OTAVALO TOURISTIC GUIDE LOCATION AND TRADITIONS Otavalo, town, north-central Ecuador, in the highlands of the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 2,573 meters (Viajando).

History The area was densely settled by the Otavalo Indians prior to its conquest by the Incas and became a Spanishcontrolled settlement in the 16th century. Largely destroyed in the 1868 earthquake, the town has since been rebuilt (EcuRed).

Agriculture and crafts The surrounding land, owned in small parcels by the Otavalo Indians, produces cereals, potatoes, fruit, and livestock. The weekly

Indian

markets

and

animal

markets are famous tourist attractions. The Indian market is known mainly for its cotton and woolen textiles (ponchos, carpets), leather goods, and native jewelry (Bernarda Elisa, 2017).

SIGHTSEEING Otavalo is the type of place everyone tells you to go to if you have not been. It could easily rank second after Cotopaxi in terms of most visited tourist sites in continental Ecuador. And there is a simple reason. On Saturdays, the town becomes South America’s largest indigenous market. It is incredible to be in Ecuador to know its customs; it makes us think how big the world is.

Plaza de Ponchos Visitors arrive for the traditional wares sold at the Poncho market (Plaza de Ponchos) and on the many streets that lead up to it. It takes place from 9 AM to about 2 PM, by which time many vendors

start packing up their goods or are in the process of doing so (Otavalotravel).

Animal market The town, however, gets busy much earlier than this at its fascinating animal market, which begins before

daybreak. Where they sell all kinds of animals such as: chickens, guinea pigs, cows, ducks, among others animals (Hernรกndez, 2020). Guided more or less peacefully on a rope leash by their owners from farms in the outlying hills, pigs, goats, llamas, sheep, horses (and many other farm animals) crowd the dirt-covered expanses just outside the town. A lot of it is friendly barter, but heated arguments can be sparked by the price of a hen or a rabbit.

Guinea pigs Guinea pigs, those cute furry creatures Westerners keep as pets, are priced at around a dollar and famously cooked rotisserie-style to become one of rural Ecuador’s central delicacies.

OTAVALO PARADISE

Clothing OtavaleĂąos are easily recognized by their traditional dress: white pants and a dark poncho for men; a dark skirt and a white blouse with colourful embroidery and colourful waisteband for women. Both sexes wear their hair long (Juanpch, 2018). Women

Mens

The clothing of the people of Otavalo represents the colors of the plants and the sun. It is very interesting since it shows respect for the land and its customs.

BEAUTIFUL PLACES Peguche waterfall Peguche Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall of 18 m in height, formed by the river of the same name, which starts at Lake San Pablo (Arias, 2016). The waterfall is one of the most important tourist attractions of Otavalo. Because of its proximity and easy access, several tourists and visitors come to the sector to meet and enjoy a unique landscape (Ordóùez, 2018). It is considered a sacred place in the culture of the peoples of Otavalo because a property of the Indians is their relationship

with

the

natural

environment,

especially the mountains, water, trees with respect to whom remains a cluster of meanings

that inspired and inspire tales, myths and legends and rituals.

It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the country, this due to its nature and the legends that are told in this place. It is a place where you have contact with nature, it is very beautiful. People consider that this site, a place of harmony with nature as they mention it, contact with gods like the sun and the earth, is very suitable.

San Pablo Lagoon San Pablo Lake is a beautiful eye of water guarded by the Imbabura volcano and is only 5 minutes from Otavalo (Ecuador.com).The San Pablo Lagoon, located at the foot of the majestic Imbabura Volcano, offers several trails that will take us to natural viewpoints such as “El Lechero and Mira Lago.

In the San Pablo lagoon you can practice many sports such as cycling and sport fishing. The food there is different varieties such as fried fish, chicken soup, and wheat bread. Locals are very friendly. The landscapes are very beautiful and many have many legends. It is an incredible place to rest.

Mojanda lagoon Breathtaking Views, Clean Fresh Air, And Total Tranquility is what you will find in the Private Small Residential community. The area is called Mojandita and it is located on top of a hill overlooking a lake and majestic Snow covered mountain ranges (propertyshelf). The weather in Otavalo is pleasant all year round with average highs in the mid-60’s F (20-25 C) and lows around 50 F (7 C). The major factor is rain, which

can come at any month of the year and any time of the days, though afternoon showers are most common. In my opinion I think Otavalo is one of the most beautiful places, the food and the variety of fruits make this place a paradise. Also, the people are very friendly, which makes enjoying the places in a better way. Otavalo is one of the most visited cities in Ecuador, by European tourists who are welcome to this beautiful place.

Otavalo will be more than proud to have you or anybody here, as it is a peaceful and quiet city is perfect for you to relax and do your thing calmly. Its nature and people make it the safest city in the country, and according to my experience, I could say it was one if not the most enjoyable places I have been to; I invite all of you to come over and see what this beautiful city has to offer either for fun or academic purposes. Otavalo is waiting for you
