SQUIRREL & RACCOON SEASONS OPEN
West Tennessee Hard to believe that hunting season has OUTDOORS started already but it has. with Ray Jones Squirrel season opened August 28 with a Send photos to: 10 game limit while raccoon season is open numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 on private season it will open on public land September 17. They both run through February 28 of 2022. This is always the time of year when many hunters like to get out and blow the dust off hunting firearms. You do not have to be a hunter to enjoy the fun of raccoon hunting. The dog sets out to strike a trail and all you do is wait with your hunting partners until you hear the music start. When they strike that raccoon the party begins and the coon dogs are playing the music. If you have never done it I suggest you take someone up on the offer to go raccoon hunting. It is so much fun to listen the coon dogs bawling on the trail of their game. With Covid rising again it is a good time to spend more time in the Good Ole Outdoors of West Tennessee.
NO LANE CLOSURES FOR LABOR DAY HOLIDAY
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation will halt all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways for the Labor Day holiday travel period. Construction crews will stop all lane closure activity at noon on Friday, September 3rd, until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7th. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists traveling during the busy Labor Day holiday. “The Labor Day holiday is typically a busy travel time,” said TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright. “We want to ensure that the thousands of travelers using Tennessee’s roadways during this period arrive at their destinations quickly and safely without being impeded by road construction delays.” While lane closure activity will be stopped, workers will still be on-site in many construction zones, and drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits. Drivers convicted of speeding in work zones where workers are present face a fine of $250 to $500, plus court fees and possible increased insurance premiums. Get the latest construction activity and live streaming SmartWay traffic cameras from your desktop or mobile device at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic. Travelers can also dial 511 from any landline or cellular phone for travel information or follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/TN511 for statewide travel. GIBSON COUNTY MAN ARRESTED, CHARGED IN DOUBLE MURDER
August 30, 2021- MILAN – A joint investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, with the support of the United States Marshals Service Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force, has resulted in the arrest of a Milan man in connection with a double homicide. On August 23rd, at the request of 28th District Attorney General Frederick Agee, TBI special agents joined the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a double homicide at a home in the 100 block of Wilburn Nelson Road in Milan. The deceased individuals were identified as Diamond Love (DOB: 3/28/01), who resided at the address, and Marcus Smith Jr. (DOB: 5/16/00) of Humboldt. During the course of the investigation, agents and investigators developed information that identified Frederick Yates Jr. (DOB: 7/5/01) as the person responsible for the deaths and secured warrants for his arrest on two counts of First Degree Murder, two counts of Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Go Armed, and one count of Especially Aggravated Burglary. Today, Office, Yates was taken into custody in Ringgold, Georgia.
Cont’d from page 1 Court documents say while officers were detaining people, a woman identified as Miya Pugh, began yelling in the parking lot. Police say she was yelling that her wedding had been ruined because of the fighting. According to police, Pugh was visibly intoxicated and reportedly said she had been drinking because it was her wedding. Pugh is also said to have been lightheaded due to the heat and alcohol consumption. Court documents claim that Pugh “went from docile to combative,” and officers tried to take her into custody. Pugh reportedly bit one of the officers on the shoulder and caused “a minor abrasion.” Pugh has been charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and resisting official detention.

And Your Point is . . . WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
In August of 2020 I was substitute teaching in Gibson County Special School District. I have many fond memories of the relationships I built with students, faculty, and administration during the fall semester. My first assignment was subbing for the Spanish teacher at SGCHS. Fortunately, she was able to join the class via Microsoft teams and could see her students through the camera. I noticed several things from the students that helped me to understand how they felt about how the pandemic had affected them and their education. They had little issue with wearing masks and seemed somewhat relieved that they could once again roam familiar hallways and interact with friends and fellow classmates. They were concerned about the well being of their teacher and relieved that they had a “champion for education” in the classroom to ease their learning process. Some graduated last spring and they still ask me for encouragement and advice on their career prospects. Some are working, some are working and attending TCAT and some have gone on to community college or fouryear university. I am very proud to have played a small role in guiding their decisions. I feel that students had gained a better appreciation for the efforts their teacher’s put forth in the classrooms. They also appreciated a substitute that had their best interests at heart and made them feel capable, supported, able to achieve the pursuit of their dreams for the future.
Joining The Winning Team at JMCSS
I was scheduled to teach at SGCHS the week of Thanksgiving and the decision had been made to go to virtual until after the Thanksgiving holiday. I was not faculty so I did not get the e-mail and showed up only to be informed that they had to reschedule my assignment. I called the central office at JMCSS and met with Dr. Marlon King to discuss possibilities of joining him in building a winning team at JMCSS. I had gone through substitute orientation and had an ID from the spring semester of 2020. When I was approved, the schools all closed due to COVID. I was fortunate enough to have been assigned as a permanent sub to Liberty Tech HS in the spring of 2021. Quite the learning experience for me; but a successful one as I taught CTE among other various assignments. I must have done an acceptable job as I am assigned once again to Liberty Tech HS this fall. I am excited about the opportunity, as I feel that most of the students are like the students in Gibson County; they are glad to be back in the classrooms and reconnect with friends. I tell my students that you get out of education what you put into it. Prepare yourselves for success and take a step in that direction every day. I am confident that I have some future leaders in the community in my classrooms each day; I hope and pray that I can equip them with the tools they need to make their dreams become a reality. The high school diploma is just the beginning of more good things to come! “There will always be a lot of reasons why you can’t do something. NAACP, Black Leaders Demand Congress Act
Cont’s from page 3 By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia With voter suppression laws taking shape in Texas, Georgia, Arizona, and just about every GOP-led state in the nation, NAACP President Derrick Johnson is pleading for Democrats and the White House to show a sense of urgency. In a scathing op-ed, Johnson said, “we cannot out-organize voter suppression.” “We organized in November to put people in office to address the issue of voter suppression. We did not organize in November to let elected officials off the hook to organize again and overcome a new hurdle. Voters did their job as citizens, and now they’re simply asking elected officials to do their job to protect our right to vote,” Johnson remarked. Nearly six decades after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights activists led the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, that helped establish voting rights for millions of Black Americans, African American leaders will again descend on the nation’s capital to demand Congress protect the rights. Martin Luther King III, Yolanda King, Andrea Waters King, and others plan to march with more than 140 organizations and thousands of Americans on Saturday, August 28, to advocate for eliminating the Jim Crow filibuster and passing three critical voting rights bills – the For the People Act, John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Washington D.C. Admission Act. The mobilization comes just months after Black voters overcame significant barriers to the vote and organized their communities to change the course of the country — “and now ask that the White House and Congress do their part to protect our democracy and stand on the right side of history,” the leaders said in a news release. Martin Luther King III plans to appear this week on the National Newspaper Publishers Association live morning news program, “Let It Be Known,” to discuss the march and voting rights. In his op-ed, Johnson declared that “voting rights shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Yet the contentious dispute on whether to defend every American’s right to vote has taken center stage in Congress, and for an unnecessary amount of precious time.” He continued: “With time not on our side, there is no reason we should still be debating whether to pass a civil rights bill that will indubitably strengthen our fractured democracy by achieving the one goal our nation’s essence depends on – lending a voice to the people.” Johnson contradicted Republican Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who infamously and erroneously stated that, “it is easier for eligible Americans to vote than ever before in American history.” “State legislators around the country have introduced more than 400 bills that will make it more difficult for Americans to exercise their constitutional voting rights, and at least 18 states have passed such legislation,” Johnson wrote. “Ingrained in these attacks on voting rights are generations-long patterns of discrimination targeting communities of color, particularly Black communities. The overwhelming evidence of voter suppression speaks to this truth: It is easier for privileged, eligible Americans to vote than ever before in American history.” Any decision not in favor of significant voting legislation under consideration by Congress will cost the lives of millions of Americans whose very voices are jeopardized; Johnson insisted. “For instance, in May, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed legislation to ban curbside voting, consequentially forbidding poll workers to set up curbside voting centers and preventing voting machines from being stationed outside a polling place,” Johnson noted. “While many proponents argue that this restriction is rightfully erected to honor the integrity of our elections, this rationalization completely disregards the lack of accommodating resources for the elderly and people with disabilities – and the overall safety and wellness of voters who reside in a state where COVID-19 vaccinations are abysmal and infection rates are rising.” When signing the 1965 voting rights legislation, President Lyndon B. Johnson understood that the right to vote is an issue of human dignity, Johnson continued. 09-02-21 CSENEWS P.9

I’m so overjoyed by her kindness.” Ms. Opal Lee is an American retired teacher, counselor, and activist in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday. Jones — the founder of the Magic City Poetry Festival — has been named the next Poet Laureate for Alabama. Jones will be the first Black poet to serve as Poet Laureate and will also be the youngest person to hold the position, according to a news release at the festival website. The Poet Laureate of Alabama is a four-year term during which the selected poet serves as an ambassador of poetry for the state. The position was created in 1930. Jones was chosen for the role on Aug. 22 during the annual conference of the Alabama Writers Cooperative. “When I was a little girl growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, I made a plan for my life as a poet, and part of that plan — a big, big dream — was to serve as Alabama State Poet Laureate,” Jones said in a statement. “I’m so honored to serve my home state as an ambassador, advocate, and as a lover of poetry and all the people who write it, read it, and find new magic from it in this life.” Her duties as poet laurate will include appearances at Alabama schools, universities, libraries and other institutions, as well lectures, poetry readings and workshops both locally and nationally.

JACKSON – A two-day joint undercover operation by special agents with the TBI Human Trafficking Unit and Human Trafficking Task Force and the Jackson Police Department, in conjunction with Operation United Front, a 12-state human trafficking operation led by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, has resulted in the arrest of 11 men accused of seeking illicit sex from minors. This operation was worked in conjunction with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Metro Narcotics Unit, the Department of Homeland Security – Homeland Security Investigations, and the Office of 26th District Attorney General Jody Pickens. Several Conservative Anti-Vaxxers Die of COVID as Delta Variant Spreads
NNPA NEWSWIRE —On August 20, South Carolina tea party Republican leader Pressley Stutts died from complications of COVID. He was 64. Stutts opposed mask mandates but stated on social media that Covid-19 was a serious and deadly disease. Days before his death Stutts wrote on social media that he was choosing to go on a ventilator to take “a short rest.” August 31, 2021By Lauren Victoria Burke Several conservatives have died of complications of COVID as the Delta variant rages through the southern part of the U.S. Many of them have publicly downplayed the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic and have opposed mask mandate laws in the U.S. On August 28, Texas anti-mask organizer Caleb Wallace died after being infected with the COVID virus and re-
maining in the hospital since July 30. Wallace, 30, organized a “Freedom Rally” in early July for those “sick of the government being in control of our lives.” Wallace was a founder of the San Angelo Freedom Defenders. On August 14, longtime conservative radio host Dick Farrel, 65, who was based in Palm Beach and a skeptic of the seriousness of the coronavirus, died. Farrel refused to get the COVID vaccine. During his show on July 2, Farrel described the Delta variant as “another avalanche of Footchi
bull shif.” Farrel was referring to medical guidance by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden. On August 21, another conservative COVID skeptic, radio host Phil Valentine, died. In late July Valentine’s radio station, 99.7 WTN in Nashville, announced that Valentine was hospitalized and “in very serious condition, suffering from Covid pneumonia.”
