PLANTING West Tennessee TIME OUTDOORS

Good Friday with Ray Jones Send photos to: has passed by and it is a safe bet numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 that no freezes will affect your gardens at this point. If you haven’t planted it is not too late and most any summer plants can be planted in May. All of the recent shortages point to the need to grow your own food if possible. Many people like to garden for relaxation and still get the benefits of having fresh vegetables with no preservatives or pesticides. The value of having your food grown at home outweighs the work it takes to grow it. The pandemic caused people to rethink how they spent their time and new gardeners developed as a result. I encourage anyone who does not have a garden to start very small and give yourself a chance and it will grow on you just as your garden grows in the yard.

GRADUATION:

Where Value Meets Decisions

By Don Polley This semester I have literally run the gamut in education; from first grade to High School. What a refreshing break it was for me to sub for a first-grade teacher in a small rural school in January. Those students warmed my heart and made me feel welcome from the moment they walked into the classroom. I had taught primarily high school in both JMCSS and GCSSD prior to that assignment. Ironically, it reminded me somewhat of my first assignment at SGCHS in the fall of 2020 when students had came back to campus after the COVID shutdown. In both cases, they were glad to see a teacher in the classroom and willing to explore expectations for the upcoming school year.

Two Dyersburg residents arrested after alleged shooting, stalking incident

Cont’d from page 1 According to the Dyersburg Police Department, officers responded to Lipford Circle around 1 a.m. on May 12 after reports of a possible active shooter. Police say that a 24-year-old female victim reported that a suspect, later identified as Marcus McClendon, followed her from her home to Plummer Circle, and shot at her multiple times while she was in her vehicle. The victim states she left the area and returned to her home on Lipford Circle, where she observed McClendon’s vehicle nearby. When officers arrived, they discovered McClendon inside the vehicle along with a female passenger, identified as 40-year-old Laquanda Matthews. And Your Point is . . . GRADUATION:

cont’d from page 3

I remember the Spring of 2021 when there was still uncertainty regarding seniors and the end of the school year. Masks were mandatory for both students and teachers but all students were required to be on campus. Students, parents, make no mistake; teachers, administrators and educators were laser focused on serving the needs of their students. Students were appreciative of teachers that were understanding of their needs as in many cases the curriculum had to be adjusted to maximize learning. Sadly, there were still some students that chose to be regarded as victims of circumstance and too often were more disruptive than receptive. The simple truth is that due to technology students were able to fill the blanks in their

understanding of a subject matter and teachers were more than willing to help if they had any problems. I have always maintained that the path of least resistance is always the easiest one to take but more often than not, it leads to regret. I remember the joy I felt when my students were either moving to the next grade or graduating in the first year “post-pandemic.” I always shared with them that I was simply there to facilitate what they needed to learn to be successful and it was their responsibility to do the “heavy lifting.” Students always told me they liked me as a sub because I would always speak truth without demeaning or patronizing them. I shared with them that greatness is not for everybody, it is for those that choose to be great! In a post-graduation world, the decisions that the gradu-

ates make impact their lives, their future, and outlook of the education they have received to date. Dr. King and his leadership team have set a positive example, as to the value education can have by spotlighting academic achievements past and present. You cannot argue with results and simply look at JCM Early College High which has had more graduates as a part of dual-enrollment in the entire state of Tennessee! In other words, achieving both a high school diploma and an Associate Degree at the same time. Now that is impressive! I am proud to currently be a part of Gibson County Special School District and am looking forward to big things from the students I have worked with at Medina Middle School. Sixth graders with room to grow and a long way to

go. I hope that they feel I have had a positive impact on them during the time we have spent together. “Great individuals, like great companies, find a way to transform weakness into strength. They took what should have held them back—what in fact may be holding you back right this very second—and used it to move forward.” ~Ryan Holiday (The Obstacle Is the Way)

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH Are you okay? The truth is that it’s okay to not be okay….no one is “strong” all the time. Financial stress, job related stress, family issues, death, divorce are

all situations that we face that can become emotionally stressed out. The truth is that there are millions of people who are silently suffering. While their lives appear to be ideal, they are dealing with emotional stress that could led to suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 46% of people who die by suicide had a known mental health condition. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for people ages 15 to 44. Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, leaped to her death from a high-rise building dying at the age of 30. Kailia Posey, a teenage beauty pageant queen died by suicide at the age of 16. Arrlana Miller, age 19 was a freshman at Southern University and a cheerleader. Miller shared a final Instagram post talking about death and her history with suicidal thoughts. Since March three high profile college student athletes have died by suicide: Katie Meyer a star goalkeeper, Sarah Shulze, top runner for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Lauren Bernett, a softball player for James Madison University. Country music legend, Naomi Judd recently died from suicide. 1 in 10 of us are facing anxiety and depression right now. The truth is that most people would gladly receive help if we didn’t have to face all the stigmas associated with mental illness. What are people going to think! Society places shame on people who live with mental illness or even seek help for emotional distress. Research from the National Survey of Mental Health Literacy and Stigma shows that a common misconception about how society views anxiety is “most people believe that anxiety is a sign of personal weaknesses. The Mayo Clinic shared these valuable steps to cope with stigma: Get treatment. Just like you would go to a cardiologist for a heart issue, visit a mental health provider. Don’t allow the noise from yourself and others to prevent you from seeking help. Remember that it’s okay not to be okay but get treatment so you’ll know what’s wrong. Treatment can help reduce symptoms that you may be experiencing. Don’t let stigma create self-doubt and shame. Seeking counseling, educating yourself about your condition and connecting with other who have mental illness can help you gain self-esteem and overcome destructive self-judgement. Don’t isolate yourself. Your family, friends, teachers, professors, clergy, or members of your community can offer you support. There are support groups that you can join. You don’t have to suffer in silence. There’s a great quote from Lisa Olivera: “Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.” You don’t have to struggle in silence anymore. The strength comes when we seek to gain help. When we talk about our feelings, they become less burdensome, less overwhelming, and less scary. If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911 immediately. Last Friday, the Jackson, TN Old Hickory Rotary Club visited Denmark Elementary School and brought EVERY child a new pair of shoes and socks. They humbly washed each students feet and placed their clean socks and shoes on them. Words cannot express our appreciation. The students were very grateful. Rhea Fuller -5th Grade Teacher

Poetic Expressions Jackson Arts Council to Participate in National Economic Impact Study

Data Collection for Most Comprehensive Study of Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Culture Industry Jackson Arts Council is pleased to announce participation in Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), the most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States. Administered by Americans for the Arts, AEP6 will examine the economic impact of the arts and culture in Jackson, Tennessee, and 386 additional communities representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Arts & Economic Prosperity® series is conducted approximately every five years to gauge the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and the event-related spending by their audiences. In the City of Jackson alone, the nonprofit arts and culture industry was determined to generate $4.7 million in annual economic activity. The AEP series demonstrates that an investment in the arts provides both cultural and economic benefits. Audience-intercept surveys will be collected from attendees to arts events in Jackson from May 2022 through April 2023—in total, the national sample is anticipated to surpass 250,000 surveys. The national and local findings will be made public in September 2023. At that time, the Jackson Arts Council will receive a customized report on the unique economic impact results for Jackson, including the number of jobs that are supported and the amount of government revenue that is generated by our community’s nonprofit arts industry. “The Jackson Arts Council is proud to continue our partnership with Americans for the Arts in gathering economic impact data of the nonprofit arts and culture sector of Jackson, Tennessee,” said Lizzie Emmons, Executive Director of the Jackson Arts Council. “When you attend a cultural arts event in Jackson in the next 12 months, we ask that you will ‘Take 3 (minutes) for the Arts’ and complete a survey that gathers economic impact data.” At arts and culture events in Jackson, you will see “Take 3 for the Arts” slogan cards with a QR code link to the survey. Scan the code with your phone and complete the online survey at the event. Once compiled, these results will provide the arts and culture sector with crucial data to advocate for funding for the arts, so please, Take 3 for the Arts to fund more creative opportunities in Jackson. For more information and a full list of the communities participating in the AEP6 study, visit www.americansforthearts. org/AEP6

“THE FURY OF RAINSTORMS”

BY ANNE SEXTON

The rain drums down like red ants, each bouncing off my window. The ants are in great pain and they cry out as they hit as if their little legs were only stitched on and their heads pasted. And oh they bring to mind the grave, so humble, so willing to be beat upon with its awful lettering and the body lying underneath without an umbrella. Depression is boring, I think and I would do better to make some soup and light up the cave. Copyright © by the owner.

While working full-time as the Manager of Vocational Rehabilitation Services for the STAR Center, Vicki maintained a rigorous study schedule while supporting and job coaching clients, caring for her parents, and preparing for her son’s wedding! Special thanks to Woodstock Bakeshop for creating these custom cookies for Vicki’s pre-graduation surprise! Wendy Isom Mercer

As schools close for the summer, our 90 clubs for 4-H members conducted by Madison County Extension employees and volunteers end. The activities for youth grades 4-12 are plentiful during the summer months. I would like to salute the Jackson-Madison County School System and University School of Jackson for welcoming us to spend six 45-minute sessions each school year to teach Leadership, Citizenship, Health, etc. It is an honor when I join Mrs. Sharon Tubbs, 4-H Extension and Mrs. Linda Seaman, Program Assistant along with various volunteers to continue this program which began in our schools in 1950’s but is very pertinent today. The following teachers are winning classrooms in grades 4-6. These teachers have helped us promote and organize students each month to take on roles of club officers, make and enter items in contests, some classes dress in green each meeting day, and some hang the 4-H Pledge in a prominent place all the time, and students make and enter contests for public speaking, crafts, baking, etc. Points are given for all this work to be declared “Club of the Year”. The “Top Service-Learning Club” awards are based on the quality and quantity of service projects within their school and their communities. Congratulations to these teachers and principals of these schools. “Club of the Year” 4th Grade 1st Place – Ms. McLemore – Denmark 2nd Place – Ms. Boykin – USJ 3rd Place – Ms. Bond – Thelma Barker 4th Place – Ms. Pickens – Denmark 5th Place – Ms. Walker – Thelma Barker 6th Place – Ms. Griffin – South 7th Place – Ms. Brown – Denmark “Club of the Year” 5th Grade 1st Place – Ms. Watson – Denmark 2nd Place – Ms. Johnson – Denmark 3rd Place – Ms. Baker – South 4th Place – Ms. Fuller – Denmark Look at these 4-H club officers in 5th Place – Ms. Pledger – USJ Ms. Pickens room at Denmark 6th Place – Ms. Anderson – USJ and their designed 4-H shirts!!!7th Place – Ms. Garrett – USJ “Club of the Year 6th Grade Looking sharp!!! 1st Place – Ms. Morton – Pope “Top Service-Learning Club” 4th Grade 1st Place – Ms. McLemore – Denmark 2nd Place – Ms. Walker – Thelma Barker 3rd Place – Ms. Boykin – USJ 4th Place – Ms. Hart – Andrew Jackson 5th Place – Ms. Troutt – East 6th Place – Ms. Matthews – South 7th Place – Ms. Griffin – East “Top Service-Learning Club” 5th Grade 1st Place – Ms. Baker – South 2nd Place – Ms. Brown – Thelma Barker 3rd Place – Ms. Watson – Denmark 4th Place – Ms. Johnson – Denmark 5th Place – Ms. Sanderson – Thelma Barker 6th Place – Ms. Bremer – Thelma Barker 7th Place – Mrs. Hopper – Thelma Barker “Top Service-Learning Club” 6th Grade 1st Place – Ms. Morton – Pope 05-19-22 CSENEWS P.12
