When Charles Diggs, Jr. won election to Congress in Michigan’s 13th District in 1954, he launched nearly seven decades in which the city of Detroit had at least one Black member of Congress. That’s likely to change this year. Because of redistricting, Detroit no longer has majority-Black congressional districts. And in the first primary election with newly drawn district lines, a Black candidate did not win the Democratic contest in the heavily Democratic 13th. That means the city is likely to lack Black representation in Congress for the first time in decades. Redistricting is robbing Black candidates and voters of years of hard fought for op portunities. In Detroit, new districts merged Black areas of the city with white neigh borhoods across 8 Mile Road. The city stands to lose Black representation in Congress and have less representation in the state legislature. Knowing what the impact could be, voters have spoken out forcefully against the new redistricting maps from pulpits to street corners to the state capitol and even before the state courts.
Calling out and challenging means organizing, litigating, and legislating. It means sup porting national and local organizations that unite communities against racist gerryman dering and seek justice in the courts. They might not win every case, but advocacy and activism are essential to righting this wrong. We must also keep voting, running for office, and educating. My organization, People For the American Way, houses an African American Religious Affairs network that has reaffirmed for more than a decade that “every election matters and every vote counts” — and that includes primaries. For Black ministers in our network, voting and civic partici pation are acts of faith and so much more. As Reverend Dr. Steve Bland, Jr., pastor of Lib erty Temple Baptist Church in Detroit said, “It’s not about left or right. Splitting Detroit into two districts was an insult. But we have faith and must “deal with our self-interest by voting in every election!”
Southern Airways Express is the worst one yet! I’d rather drive to Nashville or Memphis and fly with any other airline. With so much industry coming to town I hope our city officials are able to get a better air service provider. Once again City of Jackson, TN - Government residents receive short end of the stick.Carry on is now considered a backpack. Anything with wheels is considered a checked bag. Plus the manager at the Atlanta station will cuss you out and tell you to call corporate. - Cesar Quispe

SAME STORY DIFFERENT AIRLINE
I know that a lot of media coverage of this summer’s primaries has focused on one big question: will Trump-style, MAGA candidates win or lose? But there’s another question that needs to be asked: how harmful are the impacts of redistricting on our communities in this year’s elections and those to come? The current reality dictates that we do not sit out any election. We need to resolutely register, educate, motivate and turn out voters. In every election. Every time. Ben Jealous serves as president of People for the American Way and Professor of Practice in the Africana Studies Depart ment at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches leadership. The post RedistrictingCOMMENTARY:isVoterSup pression Too first appeared on Post News Group.
COMMENTARY:REDISTRICTING IS VOTER SUPPRESSION TOO
Sadly, Michigan is not alone. The New York Times reported in August that this year, “judges in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Ohio have found that Republican legislators illegally drew those states’ congressional maps along racial or partisan lines, or that a tri al very likely would conclude that they did.” But elections are moving forward anyway. We’ve all heard about the restrictive voter suppression laws that far-right state legisla tures are passing. We’ve heard about the crackdowns on voting hours and mail-in voting, and even on giving food and water to voters in long lines. But we don’t hear enough about redistricting as another weapon being used to intimidate voters and keep us from exercising our constitutional rights. It is erasing us from Congress and state legislatures. We need to call it out and challenge it where we see it.

Directions: Preheat oven to 325⁰. In large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, pepper until blended. Pour into a 13X9” baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake until set, 15-18 minutes. Cool on a wire rack and cut into 12 portions. Toast breads lightly and spread butter on each bottom bread piece. Layer egg, cheese, meat, and other bread. Wrap in waxed paper and then in foil; freeze in a freezer container. To Use Frozen Sandwiches: Remove foil. Microwave a waxed paper wrapped sandwich at 50% power until thawed, 1-2 minutes. Turn sandwich over and microwave at 100% until hot, about 30-60 seconds. Let it stand 2 minutes before serving. ICost:just “shopped” online at local groceries, added tax, divided by 12 sandwiches, and found each sandwich can cost only $1.50 each. How does that compare to a Ham, Egg, & Cheese at any local food venue? The sandwich alone is usually $3-$5 but we give in and get the COMBO for $5-$8. This is a way to save money! Make and freeze sandwiches. Thank you, UT Extension Kitchen Divas, for sharing your wisdom with us!

It seems we ‘change gears’ at the change of seasons and the change of months. Schools are well under way, and our employment may have changed. August 31, 2022, the last day for TN tax-free food purchases. Yet ev erywhere food is purchased, prices are higher. If they are higher at the grocery for our purchase, they are higher for food-service places to purchase, and we get increased prices at restaurants and fast-food operations. In past articles we have discussed how pre-preparation allows family members to eat healthier foods if they are readily available. We were mentioning that chopping fruits and veggies, bagging them as a task many family members can do on a Sunday afternoon for the coming week. Now we have another reason to prepackage foods. Not only can we improve nutrition but now we really can save more money by preparing foods as “ready to eat”. Thanks to Tennille Short, UT Extension and the UT Kitchen Divas. You may watch them teach us how to freeze sandwiches at https://www.facebook.com/tennilleshort/vid eos/585526816593726

After graduating from Harvard University, where her undergraduate thesis received Magna Cum Laude honors, Caroline moved to Mississippi where she taught public school on a dirt road in Sunflower County for two years. In Mississippi, Caroline lived in an America many Americans are hardly aware of any longer, an America as rich in culture as it is wretched in poverty, towns still split into white and black by train tracks and bridges. During her second year, she taught 9th grade English to 86 kids who didn’t have a book to take home. She got that job by tutoring eight kids who the state of Mississippi said couldn’t pass the English exit exam—eight for eight, her kids passed. Caroline is a catalyst. She makes change possible by bringing art and joy into the room in such a way that the grit of real challenge and limits may become eclipsed by analysis, innovation, and skill.

Caroline Randall Williams
Born and raised in Nashville Tennessee, Harvard graduate Caroline Randall Williams is an award-win ning poet, young adult novelist, and cookbook author as well as an activist, public intellectual, performance artist, and scholar. She joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University in the Fall of 2019 as a Writer-in-Residence in Medicine, Health, and Society while she continues to work and speak to the places where art, business, and scholarship intersect, moving people closer to their best lives and corporations closer to their ideal identities. She has spoken in twenty states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia, in venues that range from as small as a classroom in a neighborhood school to as large as the Superdome mainstage during Essence Fest. To every speaking engagement Caroline brings a fierce intelligence, disarming charm, a touch of glamour, and a depth of lived experience that belies her thirty-two years. She has taught in two of the poorest states in the union — Mississippi and West Virginia — and she has been educated at two of the richest universities on the globe — Harvard and Oxford. Named by Southern Living as “One of the 50 People changing the South,” the Cave Canem fellow has been published and featured in multiple journals, essay collections and news outlets, including The Iowa Review, The Massachu setts Review, CherryBombe, Garden and Gun, Essence and the New York Times. You may have seen her on Morning Joe, or Dr. Oz, or Hardball with Chris Matthews. More likely you’ve read her. Caroline’s first book, The Diary of B.B. Bright, Possible Princess (co-authored with Alice Randall) won the Harlem Book Fair’s Phillis Wheatley Prize and was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award. Her second co-authored volume, Soul Food Love won the NAACP Image Award and got her invited to speak at The Smithsonian. In 2017 the New York Times pub lished an op-ed she wrote, and it went viral. Her book of poetry, Lucy Negro Redux, earned rave reviews and got optioned to become a ballet. In 2019 the ballet debuted to more rave reviews with the New York Times review concluding that Lucy Negro Redux was “something wildly original, something so unlike anything else that all description falls short of its otherworldly reality. A place where, when the curtain drops, the very city cries out: “Brava! Brava! Oh, brava!” Another reviewer wrote, “All this is to say that Attitude: Lucy Negro Redux is not just original, but revolutionary — marking a seismic shift in the art form not just in Nashville, but in dance the world-over.” No wonder she was chosen in 2015 by Southern Living as one of “50 People Changing the South” for her work around food justice, and in 2016 as a national Neiman Marcus “Face of Beauty” because she personifies “beauty, brains, and passion.”

According to a Lancaster Police Department news release, 43-year-old football coach Mike Hickmon was allegedly shot to death by 39-year-old Yaqub Talib — a coach on the opposing team and brother to ex-NFL player Aqib Talib. Police said the shooting happened just before 9:00 p.m. at a community park in Lancast er, a city about 15 miles outside of Dallas. Witnesses told police a “disagreement between the opposing coaching staff of two youth football teams over calls made by the officiating crew” led to a physical altercation that then escalated, prompting Talib to shoot Hickmon multiple times, the release reads. He was shot because some adults were mad at a referee, got into an altercation, and one of them pulled his gun and killed Coach Hickmon.
