2012 | The Basis of Architectural Design | HABITATION | ROW HOUSES

Habitation | Row Houses between public and private

Oscillating between the need for privacy and meeting with other people, the indwelling remains the main focus of architecture, aiming to find a link between the home, as the center of the world, and the neighborhood, as openness to the others.

The study invites us to ask questions about what does it mean to live in a community. The more or less private use of the land given, and the openness to the neighborhood will be set in concordance with our own scenario of living. The main objectives of the study are: the integration in the neighborhood, creating a community, living in and around the house, and an inovative scenario of habitation between public and private.

The concept starts from the idea of living together, and especially, living together with nature, thus, the home and the garden come together as two halves of the same whole. The shapes of both the house and the garden are following the simple geometry of the site. The relationship between

this two lines alowed us to form, with a single cut, both the house and it’s private terrace. The parcel seems like the union of two “volumes”, positive and negative, the built and the unbuilt space, the house and the garden, creating a dialogue between the dwelling and it’s own private garden. Behind the house opens a semi public garden that can be enjoyed by all residents of the housing complex. The private yards of the houses open to form a unique courtyard in which the natural and the mineral coexist. The houses come as a sound and visual barrier between the semi public garden and the street, making the court a space that can be used safely both by adults and by children. In the facade facing the

street I placed only a few openings, willing to create openings, willing to create a sound and visual barrier. Behind it and in front of a glazing wall, it lies a small terrace-garden that allows light to flood the house. The entrance into house is on the ground floor, through a wall which is deviated from the main plane of the facade, that way the entrance being covered. The main floor is occupied by the living area and the kitchen, while the bedrooms are on the underground floor with direct acces to the private terrace. On the first floor is placed an office, with acces to a small garden and overlooking a green wall. All the activities of the house pours onto the terrace and furthermore onto the semi-public courtyard.

ROW HOUSES | HABITATION | The Basis of Architectural Design | 2012

01 The identification of a man with his house, the meeting of the family members around “the hearth of the house, the ties within a community, and the relationships within the neighborhood are the main subjects when trying to search a solution in response to habitation.

2017 | Diploma Project | RESIDENTIAL CARE CENTER FOR ELDERLY

Diploma project | Residential care center an intergenerational approach

The contemporary society is in the position to give a quick and efficient answer to an unprecedented issue: the demographic aging. “Architecture is a discrete and non-invasive therapeutic tool that uses it carefully leads to successful interventions both physically and mentally.” The purpose of architecture is, in these conditions, one of the links between the needs of the aging population and political action, being one of the most important factors in the chain of reforming factors.

Today we are talking about an approach where the elderly remain “a resource for their families, for the community and for the economy” through “active aging” policies and programs that improve the health, participation and security of elderly citizens. There is also talk of the importance of active participation of seniors in society, the importance of intergenerational co-existence, and the need to provide a tailored environment tailored to the elderly so that they can remain autonomous and independent for as long as possible. 2017 | Academic Project Diploma Project Studio 6 Mentors Prof.PhD.Arch. Dan Corneliu SERBAN Structures coordinator Lect. Drd. Ing. Dragos MARCU

07

For the first time, the role of architecture as the main modelator of the built environment, is recognized as one of the key factors contributing to the construction of an environment adapted to all ages.

Assisted residential units can help keep seniors in the community, giving them opportunities to interact with people from different generations. Maintaining older people’s work can be translated as an occupational therapy, and intergenerational activities can help them stay connected to the community and to the new. The accommodation area performs in a contemporary urban manner the way of living and the aesthetics of typical Bucovina houses. The entrance to the ground floor makes the passage between the exterior and the semi-public interior. Active retention of the elderly will be done by integrating a student / student dwelling area, thus encouraging intergenerational relationships and social activities.

Keeping in touch with the community can also be achieved by placing commercial activities and services at the center, such as a shop selling manually-made items by the elderly, craftsmanship workshops where the elderly can demonstrate various techniques and crafts to young people, a restaurant or a confectioner who can sell products prepared after grandmother’s recipes, and others. All these include occupational therapy, which contributes to the daily relationship between members of different ages of a community for the purpose of social integration. The center will also benefit from medical and therapeutic functions such as physiotherapy, kinetotherapy and hydrotherapy, which will also be open to the community.

The site is located in Suceava county, Romania, in the George Enescu neighborhood, located in the southwestern part of the town. Being located in the immediate peripheral area of the center, makes the site very easily accessible, and, at the same time, protected from the noise and the central agglomeration. The proximity of George Enescu Boulevard facilitates connections in the city with civic center, administrative center, “Nasterea Domnului” Municipal Cathedral, “Zimbrul” Shopping Center and, last but not least, with “Sfântul Ioan cel Nou de la Suceava” Municipal Hospital. The proximity of the forest creates another advantage for the site, offering the opportunity for integration in nature beneficial to the users.

The surroundings create the framework for the development of such an assisted residential center for the elderly. The presence of the Children’s Placement Center “White Corner”, as well as the location near general schools and high-schools (Sports High School, Technical College of Food Industry, Dimitrie Cantemir Economic College) facilitate intergenerational ties.

2016 | The Synthesis of Architectural Design | URBAN HYBRID | BUILDING INSERTS IN A PROTECTED AREA

Urban Hybrid | Building Inserts in a Protected Area structure - technology - expresion

The exercise aims at imagining an “Urban Insert for the XXI Century whilst putting into practice the latest technology in the field of special structures. It also aims at finding architectural solutions to be based on innovation, creativity and proper functioning of the space. The overall theme of this project aims to explore the relationship between spatial expression, structure and technology in a dense and very valuable urban tissue: Victory Avenue, a major avenue in central Bucharest. Traditionaly, the road was known as Brasov Road, being part of the trade route between Bucharest and the city of Brasov, in Transylvania. Today, the avenue is lined with new fashion shops, art boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, making it an upmarket shopping strip in Bucharest.

2014 | The Basis of Architectural Design | COMMUNITY | SOCIAL HOUSING IN AN UNDERPRIVILEGED AREA

Community Social Housing Ensemble in an Underprivileged Area dense urban living in Bucharest

The theme of this dense urban housing project approaches the collective dwellings. The necessity of this program is due to a combination of factors, particularly of socio-economic nature and its implementation over time resulted in significant changes in the structure of the city and of the society.

Located at the intersection of two urban tissues defined by two diferent height regimes (the high blocks on the Giugiului street and the lowrise residential area behind them), the ensemble will take the height of the neighbors and an from a complex of blocks P + 3 will develop, in the intersection, an accent of fifteen levels. 2012 | Academic Project Architectural Design Studio 3 Mentors Prof.PhD.Arch. The building is located so that they form a continuous street front, giving to the enclosed space a special character. Between the buildings takes form an enclosure, a patio, designed to satisfy the leisure needs of tenants. The residential complex contains studios and apartments with 2, 3 and 4

bedrooms. I started with the wish that these homes be “flooded with light and therefore I gave the flats double orientation, towards the yard and towards the street. Also, each apartment, including the studios, have a loggia oriented toward the inner courtyard, which can also open entirely, thus unifying the dwelling space.

SOCIAL HOUSING IN AN UNDERPRIVILEGED AREA | COMMUNITY | The Basis of Architectural Design | 2014

04 “The primordial instinct of every human being is to assure himself of a shelter. The various classes of workers in society today no longer have dwellings adapted to their needs; neither the artisan nor the intellectual. It is a question of building which is at the root of the social unrest of today: architecture or revolution.” Le Corbusier - “Vers une architecture” 1923
