SCOTT CONGER ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR CITY OF JACKSON MAYOR
“We can build our future together and create a better Jackson, not only for today. But, for years to come, “ said Conger. “We have to have leadership that can make the tough decisions, ask the tough questions, and will refuse to accept the answer, ‘This is the way we’ve always done it.’ The only way we can build Jackson into the city it can be is by creating an inclusive government, casting a shared vision, and fostering an environment for people to pursue their dreams.”

“If Jesus came with me to school, I would respect him and everyone else, too. I would not hit, would not call people names, and I would not or push,” says Michael, age 6. We have a tendency to act one way around some people and put our best foot forward around others. Jesus said, “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40) Oops! We live in a time when God indwells his people. Living in light of this kingdom reality should elevate relationships with Christians to a different sphere. It should also have a sobering effect on the way Christians treat non-Christians. God created all people in his image, even atheists. We should be courteous and show respect to all, especially to those with whom we disagree. “I would tell Jesus about my life and what’s hard for me at home and at school,” says Joe, 9. “I would be very excited if he was here with me. I would feel like there could be no reason to fear him at all because it would be so good with him. “It would be a dream come true. ‘Thank you, Lord. Thank you,’ I would say. I would travel around the world telling others about Jesus and make more Christians in the world. That would be great!” Thank you, Joe, for sharing your unbridled joy in the Lord. God wants all his children to live free in anticipation of seeing him. True confidence in life comes from being rightly related to God. Living apart from God breeds fear because we’re limited to our own resources. Jesus appeared to scared disciples on Easter morning in a resurrection body and said, “Peace to you.” The Scripture records, “But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.” (Luke 24:37) When Jesus challenged them to examine his body and opened their understanding of the Old Testament concerning himself, faith began to replace fear. When Christians live by faith, they stop worrying about what people think about them and start telling others about Jesus. The Apostle John wrote, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment.” (I John 4:18) “If Jesus came to school with me, I would let him sit next to me,” says Kelly, 9. “I would listen to him to see if he had an idea to grow closer to God. When the time would come to say goodbye, I would pray he would come back again. When I would come home, I would hope to see him just sitting there on my bed waiting just for me.” Kelly, thanks for this wonderful image of Jesus sitting on your bed waiting for you to come home from school. It brings to mind someone who sat on Easter morning. After an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone of Jesus’ tomb, the Scripture records that he sat on it. (Matthew 28:2) Because an angel sat on a stone and announced Jesus’ resurrection, we can sit, stand and walk with him wherever he leads us. Think about this: If you’re a Christian, Jesus is in you and with you wherever you go. Memorize this truth: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) Ask this question: Do you have a sense of God’s presence at school, work, home or wherever you go?

MARTIN, Tenn. – Transfer students from any institution can now use the University of Tennessee at Martin’s transfer equivalency self-service feature to determine how earned college credits will apply toward any UT Martin degree program. “We know the first question transfer students ask when looking at colleges and universities is related to how their coursework will transfer into a new degree program. SCOTT CONGER The Tennessee Star: Sen. LOVINPOLITICALNEWS ANNOUNCES Lamar Alexander CANDIDACY FOR CITY Commentary: GOP Accomplishments August 2, 2018 OF JACKSON MAYOR http://tennesseestar.com/2018/08/02/sen-lamar-alexander-commentary-gop-accomplishments/
When I travel across Tennessee some people say, “I sure am glad I don’t have your job.” My answer is always, “I’m also glad you don’t have my job because I like my job, and I thank you for it.” And then someone will say, “Why don’t you guys ever do anything? What difference does a Republican majority make?” My answer is to hand them my Republican accomplishments card – a scorecard that lists what President Trump and a Republican Congress have been able to accomplish in the last 18 months. Best economy in 18 years, the biggest tax reform in 31 years, military support is the strongest it has been in 15 years, numerous regulations have been repealed, one confirmed Supreme Court justice and another Supreme Court nominee, 23 conservative U.S. Circuit Court judges confirmed, opened up Alaska to energy development after 38 years. We have a new National Labor Relations Board. We repealed Obamacare’s individual mandate penalty, repealed DoddFrank mortgage rules, passed legislation to improve veterans’ health care, and passed sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea. All of this in the last 18 months – the most important accomplishments by a conservative government in thirty years, and none would have happened without both a Republican president and a Republican Congress. And the person who asked me the question will almost always say, “Oh, I didn’t know that.” Whether I’m traveling around Tennessee or walking to a vote in Washington, I like to carry around this card as a reminder of what we’ve been able to accomplish. Not long ago, I gave it to President Trump, and as you might expect, he liked it. Our accomplishments have made a profound and meaningful impact in the lives of Tennesseans. Nationwide, workers are in the middle of a booming economy. This has proven life-changing for Tennesseans who struggled to find work and provide for their families. As a result of the new tax law, Tennesseans will be keeping more of the money they earn in their pockets. For example, a family of four in Dickson making a little over $70,000 a year should save more than $2,000 on their taxes, and a single mother making $41,000 a year should see a $1,300, or 73 percent, reduction in her taxes. Parents should receive a tax credit worth up to $2,000 per child – and you could receive as much as $1,400 of the child tax credit as a refund. More than 450,000 Tennessee families claimed the child tax credit in 2015 so that means for these families we’ve doubled the amount they can deduct from their taxes for each child. Businesses in Tennessee are also able to do more for their employees. FedEx announced more than $200 million in pay raises, First Tennessee gave its employees a $1,000 bonus, and Wal-Mart increased its starting wage and provided a $1,000 bonus to eligible employees. The tax reform legislation also repealed the Obamacare individual mandate penalty, which was an especially cruel tax on thousands of lower-income Tennesseans. Congress provided $700 billion for the military this fiscal year, the largest increase in 15 years, which included pay raises for our troops at Fort Campbell as well as resources and equipment for our servicemen and women who put their lives on the line day after day to preserve our freedom. We’re also better fulfilling our duty to those service members when they return home. Tennessee veterans will have access to more health care options closer to home as a result of the Veterans Choice program and the VA MISSION Act, which the president signed into law this year. Congress has repealed more than a dozen Obama-era regulations that were a big, wet Washington blanket on job creators and our local communities. A new law providing relief from the Democrats’ Dodd-Frank law will help Tennessee bankers and credit unions who have been overregulated for too many years and allow more Tennesseans to seek help from their local financial institutions in buying a home or investing in a small business. For all of these reasons, it is important to continue our Republican majority in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Perhaps you can see why I’m grateful for my job and why I don’t have any trouble answering the question, “What difference does a Republican majority make?” Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) has served in the US Senate since 2003. Prior to his election to the Senate, Alexander served as the Governor of Tennessee from 1979 – 1987.
Jackson, Tenn. — Former city councilman, Scott Conger, is running for mayor of the city of Jackson in 2019. “I’m running for mayor, because we can’t be satisfied with the status quo,” said Conger. “We have to bring more people to the table, so we can work towards a shared vision of what our great city will look like for future generations. Because if there’s one thing you can’t do, it’s that you can’t box Jackson, Tennessee into a stereotype or into one subset of people. That’s what makes us great. But we have to be willing to innovate and listen to new ideas. We can’t be threatened by differences of opinion; great people welcome diverse viewpoints.” “I see a Jackson where people feel included in the decision-making process, and have an understanding of how their government works for them — A government that we all play a role in shaping the future of our city,” said Conger. “I see a Jackson where leaders put aside political differences and party affiliations to do what’s best for the whole.” Conger has been an advocate for transparency in government and has launched several initiatives to make sure that local officials are hearing the voices of their constituents. During his weekly video blogs on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter & InstagramConger discusses issues that impact the community and encourages people to be aware and involved. In addition, he hosts a virtual town hall on social media to discuss the city council’s agenda. This gives people an opportunity to engage in local issues by using a familiar forum. During his time on city council, Conger worked to approve legislation to affect the municipal government including passing a fiscally responsible annual budget. He directly assisted constituents in any and all needs pertaining to the City of Jackson. Conger implemented summer youth initiatives that including a mentoring program and summer jobs program. He was also part of the initiative to bring the first public dog park to Jackson. He assisted in the economic development of the city by providing a business-friendly environment and worked with existing business expansions. Finally, he analyzed and listened to concerns about the overall wellbeing of the city to determine the best action steps for continued improvement. Conger is currently the president & CEO of United Way of West Tennessee. He has also served as the donor management director at West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation and the director of loan management at Lane College. Not only has his professional career been devoted to community service, he is a relentless public servant for Jackson. He has served as a board member for the Jackson Chamber, Jackson Downtown Development Corporation, Area Relief Ministries, The Jabari Greer Campaign for Fatherhood, Municipal Solid Waste Regional CONTINUED ON P.9

The #BLUEBACKINGPINK movement began at the Jackson Police Department last year by the sale of t-shirts across the state and continued this year starting with the design of this vehicle. The vehicle scheme was made possible by a generous donation from the Tennessee Window Tint Company. The vehicle will be on display in front of the department and we encourage everyone to stop and see the car. The vehicle will also be turning up at local breast cancer awareness functions. We are doing whatever we can to draw awareness to this disease and having a pink scheme police car will get everyone’s attention. While people stare at the car, hopefully they will understand the message the car is designed to send.

New Book: ‘Earth’s Last Empire’ RIPPED FROM TOMORROW’S HEADLINES BY NYT BESTSELLER JOHN HAGEE Coming September 18, What the Bible Tells Us About Today’s Turbulent Political Landscape and What That Means for the Future of the World JHM.org SAN ANTONIO – It’s a story ripped from today’s—and tomorrow’s—headlines. The Middle East on the brink of conflict. Russia now in the Middle East. A federation of European nations. From New York Times best-selling author John Hagee comes Earth’s Last Empire: The Final Game of Thrones, a can’t-put-down book that brings the Bible to vivid life as it reveals God’s hand in human history—and His plans for the future. “Although we live in the Information Age, we’re the most uninformed generation in history regarding God’s plan for the future,” Hagee said. “When almost one-fourth of the Bible was prophetic at the time it was written, it certainly benefits us to study it.” With nearly 40 books to his credit, including several New York Times best-sellers, Hagee states, “Everything I’ve written in the past has led to this culmination of truth from the prophetic scriptures in Earth’s Last Empire.” Drawing on his decades of studying and preaching God’s Word, meticulous scholarly research and a flair for communicating truth in a compelling, readable style, Hagee’s Earth’s Last Empire explores: • The central importance of Jerusalem in world history, our present and our future. • How human empires over the centuries have led to where we are today . . . and how that affects every person on earth • A “Bible snapshot” of prophecy in scriptures and how it plays out today . . . and tomorrow. Drawing biblical insight and wisdom from Genesis to Revelation—Earth’s Last Empire puts today’s stormy political landscape in context. And it looks ahead to where today’s events— particularly in the Middle East—might be leading. And, finally, Earth’s Last Empire brings readers to a place of hope, showing God’s hand on nations and individuals throughout history and a promised future where there will be a world of perfect peace. From Worthy Publishing, Earth’s Last Empire is available online for pre-order now and for sale in stores and online September 18, 2018. John Hagee is the author of multiple best-selling books, which have been enjoyed by millions of readers, including his most recent best-sellers, Four Blood Moons and The Three Heavens.
