The Power of God Dear Editor:

LovinNewsWEEKLY

p.03 “The Peace of Christ Be With You” Pass the Peace, Please

LETTER TO EDITOR

WE EXTEND TO YOU A MOST WARM AND HEARTY WELCOME. MT. TABOR IS A CHURCH WHERE YOU BELONG!

The power of God is easily seen in His creation every where we look. It is in ourselves and all around us. His spirit is in every one of us who are alive. We are the product of the Great Designer and Creator, God. The Triad God said, “let us make man in our image” and “our likeness,” and he did. Cumberland We know because He told us so in the Word of God, the Holy Bible. And He said his Word will endure forever! Regardless of Man turning science, into science fiction, as they concoct ideas about the earth and Presbyterian Church universe creation, by their billions-of-years God. Or the late Stephen Hawking’s idea that it was by the 1798 CAMPBELL STREET, JACKSON, TN law of gravity. Others have said life started from bacteria. (731) 427-6181 Mankind tries all kinds of ways to deny God his glory. SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 AM REV. DR. R. But the Holy Bible contains thousands of witnessed events where God displayed His Almighty power. On STANLEY WOOD SUNDAY WORSHIP 10:45 AM the first six days of creation, only God, his word, and the Holy Ghost were present. At that time God PASTOR spoke the never-ending Heaven into existence, and the Earth also. The huge earth was void of life but was full of all the minerals and elements and was fully covered by water. On one of the six days God Almighty created the sun, the moon, and billions of stars, and strategically placed them in the universe. But as easily as He placed them there thousands of years ago, at the end of time, at God’s command, they will “pass away.” God will then create a new Heaven and Earth. Then from Heaven, God will lower to the new Earth, “that great city, the holy Jerusalem.” The dimensions of that great walled city 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles wide, and 1,500 miles high. “And the foundations of the wall of the city, garnished with all manner of precious stones.” With a street of gold and the presence of God and Jesus Christ for light. UT MARTIN NURSING CLASS ACHIEVES 100 PERCENT NCLEX PASS RATE MARTIN, Tenn. – One hundred percent of nursing graduates from the University of Tennessee at Martin’s 2018 class passed their National Council Licensing Examinations this year as first-time testtakers. The NCLEX is a mandatory examination to receive licensure as a registered nurse, and this total includes students from both the UT Martin main campus and the Parsons Center. “The faculty at UT Martin value the current and future success of our students. We are committed to ensuring that our graduates are prepared for the NCLEX and their careers in the profession,” said Dr. Mary Radford, associate professor of nursing and department chair. “Our curriculum is challenging yet preparatory for both the NCLEX and clinical practice, and our signature three years of clinical rotations play a key role in students’ preparation.” UT Martin has educated nurses for more than 45 years, and program graduates hold many positions in the health-care field to make a difference in the lives of their patients. Students who leave UT Martin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree complete more than 900 clinical hours in hospitals and health-care facilities across the state and gain experience in surgical, intensive care, maternity, pediatric, geriatric, mental health and emergency units, among others. Classes are also provided on topics such as leadership skills and community-based nursing in addition to clinical learning opportunities. “I think no matter where you attend school, the NCLEX is nerve-wracking. However, UTM prepared me more than I ever expected. We have a 100 percent NCLEX pass rate for a reason,” said Brittany Benjamin, a 2018 graduate from South Fulton. “Although I was nervous, I was confident after I left (the exam). … It’s all because UT Martin sets their standards high, and we all excel because of it.” Benjamin has secured a position in the orthopedic trauma unit at Vanderbilt University and says interviewers were impressed by her academic resume. “It goes to show how amazing our program is and how well known we are to employers. They know this program prepares us for life after graduation. Out of the largest selection of applicants at Vanderbilt, I landed my dream job, and I do believe that graduating from such a rigorous program is what helped separate me from other (applicants),” she said. Students can earn a UT Martin nursing degree on the main campus in Martin and at the UT Martin Parsons Center. The RN-BSN bridge program for currently licensed nurses is available online. For more information on the UT Martin Department of Nursing, contact the department directly at 731-881-7080 or email nursing@utm.edu.

UT MARTIN RECEIVES VETERAN RECONNECT GRANT

Friday, August 10, 2018

LOVINEDUCATION

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin is one of 14 institutions statewide to receive a 2018 Veteran Reconnect Grant from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. THEC awarded a total of $889,277 through the grant program this year, and UT Martin received $78,570. UT Martin students (l-r) Zach Barker, Melissa Walker, Tyler Shaw According to a THEC and Bo Pate are all members of the Tennessee Army National press release, the 2018 Guard. grants are focused on improving prior learning assessments for student veterans returning to college. This assessment process examines a veteran’s military training and grants equivalent college credit for skills obtained during service, potentially allowing student veterans to complete their degrees in a shorter period of time. Selected institutions are responsible for developing and improving evaluation processes while ensuring this information is readily accessible to both prospective and incoming student veterans. “Earning college credit for military training can be the difference between a student applying to a school or moving on to the next opportunity,” said Mike Krause, THEC executive director. “When a veteran is able to use credit for their military training toward their college degree, they are more likely to persist and finish their program of study.” UT Martin hosted a workshop Aug. 9 to help faculty better understand the process of awarding college credit for skills obtained during military service. Representatives from THEC and the American Council of Education asked faculty representatives to evaluate a list of military occupational specialties and determine equivalent course credits available at UT Martin. This information, along with credits granted by other institutions, will be available online in the future. The Veteran Reconnect Grant Program is part of Gov. Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 initiative to increase the number of Tennessee adults with postsecondary degrees or certificates to 55 percent by the year 2025. “Many veterans in Tennessee put their education on hold to serve our nation in the armed forces and, as a state, we have an obligation to support them in completing their education,” said Haslam. “Through the Drive to 55, we can connect veterans with the postsecondary credentials that will help them further stand out in the workforce. Veteran Reconnect is one more way that Tennessee is investing in veterans and their future.” Other institutions receiving grants this year are Bethel University; East Tennessee State University; Lane College; Middle Tennessee State University; Nashville State Community College; Northeast State Community College; Roane State Community College; Tennessee State University; Tusculum University; the University of Memphis; the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and Walters State Community College. JACKSON, Tenn. – Jackson-Madison County teaching veteran Tiffani Harris has been selected for an important role in the future of the state’s standardized test known as TNReady. She and just 36 other educators, selected from more than 900 applicants from across Tennessee, have been chosen as the first-ever TNReady Ambassadors. They are tasked with serving as advisers, providing on-the-ground perspective and feedback during the 2018-2019 school year. “I feel honored to have been chosen from so many applicants,” she admitted. “I know there were so many qualified applicants who deserve this opportunity as well.” Harris, who has been an educator for 18 years, currently serves as consulting teacher at Liberty Technology Magnet High School. “I hope to gain a better understanding of the TNReady mathematics assessment design,” Harris explained. “I believe it is a great opportunity to gain more insight from the state’s angle.” With a background as a math teacher, Harris has also served as an assistant principal at Liberty and Jackson Central-Merry High School and worked as Math Supervisor for the District. “My primary responsibility as an ambassador is to serve as a math content expert for other math teachers,” Harris explained. She said that will include participating in item reviews, field testing TNReady versions, providing feedback on test directions and scripts, and conducting content review focused on alignment of test questions to Tennessee standards. “I will also observe human scoring and review test blueprints,” she added. The Jackson native and South Side High School alumna expects her year-long assignment to be quite the commitment, but one she is looking forward to. “I expect hours after school per week and hours on the weekend,” she said. “But since the work is very similar to what I currently do, I don’t feel like the position is ‘work’ as much as it will help me in my current role.” All ambassadors will receive stipends from the state for their work. Harris holds a Bachelor’s from the University of Tennessee at Martin and earned her Master’s and Education Specialist from Freed-Hardeman University. She and her husband, Vincent, have a 3-year-old daughter, Karter. The TNReady Ambassadors will meet as a group in Nashville in September. However, Harris said they have already received a calendar of expectations through their year of service, which ends in July of 2019. The ambassador program is just one of several adjustments that have been made by the Tennessee Department of Education to better ensure that students can take the TNReady without disruption. They include the hiring of a new Executive Director of Assessment Logistics and a TNReady Customer Service Specialist.

AUTHOR’S OVIN EALTH NEW MEMOIR, “EMOTIONS OF THE MIND: BREAKING THE CYCLE,” COMPELS READERS TO RECOGNIZE, REVEAL AND RESOLVE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT ARE OFTEN IGNORED

L

H

Detroit, MI — Author Tamela C. Todd will release her memoir, Emotions of The Mind: Breaking the Cycle, during Mental Health Awareness week, October 7-13. Todd will reveal her poignant story at her book launch, Saturday, October 13, 2018 3-6 p.m. at the House of Pure Vin, located at 1433 Woodward Detroit, MI 48226. Emotions of The Mind will compel readers to recognize, reveal and resolve mental health issues that are often ignored. Todd, who is a literacy and mental health advocate, aims to shift the narrative about mental health. “I know my past has encouraged and empowered me, but reading helped me see things differently and it opened my eyes to a lot of thing that were dysfunctional,” says Todd. “My goal is to help others see a difference and let people know it’s okay to discuss mental stigmas and ask for help. We are responsible for what’s going on with us mentally because we’re the only ones that know the truth. It is our responsibility to deal with our pain, trauma and illness. We have to take that first step to make that change. I know this is going to be powerful and help someone else that’s going through all the stuff I went through.” Emotions of The Mind serves as a guide on how to thrive despite trauma. Readers will gain insight on how they can help family and friends who suffer with mental health issues. The transparency of Todd’s journey will inspire readers to evaluate their own mental health and emotional intelligence. It will also empower readers and raise awareness about the impact of mental and emotional health. Following the Q&A and book discussion, a raffle will occur. Four attendees will win a bottle of wine or a wine accessory. Emotions of The Mind is available now for preorder at TamelaTodd.com. After its release, the book will be available on TamelaTodd.com, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Follow Tamela C. Todd on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter for updates.

Book Launch Schedule: Saturday, October 13, 2018 Meet and Greet: 3-3:30 p.m. Q&A/Book Discussion 3:30-4:00 p.m. Raffle: 4:00-4:30 p.m. Book Signing: 4:30-6 p.m. About Tamela C. ToddTamela Todd uses the transitions in her life to write her story of perseverance and evolution. After surviving a home where her father’s schizophrenia fostered chaos, she mimicked that dysfunction in her first marriage. She endured the same emotional and mental abuse from her childhood, until her love for reading inspirational books sparked an epiphany. She realized the value in her purpose. She aims to shun the stigmas of mental health and raise awareness that will empower others to share their stories. Her 20 years in the healthcare field has deepened her insight into the effects of physical, emotional and mental trauma. As the founder and executive director of Brown Girls Read Book Club, her passion for literacy shapes future leaders. She believes literacy gives us the ability to initiate and participate in discussions, debates, and decisions related to individuals and our community. Todd has been featured on several media outlets including WDIV Channel 4, Detroit’s Hot 107.5 with Koffey Brown, Michigan Chronicle, Metro Parent, Rolling Out magazine, Motor City Woman Radio, Lady Blogger and Black Pearls Literary Magazine.

Habits of People Who Never Get Tired And How You Can Be One Too! We all know that person who seems to use the 24 hours in a day to the max. While people have varying levels of energy for many reasons, why do some seem to have more than others? There are several factors that can come into play, but often those who seem to have an abundance of vigor have a daily routine of established habits that contribute to their daily drive. The health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, are pleased to share five tips that will help you seize each day and live it to its fullest. 1. Stop Snoozing. You might think a couple more minutes of shuteye will make you less tired, but hitting the snooze button can actually make you more groggy and tired than if you had woken up on time. To break out of your “five more minutes” habit, plan the night before to perform one action in the morning. Take the dog out, walk around the neighborhood or do a load of laundry. Whatever it is, hold yourself accountable and turn your first task of the day into an accomplishment. You’ll feel more motivated to get up and knock one item off the checklist. For that extra push, place your alarm on the other side of the bedroom so it forces you to get out of bed and turn it off. 2. Begin with Breakfast. We’ve all heard it’s the most important meal of the day, but sometimes it can be hard to make breakfast healthy. Start your day with food choices that include a variety of nutrients and minerals like lean protein and fruits or vegetables. Nutritious meals help you feel more alert throughout the day. For a high-protein, energy-boosting breakfast option, toast a whole grain English muffin and top it with an egg, slices of avocado and diced tomatoes. For a high-fiber and protein dish, buy to-go packs of plain low-fat Greek yogurt and add chia seeds along with your favorite chopped fruits like strawberries or blueberries. 3. Face Friends. We tend to get sucked into technology and forget about the benefits of engaging in person with friends, co-workers or even the neighborhood coffee shop owner. If you’re in an office behind a computer screen for most of your day, instead of sending an instant message, get up and go speak to your co-workers in person. It’ll get your blood flowing and give you an energy boost to get through the rest of your day. Better yet, grab someone and take a stroll around the office building or walk to pick up lunch. Studies have shown that social contact has been linked to improved moods and increased productivity. 4. Curb Caffeine. A cup of coffee in the morning is ok but try to limit yourself to one caffeinated drink per day to ward off the need for continually increasing your intake. People who are naturally energized don’t rely on stimulants. If you’re running on fumes and need an afternoon jolt, go for green tea. United States Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) offers the below oped for publication. His commentary first appeared in the Washington Examiner, then the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

TIMES FREE PRESS: SENATE’S ‘INNOCENT UNTIL NOMINATED’ HABIT Oped by: Senator Lamar Alexander August 5, 2018 https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/opinion/columns/ story/2018/aug/05/alexander-senates-innocent-untilnominated-ha/476242/

THE UNITED STATES SENATE HAS DEVELOPED A BAD HABIT OF TREATING PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEES AS

“INNOCENT

UNTIL NOMINATED.” I hope to see better behavior when hearings begin on President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Instead of treating Judge Kavanaugh as someone recently released from San Quentin, the Senate Judiciary Committee should conduct its hearing with dignity and respect so that Americans can better understand Judge Kavanaugh’s temperament, intelligence and character. The current rudeness is a recent phenomenon. Historically, senators have recognized that bipartisan approval of qualified nominees helps to increase the Court’s esteem, confirm its impartiality and strengthen it as an institution. Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia was confirmed unanimously. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, likely the most liberal current justice, was confirmed 96-3. More recently, half the Democrat senators voted to confirm President Bush’s nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts. In 2014, I voted to confirm President Obama’s nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, not because I agreed with her, but because she was qualified. Some senators insist that Judge Kavanaugh knows how he would decide a case. This reminds me of Sen. Howard Baker’s story of the mountain judge who told lawyers, “Just give me a little on the law, boys. I had a telephone call last night, and I pretty well know the facts.” Judges aren’t supposed to decide cases in advance — that’s why we have judges, to create an impartial system of justice. Justice Ginsburg said during her confirmation process that she would give “no hints, no forecasts, no previews” of what her legal views would be once confirmed. This is now known as the Ginsburg Rule: Justices are supposed to follow the law and decide cases when the case is presented, not before justices are confirmed. And, of course, justices’ decisions can be surprising. For example, Justice Scalia once ruled that a government ban on flag-burning violated the First Amendment. Scalia also once said: “The judge who always likes the results he reaches is a bad judge.” In 2006, I voted for Judge Kavanaugh when President George W. Bush nominated him to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Earlier this month, I attended President Trump’s nomination of Judge Kavanaugh at the White House; you have only one chance to make a good first impression, and Judge Kavanaugh took full advantage of his. I was impressed again last week when I visited with the judge in my Senate office. We discussed federalism, how to strengthen the court as an institution and other matters, but never once did I ask, nor did he hint, how he might rule in a case. I will not announce how I will vote until the hearing is completed. Some Democrat senators already have announced their opposition to Kavanaugh. Why have a hearing and why demand to review more of his writings if you’ve already decided how to vote? During my eight years as governor, I appointed about 50 judges. In doing so, I looked for the same qualities I will look for now as the Senate considers Judge Kavanaugh: intelligence, character, temperament, respect for the law and respect for those who come before the court. I did not ask one applicant how he or she would rule on abortion or immigration or taxation. Political party membership was far down my list of considerations. I hope that the Senate will return to the practice of inquiring diligently into the qualifications of a nominee instead of treating him as “innocent until nominated.”
