1
FIRST AND ZERO CONDITIONAL.
ďƒ˜ The First Conditional
ďƒ˜ Concept : The first conditional has the present simple after 'if', then the future simple in the other clause: if + present simple, ... will + infinitive
2
It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what will happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.
3
We are talking about the future. We are thinking about a particular condition or situation in the future, and the result of this condition.
Notice that we are thinking about a future condition. It is not raining yet. But the sky is cloudy and you think that it could rain.
4
The important thing about the first conditional is that there is a real possibility that the condition will happen.
Do you remember the two basic structures? 5
Example 1: IF
CONDITION
RESULT
Present Simple
will + base verb
If
I see Mary,
I will tell her.
If
Tara is free tomorrow,
he will invite her.
If
they do not pass their exam, their teacher will be sad.
If
it rains tomorrow,
will you stay at home?
If
it rains tomorrow,
what will you do?
Example 2: For the future phrase we mostly use the simple future with will, but you can also use the simple future with going
6
to a modal verb: can, might, should, or must. 1) Will If it doesn't rain on Monday, we will go camping.
2) Going to If I don't have to go to work the Saturday, I am going to visit my sister. 7
3) Can If football ends early, we can go for drinks.
4) Might If I have time, I might go to the party. 8
5) Should If your father invites you to lunch, you should go see him.
6) Must 9
If you don't like restaurant food, you must call its chef.
ďƒ˜ The Zero Conditional
10
ďƒ˜
Concept :
The zero conditional uses if or when and must be followed by the simple present or imperative. Function The zero conditional is used to make statements about the real world, and often refers to general truths, such as scientific facts. In these sentences, the time is now or always and the situation is real and possible. If + present simple ... present simple.
11
This conditional is used when the result will always happen.
The sentences, therefore, have two parts, or clauses. In English, we use the 12
word “if to determine the condition in the first clause, and the result in the other clause.
Form In zero conditional sentences, the tense in both parts of the sentence is the simple present.
13
14
If clause (condition)
Main clause (result)
If + simple present
simple present
If this thing happens
that thing happens.
A clause is defined as a set of words that form a complete meaning.
Example 1:  A simple sentence like I am a student. (I am a student.) It has a clause.  A complex sentence like I am a student, but she is a teacher.
15
(I am a student, but she is a teacher.) It has two clauses. ďƒ˜
The order of the clauses
You can reverse the order of the clauses without changing the meaning. That is, the main clause can come before the conditional clause. Example 2: You get green if you mix blue and yellow.
16
When to use the comma If the sentence begins with the conditional clause, you must put a comma between this clause and the main clause. If the sentence begins with the main clause, the clauses are not separated with a comma.
17
Examples: 1) Ice melts if you heat it.
2) If it rains, the grass gets wet.
3) If you take care of the tree, it will grow. 18
4) If you feel sick, go to the doctor.
5) If you go swimming, you get wet.
19
6) When she exercises, she feels better.
