HE main focus of this proposal was to design a space whose characteristics should demonstrate the correlation between a previous grid, design randomly, and the three- dimensional space it led to. In this process we were given a character to whom we should create a shelter with the intrinsic characteristics of reflection and introspection of this required transcendent atmosphere.

ANCE school, a project that brings together a new series of buildings in an asymmetrical composition around existing heritage buildings from the historical centre of Oporto. An entire block located in between two major circulation arteries of the city, descends to a lower level as a way of minimizing the impact of the overall mass on the streetscape. Therefore giving, like a ‘see through’ bubble, the excellent privacy and acoustic conditions required for the calm atmosphere of a small green campus, music classes and auditorium presentations.

OCATED in a cliff from Douro’s river, in the sunny side, lies an unoccupied terrain for which a proposal of a pilgrim lodging was developed. There’s an interesting relation from this site, to the nearby cathedral and the very ancient paths that lead to the religious cult of Santiago. The shelter is a formal union of the program to the precipitated terrain itself, modelling its structure and volumes to give the appearance of modern volumes that emerge from the rough granite stone to give shelter to those that make the journey. Thus is known to be an introspective path, thou shared, the walk is lonely, and for that, the entire project was treated has was the Spartan way of living. Austere.

HIS project was developed within my Master Degree Dissertation in Oporto (2013), with the theme: requalification of numbers 74-76 of São Domingos Square, in the historical centre of the city, with the purpose of creating a new Study Centre for one of the school’s investigation committee’s. My Project Tutor was Arch. Fernando Laranjeira; the examiner: Arch. João Carreira; and my final grade: 19.

T

HE building, object of my intervention proposal is located in the northeast indent of São Domingo’s square, in the numbers 74 to 76, recessed regarding the Flores St.. Abutting the former ennobled house - Cunha Pimentel. The building 74/76 - yellow- seems not exist for itself, but it is clear that it is part of this urban complex. It is known to be one of the oldest buildings in this area- and also that there were deep changes in the building, internally and externally. Know the building has not hosted for at least the last century, any housing program or any of a kind. In fact, the building doesn’t seem to be as pure as the ones that we can see abutting in this urban front. Looks just like any OPorto house but in fact, it is not. The building is narrow and tall –ground floor + 3 – it’s implanted in the margins of the street and takes all the front of lot.

It has a traditional composition of the elevation with the demarcating spans and frames made of stone that with others and edge friezes that give him a sober and though-through layout. “The drawings of projected planning are guided mainly to expansion areas and not for the re-qualification of urban consolidated tissues” Fernando Távora, 1969 At that time, with no doubt, the urban growth was though only for new areas, thus became a paradigm, there was no intervention in no way within the city ... That formal issue wouldn’t even be raised. So, why is this sentence still so current even today? It’s known that the requalification within the urban centres, in the middle of the historical tissues is the public “agenda”. Even more, this intervention is considered necessary and also, mandatory.

It’s true, and a fact that de intervention in the historical centre is being held –sometimes well done, others not so much-; this action has already been partially carried out but still not with the necessary framework to witch the paradigm shift obliged. Instead, what we see today is an intervention being carried out such and even more wilder then the one that lead to the disqualification of the peri-urban areas of our cities. Looking today, where is the strict conservation of the identifying values and authenticity heritage that must be preserved? In a way to sustain a qualified benchmark to our pre-existing architecture of the historic city? In this disproportionate case processing, where is the gain for the city but the merely financial to some private? So, as it was said, exteriorly the building in consideration (by façade and volumetrically speaking) seems to fulfil the predicted rules of the typology, and thus combining itself with others in a coherent and balanced whole. The building is then a ‘companion piece’ as defined today by the Krakow Letter (Poland, 2000). It is a piece of a whole that defines São Domingo’s square, and even though it’s not filled with a monumental character, the whole formed by this block as acquired trough out time, a cultural significance in a vast process of ongoing evolution and changes.

Thus, I stand with the knowledge that if there is the need to look up for new ways to inhabit buildings, it should be done. But above all that, I’m interested in an adaptation that can respect the compatibility of this building with the square. It’s in my best interest to regard the structural and relevant details of the volume and spatial character – to regard all that giving a new purpose for the building. During the study of the building i realized the possible advantage of the curved walls. Of course the make a traditionally orthogonal definition very difficult, but yet, they allows to guide a certain space in a longitudinal free of obstacles kind of way. It seemed important that first impression of two slightly curved plans, non-concentric, emphasize the speed of a glimpse when travelling along all the interior space. The northern wall comes inside the building from the outside and the southern wall, of a smoother curve, seems to go out into the enlightened outer space of the square. These irregularities of the place had to be elevated, not concealed. The idea: if all that were to be possible, my proposal with be, I’d imagine, simple, and more, it would allow a care and minus hampering intervention. No fragmentation, quite the contrary, to flow.

Master Architecture Degree Project

This course culminates in a public juried presentation of the project, consisting in two major documents, a thesis and the concretion of all the drawing elements that underlie. Project: Re-qualification of a unoccupied building in the historical centre of Oporto, for the purpose of holding a study & development centre in the name of Arnaldo AraĂşjo, theoretical architect.
