The Hat As you may have noticed from time to time I have discussed my golfing activities. Well last weekend was another day to forget. It rained fairly incessantly and fairly hard. I was suitably attired and the only thing lacking, I suppose, was a waterproof hat. I do have a long-nebbed golfing cap which cost about £200 but there was a set of golf clubs attached suitably emblazoned with the golf club maker's name and in a bright yellow. Doesn't offer much protection from the rain but it keeps my specs dry. Upon taking it home, it became embroiled with all the other washing and got lost. It didn't really get lost, it was misplaced. I lose things, my wife misplaces them, ie misplaces my things. And because the weather was looking inclement for the rest of the year I thought I had better go and get another one. I went into a local massive Boundary Mill, because they sell everything, and alighted upon a lovely young sales assistant who pointed me in the direction of a Tog 24 cap. I thought that'll do, until I saw the price. It was £20.00 reduced in stages from £40.00. On the little ticket it said Walking Cap; now there's a thing. If it had said Golfing Cap I might have been persuaded to spend all that money. As it was I didn't. I went in the Marks & Spencer Outlet and bought a perfect one for £2.50 and then immediately put it into the cupboard with all the others I don't wear, but what a bargain.

OT1 ALMOST MATCHING A very similar tone to Depleted, this cloth is available in a plain taffeta but this time the figuring that a normal taffeta has; not exactly the same colour but it's really is as near as makes no difference. This is 60” wide and is £5.75 per metre.

beautiful fabrics. You won't go wrong with either of these. Both £4.00 per metre.

OT4 A RUSH OF BLOOD

A couple of sample rolls of a poly/wool bold check fabric. I don't want to use the word tartan but it is that sort of check in red, yellow and black check. It is bold. It will make wonderful blankets for your trips out in the horseless carriage in the coming winter or failing that something to wrap up in when the power goes off. You don't need to restrict yourself, make a cape, skirt or trousers. All to be admired. 60 inches wide. £6.00 per metre.

This fabric is a very similar cloth to the Moon River cloth in that it is made of viscose and silk with the same weave pattern but a different print. This is basically in white and many shades of pink in the stripes with darker crimson/cerise floral pattern with the addition of lilac. It's all fairly heavily disguised within the overall context of the weave which has many different thicknesses of yarn in the weft whilst the warp is all one colour which is white. Will look good on its own but I think it might look even better if worn as a layered article on top of something white. 60” wide at least, wonderful cloth. £6.00 per metre.

OT3 AND ANOTHER THING

OT5 A TIME AND A PLACE

Variety is the spice of life and no two cloths could be much further apart than the last ones and these. 60 in wide, lightweight and drapey, polyester fabrics in dark navy. a) Plain very fine hopsack weave cloth b) Crepe, not as fine but it still has a good drape From an impeccable source, good looking, easy care,

I don't suppose this is the right time or place to be talking about a seriously hefty woollen fabric either but we have had in the past a cloth called Revenge First which is an enormously strong, powerful, wonderful crepe in a dark lilac and we have managed to get a bit more. I think this may be the last of it, but if we have some luck it may not be; one of

the best woollen cloths you are ever likely to get hold of. If you are doing the London to Brighton run in an open-topped Oldsmobile this is the cloth to wrap round you, to keep the rain out, never mind the cold. 60 in wide £7.00 per metre.

OT6 ATONEMENT Something akin to a rash is this cloth we had before and got again. A cloth to adorn yourself when riding in the horseless carriage on your way to some outdoor frivolity in the early autumn mists. 60” wide poly wool jacketing in navy blue with a very feint “Black Watch” tartan check. A beautiful Yorkshire made cloth with a great deal of presence. £6.50 per metre.

Samples In the last year we have had to change our sampling charges which we have advised of in our last few catalogues as presently it is impossible for us to offer a completely free sampling service. We wish we could but unfortunately it is just not possible for us to do so. We do, however offer 5 samples free of charge. Please send us the reference number and name of the fabric you want plus the following depending on your requirements. Where there are a number of items under a reference please specify your preference; a, b, c etc. a) 1 - 5 samples, Please post your request and include a SAE. b) 6 - 10 samples £2.50 (Non refundable) c) 11 - 25 samples £5.00 (Non refundable) You can also view all of our fabrics at www.croftmill.co.uk

OT9 A VERY DIFFERENT BLUE I am sure I must have seen this particular shade of blue in my lifetime but I can't really say that is true. It is neither fishing nor mending nets; it's neither pale nor dark nor air force nor kingfisher. I suppose it might be leaning, yes it is leaning towards a kingfisher blue. Another softly finished cotton trousering with a fine twill weave and as I say it's a very different colour. £6.00 per metre 60in wide.

OT10 A VERY PECULIAR PRACTICE Somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind, or even my imagination, we have had this cloth before or one very similar to it. It is 60“ wide and made of cotton, viscose and polyester. It's in an all-over bouquet floral print, and I do mean all-over, every inch of it is covered in flowers and they range from white through to very dark pink with greens, mustard, yellow, lilac, lavender and a little bit of gold thrown in. You may have seen this in jackets; you may have also seen it in skirts. I've seen it in both, I know I have. It has a lovely hand, looks a million dollars and is £6.50 per metre.

OT11 BABY TOWELLING 60 in wide fine polyester baby towelling in cream. Beautiful babygro garments will surely be the result of your endeavours with this fabric. £3.00 per metre.

OT12 BARGAIN BALES We only have 15 Bargain Bales and whilst they may not be a bale in the true sense of the word, they are a bargain. Lengths are 1 2½ metres of a variety of cloths from cotton to poly-cotton to coatings, No choice but you will get a selection of lengths totalling 10-12 metres whose catalogue value would be up to £60.00. Due to massive demand we are sorry but we can only allocate one bale per customer with a minimum fabric order of £25.00 excluding P&P. £15.00 a bale.

OT7 AUGUSTA 60 in wide suiting in two quite different shades of green, both of which can be seen at the Masters in April. a) A medium weight 100% wool serge in a darkish emerald green b) A lightweight fine herringbone weave 'worsted' suiting 55% wool / 45% polyester in kingfisher/light green Both from a very good maker and are £7.50 per metre.

OT8 AUTUMN TWEED 60 in wide. This is a lovely loose woven tweed made from 70% Acrylic, 15% Wool and 15% Polyester. In beautiful maroons with a hint of rust and black, this will be super for skirts and jackets for the winter and a crisp Spring. Similar to the one we had before but this has more damson tones. £6.00 per metre.

OT13 BATON BLEU (WATER CANNON) 60” wide, 60% wool/40% polyester navy blue cavalry twill suiting of a nature to combat the perils of the sea or even water cannon. In old money it is a 12/14 oz cloth which has a light shower proofing which doesn't affect the handle one iota. Magnificent. £8.50 per metre.

OT14 BATTLESHIP 60 in wide finely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can't believe it's entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour. £5.00 per metre.

OT15 BEAUJOLAIS I read in the Daily Telegraph recently that we, as a nation apparently, are still confused about wine. Don't let this happen to you. It's either white or red and generally comes

Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

in a bottle. Open, pour, drink. What's confusing? By the same token there is nothing confusing about this 60” wide cloth. A light wine coloured poly wool lightweight gabardine from the same mill that produced the Treacle Mine cloth. A decent trouser weight, a wonderful colour and a fabulous hand. £7.50 per metre.

Sherwood green, almost a Robin Hood green, with an all over but not too dense ribbon embroidery. The ribbon is made of shiny yarn with flowers and bows and the whole thing stands proud of the base cloth. What came into my mind was that it has something of a Victorian or perhaps a bit of a Moll Flanders feel. If you are into period articles this is a corker. £7.50 per metre.

OT16 BLEU You may remember some time ago we had a 60 in wide, rather pretty dark navy lightly brushed, soft cotton with a little bit of lycra, twill with an all-over tiny white leaf and spot print. Having been told that there wasn't any more another roll has been acquired. A lovely fabric for little girls' dresses or dungarees or even for bigger girls. £5.00 per metre.

OT17 BRITISH WOOLLEN SUITING CHALKSTRIPE 60" wide. Not quite black plain weave cloth but with the nearest hint of a chalk stripe at the same sort of intervals, soft hand probably 8/10 oz in weight so a substantial cloth. £12.00 per metre.

OT23 CARLUCCIO 60 in wide poly/wool medium weight suiting in delicious shade of taupe/mushroom with a texture in the hand that makes it just that little bit different even though it is a plain weave it does have some weave interest. £6.50 per metre.

OT24 CHAMBRAY D'HOTE A super fine 60“ wide 100% cotton chambray in beige. Not a very pale beige as the last one we had, a little bit darker than that but as it's made up of mostly white with brown yarns, it still has to be described as pale beige. Tons of very fine yarn in it. £4.50 per metre.

OT25 CHANGEANT LINING

Traditional 5 hole design Broderie Anglaise in white or cream. 45in wide; £4.95 per metre.

58/60 inch wide viscose acetate lining using different coloured warp and weft yarns giving a shot look only available in Peppercorn - two shades of ginger yarn. £4.00 per metre.

OT19 BUCKET'S GOT A HOLE IN IT

OT26 CHECK CHINOS

60” wide, cream poly cotton shirting with a pattern hole design. The holes are quite tiny with four oblong holes surrounding a tiny circular pin-prick hole. Well you have to do something in your spare time, haven't you? Another cloth from this fairly highfalutin fashion place which might look awfully attractive over a red flannel liberty bodice. £4.50 per metre.

Then we have two Check Chinos. 60 inch wide very fine cotton chino in a light Prince of Wales check in a) Grey b) Brown, a pale brown but not beige Beautifully made both £5.60 per metre.

OT18 BRODERIE ANGLAISE

OT20 BURGUNDY BOUCLÉ 60 in wide wool/polyester/acrylic silk suiting in shades of burgundy with beige, cream and black and grey yarns in the tweed weave. £6.50 per metre.

OT27 CHEF 60 in wide poly/cotton twill in a 1 inch square check in the blue and white. This is probably of the 6/7 ounce weight which is trouser/apron/jacketing weight. £4.50 per metre.

OT28 CHINO OT21BWHNA 60 in wide fabulous herringbone weave, cotton trousering. They has been very lightly gone over to give a wonderful hand and very good drape; another trousering from Gurteen, whose trousers can cost over £100 a pair. a) very dark brown b) very dark navy blue £6.00 per metre.

OT22 CAPTAIN CORELLI This is something we certainly haven't seen at Croft Mill in my time. 56 in wide, a lightly stretch velvet, in a colour I would describe as

The term chino is a bastardisation of the word China used by American troops returning from the Philippines with their military trousers which were made in China. So chinos were born; lightweight cotton trousers, worn during the second world war and to save fabric during the world war ll constraints, they had no pleats and were tapered at the bottom of the leg. Not all our cotton trouserings are light enough to fall into that category but here's what we have: a) Navy blue; 60 in wide b) Olive green; 60 in wide Then we have our heavier Gurteen cotton trousering with very light sanded finishes; all 60 in wide:

c) d) e) f)

Black Sage green Khaki Light navy with a tiny white pinstripe at one eight of an inch intervals. Not a Chinese cloth in sight. £5.60 per metre.

OT29 CHOCOLAT For some unknown reason this cloth reminds me of France, not the strife ridden troubled France of recent times but the France of the film bearing the title name. Perhaps it reminds me of Juliet Binoche or more specifically of the actress who played her daughter. It is 54in wide fine cotton needlecord in black with an all over floral print in mushroom, into the petals of which have been sewn sequins. Some in 2's some in 3's and some individual. A lovely looking cloth, beautifully soft. £5.50 per metre.

OT32 COMETH THE HOUR Whilst this might be a prelude to great things, in my case it means the hour that I need to go to bed but what better to accompany me than this rather delicious, 54“ wide, soft, mostly cotton with a bit of polyester and lycra thrown in granddad night-shirting. It is in cream with a fine herringbone pink stripe followed by a very fine dotted line pinstripe in navy blue then a light blue one then pink and the same thing repeated across the cloth at about ½ inch intervals. I understand it is going down big time (as they say) in America with the Americans for night shirts and caps, which incidentally I believe are being made here and exported to the United States. It is hardly likely they will be big sellers in Alabama but in New York city. Who knows. A truly lovely cloth. £5.00 per metre.

OT33 CONTINUUM Whilst on the subject of taffetas I might as well tell you about this rather fancy variety. On close inspection it is not as fancy as all that but nevertheless it is fancy. It is a dusky pink, lilacy purple with some black in it which sort of increases the duskiness if you will. So we have pink yarns and we have black yarns. In addition to which we then have an embroidered outline floral design in a very slightly hairy yarn and not only that we have little silver thread, tiny swirls that are supposed to look like diamonds at fairly infrequent, intervals. As far as I am aware this is a sample piece which never reached broad production stages and as a result is fairly unique. It is about 57” wide and £6.00 per metre.

OT34 CREAM LAWN OT30 CHRISTMAS FABRICS 54 in wide 100% cotton with the following Christmas prints. a) Stars - Gold stars on a red ground. b) Green 'tartan' print c) Red 'tartan' print d) Green holly, red berries on a cream ground e) Holly with cream and gold and red berries on a green ground. f) Green holly with red berries, both outlined in gold, on a red ground g) Father Christmas on a green ground h) Father Christmas on a red ground (only a few metres left) All £6.00 per metre.

58 in wide cream lawn. £4.75 per metre.

OT35 DAMASK 70" wide, 100% Egyptian cotton damask tablecloth fabric with a lovely simple ivy leaf pattern. Perfect for Christmas! a) Traditional Christmas red b) Forest Green Both are £7.50 per metre.

OT36 DOUBLE JEOPARDY 150 cm (60”) wide poly cotton chambray in blue with a gentle fine line overcheck in navy, wine, and pale orange. Super soft hand. £4.00 per metre.

OT37 DRESS SATIN OT31 CONFINEMENT Just prior to Caroline's confinement she clapped eyes on this 60 in wide cotton/Lycra/satin in a fairly acid yellow or Chartreuse as she describes it. Not for the fainthearted, it's a strong beautiful colour, but sharp. Yes, sharp is the word, very finely woven with a very silky hand. Apparently curry colours are all the rage at the moment. £5.50 per metre.

a) Some Like it Hot - a 54 in wide mushroom or even light mushroom coloured polyester satin with a not quite distressed finish, perhaps worried finish would be a better description. It lends itself to dresses I have seen on TV lately in both loose and tight figure hugging styles. Quite different in my book. b) Come Up and See Me Sometime - 60 in wide dark Brown, cotton/ lycra satin. Dull finish, fairly heavy

Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

due to the denseness of the weave. If brown is in vogue you are in luck if it isn't, be different. Both £3.00 per metre.

OT38 DUCKY 60 in wide very lightweight cotton canvas in a very, very beautiful shade of pale blue. Finely woven, on the cusp of greatness. £6.00 per metre.

OT39 EMBROIDERY 58 in wide white cotton lawn with a delicate and gentle floral embroidery in pale blue. a) blue embroidery on a white lawn b) blue embroidery on a blue lawn £6.00 per metre.

OT40 FAINT HEARTED There are a few cloths which nowt but a few folk can wear and there are others which we can all wear but we don't always have the class, do we? You and I have got it but there are many that don't. This is a cloth that we could wear. It is a Daks original, I believe. 70% wool, 30% polyester, lightweight check suiting 60” wide in what is described on the label as olive and grey. I would see it as perhaps either a very pale olive with even beige mixed with olive or two shades of grey, a paler one which is mixed with beige. I am not certain. The overall effect is very subdued, very classy and extremely elegant. Perhaps you can tell that I like it. It has a fabulous hand, doesn't appear to crease when scrunched. So all in all it is rather tasty. £7.50 per metre.

OT45 FIRE DANCE Never in all my born days have I seen a more flamboyant cloth. A 60 in wide peachskin finished, polyester blouse/dress fabric in wonderful bright hues of yellow, orange and blue. Many tones of those colours within the overall swirly, fiery, sort of peacocks' tails pattern. Come to think of it I have a shirt that I once bought in Spain that I am forbidden to wear, as my wife would say, “Why do you always have to show off”. Perhaps it's to make up for the dull person I really am. Wonderful cloth. £6.95 per metre.

OT46 FLANNEL 54 in wide 100% cotton lumberjack shirting checks, lovely cloth in blue, beige with a fine line over check in red. £4.85 per metre.

OT47 FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY 60 in wide, floaty viscose dress cloths in two lovely designs. a) White leaf design on a red ground b) A “Jacobean” floral design in pink, rust, blue, green and yellow on cream. All £5.00 per metre.

OT48 GANT A rather splendid 60 inch wide brushed cotton flannelette shirting in a plaid check, quite large plaid check it has to be said in a dark blue a rusty red, mustardy yellow and combinations of all three of these colours in the weave. It isn't a dyed fabric; it is a dyed yarn woven cloth. It would be absolutely magnificent as a lining to an anorak or as an over shirt or just as a very warm shirt indeed. £5.00 per metre.

OT41 FAIR TO MIDDLING A 60” wide poly wool acrylic mix, light bouclé cloth in a burgundy and cream ¼ inch square check. Fairly light but will suit all weathers I imagine. It's from a very good maker and is £6.00 per metre.

OT42 FINERY A fine cotton voile, 56 in wide, in off white not pure white but it is not cream. £4.00 per metre.

OT43 FINESSE 60 in wide, cotton chino with the finest of Madras stripes in brown and beige. Only when you get close to the fabric do you see the fineness of the stripe, from a couple of metres away it just looks not to be plain. From a German trouser maker, we have only 27 metres. £5.50 per metre.

OT44 FINEST QUALITY WHITE SHIRTING 60 in white finest quality poly/cotton shirting. £4.75 per metre.

OT49 GINGHAM ¼ in corded edged gingham 45 in wide, poly/cotton; a) Red b) Green c) Lilac d) Yellow e) Dark Blue f) Black g) Brown h) Pale Blue i) Pink £3.50 per metre.

OT50 GINGHAM 1 inch corded edged gingham 45 in wide, poly/cotton a) Emerald Green b) Pale Blue c) Dark Blue d) Red £3.50 per metre.

OT51 GRANDMA'S FEATHERBED Just why this should remind me of a song I remember I don't know. Perhaps a happy memory. Anyway this 57 in wide pale lemon cotton lawn has a sprawling embroidered flower and leaf design in green, brown and gold, very pretty. £6.00 per metre.

light and sadly, in some respects, ideal for the summer we never had. All are £6.50 per metre.

OT56 HENRI

I think it was Goldfinger who warned Bond that once was coincidence, twice was happenstance and three was enemy action. This cloth just happened to arrive at the same time as Faint Hearted and, well, wonderfully well they go together. They are very fine cotton chinos, one in Sandhurst Beige and two in a very pale olive which goes an absolute dream with the olive and grey wool suiting. That's put the cat amongst the pigeons somewhat hasn't it? You perhaps didn't want either and now you want both. Don't think too much about it, just go for it. Both are 60” and £5.00 per metre.

Two new 60” wide waterproof canvasses to tell you about, which I think I might just make some kind of tea-cosy type thing to put over my new non-waterproof hat. This cloth comes in two weights a) a fairly lightweight one in a lovely olive green b) a slightly heavier but not too heavy one in a brilliant red. c) as above but in burgundy. The basic fabric is polyester and the backing, or coating as I really ought to call it, isn't Goretex but it is a membrane of similar ilk. Both entirely suitable for garments or as covers or awnings or whatever else you might want to do with it in the garden, provide shelter for you gnomes. All are £5.10 per metre.

OT53 HAPPY BUNNY

OT57 HOW I WONDER TOWELLING

Another one-off piece of cloth, this time a 60” wide deepish pink cotton cheesecloth with an embroidered floral design upon it. Not embroidered as in a Broderie Anglaise but this time with a very carefully sewn swirling ribbon about ¼” wide (whatever that is in millimetres), some of it in a shiny satin and other in a dull cotton. It's not all one thing and not all the other, perhaps it is trying to suit everyone hence the political correctness of the title. You couldn't say that it was delicate but it is reasonably transparent so you would need a vest on. £5.00 per metre.

60 in wide, cotton lycra stretch, baby towelling in the palest green imaginable. £5.10 per metre.

OT52 HAPPENSTANCE

OT54 HARKING BACK Another "old" fabric that has resurfaced is this rather exquisitely Japanese made polyester habutae "silk". It is 107 cm or 42 in wide and finely seer suckered in blue and white or pink and white ¼ in wide stripe in a) blue and white b) pink and white Very much a maid of the mountains/hills are alive, sort of cloth, but in its way modern. £4.00 per metre.

OT58 IF ONLY IT WAS ICE CREAM I have gone on at some length at the dim and distant about an ice cream that used to be made by possibly the first Italians ever to live in Burnley which eventually led to a bit of a war but this particular firm, Cece's, always won the day with their silky smooth, one flavour only, vanilla ice cream. I have before me a cloth which reminds me of the silky smoothness of that ice cream. It is a peach finished polyester satin. In some respects it is something like a satin-backed crêpe but it is not a crêpe at all.. It's a finer, more flexible fabric than that and is in a shade that I would describe as a) a little bit on the plummy side of mushroom b) something on the appley side of pale olive. Flows like the Orinoco Absolutely gorgeous, 45” wide (120 cm). Both £4.00 per metre.

OT59 IF THINGS DON'T CHANGE OT55 HENLEY ANTIQUES Another 60” wide cloth with a bit of a period feel to it, Yorkshire made through and through, 55% wool, 45% polyester in a striped blazer design which reminds me (1) of Henley and (2) the chap on Antiques Roadshow that delights in wearing striped jackets. I am not sure he has one quite like this. His tend to be slightly more on the brighter side. These are subdued and come in a) grey, beige and pale blue stripe b) green, turquoise and grey stripe c) light rust, lemon and a fawny brown stripe They are all 1” wide stripes, interspersed with narrow stripes of contrasting colours. Beautifully fine and quite

6

There is a saying that if things don't change they will stay the same but I'm sure in our experience it's not the case. Not much has actually got better in terms of fabric over the years and indeed much has got worse, certainly in terms of quality, but that's not true in this case. This is another Gurteen cotton trousering, 56 inches wide. My overused adjective of wonderful applies once again here, it's 98% cotton 2% lycra flannel. That's exactly what it has the feel of, an oldfashioned wool flannel even though it is made of cotton. It is woven in dark and pale grey yarns giving a lightly marled appearance to the surface, it's about the weight of a moleskin and in fact been sanded or peached finish to give it almost a moleskin feel and it is £5.50 per metre.

OT60 IMITATION

OT64 JERSEYS - COTTON

45 inch wide imitation silk. This particular cloth is a delightfully superfine and super soft, quite shiny fabric and we have it at the present time in a rather splendid pillar-box red. £3.75 per metre.

In different weights, different widths, different colours, different texture but all beautifully made in cotton. Medium weights: a) White b) Cream c) Pale Peach d) Pale Yellow e) Pale Blue f) Cerise g) Red All at least 60” wide. All the above are £5.25 per metre. h) Black, 78” wide, £6.50 per metre.

OT61 INCY WINCEY 45 in wide printed cotton winceyette in two designs. a) A mottled pink/cerise ground with a contrasting blue simple floral pattern. b) Plain white ground with rows of small flowers in either pink or blue. The rows are within either pink or blue borders. Just to confuse there are tiny white flowers in the base fabric. Both £4.25 per metre.

OT62 IN THE SILVERY MOON 60 inch wide pure unadulterated fabulous cotton lawn in black with the faintest, absolute faintest of silvery yarn woven in a regular but not too obvious way. It is in fact only able to be seen under certain light conditions. The cloth itself has the hand of silk and is absolutely fabulous. £4.50 per metre.

OT63 IT DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER There will be those of you who bought from us, donkeys years ago it now seems, some 36 in wide cotton shirting. If memory serves me right we sold that in 10 metre bolts and maybe charged £3.00. We had 10,000 metres and it flew out, as I'm sure it would today if we could get it. This might not be that cloth but it is approaching it, woven on more modern looms. I don't think it is a young cloth, 100% cotton most likely Egyptian cotton, but it could be better than that. It is pure white with a tiny diamond dobby and has a hand of silk, it almost melts, it is that delicious. 60in wide. £6.00 per metre.

OT65 JOHN WAYNE 60 in wide, robust cotton cavalry twill trousering in Pea green with a light brushed finish which softens the cloth. Made in Portugal's best mill. £5.10 per metre.

OT66 JUMPING JEHOSOPHAT 148 cm wide firm cotton poplin in salmon pink. £5.50 per metre.

OT67 KETTLE OF FISH Standing next to this polyester crêpe is another cloth that says it is a crêpe. It is not. Someone has been duped. It is a very fine polyester hopsack dress fabric. There is only an odd 25 metres of each and again it's a very drapey, easy care, non-creasing article. a) pale blue (56” wide) b) very pale lavender/silvery grey (60” wide) Both £3.50 per metre.

OT68 LACE a) 48” wide quite heavy white polyester/lycra lace in an all-over floral design which stretches more lengthways than it does widthways but it does stretch in both direction. £5.75 per metre. b) Also a black polyester non-stretch fine lace 56” wide. £4.75 per metre. For those things you wear under things, or indeed on top, it is ideal.

OT69 LEATHERETTE 60 inch wide superior leather faux furnishing in a dark brown. £7.50 per metre.

OT70 LEAVES NOTHING TO BE DESIRED 60 in wide 100% cotton, soft corduroy in two delicious autumnal colours, a) Light wine b) Golden brown They have a sheen to the finish; it is of a decent weight, 8 whales to the inch, ie ribs to the inch. Made not far from here, but it must be said, not recently. £7.50 per metre.

OT71 LINEN TOUCH This is a 45 inch wide 100% polyester cheese cloth which boasts on the wrapper 'linen touch'. I must confess that it has a feel totally unlike polyester but obviously it will behave and will wash and wear exactly as polyester. It doesn't crease so therefore is not exactly 'linen look' fabric but it doesn't really pretend to be this is a lovely finish and well worthy of your attention £3.95 per metre, oh by the way it's in cream.

OT72 LSD 50” wide, which is a number to conjure with in cloth terms, cotton and 5% lycra denim which is about half the weight of a normal denim and is dyed in such a way as to give it, I suppose, a mottled appearance. It is made up in the traditional way of a cream weft and blue warp but the blue in the warp is darker and lighter, which is fairly clever I suppose, to give it this different appearance. Much softer than a normal denim but just as hard wearing and it's £5.50 per metre.

OT73 MERRY MEN 60 in wide fine lightweight cotton chino, in what I think is a wonderful shade of Lincoln green not to be confused with men in tights green nor indeed is it that kind of cloth. Very finely woven by the best trouser maker of its kind in Europe. £5.00 per metre.

OT74 MINSTREL 60 in wide black cotton lycra dress fabric with an all over outline floral and leaf design in white. Quite stunning. £5.50 per metre.

OT75 MIRANDA This is a 60” wide polyester crêpe which has got the finest of bouclé finishes, that is to say that some of the yarn is woven into the cloth in such a way it stands ever so slightly proud of the base cloth. To do this you have to have a fairly dense cloth even though it's still quite light and very, very drapey. I don't normally like articles like this. I think it is beautiful and I can imagine this being made in silk and you wouldn't know the difference, costing £20/m or more. a) A very pleasant shade of light dusky pink b) Creamy beige. Both £4.00 per metre.

OT7 6 MOLESKIN

OT77 MOON RIVER I think this is a cloth that Holly Golightly would wear; it is a vaguely eccentric 60“ wide viscose dress fabric in black with a whole mish mash of woven fine stripes upon which is then printed a black and pink abstract, quite large, floral pattern. It is very much another one-off effort by this designer garment maker and because it is viscose, there is a fair amount of weight in it. So it's going to hang beautifully. The stripes are horizontal which might make a difference but the print is top to bottom. It is on purpose I assure you. As a decorative shawl it's perfect; as a skirt it's perfect; as a dress I'm not so sure. It might be just a little bit too much. A glorious fabric at £6.00 per metre.

OT78 MOORCROFT Sometime ago we had a 45 in wide satin blouse cloth with a Moorcroft inspired design. This is the same design with a plummy sort of background with the growing largish floral design in blues, turquoise and beige. Very 1940's in my book. Good depth of colour. Ex Laura Ashley. £4.00 per metre.

OT79 NAU This is a 60 inch wide polyester/ viscose 'linen look' lightweight pale blue summer trousering/suiting. There are a number of articles claiming to be 'linen look'; I suppose this whilst just being another one is just a tad different. It has a slight sheen to the overall surface, is very handleable and does not crease like linen does and is a very easy care fabric. I don't think it's just another cloth but not bad at £5.00 per metre.

OT80 NEEDLECORD

We have a selection of moleskin and moleskin type cloths, some heavier than others. I will start with the heaviest. a) A sumptuous fabric in a light mushroom/ brown colour, traditional hunting shooting fishing weight. £10.00 per metre. I know that might have made you wince, but you need to see the cloth. I have, it's beautiful. We have approximately 15 metres, 60 in wide.

8

b) Not nearly so heavy, is a brown and darker brown twill weave moleskin, which I suppose looks like a fine diagonal stripe even though it isn't. You get diagonal stripes in the weaving process using different coloured yarns. Only 10 to 15 metres of this. 60 in wide. £7.50 per metre. c) An extremely dark brown in an average weight cloth of which we have about 20 metres. 60 in wide. £6.00 per metre. d) A tanny brown of which we have only 10 metres. 60 in wide. £6.00 per metre. e) A navy blue, of which we have only 10 metres. 60 in wide. £6.00 per metre. f) A scrumptious light appley green. £6.00 per metre.

54 inch wide 97% cotton/ 3% lycra black needlecord. Very good quality and made in Yorkshire. £5.50 per metre.

OT81 OLD BOOTS 60” wide emerald/bottle green canvas with a rubber backing. We only have 25 m or so of this extremely good

protective fabric. So if you need to cover something up for the winter, this could be your man. £5.00 per metre.

OT82 ON YOUR MARK Don't mention that to Usain Bolt!!! Here we have a pink, cerise pink, really good weight, pure linen dress fabric. Almost the marker pen colour I've just noticed. Lovely cloth if the colour suits. £7.50 per metre.

The squares consist of flowers, polka dots, tiny gingham check and other abstract floral patterns. There is a lot of cream in them, there are also lots of tones of the colours and they all have pink flowers in them. They really are very pretty. As Forsyth would say, I think they are my favourite. 13) Pollyanna White - tiny black floral print on a white ground 14) Pollyanna Black - tiny black floral print on a white ground 15) Rosas 45 in wide cotton poplin in white with a vibrant colourful rose design in red with green. Crisp as a nine bob note. 16) Dolly - Country fresh, multi-coloured floral print on cream 17) Tammy - Tiny multi strawberry and floral print on cream All these poplins are beautifully woven and a lovely hand. £6.95 per metre. 8)

OT90 PRETTY POLLY 45 in wide half decent poly/cotton cloth with the following prints: a) A pink, green, pale blue, white yellow tiny all-over

floral design on a cream ground b) Shades of blue, green and pink floral spray design on a white ground c) As above except in blue, turquoise, wine and lemon on white. All very pretty and £4.00 per metre.

OT91 PRETTY PRINT 45 in wide, 80% poly/cotton fine poplin in Blue Floral Spray Tiny mid blue floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground patterns. £3.50 per metre.

OT92 PRIMA DONNA Brace yourself Sheila, a glorious 58“ wide black polyester satin with a quite large paisley design in all the shades of purple from very pale pink to very dark purple. Of its kind, as good as it gets. £7.50 per metre.

OT93 PRIME SPOT 145 cm wide cotton lawn in dark olive with white polka dot print. £4.75 per metre.

OT94 PURE AND SIMPLE 56 in wide 100% unbleached cotton twill in a medium/heavy weight. a) Just as it is. b) With a lightly brushed finish which has the effect of softening the cloth. Both natural but have been worked and desized without taking away the wonderful smell of cotton. Both £4.95 per metre.

OT95 RED BULL 60 in wide 60% wool and 40% polyester bright red cavalry twill suiting. Born and bred in Yorkshire so quite firm and a bit awkward. £8.50 per metre.

OT96 SADIE 50 in wide, fern green, it says on the label 98% cotton 2% lycra, lightweight moleskin made up of finer yarns than all the others and brushed slightly less. Possibly more in the way of a shirting moleskin. Don't let that put you off; it is still a good weight. £5.00 per metre.

OT97 SEERSUCKER As summery as you are going to get, this 45 in wide 100% cotton seersucker which is a bit of a rarity is an 1/8 of an inch check in a) pink and white b) pale blue and white Both would look ever so pretty in a tiny dress with puff sleeves. £5.60 per metre.

OT98 SEVERIANO 60 in wide cotton moleskin with cavalry twill weave in khaki and a very soft finish. You will gather from the title that it is Spanish £5.60 per metre.

OT99 SHEETING Not exactly like discovering a 6.2-carat diamond but in its own way just as comforting. This is 50/50 poly/cotton, is 94 in wide and we have it in three colours; a) Red b) White £5.00 per metre.

OT100 SHINE ON 44 in wide gold or silver lame. For decoration, for dress, for furnishing even. High gloss mirror finish. a) Gold b) Silver Both are £4.25 per metre.

OT101 SLIP SLIDING SATIN 45 in wide, heavy duty satin, with a fantastic sheen and a great body. If you are into theatricals this autumn and early winter, this is a cloth that will be seen at the back of any auditorium never mind the school hall. a) Emerald b) Royal Blue £3.50 per metre. Some slight Seconds at £2.00 per metre

OT102 SOFT O'ER THE MOUNTAIN Cast your mind back to when tripe and onions was a necessity and not a treat, when Saturday morning pictures was a great adventure and funny meant daft, not harmful. Well this is a cloth to remind us all of that wonderful era. It is a kind of moleskin, 100% cotton, twill weave and has been brushed both sides and is therefore incredibly soft, any colour you like as long as it's olive. If you don't buy it I'll take it home and my wife can make trousers for me. I'll have enough to last a lifetime; in fact I think one pair will last a lifetime. Fabulous cloth 60 in wide, £6.50 per metre.

OT103 SOFT OPTION 60 in wide cotton moleskin, in a mixture of navy blue and grey yarns. The back of the cloth looks to be all blue but the face where it has been raised is highlighted with grey in it, so it is a grey/ blue cloth at the end of it all. A soft hand and good weight but not too heavy, a bit of a corker. £6.00 per metre.

OT104 SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND 52 in wide cotton/lycra shirting in a stripe design, indeed it is quite a bold stripe incorporating the colours pink, turquoise, green, purple and other shades of greens and pinks thrown

in. The weave is an intricate rope stitch design, there is a lot going on in the fabric and in addition it stretches. Something I'm sure you will want to get your teeth into. Caroline does not like it particularly, she thinks I'm mad but you have been in touch with my mad side before haven't you. Super cloth beautifully made. £4.50 per metre.

OT105 SOMETHING STIRRING Where do I begin? First of all it is 57” wide, secondly it's made of a mixture of polyester, viscose and a little bit of something else with which I am unfamiliar so sadly you too will have to remain unfamiliar but it's not life-threatening or anything like that, it's quite likely to be acrylic but it is only a small amount. The cloth itself is a big plaid check; the basic colours are burnt orange, damson, black and beige with other little bits of highlights in a shinier yarn in silver and then there is a woven chenille raised fine stripe in a grey/green. One of these cloths they don't make a great deal of and perhaps you can understand why. I think it will make wonderful jackets, possibly light furnishings but it wasn't made for that. It is an apparel fabric and it is £5.00 per metre.

OT106 SPICE OF LIFE 60 in wide cotton madras stripe trousering in white/cerise pink. A very good cloth woven just down the road from here a fair while ago by Carrington Viyella. £5.50 per metre.

OT107 SPRINGSTEEN A 56” wide, black polyester polyviscose satin with an embroidered, almost fleur-de-lys sort of design, in rows running down the cloth in between which are embossed chained stitched stripes. Having gone through all that it actually isn't embossed; it's woven which makes it fairly clever as they create the embossed look in the weave. Very drapey, very evening, Captain's dinner sort of cloth. £5.25 per metre.

OT108 ST TRINIAN'S 60” wide, quite splendid, poly viscose trousering. Not too exciting but very good cloths. Great for uniforms. Both £4.50 per metre. a) School grey b) Light navy

OT109 STILL TO COME This is phrase used now in every programme on television; it doesn't matter whether it's a bit of a variety of Carry On or the news or a report on the war in Afghanistan. There is still to come on this programme thrown in so I am throwing this one in whilst I now sneak off in some atrocious weather to play golf in a charity tournament. I have been doing it with the same two people, pretty much for the last 15 years and we haven't come close to winning not that it matters

because anything you win goes into the charity pot anyway but we haven't had the pleasure. Perhaps today is the day, maybe the weather being as bad as it is, the rest won't turn up. See you on the morrow.

quite something, just as well Carmen is a strong lass. It's a tad under width at 57 in wide but I am sure that's enough to do what you need. £6.00 per metre.

OT114 THE LAND OF THE BONG TREE Well here we are, safe and sound after a battering from the elements. It had to go on; it was a charity event and, whilst some didn't turn up, sadly it wasn't enough and we didn't win. I did win a minor prize however for some insignificant achievement but all in all an enjoyable afternoon and evening. So where were we? Oh yes I was about to describe this particular cloth to you. Words failed me last evening but now I'm back on track. Black velvet (in this instance I am not referring to the Guinness and champagne drink) or really even to a black velvet cloth which at first glance I thought this was but it isn't. It is a 100% cotton trousering which has a velvet finish, beautifully soft but only very lightly brushed as opposed to raised. Really is outstanding. 60 in wide and £6.00 per metre.

T'is many a year since I was lost in the land of the Bong tree and if memory serves me right it was cloth that saved me, saved me from going barmy that is, because as we all know there are no aeroplanes or boats going to the land of the Bong tree. It was there that I made myself a raft from this finely sculptured heavy weight cotton canvas, almost a double cloth in the way that it is woven. Aside from the fact that it would sink when exposed to water for too long I knew that I could make it nearly to the nearest land before having to swim like mad. What is this cloth I hear you say, it is 60 in wide very heavy, due to the amount of yarn and the fineness of the weave, cotton canvas, in a very pale stone colour. A cloth that only comes along once every Preston Guild. I am sure if you were able to do log rolling this would be as good as a tree trunk. £6.00 per metre.

OT110 STRIPED TAFFETA I am not absolutely certain that this cloth isn't a lining, if it's a lining it's a stormer, if it's for skirts, waistcoats, bodices, that type of thing, it's extremely good. Basically it is a grey/ rust/ green stripe with finer grey/rust/silver stripes bordering the wider three main coloured stripes. Does that make sense? Or have I been wasting my time. It is a great cloth, a nice hand. 100% polyester. 60 in wide, £4.50 per metre.

OT111 SURREY WITH A FRINGE ON TOP 140 cm wide white cotton lawn with an embroidered 'bobble' weave upon which is a pink, cerise, brown abstract floral print. Lovely finish. £6.00 per metre.

OT112 TALKING TO TREES I know that talking to anything helps and if there is nothing else available talk to yourself. This pure new wool suiting is a 60 in wide brown and black, Prince of Wales check with the faintest of over-checks in a darkish blue. The over-check takes some finding but if you stand back from the cloth you can see it's there. Supreme cloth. £10.00 per metre.

OT115 THE LINEN COLLECTION a) A mid grey, light almost herringbone weave pure linen cloth with the finest of pin stripes in white or even a paler grey at ½ inch intervals. b) A heathery coloured cloth with a very faint over check in pale blue. There are actually quite a lot of different coloured yarns in the make up of this but the overall effect is heathery. c) Navy blue twill weave, lightweight suiting in navy blue with a pin stripe and dot chalk stripe in pale blue, red and white, ie, three separate stripes. d) Pale air force blue suiting made up of blue and white yarns with a muted turquoise and pink woven overcheck. e) Light navy zig zag weave with navy and white yarns with a navy pale blue windowpane check. All these cloths have a soft hand and will obviously wear as linen wears, which is something you either love or hate but they do represent as good a lot of linens as I have seen and as you know I have been in this game for quite some time. All 60 in wide £8.50 per metre.

OT116 THE SPICE OF LIFE OT113 THE BOURNE CONTINGENCY Very much a cloth of its ilk, one that I have seen at times in the past made into things, never just as cloth. Anyway here it is, perhaps the most closely woven fabric you are ever likely to see, and it is this for the most part, which gives it its waterproofness. Don't tell me that's not a proper word I know it isn't. Made from polyester, it is breathable, windproof and waterproof and it comes in the one colour you might have guessed, black. It was on a 200 metre roll which apparently needed a high-powered forklift truck to move it. We have it in 25 metre rolls and believe me they are

12

Four 60 in wide or thereabouts, woven check cloths. a) A plain weave, the checks are in shades and tones of cream, green and mustard with fine line over-checks in all these colours plus a pale blue. A poly/wool fabric made entirely in Yorkshire, with a lovely silky soft but still firm hand. £10.00 per metre. b) An ultra fine “tropical” weight poly/wool plain weave, blouse/ shirting, or a posh lining for jackets. Maybe even a lightweight jacket with a lining. It is in shades of beige, taupe, pale yellow with a fine line overcheck in black, white and orange. £6.00 per metre.

Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

c) Poly/cotton “hoe down” checked seersucker. Wonderfully colourful in blues, red, turquoise, beige and green. £5.00 per metre. d) A cotton rich poly/cotton in a sort of lumberjack/viyella check in green and taupe with blue and red in the secondary check. £5.00 per metre.

OT117 THE YOUNG ONES 56 in wide soft lightly brushed cotton in navy blue with an all over novelty print which has amongst other things, Stief like teddy bears, rocking horses, tiny little aeroplanes, prams, flowers, children on bicycles, old fashioned stuffed toys on scooters motor bikes musical instruments. All of these things I omitted to tell you about when it was called 'When we go down into the Woods'. I always thought it was nice but having had another look I think it is quite wonderful. The background is navy blue; other colours are blues, fawns, beiges pinks, greens, a gamut of colour. £4.50 per metre.

OT118 TINKER TAILOR 60 in wide viscose/acetate “tailors linings” as follows; a) Silvery grey with a tiny all over dobby spot pattern in silver. b) Black with a black satin all over polka dot design. c) Black with a tiny Morse code design. Dot, dash and tiny arrows. d) Black with an all over printed tiny pink polka dot pattern e) Dusky pink with a tiny all over dobby design. f) Pale pink with an all over tiny dobby design. g) Pale cream with all over smallish leaf and flower pattern. There is not a lot of any of them but as they go we will hope to replace them with something of similar interest and in similar colours. That's our endeavour anyway. All at £4.25 per metre.

OT120 TREACLE MINES In a far off land, well not too far actually, it's probably only 3 miles from where I live, are the Sabden Treacle Mines. Totally inaccessible of course but an ideal spot for a picnic. It actually has nothing to do with treacle or mines; it's just a gently sloping old quarry which some wise old sage, in the absence of any knowledge, christened Treacle Mines and that would be, to sound right, would have to be spelled Traykel. I shall have to go and look, more to see if it is still there and has not been filled in and indeed if anyone else has had as good a time as we used to have all those years ago. Well what brought all this on were these cloths, pretty much from yesteryear, although not that old it has to be said, which is a poly wool school wear possibly only made into short trousers, which I remember wearing all year round and having the chapped rings round my legs from my wellies. We couldn't afford socks you see. These two cloths are 60” wide; very similar in weight, similar in texture, 45% wool, 55% Terylene which gives you an indication of the pedigree and in fact was made by a very famous Yorkshire mill. Both £4.50 per metre. a) one of them is described as black but I would describe it as very dark grey b) the other one clerical grey

Well after another day of torrential rain it's got to somewhere around tea-time and the sun has come out. Won't be able to do any gardening, won't be able to get on the golf course so I might as well stay here and contemplate my navel and talk to you.

OT121 TROOPING A COLOUR 145 cm wide cotton lawn with a vivid brown, black, white, orange and yellow 'African' print. £6.00 per metre.

OT122 TUTTI FRUITTI OT119 TRACK SUITING I know these days the old fashioned heavy knitted cotton track suiting is pretty much a thing of the past and almost impossible to get hold of now, 1 because of the price of cotton and 2 because of the weight of the cloth. If you go jogging in the rain in that fabric it would be like heading an old fashioned leather football with the laces in it which as the game wore on became sodden and required the neck muscles of a fighting bull to head the ball home. No, this is a polyester version, which is very light, in a rib pattern and the colours are a) Black b) Pale grey c) Bottle green All £3.00 per metre. All 60 in wide.

This cloth harks back a little to the Teddy boy era. Why that came to mind I'm not sure except that it's a cloth that was of its kind and was about in that era. It is a Bedford cord cotton; I can't be certain what it was intended to be made into because it is in three magnificent colours a) Bright yellow b) Lime green A very strong cloth, though not too heavy perhaps. It will make summer shorts or even a little jacket and I can see this being hard wearing enough to cover chairs or curtains for a child's room. A cloth to gladden the heart. 60 in wide. £5.50 per metre.

OT123 TWEEDY 60 in wide poly/wool/viscose mix fine tweed weave cloth in heathery tones of green, mustard, beige, orange and black. A light suiting weight with a fairly soft hand. £6.50 per metre.

OT124 TWO T'S It's always a good time to have good stuff even if it is a bit unseasonal. Two rather tasty green cotton trouserings have found their way into my keeping. There's too much for me so I want you to have some. Both with a lovely soft hand. a) 60 in wide, 2% Elastane, Pale apple green, lightly sanded twill in a medium weight. b) 63 in Sage green Bedford cord which has had the same treatment. Both £6.50 per metre.

OT125 UNANNOUNCED This cloth arrived without so much as a by your leave all the way from Magee so you would have thought it would have rung first. A fine medium weight black wool/polyester suiting with a fine diagonal weave pattern. Very crease resistant with a lovely hand. £7.00 per metre.

OT126 UTTERLY BUTTERY 60 in wide at least. A poly/wool suiting in a plaid design made up of a green and navy blue check, which would normally be the basic check similar to the Black Watch tartan and then with a woven over-check in pale blue and red. The overcheck is made of fine lines, a double fine line in the case of pale blue and a single in the case of the red. The red is not a bright red. A beautifully soft cloth with excellent wearing properties. £7.50 per metre.

OT127 VAN DELDEN 60 in wide poly/cotton, this time in a darker beige which because of the fineness in the weave and the finest coatings is actually water repellent so this makes excellent summer walking or anorak gear, very light weight: The very best Van Delden in Holland - the very best, you would pay £60+ if you bought Rohan or Northface trousers in this. £4.50 per metre.

overpowering. One of the leaves “bursts” open with velour inside. This is awfully clever and a classy cloth. £5.60 per metre.

OT130 VW Just as we thought summer had gone for ever we got a little burst and so it seems appropriate to start with a little burst of a cloth, a 60” wide almost, I lie it is 57” wide, 100% Irish linen with a quite large bohemian floral print in black on a lemon, cream and dark shades of green background with turquoise, blue and other little bits of colour thrown in. Who am I to say Vivien Westwood as an ordinary lad from Lancashire? But it is rather flamboyant and very striking. £7.50 per metre.

OT131 WAFFLE 60” wide waffle weave cotton rich poly/cotton shirting in white. Heavy enough, because of the weave, to make shorts or perhaps trousers from a blast from the past. £4.00 per metre. There is a touch of the Rita Hayworth about this cloth; it has the hand, almost, of a soft cotton and will drape beautifully and doesn't crease. It is in fact a loosely woven polyester and comes in a) Black ground b) White ground Both have a large and extremely colourful floral print in red, yellow, blue and green. Gerumptulous. £5.00 per metre. 60 in wide.

Due to our new location it is not possible for large groups to visit, however, if only a few want to come we welcome you but please call us to make an appointment.
