Squirrel hunters in our area are reporting excellent num bers from most hunts. It is that time when the opportunity to get in the woods and match wits with crafty squirrels comes around. The survival skills they use keeps the excitement going at all times. They can hide on a limb and secure their body and tail so it can’t be seen. Their instincts and ability to elude people makes hunting them a fun challenge. The nut trees are loaded this year, which is good for squir rel hunting success. The bottoms are cooler also this time of year than hill land hunting. Squirrel hunting is a good way to enjoy the outdoors with out pressure to keep up with dogs. Success can be had with just a trip to the woods and if you never see a squirrel you still came out ahead.

Madison County Sheriff John Mehr is pleased to announce that Deputy James Martin was presented the prestigious award, “Beyond the Traffic Stop”, by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO). The award was presented to Deputy Martin at the annual THSO, Lifesavers Conference, on August 19th in Franklin, TN. This award resulted from a traffic stop made by Deputy Martin, as follows: On February 16, 2022 at 0335 hours, while patrolling Interstate 40 in Madison County, Deputy Martin observed a blue Hyundai Genesis bearing Illinois tag BZ 92997 fail to signal while changing lanes and cross the fog line. Deputy Martin conducted a traffic stop at the 92.8 mile marker of Interstate 40 (westbound) with the vehicle. Deputy Martin made contact with the driver and passenger, and while speaking with the driver he observed a green leafy residue all over the center console. Due to Deputy Martin’s experience and training, he knew that the residue was marijuana. While waiting of backup to arrive Deputy Martin continued to speak with the driver while filling out a warning site for the infraction and noticed discrepancies in his story about where he had been and where he was going. Once backup arrived a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted and deputies located four duffle bags containing vacuum sealed bags of marijuana. 62.97 year, Deputy Martin has seized over 648 pounds of marijuana, 54.9 oz. of methamphetamine, 5 pounds of cocaine, 296 doses of oxycodone, 16 firearms, $185,470 in U.S. currency Sheriff John Mehr is extremely proud of Deputy Martin for his hard work and dedication to the Madison County Sher iff’s Office. csenewsnow.com

MCS Deputy Goes “Beyond the Traffic Stop”
The Takeout!
It also should improve outcomes in America’s youth justice systems.
#NNPA BLACKPRESS
According to new Sentencing Project research, diverting youth from juvenile court involvement should be a central focus in reducing racial and ethnic disparities.
“Compared with youth who are diverted, youth who are arrested and for mally petitioned in court have a far higher likelihood of subsequent arrests and school failure,” wrote Richard A Mendel, Senior Research Fellow and Youth Justice at the Sentencing Project.
Other youth of color – including Latinx youth, Tribal youth, and Asian/Pacific Island er youth – are also less likely than their white peers to be diverted.

Come on N. KFC may have some finger licking good chicken but Chef MTM is serving up some mighty good food for the soul. And if you leave empty, U didn’t come to be filled! Leave a donation because U probably didn’t come to tithe either: Our souls were never meant to inhabit a world like this. It’s way too much. We just should release everything into the hands of Jesus. Continue to give everyone and everything to God. “Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:30) We’ve got to let it go. When this is done, what you’re doing is creating soul space for God to come in. We must empty ourselves of all that fills us so that we may be filled with what we are empty of. C U! “The lack of diversion opportunities for youth of color is pivotal because the greater likelihood of formal processing in court means that youth of color accumulate longer court histories, leading to harsher consequences for any subsequent arrest,” Mendel asserted.“Expanding diversion opportunities for youth of color, therefore, represents a crucial, untapped opportunity to address continuing disproportionality in juvenile justice,” he noted. The in-depth analysis of the juvenile justice system’s unequal and limited use of diver sion from court involvement, particularly for Black youth, found that in 2019, 52% of delinquency cases involving white youth were handled informally (diverted), far higher than the share of cases diverted involving Black youth (40%).
The report found the glaring disparity between Black and white youth in every major offense category. “Overwhelming research finds that diverting youth from the court system yields better outcomes for young people’s futures and public safety,” Mendel insisted.“Yetdiversion remains sorely underutilized, espe cially for youth of color, and unequal treatment in diversion is a key driver for even larger disparities in confinement later in the process.”Released on Aug. 30, the report, “Diversion: A Hidden Key to Combating Racial and Ethnic Dispar ities in Juvenile Justice,” examined decades of research showing how edu cational, career and public safety outcomes are better for youth diverted away from juvenile courts. It provided a primer on diversion and its impact on racial equity – specifically, the report revealed that: Compared to youth formally involved in court,
MADISON COUNTY FOSTER ASSOCIATION HOSTS EVENT FOR PROSPECTIVE FOSTER FAMILIES
By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
The report’s author wrote that getting arrested in adolescence or having a delinquency case filed in juvenile court clearly damages young people’s futures and increases their subsequent involvement in the justice system.
The Madison County Foster Association will host an event for Prospective Foster Families to meet with fos tering agencies in Jackson, TN. The event will be held Saturday, September 10th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Northside Church. The address is 2571 North Highland Avenue; Jackson, TN 38305. We invite the community to come meet with current foster families as well as fostering agencies such as Camelot, DCS, Madison County CASA, Meritan, Omnivision, TN Baptist Children’s Home, and Youth Villages.
“Pre-arrest and pre-court diversion can avert these bad outcomes,” Mendel concluded.
According to Mendel’s research, Black youth are far more likely to be arrested than their white peers and far less likely to be diverted from court following arrest.

Man charged in jogger abduction kidnapped attorney in 2000

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The man charged with kid napping a Tennessee woman jogging near the University of Memphis last week spent 20 years behind bars for a previous kidnapping. This booking photo provided by the Shelby County Sher iff’s Office, shows Cleotha Abston on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022. The Memphis Police Department said Sunday, Sept. 4 that Abston has been charged with kidnapping and tam pering with evidence in the disappearance of Eliza Fletcher, a Tennessee woman who was out jogging last week when she was accosted and forced into an SUV. (Shelby County Sheriff’s Office via AP) U.S. Marshals arrested 38-year-old Cleotha Abston on Saturday after police detected his DNA on a pair of sandals found near to where Eliza Fletcher was last seen, accord ing to an arrest affidavit. Police also linked the vehicle they believe was used in the kidnapping to a person at a residence where Abston was staying. While Fletcher has not been found, Memphis police said in the affidavit they believe she was seriously injured in the abduction, which was caught on surveillance video. Authorities have said Fletch er, 34, was jogging around 4 a.m. on Friday when a man approached her and forced her into an SUV after a brief struggle. Fletcher was report ed missing when she did not return home that morning. Abston previously kid napped a prominent Mem phis attorney in 2000, the Commercial Appeal reported. When he was just 16 years old, Abston forced Kemper Durand into the trunk of his own car at gunpoint. After several hours, Abston took Durand out and forced him to drive to a Mapco gas station to withdraw money from an ATM. At the station, an armed Memphis Housing Authority guard walked in and Durand yelled for help. Abston ran away but was found and arrested. He pleaded guilty in 2001 to especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, according to court records. He received a 24year sentence. https://www. wbbjtv.com 09-08-22 CSENEWS

Praise for Table Scraps and Other Essays: Table Scraps is a memoir resolute in its beauty, achieving the impossible yet essential: it enters so wholly and gloriously into that region of immemorial love, both universal and entirely intimate, at once exile and Eden.
Juyanne James
Caitlin Gilson, author of Immediacy and Meaning On her grace path to the truth, Juyanne James travels through a vivid landscape of humor, blues, and a vivid kind of personal revelation available only in a rare writer . . . . James brings the reader not only into her upbringing in rural Louisiana, but into the heart of a family, with all its challenges, complexities, and, above all, love.

The Dragons will be at home next Saturday when they host Benedict College at Lane Stadium.
The Dragons wasted no time showing off their of fense as Senior quarterback Michael Huntley found re ceiver Jacquez Jones on the third play from scrimmage for a 70-yard touchdown. The Lions would answer back on their next three drives to make the score 17-7 as the first quarter came to a close. Running back Ike Brown made it a one score game early in the second quarter when he punched it in from one yard out after a 45-yard reception from Virgil Young gave the visitors the ball on the inside the 1-yard line.

The Lane defense seemingly stopped the Lions on the next possession but a roughing the passer penalty on third and long extended the drive for UAPB. They took advantage of the mistake and scored three plays later to go up 41-28.
O’Joshua Bunton set the Dragons up nicely, taking the ensuing kickoff back 65 yards to the UAPB 36-yard line how ever Brown was stopped on 4th-and-goal as Lane turned the ball over on downs to the Lions.
Huntley finished 15-for-21 with 328 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM. 09-08-22
Brown would give Lane the lead again on their next possession when he took a screen pass from Huntley 30 yards to the end zone making the score 21-17.
The preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the SIAC registered 12 tackles including 6.0 tackles for loss and one sack.
Huntley orchestrated a drive that moved the ball into UAPB territory, but a false start on 4th-and-1 set the Dragons back and the senior signal-caller was sacked on fourth down to give the ball back to the Lions with 1:49 left to play. UAPB would run out the clock and avoid the upset.
Prince again gave the hosts great field position with a 21-yard return and the Lions took advantage, scoring in just five plays and covering 52 yards.
Jeremiah Brown was in on 14 tackles and Nijul Canada finished with 11 stops.
Bunton was the top receiver, catching five passes for 110 yards while Jones had four grabs for 106 yards.
The Lane College football team kicked off their 2022 season with a trip to Arkansas on Satur day to take on NCAA Division I member UAPB.
UAPB then returned the opening kickoff of the second half 85 yards for a touchdown.
Vyron Brown’s offense quickly responded with a four play, 65-yard drive capped off by another 1-yard touchdown run from Ike Brown.
The defense stepped up the next two possessions, forcing a punt and a missed field goal that gave Lane the ball with a chance to score and take the lead with 5:02 left in the game.
Senior defensive end Andrew Farmer had a career day on the defensive side of the ball.
The defense stepped up three plays later as Tyshun Gaiter forced a fumble and Jeffrey Johnson scooped it up and took it into the end zone to bring Lane to within six.

The Penny Hardaway Memphis District Golf Classic is sponsored by the Memphis District Laymen, an auxiliary of the National Laymen Association Memphis District Laymen which is part of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.
Formerly the Memphis District Golf Classic, this is the third year for the charity event which serves as the official golf tournament of the Southern Heritage Classic. Retired NBA player and coach of the Memphis Tigers Men’s Basketball Team Coach Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway agreed to attach his name to the effort after being introduced to the organiza tion and its programs that support youth sports and provide college scholarships. Each year, approximately 100 hundred players hit the greens to play golf for a great cause. Cigna global health service company returned as the title sponsor for the third year. The Penny Hardaway Memphis District Golf Classic is being held at Tunica National Golf & Tennis with a tee time of 8 a.m.

When one of our committee members, Don Holmes, suggested Penny we all agreed that he was the perfect person. He’s an accomplished athlete and coach and an avid golfer with a deep-rooted love of the Memphis commu nity. We appreciate his willingness to attach his name and efforts to ours as we continue to make a positive impact in the lives of youth.”
