Pastor Autura Eason-Williams
Second 15-year-old charged with death of Memphis pastor Posted: Jul 25, 2022 by: Morgan Mitchell, Destinee Hannah (wreg.com) UPDATE:
The District Attorney’s Office is seeking to have the second 15-year-old suspect tried as an adult in Eason-Williams’ death, according to Shelby County DA Amy Weirich (right). “Because of the facts, the serious nature of this case and this offender’s criminal history, I am seeking transfer of this case to adult court as well,” Weirich said. Police located pastor Autura Eason-Williams suffering from gunshot wounds outside of her Whitehaven home after a carjacking last Monday. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. Last week, two other teens were also charged after leading Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase hours after the killing.

THE HEAT IS ON
West Tennessee Hot has taken on a new meaning around OUTDOORS the world including West Tennessee. The with Ray Jones sizzling heat has forced many to change the Send photos to: activities normally engaged in this time of numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 the year. However, as hot as it is it’s not the hottest year on record yet because the summer of 2021 holds that distinction. The record hottest day in Tennessee belongs to Perryville in 1930 with a temperature of 113 degrees. But because it has been sustained for long periods of time without rain it has taken a toll on farmers with many loosing their crops this year. Not only are farmers struggling but backyard gardens and lawns have taken a hit as well. Summer camps were forced to cut back and limit outdoor activities for safety precautions. The dangerous heat has been hard on summer league baseball practices and even forced football teams to change the hours of operation. The good news is that fish are still biting for those who can brave the extreme heat or get an early start to the day. Even with the 100 degree days early mornings are still fairly cool in in the bottoms of the Hatchie Wildlife Refuge.

Tell Congress: Co-Sponsor the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act and Keep Families Connected! Tell Congress: Co-Sponsor the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act and Keep Families Connected! Incarcerated people and their loved ones deserve to stay connected. Period.
While tens of millions of people reconnect with loved ones after spending so much time apart during the COVID-19 pandemic, incarcerated people around the country still can’t see family and friends because of prison restrictions on in-person visits. That leaves phone and video calls as the easiest way families can stay in touch with incarcerated loved ones. But prison telecom corporations like Securus, owned by Aventiv Technologies, and ViaPath Technologies (formerly GTL) charge families as much as $1 a minute for a phone call. That kind of price gouging creates a huge financial burden during normal times, but the pandemic exacerbated the impact. Families who want to stay in touch but can’t make in-person visits have few other options. Preying on vulnerable families through hiked-up telephone and video calls generates $1.4 billion a year for telecom companies, but they’re not alone. More than 4,000 corporations across industries that do business with prisons are raking in billions of dollars each year. That kind of profiteering hurts Black and low-income families the most. This ruthlessness cannot continue. It’s unconscionable that one in three families go into debt just to talk with their loved ones behind bars. Most families in that situation already face financial hardships, and having to pay substantially for phone calls can make a bad situation even worse. We can stop this. In April 2021, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Illinois) sponsored the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act, legislation that would give the Federal Communications Commission the power to stop telecom companies from taking advantage of incarcerated people and their families. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a version of the bill in 2020, but it never made it to the Senate floor. Now is the chance to make it happen. Add your name: Demand your member of Congress co-sponsor the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act.
Martha Wright-Reed was a champion for phone justice and fought for decades to make prison phone calls affordable for incarcerated people. Let’s keep her hope alive by demanding that Congress pass the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act now! Tell your representative to support the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act and co-sponsor the legislation. Your voice is crucial in the fight to keep families connected.
200 years in the making
By Kathy Moore Mon, Jul 25, 8:55 AM In June we celebrated Juneteenth (freedom day) then 200 years of Jackson! We have a lot to thank God for Jackson. We have a very important election coming up. 25 years of believing in our Candidates Campaigning for my favorite Candidate gave me hope that we will focus on our children by offering them something so big, so exciting that they would want to be a part of. I know Ms. Shelia Godwin and Ms. Doris Black understand there’s home, the streets, then school. We need more help in the streets. BeReal4Ever is a community service nonprofit 501c3 program that targets our problems in our streets so please Vote!! Today is my nephew’s birthday- July 25th- he would be 44 years old but these streets killed him in 1996. It’s been a long road but its necessary, so please Vote. Happy birthday Sherick Moore we love you forever.

Superintendent Dr. Marlon King Shares Achievements at Rotary Meeting
By Downtown Ricky Brown Jackson Madison County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marlon King shared achievements with local leadership recently at a meeting with the Jackson Rotary Club. Dr. King shared that the next steps are to continue improvements the system has made. King said; “after the pandemic caused a decline in reading scores for students, we then decided to bring students back in person and the numbers started to increase. The improvements that we made, from 19 to 23%, which we did better this year than we did before the pandemic. That is bringing kids back to school,” said King. He says moving forward into the future for JMCSS, they want to make sure that a student’s family is a part of their education as well. “We will work with our families to engage them more around what support systems and things you can do to support your child. What we want to do is continue to make progress,” said King. Dr King and School Board Chairman, James ‘Pete’ Johnson also discussed the importance of school safety. Both the Jackson Police and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office say they have been working closely with the school district to make sure plans are in place to keep students and staff safe. Chairman Johnson said; “safety is the number one priority. Partnering with local law enforcement and the county commission is also supporting us with more funds to have in place plans to protect our kids and our employees,” said Johnson. “We are continuing to be competitive salary wise and we to continue to move the needle,” added Johnson. “We need attract new teachers and we need the experienced teachers to continue in our system.” King said “we plan to continue to strive for education excellence in the future.”
