The University of Limerick is on a modern campus located 5km outside Limerick City overlooking the river Shannon. There are superb facilities for our conference with large modern lecture halls and tutorial rooms. The accommodation is on-campus and is reached on foot by crossing the ‘Living Bridge’ over the Shannon. There is also a fantastic sports arena with a state of the art gym and 50-metre swimming pool. It is often used for pre-season training by the Irish rugby team as well as many well known English Premiership soccer teams.

Dear friends, It is a real pleasure for us to host the ESPN course for the first time in Ireland. It’s particularly appropriate now because we have only recently developed a separate paediatric neurosurgery department in Dublin. Ireland also has the youngest population in the European Union and neurosurgical problems in this group are common (particularly congenital defects). The University of Limerick was chosen because of its excellent facilities and accommodation. It is also in the west of the country, the heartland of Ireland’s Celtic past. For those of you who wish to stay longer in the country, the scenic areas of Connemara (to the north) and Kerry (to the south) are merely an hour’s travel away. Accommodation this year is on-site in the University. The ‘student’ residences are extremely comfortable and as good as any hotels in the previous courses. Evening entertainment will have a local slant to it, with traditional Irish music and dancing and a medieval banquet on the penultimate night. The main topics this year are hemispheric tumours, pineal tumours, image guided surgery, epilepsy surgery, infection and surgery for spasticity. The afternoon workshops are tailored to reflect the material from the morning lectures. This year we have made a special effort to make them interesting and practical. We welcome all the delegates and faculty to Limerick for the 2011 course. Céad míle fáilte roibh go léir Darach
