Former assistant DA pleads guilty to federal charge
by: David Royer Posted: Feb 24, 2022 -wreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former assistant district attorney in Memphis admitted her role in illegally providing a local attorney with traffic accident reports, United States Attorney Joseph C. Murphy, Jr. announced in a release.
Glenda Adams, 49, pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy to violate the federal statute known as the Travel Act.
between February 2017 and October 2020, Adams was an Assistant District Attorney employed by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office in Memphis. During that time, a local attorney paid Adams to provide him with law enforcement restricted information contained in traffic accident reports. Those traffic reports are kept in a database and there is a charge to the public for accessing them. Former Shelby County assistant district attorney, several former MPD employees indicted in TBI investigation Adams had access to the system and would provide records to the attorney in exchange for cash, prosecutors said. The attorney used the records to solicit accident victims and offer them legal representation. Adams was fired from the district attorney’s office in 2020. A year-long investigation led to her indictment, along with three former Memphis Police Department employees, a Memphis attorney and four other people. Adams faces up to five years in federal prison. Her sentencing is set for May 27.

PRESIDENT BIDEN NOMINATES FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO SUPREME COURT
President Joe Biden has introduced and nominated federal Appeals Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to the United States Supreme Court. In the President’s selection, Biden delivered on a campaign promise, moving to further diversify a court that was made up entirely of white men for almost two centuries. The President said; “I believe it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation.” The President praised her as having a “pragmatic understanding that the law must work for the American people.” Jackson is an attorney who possesses the type of elite legal background found in other high court justices, but who’s worked as a public defender. If confirmed she will fill the seat on the nine member court that will be vacated by liberal Justice Stephen Breyer. So the ideological balance of the 6-3 majority court won’t change.
Sheriff’s Calendar Program Distribution
DTRB is always busy helping worthy organizations with their community services. The Madison County Deputy Sheriff’s Association sponsors an annual “Sheriff’s calendar” in efforts to support worthwhile causes. With the Sheriff’s approval, Brown distributes the calendar to businesses throughout the area including 5 Points Grocery Store in the Pinson area. Brown said; “I’ve volunteered to help Law Enforcement agencies since I was a teenager in worthwhile projects. Our own McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser, Chester County Sheriff Eric Bell and Hardeman County Sheriff Delphus Hicks were instrumental in supporting then called “Tennessee Sheriffs Youth Town in Pinson. Many may remember Buford Pusser highlighting this in two of the Walking Tall movies. Much of the proceeds of the calendar program are used to support Youth Town,” said Brown. “I’m honored each year to volunteer and support our Deputy Sheriff’s of Madison County and West Tennessee. Brown with the support of former McNairy County Sheriff James Opal Gray is a life member of the Tennessee Sheriffs Association.

ATTACKING THE RIGHT TO VOTE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS
So Too Must Our Advocacy to Preserve Democracy By Nse Ufot, executive director of the New Georgia Project NNPA NEWSWIRE — February 23, 2022By BlackPressUSA Voting is a tool to hire people to go to Washington or the state capitol to do work on behalf of our communities. Voting is a tool to build the kind of country in which we want to live.Voting is a tool to hire people to go to Washington or the state capitol to do work on behalf of our communities. Voting is a tool to build the kind of country in which we want to live. Across the country, we are witnessing the continued trend of Republican leaders passing measures that make it harder for Black and poor people to vote. In Georgia’s Spaulding County, two Republican officials created a new law that only applies to the county to elect a fifth member of the Spaulding County Board of Elections. Upon the law’s passage, the legislators privately interviewed candidates, selected a Republican to fill the new vacancy and then the newly constituted group ended Sunday voting, which Black voters disproportionately use. In today’s environment, too many thought leaders are making conversations about voting rights academic, but the motivation for restricting voting is simple. Republicans wants to hold onto power. They want control at every level of government, from school boards to prosecutor and district attorney races to state legislatures to statewide offices to Congress and the White House. That creates conflict, because in the marketplace of ideas, fewer and fewer Americans are subscribing to the GOP vision for the nation. Given the juxtaposition between what Americans want and what the GOP is offering, the only way for Republicans to maintain power and control is to cheat. But the levers that allow Republicans to manipulate voting rules for partisan gain were laid years ago. In Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court eliminated Sections 4 and 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That allowed Republicans a means of restricting the right to vote without having to get their plans precleared by the Department of Justice. Many of the voting rights laws that we see today would have had to be precleared prior to going into effect. That extra step protected voters and the franchise. Unfortunately, all hell has broken loose since the Voting Rights Act was gutted. Making matters worse, in Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission, the Supreme Court allowed corporations and outside groups to spend unlimited funds on elections. That reversed a century-old precedent around campaign finance laws and allowed entities all over the country to interfere with elections, tipping the outcome in races without transparency or accountability. It also minimized average voters’ ability to determine candidates of choice. The truth is that unlimited dark money has terribly influenced American politics. But the nail in the proverbial coffin is redistricting. Redistricting is the drawing of state and congressional lines. It occurs once in a decade following the census and determines the number of seats allotted to each region. It also impacts who can win those seats in the first place. When redistricting is done unfairly, it gives certain politicians, namely Republicans, a chance at picking up more seats per state, even when the demographic population would naturally make it easier for a Democrat to win. When done with ill intent, elected officials pick their voters, and voters have little chance – regardless of how large their voting bloc may be – of determining candidates who will represent
their interests. It is one tool in a broader arsenal to dilute Black people’s voting power. Gerrymandered districts don’t just exist to give Republicans an upper hand; they’re done to prevent Black people from electing candidates of choice. More recently, in the South, there has been justifiable anger over the failure of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Organizers did all they could, but in the end, Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema tanked the bills. They have been on a roll lately. Both received massive donations after vowing to oppose President Biden’s $1.75 million infrastructure package, the Build Back Better Act. Manchin reportedly raked in $300,000 days after publicly opposing the Build Back Better Act and raised over $4.8 million in 2021. Sinema received over $1.5 million in the last quarter of 2021. The money came after Sinema objected to a change in the filibuster, opposed the Build Back Better Act, the climate change bill and a measure to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. One could be forgiven for drawing the conclusion that Manchin and Sinema sold out voters for campaign cash. This was not about Senate rules; this was about keeping donors happy.
Next, I want us all to remember that elected officials are not visionaries. They cannot lead our movements; they can only be servants of the people. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other elected officials are not leaders of the movement. They can be champions, but they are not our North Star. The North Star is love for self, love for family and love for the community. When elected leaders are no longer humble enough to do the people’s work, they must be replaced.
Attempts to make it harder to vote aren’t new. They have been going on in one form or another for decades. But here is the lesson I want readers to grasp: Organized resistance from ordinary people has been the most effective check on the power of the elite, dictators and authoritarian sympathizers. The power of the people has been the only check on the machinations of strong men. It has been the wall of resistance, challenging the power of money. In this moment, there are three things I’d like ordinary people to remember. First, we should follow the examples of the luminaries, including martyrs who have died for the cause of freedom. They’ve given us the playbook. We must be mindful and remember that one failed vote doesn’t mean we’ve failed. There will be additional opportunities to protect the franchise, even if we have to create those avenues. Third, voting is a tool to hire people to go to Washington or the state capitol to do work on behalf of our communities. Voting is a tool to build the kind of country in which we want to live. Certainly, we do not want to relinquish our right to vote, but it is important to remember that voting is a means to an end – not the end. In conclusion, my message to people who are discouraged is to remember the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice.” In the South, we focus on the work of bending the arc. The question we must ask ourselves is: What are we doing to bend the arc? What campaigns are we volunteering on or donating to that would help create the kind of world we envision? The arc is long but there is a place for all of us to engage. We are a part of an unbroken chain of freedom fighters. Let’s remember their legacy and continue the fight for justice. Poetic Expressions Birthmarks: Poems Paperback – March 12, 2020 by Whitney Rio-Ross (Author) Hagar raises her son across an unwelcoming border. Bathsheba tries to erase her trauma. Another breakup haunts the woman at the well. The poems in Birthmarks contemporize women of the Old and New Testaments and consider who they might be today. Drawing on history, subtext, and common female experiences, they reimagine these characters and their narratives, daring readers to meet the women of the Bible anew.
Editorial Reviews Review
“Whitney Rio-Ross’s poetry emerges out of what may be the single most damaging silence in the history of Christianity: the voices of women. The songs and speeches she has teased out of those silences are complex, moving, necessary--and now unforgettable.” --Christian Wiman, poet and essayist, author of My Bright Abyss “There is poetry and then there is poetry. Whitney RioRoss’s Birthmarks--right from the dedication--belongs in that latter category. Her poems are midrashic, attending with adoringly inquisitive and exquisitely irreverent attention to the bodies and stories of our biblical mothers, and reading these lines we cannot help but come aware of our own bodies and our own stories. This is the kind of attention that leaves a mark.” --Chris Green, Professor of Theology, Southeastern University

in place of an answer – a poem by Whitney Rio-Ross in place of an answer after Cy Twombly he asked me what i meant by god, as if some wisp of my soul could carry his abandon, solid enough to shoulder a self. if i stay still for long i can watch my colors lose themselves to the gaps between my footprints. i ask for a darker shade, some form of permanence, but am sent smeared fingers to stretch my frame without asking for directions. understanding is the greatest pretense we’ve found for erasure. our eyes are too weak to watch it disappear, arms too small to wrestle a blessing. i want to carry him an outline to hold, say this body is given for you, broken, open to embrace.

A lesson at 4-H.org/ daily fluid intake StayHydrated has given me new knowledge of the amount needed by all persons. We hear the magic are: number “8 cups” or “64 ounces” but is that for every- water (the best) unsweetened fruit juices one? It is a great health risk to drink too much or too - cucumbers little liquids each day. watermelon Drinking too much liquid in a short period of time flavored waters can be an easy thing to do if an athlete is preparing for cantaloupe- strawberries hydration in an event where heat or dryness will dehy- peaches - oranges drate him easily. Water intoxication is a name given tomatoes - plain yogurt - bell peppers - cabbage to this over drinking fluids. It is NOT common in our daily lives. The level of sodium is diluted in the body, - zucchini body cells then swell, the brain swells, and death can - broths/soups cauliflower - grapefruit - occur. There are liquids which make us dry and thirsty – help us have dehydration. Such drinks as sugar-sweetened beverages and booze cause fluid levels in our bodies to be low. Should everyone have 8 – 8ounce cups of hydrating liquid each day? It depends. Weight, health conditions, activity, climates, age, but most importantly is body weight. Body weight is 50% to 70% water. Below is a good rule of thumb.
