Chinastar Square Mixed Use Building - Macau, China Landscape Lighting Design Proposal The design intent is to create an extension of the interior to the exterior of the residential area of the building. The selection of trees in the landscape suggested medium to wide beam angle spotlights aimed at foliage with mushroom head decorative bollards for low-level lighting. Childrens play area located on the right side of the plan includes glowing interactive seats and adds color to the space.

3000K color temperature is used with CRI90+ for better color rendering of the trees foliage for seasonal trees that changes leaf color with some species of flowering trees that fits Macau’s humid climate. Water feature also uses the same color temperature except the pool with 4000K to create cooler visual contrast on the surrounding greeneries.

Nanchang East Rail Station Transportation Building - Nanchang, China Facade Lighting Design Proposal The design intent for the project is to come up with a facade lighting that highlights the arch facade of the entrance with minimum number of mounting points for lighting. Visibility range is also considered in the design, with viewing proximity from high-rise building to low level veiwing angles. The lighting needs to cover all sides because the project is at the heart of the city.

Architect limited the locations of fixture to not affect the aesthetic of the lobby. Fixtures are installed in dedicated channel with anti-glare optics for downlights and glare shield accessories for the spotlight. Aiming and beam angle selection is tested using DIALux Basic. Due to the reflective nature of lobby’s materiality, we advised architect’s team to change the color of the floor to lighter color to achieve more bounce of light that can create canvas of brightness on the wall and ceiling’s reflective surfaces.

Addition of integrated spotlight creates emphasis to highlight the living design element inside the architecture. It helps create a focal point in a busy space as shown in the sample photo.
Good distance of fitting from the tree results a more controlled effect with minimal shadow created in relevant surfaces. It’s also cohesive with lighting effect from outer core trees.
Downlights pointing downward creates a uniform brightness in the space which is not the intent.
The original intent is to showcase the outer foliage of the trees that would require high-powered fitting for maximum visibility in further distance. Using this might create unwanted shadows that distracts audience from focal point, especially once installed near walls.

This proposal is a variation of the initial lighting design proposal improved to accomodate actual site conditions.
Exploring creative lighting options gives variety of solution for dynamic application. One solution is floodlighting and projection, not focusing on facade element but overall ambiance of the space during nighttime.
Another proposal exploring creative lighting solution with LED pixel display. This is different than other LED displays since the proposal still keep visibility of the other side of glass at daytime.
The proposal utilizes the void inside the archiectural facade, filling it with dynamic lighting installation equally visible from both sides of the building: interior and exterior.

Border Lights Clue Lighting Design Competition Light and Disruption: Exploring the role of light in emergencies For Clue Edition 5, the challenge explores light during emergency offering alot of possibilities to explore. My design intent is to propose feasible solution that focuses in the evacuation problem of my home country during heavy storms. The solution is a series of pole lighting that uses “storm energy” to light up the seaside residences, with illumination getting brighter as the storm intensifies.
