He who stands tall He who stands tall will certainly see more. I used to actually be taller than I am now so it is some indication of my age as I am shrinking, however it does help with the short putts because you are nearer the ground. That's actually rubbish, nothing improves with age. I will get round to talking about cloth in due course but for the moment I'm enjoying talking to you, as I have done for what seems to be donkeys years. Okay, I can tell you are fed up. Here we go item number one. Happy New Year! JN1 And Forsakeing all Others If you never buy another cloth I urge you to buy this. It is a 60in wide rather splendid black wool melton coating of a quality of a bygone era. Speaking of which is probably where I came in. I am from that bygone era, when men were men, looms were looms and picking sticks gave you a good clout if you didn't pay attention; £12.50 per metre. JN2 A love Affair Don't go to a wedding in this rather splendid and very different tie-dyed cotton needlecord. a) Blues, pink, orangey red and variations of those colours. b) Cream, rust, orange and black. Very randomly dyed to fabulous effect. 58 inches wide; £6.90 per metre.
JN3 A Better Class Maybe just different but these linings have a satin finish and are made of good old fashioned acetate. Beautifully soft and really quite classy. a) Chocolate b) Navy c) Emerald d) Charcoal Grey. 56 inches wide; £3.50 per metre. JN4 A Tale of Two Linens From Ireland come two pale linen fabrics as different as chalk and cheese. a) A pale blue shirting; 60 inches wide and very elegant; £6.00 per metre. b) We have this heavy weight big plaid check in lots of autumnal tones of green, brown, pale orange, beige all beautifully interwoven. More than likely this is a furniture cloth and absolutely stunning; 60 inches wide; £7.50 per metre.
JN5 Autumn Tweed 60in wide. This is a lovely loose woven tweed made from 70% Acrylic, 15% Wool and 15% Polyester. In beautiful maroons with a hint of rust and black, this will be super for skirts and jackets for the winter and a crisp Spring. £5.60 per metre. JN6 A Little Less for Your Money - Lilac This is a 45in wide, and therefore not newly made, nice chunky
6 wale corduroy, 100% cotton. It comes in a delicate shade of pale lilac and is £3.60 per mtr.
JN7 Always Look on the Bright Side A couple of sample rolls of a poly/wool bold check fabric. I don't want to use the word tartan but it is that sort of check. a) Red - Red, yellow and black check. b) Navy - Turquoise, navy and red check. Each of the coloured yarns criss-crosses and they are then overlaid by a big white square over check. They are bold. They will make wonderful blankets for your trips out in the horseless carriage in the coming winter or failing that something to wrap up in when the power goes off. You don't need to restrict yourself, make a cape, skirt or trousers. All to be admired. 60 inches wide; £6.00 per metre.
JN8 A little Something for the Weekend 54in wide cotton/lycra shirting in a stripe design, indeed it is quite a bold stripe incorporating the colours pink, turquoise, green, purple and other shades of greens and pinks thrown in. The weave is an intricate rope stitch design, there is a lot going on in the fabric and in addition it stretches. Something I'm sure you will want to get your teeth into. Caroline does not like it particularly, she thinks I'm mad but you have been in touch with my mad side before haven't you. Super cloth beautifully made. £4.25 per metre.
JN9 A Suiting 60in wide poly/wool suiting, originally made for a famous high street store The cloth did at one time have a contrasting cloth to go with it but not any more. A fine half inch sort of herringbone weave, without actually having the herringbone. It has different patterns which look herringboneish from afar but not close to. It comes in a colour that might be described as pale mauve. It's on its own and needs a new home. A very nice cloth beautifully woven. £4.00 per metre. JN10 Ahoy There 60in wide 1in wide white/coloured striped twill on identical cloth to that in item 'Chef'. a) Emerald Green and White and b) Red and White They are both very striking fabrics and are £4.50 per metre.

£3.00 per metre.
polyester, 40% viscose in a dull navy blue. 60in wide; £3.50 per metre.
JN12 Burnout 58 inch wide poly/ cotton fabric which
JN19 Broderie Anglaise Traditional 3 hole design
has had treatment known in the trade as burnout where quite a lot of the pattern is created by applying chemicals in a particular way that removes almost part of the cloth leaving what in essence is a shadow pattern. This particular one is a trellis, it is in white and has a very delicate floral pattern in mustards, beiges, pale turquoise and the rest is white. Very pretty, not sure how practical but a very pretty cloth. Nice feel with a good hand, £4.75 per metre.
Broderie Anglaise in white or cream. 45in wide; £4.00 per metre.
JN11 Ace of Spades 54in wide black polyester chiffon
JN20 Changeant Linings 58/60 inch wide viscose
Dear Croft Millers
acetate linings using different coloured warp and weft yarns giving a shot look. a) Peppercorn - two shades of ginger yarn. b) Olive - Using pale blue and dark gold yarn. c) Gold - Using pale gold and pale blue yarn. d) Deep Pink - Using black and very dark pink yarns. All £3.50 per metre.
We always love hearing your stories about what you are making with our fabrics. Please keep letting us know and please don't forget to let us know if you don't mind sharing your stories or pictures as we would love to post them on the website. Many Thanks, Caroline.
JN21 Cavalry Twill 60in wide pure new wool cavalry twill suiting in clerical grey with the made in England woven selvedge. Caroline was going to make a big fuss of that, along with the other woollens, which were also made in England because they are all totally wonderful. £12.50 per metre.
JN13 British Wool Suitings Good things come in small packages. We have two beautiful Yorkshire made cloths that fit the bill. a) Pinstripe - Grey not too dark, not too pale, very fine, almost herringbone weave pattern with a fine dotted pinstripe at approximately 1/2in intervals maybe a tad wider. b) Chalk Stripe - Much darker grey, not quite black, plain weave cloth with the merest hint of a chalk stripe at the same sort of intervals as the first. They both have a soft hand probably 8 to 10oz in weight, so it is a substantial winter weight cloth. Both 60 inches wide; £12.00 per metre.
JN14 Brief Stretch 54in wide, cotton/ lycra lightweight denim. We thought we would not have anymore of this cloth but an odd 50mtrs has turned up from where we always got it. It will definitely be the last. A fairly traditional denim blue and a lovely cloth. £4.50 per metre. JN15 Black Satin 58in wide (145cm) luxurious black polyester satin. Ideal for those nights in with your crisp and stout: £4.50 per metre.
JN22 Cotton Lawns Two cotton lawns to keep you abreast of; a) I've Come Over - 54in wide beige/ very pale beige, shadow weave stripe, lawn. £2.95 per metre. b) Cream Lawn - 58in wide not as fine as the previous one, but still very fine. £4.20 per metre. JN23 Chintz 48in wide, black dress fabric with an all over medium to large floral design in pink, mustard and green. The cloth then has been calendared, which means it's squeezed between rollers and has a fluid passed along the roller to give a semi shiny chintz finish. £4.00 per metre.
JN24 Correction 50in wide, the reason for that I will explain later. This is 89% cotton 2% lycra shirting in bright baby pink. We have had this cloth before but I obviously made a bit of a mess telling you about it. It has at ½ inch intervals down the cloth a series of alternating woven satin stripes, 1 thicker, about 1/4in wide and 1 extremely fine. Not an easy cloth to weave and the reason it's only 50in wide is that the lycra is in the weft, which has pulled it in, it won't pull out again. The width is what it is, but instead of being a perfectly flat cloth it has a bit of a ripple effect. Beautifully made. £3.60 per metre. JN25 Chef 60in wide poly/cotton twill in a 1 inch square
JN16 Baby towelling 60in wide fine polyester baby velour towelling in a) White b) Cream Beautiful babygro type garments will surely be the result of your endeavours with this fabric. Both £5.00 per metre.
JN17 Battleship 60in wide finely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can't believe it's entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour. £5.00 per metre.
JN18 Back to school Hard wearing serviceable fabric, fairly ordinary but having said that very well made. 60% 2
check in the following colours: a) Red and white b) Blue and White. This is probably of the 6/7 ounce weight which is trouser/apron/jacketing weight: £4.10 per metre.
JN26 Corduroy 60in wide, 6 wale, medium weight soft cotton corduroy in navy blue £4.50 per metre. JN27 Cotton Jersey Years ago you could fall over this cloth there was so much of it produced and probably still is, but not in this country as a result of which you got T-shirts that were never in shape primarily because of the making up but also
Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk
because the cloth was rubbish. We have managed to get hold of some very nice quality cotton jersey in varying weights and widths. a) Marine Blue 60in wide b) Pinky Lilac 60in wide. c) Very pale pink 64in wide d) Pinky/ rusty almost 70in wide. e) White almost 70in wide. f) Black 60in wide. All 100% fine cotton: £4.70 per metre.
JN28 Canvas 60in wide light wine coloured, heavy cotton canvas, outdoor type fabric. One of those cloths that will improve with age, a bit like I did. £4.10 per metre. Last 20mtrs.
JN29 Diddly Um with a Difference 56 inch wide cotton lawn with an all over tie-dyed print in all manner of shades of mauve and purple with pink and green thrown in, a totally abstract design upon which is then given the blessing of a gold flake print. I mean heavens to murgatroyd why did they need to do that, probably because its Indian, I'm sure it would have been fine without the gold print but the gold print makes it exotic to say the least; £6.00 per metre. JN30 Dress satin a) Some Like it Hot - a 54in wide mushroom or even light mushroom coloured polyester satin with a not quite distressed finish, perhaps worried finish would be a better description. It lends itself to dresses I have seen on T.V. lately in both loose and tight figure hugging styles. Quite different in my book. £4.50 per metre. b) Come Up and See Me Sometime - 60in wide dark Brown, cotton/ lycra satin. Dull finish, fairly heavy due to the denseness of the weave. If brown is in vogue you are in luck if it isn't, be different. £4.50 per metre.
JN31 Depardieu A wonderful 60in wide, mercerised cotton knitted jersey in navy blue with a fine white horizontal stripe at 1/2in intervals, onions and berets come to mind as well as the heavy joweled French actor. More likely to have gone into children's articles where the number of stripes and the effects on the eyes is lessened, hence the soft hand and good quality. £4.50 per metre.
JN32 Down Sizing 45in wide, stone coloured poly/ cotton/ lycra lightweight suiting with a bit of an orange peely finish made to use in lightweight travel/ safari type clothing. It has an element of water repellence about it and because of its width is only £2.50 per metre. Great for summer walking gear. JN33 Dress Velvet 60in wide 100% cotton very fine dress velvet with a silky sheen finish, the colour of which is a very expensive looking gold. Now slight seconds remain; £3.00 per metre. JN34 Escape Dreaming of holidays, warm weather holidays in particular isn't daft, it's therapeutic. Thinking of what to cover up is more of a problem, however, don't worry, use our beautifully made printed cotton voile, light as a feather in an all over criss-cross print in white on a blood orange background
with a polka dot print in burgundy in-between the crisscrossing. Very hard cloth to get as much dye on as this has. Fabulous! 60 inches wide; £4.50 per metre.

JN35 Finery Two extremely fine cotton fabrics which are both 100% cotton. a) Voile - 56in wide off white not pure white but it is not cream. b) Pink Lawn - 60in wide almost as fine as the voile but more yarn in it and this is in very pale pink. Both £4.00 per metre. JN36 Finest Quality White Shirting 60in white finest quality poly/cotton shirting. £3.50 per metre.
J N 37 Fo r S o m e t h i n g C o m p l e t e ly Different 1. 54 inch wide acrylic nylon and wool loosely knitted. Well, I would suggest you make scarves out of it. I don't believe you are going to do that as it is 54 inches wide and will be quite a big scarf. Obviously made to make tops out of, it's very delicate, very soft and comes in either; a) Dark brown and black with gold lurex thread. b) Light Brown - a lighter brown some black and white with the same lurex thread and the same loose knit. It feels lovely against the skin, a cuddly sort of fabric and it's an experiment. As far as I am concerned I have seen the same sort of thing in scarves but I haven't seen it in anything else, perhaps Caroline has. It is £4.50 per metre. Worth a try! 2. Cherry - not quite on the same front is this red plain tassel, it's cherry red, it's knitted, it's 100% polyester and it has this very loose stringy tassely appearance which when held up to the light is pretty much see through so it obviously needs a lining. This is another little bit of a scarf like cuddly fabric; 56 inches wide and is £4.50 per metre. Super Activity - It's now early January and there is much going on in the yard outside, in fact we appear to be the only people that are not moving, the double glazing place has gone and an engineering place has moved in over there from a unit just next

to us. The hand car wash place is moving two doors away where it is now going to be a replacement tyre operation and car servicing business too. It is obviously very exciting for them; it is just a bit of a puzzle to me as I have to wait until it all stops otherwise I should probably get dizzy.
Bags Our paper bags - that is to say the paper bags in which we pack our cloth - have caused some people anxiety because of what it says on the outside. When they come to us they are brand new bags that have not been used by the people who should have used them in the first place.
JN44 Horse Whisperer 60 inch wide superfine cotton lawn and with a very delicate and faint Prince of Wales type of check. The background is slightly off white and the colours making up the check are pale blue and different shades of beige, a bit too much of the same you might think but on the other hand it's awfully delicate and is extremely well made. Summer nightdresses, sarongs type garments or just a lightweight shirt all come to mind. A beautiful cloth; £5.00 per metre. JN45 Hidden Depths 60 inch wide wool/poly/acrylic mixture, a cloth of a quality normally only found in an all wool cloth. The wool content is high and the hand is glorious. It is a coating/ jacket weight in dark navy with a black plaid design ' hidden' in the main body of the cloth. Super cloth; £6.50 per metre. JN46 How I Wonder
JN38 Flannel Two 54 inch wide 100% cotton lumberjack shirting checks; a) Blue - In blue, beige with a fine line over check in red. b) Grey - grey, black, mustard with the same fine line over check in red. Lovely cloths; £4.50 per metre.
JN39 Gant A cloth that didn't make it into our last catalogue but appeared on the web it is this rather splendid 60 inch wide brushed cotton flannelette shirting in a plaid check, quite large plaid check it has to be said in a dark blue a rusty red, mustardy yellow and combinations of all three of these colours in the weave. It isn't a dyed fabric; it is a dyed yarn woven cloth. It would be absolutely magnificent as a lining to an anorak or as an over shirt or just as a very warm shirt indeed. £5.00 per metre. JN40 Green Gables Grandpa shirting, 56in wide 100% cotton with 1/4in wide woven stripe, pale blue and cream with soft finish. £4.25 per metre.
JN41 Green Pea Fleece Whilst very fine this is actually a double fleece with a windproof waterproof membrane in between the two layers. I can remember having this fabric or one very similar back in the old Croft Mill days, which sold exceptionally well and was the forerunner of fleeces, which repelled the weather. To give you some idea of the weight it is two micro fleeces bonded together by the membrane so the overall weight might be 300grms. The rolls are quite heavy having said that, if you get on with the colour it's a bit of a bargain, 60in wide: £7.00 per metre. Last roll.
JN42 Gingham 1/4in corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton; a) Red, b) Green, c) Lilac, d) Yellow, Black, g) Brown, h) Pale Blue. £3.25 per metre.
e) Dark Blue,

JN43 1 Inch Gingham 1” corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton a) Emerald Green, b) Pale Blue, c) Dark Blue, £3.25 per metre.

d) Red.
a) Towelling - 60in wide, cotton lycra stretch, baby towelling in the palest green imaginable. £5.10 per metre. b) Fleece - 60in wide polyester polar fleece in pale green. £6.10 per metre. These go together, they don't match in colour exactly but they are as near as damn it.
JN47 Hound-Dog After a dreadful few days of constant rain and darkness we have a beautiful cold sunny day. Here are a couple of boucles perfect for this weather. a) Black & White - 60in wide ¼ in hounds tooth check in black and white the cloth is wool/ polyester suiting, 60% wool 40% polyester and has a fine boucle weave. We knew you were going to like this so to go with it we have another boucle. b) Burgundy - 60in wide 60% wool 40% polyester in burgundy/ wine with lighter tones and black flecks, the boucle effect lifted in grey. Both fabrics from Magee, and superbly made in Ireland. £6.10 per metre.
JN48 Impeached 60 inch wide lightweight 100% cotton twill trousering in either; a) pale pink or b) pale blue It has a peached or slightly sanded finish a good cloth, a very good cloth and £4.75 per metre. JN49 In a Country Garden 60 inch wide reasonably heavy cotton shirting and dress fabric with a creeping/ growing floral pattern in either; a) Black - Red and orange flowers with green leaves and a brown stem on a black ground. b) Mauve, red and yellow flowers with green leaves with a fine black outline on white. c) Jade, turquoise and cream flowers with green leaves with a fine navy outline on pale blue. d) Lime - The same colour flowers and leaves as b) but on a lime background. The last is quite a stunner. The other ones are perhaps a little more subdued although the white is also quite stunning. £5.00 per metre.

JN50 In the Silvery Moon 60 inch wide pure unadulterated fabulous cotton lawn in black with the faintest, absolute faintest of silvery yarn woven in a regular but not too obvious way. It is in fact only able to be seen under certain light conditions. The cloth itself has the hand of silk and is absolutely fabulous. £4.50 per metre. JN51 If Things Don't Change There is a saying that if things don't change they will stay the same but I'm sure in our experience its not the case. Not much has actually got better in terms of fabric over the years and indeed much has got worse, certainly in terms of quality, but that's not the true in this case. This is another Gurteen cotton trousering, 60 inches wide. My overused adjective of wonderful applies once again here, it's 98% cotton 2% lycra flannel. That's exactly what it has the feel of, an old-fashioned wool flannel even though it is made of cotton. It is woven in dark and pale grey yarns giving a lightly marled appearance to the surface, it's about the weight of a moleskin and in fact been sanded or peached finish to give it almost a moleskin feel and it is £5.50 per metre.
JN53 Italian Wool Serge This cloth obviously can't defy description but it's beautiful. I know I have gone on boringly about some of the cloths we have had in the past but this is good as any in navy blue, 60in wide substantial Italian wool with polyester serge fit for a prince £12.00 per metre. JN54 Is it I? For some little time now I have tried to persuade you of the benefits of this wonderful furnishing fabric but obviously failed. It seems to be an all or nothing cloth, you don't want a metre of it you want 10 or 20 or whatever. The yarns in it are, brown, light mustard and an odd bit of blue, all of which combine to give the brown and dark mustard colour. It is a sort of 1in square check, i.e. the mustard is the main body of the colour and the brown is woven into lines in either direction forming a square. Strong and hard wearing cotton, viscose and polyester. Apparently made for the refurbishment of a hotel chain and we have the remains. It will cover many sins and could therefore be a favourite with students. Last roll. 54 inches wide; £3.50 per metre. JN55 If You Go Down To The Woods Today… A very pretty navy blue brushed cotton with an all

over but not too densely printed old Steiff like teddy bear in various poses and not with food but with posies. The teddies are teddy bear coloured and the flowers have some elements of the teddy bear colour with green, red and pale blue amongst it. Can't see the boys getting too excited. 56 inches wide; £4.50 per metre.
JN56 In The Mood Whilst on the cusp of things extraordinary I will tell you about this rather different, burnt mottled orange polyester lace. If the design was straight up and down it would be a stripe but this is in squiggles about 2in or 5cm wide which are joined together by intricate strands of lace. These small gaps in the squiggles are therefore pretty much see through but there is not enough to make it brazen. There were other colours but we chose this one as being more appropriate to mix and match with other fabrics. It looks delicate but it is quite robust. 56 inches wide; £4.00 per metre.
JN57 John Wayne 60in wide, robust cotton cavalry twill trousering in: a) Pea green. b) Burgundy. These have a light brushed finish which softens the cloth. Both made in Portugal's best mill. £5.10 per metre.
JN58 Leatherette 60 inch wide superior leather faux furnishing in a dark brown. £7.50 per metre. JN59 Lap up warm A north of England expression,
JN52 Imitation 45 inch wide imitation silk. This particular cloth is a delightfully superfine and super soft, quite shiny fabric and we have it at the present time in a rather splendid a) pillar-box red and b)orange which would certainly act as an under garment for the lace described elsewhere. £3.75 per metre.
maybe said in the south as well, when the air got chilly and a fear of draughts set in. A cloth to gird your loins. A nice quite woven twill, bluey/green heavy coating 30% wool/ 30% acrylic/ 40% polyester. Reasonable hand and good value. 60in wide; £5.10 per metre.
JN60 Linen Touch This is a 45 inch wide 100% polyester cheese cloth which boasts on the wrapper 'linen touch'. I must confess that it has a feel totally unlike polyester

but obviously it will behave and will wash and wear exactly as polyester. It doesn't crease so therefore is not exactly 'linen look' fabric but it doesn't really pretend to be this is a lovely finish and well worthy of your attention £3.50 per metre, oh by the way it's in cream.
pair of Ralph Lauren trousers, which were cut to suit the American waist and buttocks, or as Forest Gump would say butocks. I happen to think the colour is delightful and the cloth itself is fabulous. It is poly/cotton 55/45, 60in wide and as an inducement it is £3.00 per metre.
JN61 Moorcroft Sometime ago we had a 45in wide satin blouse cloth with a Moorcroft inspired design. This is the same design with a plummy sort of background with the growing largish floral design in blues, turquoise and beige. Very 1940's in my book. Good depth of colour. £4.00 per metre.
JN68 Pretty Prints 45in wide, 80% poly/cotton fine poplin in the following patterns: £3.25 per metre. a) Lilac Floral Spray - Tiny lilac floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground. b) Blue Floral Spray - Tiny mid blue floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground c) Bright Pink Rose - Small pink abstract roses with blue flowers, green leaves and red highlights on a white ground. d) Funky Red - funky large retro red floral on a white ground. e) Funky Navy - funky large retro navy floral on a white ground.
JN62 Moleskin 60in wide, cotton moleskins in; a) Sage - A pale sagey green - medium/ heavyweight b) Olive - A dark olivey grey - light/ medium weight £5.60 per metre.
JN63 Melton 60in wide, very dark navy blue, pure wool Melton lightweight coating, of immense quality. £12.50 per metre. JN64 Mexican Wave This is another one of those fabrics which we have sold out of and got again albeit not a lot. It really is a super quality velvet. This is a 56in wide cotton velvet. Ok so now comes the difficult bit in describing it to you. The colours and the pattern are all contained within the one fabric, the back of which is actually grey but the front i.e. the velvet side has got dark greens, a very pale greeny gold and a bit of brown with an overall appearance of a dark/rich fabric. This all looks like the beach when the sea has been in and done its bit but not the flat bit, the bit that ripples. The ripples aren't straight up and down or across they are diagonal and they come in bands of 3 or 4 and are about 2 inches wide. I know you're thinking he is making a bit of a mess of this and in truth I probably am but this new machine isn't helping because I have panicked a little bit. It's certainly either for skirts, jackets or perhaps for a waistcoat. The cloth is of an outstanding variety. I think its hundred percent cotton, there may be little bit of viscose in there and it has a slight sheen to the finish to add to all its other glories; this is £8.50 per metre. JN65 NAU This is a 60 inch wide polyester/ viscose 'linen look' lightweight mid grey summer trousering/ suiting. There are a number of articles claiming to be 'linen look'; I suppose this whilst just being another one is just a tad different. It has a slight sheen to the overall surface, is very handleable and does not crease like linen does and is a very easy care fabric. I don't think it's just another cloth but not bad at £5.00 per metre. JN66 Needlecord 54inch wide 97% cotton/ 3% lycra needlecord. Very good quality and made in Yorkshire. a) Black b) Chestnut Both £5.50 per metre. JN67 One suit You may recall last summer we had two suits one of which was a cream/ light mustardy colour and the other was lilac. The cream/ mustard has entirely gone, but we still have the lilac and who knows if lilac will be next season's colour and even if it isn't why should we worry. I have a pair of lilac golf shorts, which were carefully altered, by my wife, from a 6
JN69 Poplin Prints 45in wide, poplin upon which have been printed in pleasant and beautiful designs. If you require samples of these please specify which ones you want as we can't sample the whole range as 1 item. 1) Tiny Pink Rose - An off white/cream background with an all over but sparsely printed pink and green style floral rose design. 2) Penelope - A quite bright but soft pink with a tiny all over floral design in pink, very dark burgundy, bright yellow and green. Extremely pretty, lovely for little girls. 3) Pretty Pinstripe - Cream ground with triple pale blue pinstripe in between which are tiny flowers in lilac and blue with green leaves. 2cm repeat with the stripes at 0.5cm. More cream than blue. 4) Say it with flowers - A very pretty traditional medium scale (flowers approx 1in) densely printed floral in; a) Slate Green ground with a rose floral print in pink dark red cream, pale orange and dark green. b) Black ground with a rose floral in pink cream gold and green. 5) Pretty Polka - Small polka dot (3mm) print in pink, lemon, mint, lilac and cream on a brown ground. Randomly printed polka dots, lots of them close together, ratio of background to dots is the same. Very pretty. 6) Libby - Navy ground with an all over small contemporary ditsy floral print in pink, yellow, pale blue and pale green. 7) Flora - Pretty green ground with all over small floral print in pink, cerise, pale blue with paler green leaves with dark green detail. Very Pretty. 8) English Rose - Lovely traditional style pale blue rose print (approx 1in in size) on a pale cream ground. Lovely spacing with a lot of the cream ground showing. 9) Beatrice - Small scale trailing scroll leaf print in cream and black. The black is printed onto the cream cloth. 10) Strawberries and Cream - Very pretty craft print with 7mm strawberries spaced approx 1.5cm apart on a clotted cream / very pale lemon ground. 11) Mamas and Papas - 6mm Polka dot with 2cm spacing.

Baby yellow, peach, pale green and pale blue spots on a white ground. 12) Polka - 6mm Polka dot spaced at about 1.5cms. a) White on cerise b) White on red. In both these the cloth is white and the ground is printed. c) Red Polka on a white ground. 13) The Crafty Spot - These have a tiny all over white polka dot print. a) Pale sage green b) Pale blue c) Baby pink d) Light navy e) Red/wine. 14) Ellen - Scrumptious 45in wide fine cotton poplin. This is a striped pattern with a 1/8th inch coloured stripe and ¼ inch cream stripe. In the cream stripe there are tiny little roses every ¼ inch running up the stripe. This comes in 2 colourways a) Black and Cream - the Roses are red and pink and green b) Green and Cream - the Roses are pink and green 15) Patch - A lovely random patchwork print made up of 2in (5cm) squares. The squares consist of flowers, polka dots, tiny gingham check and other abstract floral patterns. Four super colourways to choose from: a) Pale Blues b) Darker Blues (Navys) c) Pinks d) Black/ Greys That doesn’t sound too inspiring I know but this is the main identification colour. There is a lot of cream in them, there are also lots of tones of the colours and they all have pink flowers in them. They really are very pretty. As Forsyth would say, I think they are my favourite. All these poplins are beautifully woven and a lovely hand. £5.95 per metre.
JN70 Plain Dyed Poplin 45in wide 100% superior quality cotton poplin in a) Red or b) Cerise £5.60 per metre.
JN71 Percale 96in wide, white cotton rich poly/cotton percale sheeting, woven in Italy where they have a nose for fine fabrics. It's a pity it's not wider. £5.00 per metre.
JN72 Pertex (Waterproof) a) 66in wide pale blue fine waterproof Pertex polyester cloth. If pale blue is the colour you are looking for this is for you. Another waterproof fabric that doesn't come along that often. £4.00 per metre. b) (Superfine) 60in wide black superfine coated, waterproof and breathable polyester fabric which would have gone into the outer of those expensive down filled gilets. A supreme cloth which was made locally: £4.50 per metre.
JN73 Peaches Notwithstanding the fact that some little girls are called Peaches or even perhaps because they are, I
thought this cloth would be suitable for them. It is 58in wide cotton/lycra denim in a rich bright peachy pink. If I didn't already own trousers in bright colours this might be a welcome addition to my wardrobe, only for golf you understand. A nice soft finish which will withstand many washes. £4.10 per metre.
JN74 Ponte Roma There are those out there who know all about this cloth and others who will be wondering what on earth it all means; I suppose literally it means a Roman bridge. What's that got to do with anything you will ask yourself. As far as the fabric is concerned it is a heavy duty polyester/ acrylic /lycra cloth, possibly used in the making of jodhpur like garments or tights for sporting activities, cycling shorts, that sort of thing. Immensely strong, beautifully made, quite rare I think. Around 56in wide. £4.10 per metre. JN75 Quality Cotton Trouserings For those of you who bought these wonderful cotton trouserings, we hope you are pleased but for those of you who have not; these are 60in wide quite substantial fabrics and are made up into garments for an awfully expensive big name brand. a) Black - a fine cotton twill in black, this also has a lightly sanded finish. b) Green - a fine cotton Bedford cord in a pale sage green c) Beige - a fine twill in beige/ khaki d) Burgundy - a fine cotton twill in burgundy which has been very lightly gone over to give it a soft hand. I have said it before and I'll say it again they are fabulous. These are all £5.10 per metre. JN76 Q I This 60in wide interesting and beautiful suiting is made from mostly wool with the addition of silk to give it a hand like no other. It comes in just the one weight, which is light suiting/ jacketing. I doubt that you would make trousers but you would make a skirt, whether you would want both jacket and skirt I am not sure. a) Beige - all shades of brown down to cream in the form of a dogtooth check. The background is basically cream woven into which are beige, darker beige, brown and darker brown making shapes, all of which are very clever and b) Jewel - the same pattern with a different cream background into which are woven the same shapes, in navy blue turquoise, pale green and lemon. As good as cloth gets. Both are £9.50 per metre. JN77 Revenge first This 60in wide heavy wool crepe coating in dark lavender is seriously tough and seriously beautiful. We had it rolled down into 30mtr lots because anything more than that and you couldn't lift it. This is not likely to have been a recent cloth, as I am fairly certain it was made in England and we haven't made this sort of cloth for a long time. It will make a super coat, cover the settee, keep draughts out. You won't be displeased. £7.50 per metre. JN78 Salome 57in wide gorgeously printed cotton voiles in the following colours: a) Reds, orange, rust, mauve with a hint of burgundy. b) Blues, jade, aqua, turquoise, lime and a hint of navy.

On both of which is a mid to large scale white outline paisley floral pattern. Fabulous. £6.25 per metre.
JN79 Softy 60 inch wide, black or white polyester twill fabric with a very soft finish which will make wonderful twirly skirts. £3.00 per metre.
JN80 Severiano 60in wide cotton moleskin with cavalry twill weave in khaki and a very soft finish. You will gather from the title that it is Spanish £5.60 per metre.
JN81 Slip Sliding Satin 45in wide, heavy duty satin, with a fantastic sheen and a great body. If you are into theatricals this autumn and early winter, this is a cloth that will be seen at the back of any auditorium never mind the school hall. a) Emerald b) Royal Blue c) Petrol £3.50 per metre. Some slight Seconds at £2.00 per metre.
JN82 Sheeting Not exactly like discovering a 6.2-carat diamond but in its own way just as comforting. This is 50/50 poly/cotton, is 94in wide and we have it in four colours; a) Red b) Black c) Navy d) Royal Blue £4.60 per metre. JN83 Swimwear 60 inch wide nylon/ lycra swimsuit fabric in two designs. a) Orange and a shade of red to match the orange all in a floral tropical print. b) Patriotic red, white and blue all over floral pattern. Not quite as tropical this time but is exceptionally colourful. Both £6.00 per metre. JN84 Stone Me 60in wide 60% wool 38% polyester 2% lycra lightweight, summer weight really, suiting in a darkish stone colour. It would appear that stone covers a wide spectrum of shades and tones as indeed stone itself does, this is just one of them. This is probably no more than a 6oz cloth and would therefore be described as tropical weight. It drapes well and is £5.10 per metre.
JN85 Spot the Difference A delightful whisper light cotton lawn in cream with an all over dot print in pale orange and burgundy. The size of the dots varies from tiny to no more than 1/4in in diameter. 60 inches wide; £6.00 per metre.
JN86 Seersucker As summery as you are going to get, this 45 inch wide 100% cotton seersucker which is a bit of a rarity is an 1/8 of an inch check in pink and white and would look ever so pretty in a tiny dress with puff sleeves. £4.60 per metre. JN87 Shine on 44” wide gold or silver lame. For decoration, for dress, for furnishing even. High gloss mirror finish. a) Gold b) Silver Both are £4.10 per metre.

JN88 The Blues A little selection of 60 inch wide wool worsted with polyester lightweight suitings, one of which we've had before the other three we haven't. 1) Black Fine Hopsack - this one we have had before, which is in fact not blue at all but black. I do apologise for that but as I have mentioned I have now put the lights on. Having been outside I can confirm that it is black and a very fine hopsack weave which is almost unscrunchable, well that is to say you can scrunch it for all that it is worth and it still doesn't crease. It really is an outstanding cloth, pleased to have it again; 60 inches wide; £10.00 per metre. 2) Worsted Wool Suiting - which once again isn't as blue as I thought or perhaps it's a very very dark blue, no it's black. It's a wool worsted with lycra suiting and although it is not quite as fine as number one, it nearly is and has the same sort of beautiful soft hand. 60 inches wide; £10.00 per metre. 3) Almost Crepe - It isn't actually made as a crepe but it has a very very fine crepe like weave which means that it has surface interest; it isn't just an up-and-down yarn. There are things happening as the Michelin star chefs would have you believe. This is in navy blue; it's mainly worsted wool with some polyester. Not as fine as the previous two and in old-fashioned money this is probably a 9 or 10oz cloth where the two previous ones were 6 or 7oz and this too is 60 inches wide; £10.00 per metre. 4) Wool Serge - This is not necessarily the best 'til last but it is a beauty. It's a navy blue wool serge with a very slight sheen to the finish, you are bound to have seen suits, skirts and jackets made in this cloth, it really is quite a sheen from near to or afar, and once again this is 60 inches wide and £10.00 per metre and for the tailors amongst you I know you know that's not expensive. JN89 The Other End of the Spectrum. This is a 60 inch wide baby pink stretch superfine needlecord. We have needlecords elsewhere in the catalogue but this came on its own and we have left it on its own, a fabulous colour and a lightish but not flimsy cloth. Beautifully made; £5.10 per metre.
JN90 Ticking Now this is a word you don't often come across well you may come across the word but you don't come across the cloth, this is 100% cotton stiffened mattress ticking in cream with a traditional pale blue ticking stripe. This is still made in Lancashire; it is a fairly hefty cloth. The rolls are very substantial and if you were covering furniture for the making and arming or indeed covering a mattress, this is your man. Take care when you buy this cloth as it may be the last you ever see of it. 57 inches wide; £5.00 per metre.
JN91 The Road to Damascus 56 inch wide 100 % cotton, unbleached but finished twill with a lightly brushed back which has the effect of softening the cloth. Will dye any colour that you wish if you don't want to use it in it's very natural state. Once again, the cloth is from the same people who produced the ticking which is still making odd batches from which we sometimes get the crumbs. This too is £5.00 per metre.

JN92 The Future is Behind Us Planning forward has never been one of my fortes and I do know that people by the time you read this will already have bought next year's Christmas presents and cards in what I imagine will be an enormous selling event despite the VAT increase. We were fortunate last backend to get hold of some Egyptian cotton table cloth fabric made by the only firm worth their salt in this game for hundreds of years, namely Hilden of Accrington who sadly moved from Accrington to Egypt and hence the product that I now have before me. 70 inches wide pure Egyptian cotton, and comes in a) Traditional Christmas red and b) Bottle green; both with the equally traditional ivy leaf pattern. £7.50 per metre. JN93 This Selection Most Delicate I said that in my best Hercule Poirot intonation with a view to leading you into one or two lightweight cotton and polyesters and other things for the better weather. Firstly, we have 1) Portmeirion - a very superior 100% percent cotton lawn with a bit of a daft width of around 54 inches in what would I have to say is white background absolutely covered in navy blue and other shades of blue flowers, leaves and dot decoration. The handle is as good as any lawn I have ever come across in this is £6.00 per metre. 2) Almost Taupy - is a different kind of I suppose you call it beige mixed with a little mustard background with an all over small floral design in white and lighter tones of the background colour. 60 inches wide; £4.75 per metre. 3) Ashley Kidson - is a 60 inch wide and lightweight printed cotton with either; a. An off white or b. Quite bright yellow background Both with a growing all over floral pattern in shades of blue, mauve, red, pink and green. Almost stunning, I don't know what you would have to do it to make them stunning but they are almost there. Bold and wonderful, Laura Ashley and Cath Kidson style patterns come to mind (not that these are either of these makes though). 60 inches wide; £5.00 per metre. 5) Etched Lawn - this is a printed lawn. It has dark khaki background with this almost etched large outlined floral pattern in white. I think this is stunning, not outstanding but stunning. Beautifully delicate and a lovely cloth. 60 inches wide; £5.00 per metre.
JN95 Together Again Two 60 inch wide Gurteen cotton trouserings quite different but of a similar nature. a) Pin Stripe - is halfway towards being a moleskin in a very dark brown with a very pale beige chalk/ pinstripe at half inch or 1cm intervals. It has been sanded not brushed the way a moleskin has but it has a very soft hand and is in my opinion a very special cloth. b) Chain Stitch - medium weight cotton trousering is one that we had before and have got again. It's a two sided cloth. Overall the cloth is a light tan with a fancy very fine chain stitch pattern on the one side. The other side has then been over died in a colour that I describe as bark which is somewhere between brown and grey with some of the tan detail of the cloth showing through. This has a herringbone weave pattern overlaid on top of the chain stitching. It will have a wash down effect when washed so don't wash it too hot, I would advise washing it separately to start certainly. I've washed some and the effect is quite astonishing, it becomes a better cloth if anything. These two are £5.50 per metre and there is not a great deal left of either of them. JN96 The 39 Steps This a the velvet of an identical nature to the Mexican Wave cloth described elsewhere but this is in blues, all fairly dark and has almost a block paving/step pattern, quite small throughout the cloth. The velvet is as velvet as you can get, it has a very soft feel even though is a substantial fabric and is stunning; 60 inches wide £8.50 per metre.

JN97 Tailors Linings 58/ 60 inches wide rather tasty JN94 The Crinkley's Two similar lightly crinkled fabrics are but that is where the similarity ends. a) Damson - 45 inch wide cotton in damson which has an all over fine line growing floral embroidery design in white and pink. b) Tie Dye - 54 inch wide 100% polyester with an all over very similar embroidered fine line floral pattern in pink, plum, damson and white on a plum, damson and pink tiedyed cloth. Both beautiful in their own way, if you like a delicate chiffon then the last one is for you, if you want something with a little more substance then the first one is for you; both £4.50 per metre.
viscose acetate tailors linings seen in suits which think they are superior. Quite often it is only the lining which is superior. Not cheap but very good. a) Black with a hint of chocolate and bilberry, it sounds like a merlot, with a beautiful tiny self coloured paisley design. b) Dark mushroom with a hint of pink in a slightly larger paisley design c) Dark cream with a larger paisley design d) Purple/ mauve 'wave design' In each case the design is highlighted by the satinised yarn. We have around 30/40 metres of each; £4.00 per metre.

JN98 Two into One 56/58 inch wide pleated polyester needlecord in black. Sounds simple enough but it is cleverer than at first it appears. The pleated has given the cloth a quite different softness and a quite dressy feel. Washed a treat and feels like a soft cotton. £4.00 per metre. JN99 Times Square Imagining all the lights of Times Square and perhaps of Las Vegas combined on a dark night. This is a viscose dress fabric vibrant and full of colour. Bright pink, mauve, yellow, gold and cream fabulous abstract design on a black ground. You won't go unnoticed in this. 60in wide and £4.50 per metre. JN100 The Colour Purple Purple just happens to be one of my favourite colours; incidentally the other one is green, not all greens but most of them. This is a very regal 60in wide purple cotton, lightweight canvas trousering, a fairly soft finish but very tough. £4.60 per metre.
JN101 Taffeta 58in wide, polyester taffeta in dark damson. It has a' distressed' finish which is no surprise considering the treatment it is given. Sort of bouffanty things come to mind as do indeed do ball gowns. Quite rare I think. £4.60 per metre. JN102 The Union 60in wide, very finely woven cotton trousering in very dark navy with a black back, whether this contributes to the darkness of the navy I am not sure but why else would you have a black back on a navy cloth. On closer inspection the navy face side has a very fine twill weave whilst the black back has a plain weave. Under normal circumstances you only get that if you weave two cloths and put them together. I don't know how they have done that, but it is a weave and not a print. Super cloth. £5.60 per metre.
JN103 Velour Under various titles we've had this cloth for some time, it sold out on two occasions so we have got what we believe will be the last of it but who knows and here it is; it's polyester and super soft. I suppose you'd say it was a bit like a very light weight tracksuiting a) A fine rib, almost non-existent rib in Navy. The next is in a heavier rib pattern, these ribs run vertically down the cloth and it comes in b) Black c) Bottle Green d) Pale Grey e) and a little in Damson All £5.00 per metre. JN104 Velvet Cord 60in wide, ridiculously fine cotton cord, with a velvet finish. Without lycra. a) Pale beige. b) Dark brown. With lycra. c) Pale blue. e) Navy The pale beige and brown are lighter in weight than the others. Super, smashing, great! All are £5.10 per metre.

JN105 Van Delden 60 inch wide poly/cotton, this time in a darker beige which because of the fineness in the weave and the finest coatings is actually water repellent so this makes excellent summer walking or anorak gear, very light weight: The very best Van Delden in Holland - the very best, you would pay £60+ if you bought Rohan or Northface trousers in this. £4.50 per metre. JN106 Veronique - Taffeta 60in wide, embroidered polyester taffeta in 3 Sapphire. The embroidery is a creeping trailing floral design in a half drop across the width. Therefore making 2 repeats across the cloth and 4 trails. The flower is elegant and there is a lot of cloth between the embroidery i.e. the embroidery is not overpowering. One of the leaves “bursts” open with velour inside. This is awfully clever and a classy cloth. £5.60 per metre. JN107 Winceyette 45 inch wide cotton winceyette shirting/pyjama cloth in either; a) Pink with a white scrawling floral pattern or b) Pale blue with the same white scrawling floral pattern. Not the best Lancashire winceyette by any stretch of the imagination, but very much more than adequate; £4.00 per metre.
JN108 Wedgewood 54in wide white shadow stripe cotton voile with an all over but reasonably sparse floral sprig design in shades of blue. The shadow weave in the cloth forms approximately 1/8th of an inch stripe which you will see when you wear it but on the roll it's not that easy to see. Lovely cloth £4.60 per metre. JN109 Wool Mouflon Coating This is a cloth which some people caught with in early December was this beautiful all wool fairly lightweight wool mouflon coating in a wonderful; a) Cherry red, or b) Black with tiny little wisps of paler angora like fibres. The latter one we have had before, the cherry one we had before in a blue and a brighter red. It is the same cloth as those were, it is British and it's beautiful; £12.50 per metre. JN110 Waterproofs 60in wide coated polyester fabrics, all a little bit different and all extremely capable cloths. All Ex Henri Lloyd. a) Royal blue fine hopsack. b) Pretty much the same but purple. c) Again but in Burgundy. There isn't a great deal of any of them as these waterproof fabrics are becoming extremely scarce. So whilst you can't fill your boots because we haven't got enough if you are in need of good strong waterproof fabrics now is your chance. £5.10 per metre. JN111 Yeehah Not quite 60 inch wide soft cotton plaid shirting not a million miles from the traditional Viyella patterns of the past. Although not the same fabric it is 100% cotton it is quite a delicate cloth with a lovely nice hand. We have 1 colour left and it comes in shades of dusky pink and pale orange and navy blue with the same fine line over check in white. The check is approximately 2in. £4.10 per metre
