-Blackness. Yet, there is an opportunity for change. There will soon be at least 60 new members of the U.S. House and there could be as many as nine new Senators. With each appointing a chief of staff, legislative director, and communications director, that amounts to 207 senior positions. Far more of them should be filled by talented African Americans. Continued progress will require that congressional leadership bring real resources to bear. More Congressional offices should formalize diversity and inclusion plans and measure progress. And all offices should focus on diversifying mid-level positions like press secretary and legislative assistant to further bolster the pool of talent that can eventually step into top positions. Without question, some members can rightfully point to Black staff serving as state or district directors, or to improvements in the diversity of non-senior staff. But at a time when the pandemic and economic turmoil has fallen disproportionally on Black people, robust representation of Black Americans in senior roles matters now more than ever. Real progress is possible, but it will require that Members of Congress choose action over the status quo. And it demands that we hold them accountable for doing so. Dr. LaShonda Brenson is the Senior Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

What People are Saying About Covid-19
I just got over covid and pneumonia. Doctors need to be supplying prescriptions for steroids, antibiotics, and albuterol to those with a positive covid test in case it's needed. Telling patients, like myself, to just take something over the counter and to seek medical attention once your oxygen is at a certain level is not cutting it! This will keep people out of the hospital. My oxygen was normal but a chest xray showed early pneumonia. I caught it early enough that I didn't need hospitalization or oxygen therapy. But the majority of people I know have gotten REALLY sick. Stop believing these doctors that say there is nothing they can do for those recovering at home. I was better by the NEXT DAY once I started medication. Do NOT wait till "it gets worse" before you seek medical attention. I went to the Dr day after my dry cough started and had already gotten pneumonia. This virus progresses really fast. JALINA F.

(Giving Spirit -
Cont’d from page 3 WLCD FM 98.7 Lane College) with Dr. Charles Clark, Cowboy and Bill Marable for the Christmas Holidays 2020. He was so excited and loud that it actually scared me. He has never been that loud since we have been married. He ordered me to get up. I was trying to process what he was talking about because I was still sleepy. Well,
we got dressed to go and receive the very large tote completely filled with food, plus $20.00. Then I received a call from the Humboldt Senior Center telling me to come and pick up a box. Look at God. My heart was full. We gave all of the food and the money to a young woman who house burned three weeks ago. She has four children. She had
to move in with her mother. She is struggling trying to make ends meet. People, it’s better to give than to receive. Please be a blessing to someone this Christmas that is in need. Thanks Daddy for giving me her name. I don’t know this young woman, but to see the smile on her face was worth a million dollars. So thank you Dr. Clark, Coyboy, Bill Marable, and the Humboldt Senior Center. You blessed me and I blessed someone else who was and is in dire need. We all put a
“smile “ on this young woman’s face. Thanks for being a blessing to her. Thanks to Mattie Hall for her assistance in helping us locate this mother. It’s so many people hurting this Christmas. I have close friends suffering from this virus. I am praying, calling, running errands, and delivering food on the doorsteps. Please lift someone up who has been affected by this pandemic. May God’s blessings and peace be with each of you this Christmas.

PUSH IS ON TO INCREASE AFRICAN AMERICAN CONFIDENCE IN COVID VACCINE
NNPA NEWSWIRE — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s foremost infectious disease physician, also championed the work of Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, an African American scientist, whom Dr. Fauci said was at the forefront of the development of the vaccine. “So, the first thing you might want to say to my African American brothers and sisters is that the vaccine that you’re going to be taking was developed by an African American woman. And that is just a fact,” Dr. Fauci remarked. Published 3 days ago on december 18, 2020by blackpressusa By stacy m. Brown, nnpa newswire senior national correspondent @Stacybrownmedia Former President Barack Obama has vowed to take the new COVID-19 vaccination on live television. Dr. Ebony Hilton, a physician in the critical care and anesthesiology department at the University of Virginia Health, is also publicly taking the vaccine and documenting how she’s coping on YouTube. On Day 1 of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, Queens, New York, critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay received the first dose of the two-shot vaccine at about 9:20 a.m. EST on Monday, December 14. What Obama, Dr. Hilton, and Lindsay all have in common is that they are African American. Intentional or not, the rollout has featured prominent Black people. The mistrust in medicine and science in the Black community remains palpable for lots of well-founded reasons. “Truth and transparency are going to start with me,” Dr. Hilton declared. “I want you to see me in real-time as I undergo this process, and as my body adapts as I have this medicine in my body.” Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, an African American, also urged Black people to get vaccinated. 12-24-20

TN DEPT. OF HEALTH ISSUES WARNING REGARDING INCREASED COVID-19 CASES December 20, 2020 Diamond Williams wbbjtv.com NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Leaders with the Tennessee Department of Health provided an update on COVID-19 in the state on Sunday. Officials say Tennessee is ranked number one in the country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases. Health leaders are warning Tennesseans to social distance, avoid
social gatherings and to always wear a mask. Healthcare officials say they believe the rise in cases, is a result of
Thanksgiving gatherings. Every ventilator is in use at hospitals in West Tennessee and two hospitals have requested an emergency ventilator
supply. “If we have another surge after Christmas or after New Years, like we did after Thanksgiving, it will completely break our hospitals. We are asking Tennesseans not to gather with those outside of their household, and when they are outside of their homes to wear masks at all times,” said Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Health, Dr. Lisa Piercy.
Dr. Piercey says Tennessee healthcare is known for being the hub healthcare that many people depend on. She also says with a high number of COVID-19 hospitalizations. It’s going to be difficult to attend to those who may have other emergencies not related to COVID-19.
