Issue 12 2011

Bustin' out all over Hello again, much has happened since we last spoke. Not in any particular order but we had a wonderful spell of weather, the royal wedding, where some of the younger ladies in particular vied for the most outrageous hat design and in fact it was left to the queen and the mother of the bride to bring some sense of propriety and elegance to the hat department. The week prior to that Caroline had her baby, a boy who is as yet anonymous, although his sister who still really wants a sister has christened him junior. For good or bad we follow our tried and tested pattern of something old, something new, nothing borrowed and certainly the odd thing blue. To start we have our linen collection and here it is. JU1 T.L.C. a) An almost denim blue shirting/ lightweight trousering in pure linen with a fine double pin stripe at ¼ inch intervals in cream. b) A mid grey, light almost herringbone weave pure linen cloth with the finest of pin stripes in white or even a paler grey at ½ inch intervals. c) A quite dark navy, linen, with some interest in the weave and again with a faint, lighter coloured stripe at ½ inch intervals. It only just takes away the plainness of the cloth, which has the addition of around 10% silk. d) A quite plain pale mushroom, almost hopsack weave, in pure linen. e) As above but in dark gold. f) As the two above in pale grey. g) A very fine melange of white and navy blue irregular yarns in almost a very fine hessian weave. I suppose the overall impression would be blue but it is quite different. h) A sort of textured looking cloth. Once again it is in light navy blue, pale blue and creamy coloured yarns and whilst the overall impression is certainly blue it is in no way plain. i) A heathery coloured cloth with a very faint over check in pale blue. There are actually quite a lot of different coloured yarns in the make up of this but the overall effect is heathery. j) Navy blue twill weave, lightweight suiting in navy blue with a pin stripe and dot chalk stripe in pale blue, red and white, ie, three separate stripes. k) Pale air force blue suiting made up of blue and white yarns with a muted turquoise and pink woven overcheck. l) Light navy zig zag weave with navy and white yarns with a navy pale blue windowpane check. All these cloths have a soft hand and will obviously wear as linen wears, which is something you either love or hate but they do represent as good a lot of linens as I have seen and as you know I have been in this game for quite some time. All 60in wide £8.50 per metre.

JU2 A Better Class Maybe just different but these linings have a satin finish and are made of good old fashioned acetate. Beautifully soft and really quite classy. a) Chocolate b) Navy c) Emerald 56 inches wide; £3.50 per metre. JU3 A Brace Two 60in wide poly/ wool suitings both in shades of green, but quite different. a) The first is lightweight serge in what I imagine was Sherwood green. In my book more suited to jackets. b) The second is a much lighter fabric in what can only be described as an extremely fine Bedford cord weave, but to all intents and purposes it's plain. Certainly a trouser weight. Both are £10.00 per metre.

JU4 Ace of Spades 54in wide black polyester chiffon £3.00 per metre.

JU5 Agog and Aghast You haven't bought this black almost 60in wide finely pleated polyester trousering. This is probably due to how I have perceived this cloth and described it to you. Perhaps pleating is too strong a term for what has happened to the cloth, whilst it's sort of finishes up in wrinkles rather than pleats it is very fine corduroy. To the touch it is virtually indistinguishable from cotton. Whist you might not make trousers, you will make skirts and shirts. As a sweetener it is £3.00 per metre. Come on don't let me down, I've done my bit. JU6 A Hard Day's Night I feel like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards, my hair resembles the wayward father from the TV show Bread. I don't feel to have accomplished much, so perhaps it's time I went home but not before I tell you about this last cloth that has just fallen down in front of me. It is not too difficult to describe in that it is a sort of mixture of browns and greys with a windowpane check in burgundy, but that's the easy bit. The cloth has a hand of silk and so it ought because it is part wool, part linen

and part silk, as soft as a baby's bottom. That's the good news; the bad news is we have only 40 metres of it, so I am not sure it's fair to tell you about it. A truly remarkable cloth, 60 in wide, £12.50 per metre.

JU7 Ahoy There 60in wide 1in wide red and white striped twill, an identical cloth to 'Chef'. Very striking and £4.50 per metre.

JU8 Always Look on the Bright Side A couple of sample rolls of a poly/wool bold check fabric. I don't want to use the word tartan but it is that sort of check. a) Red - Red, yellow and black check. b) Navy - Turquoise, navy and red check. Each of the coloured yarns criss-crosses and they are then overlaid by a big white square over check. They are bold. They will make wonderful blankets for your trips out in the horseless carriage in the coming winter or failing that something to wrap up in when the power goes off. You don't need to restrict yourself, make a cape, skirt or trousers. All to be admired. 60 inches wide. £6.00 per metre.

JU13 A Very Different Blue I am sure I must have seen this particular shade of blue in my lifetime but I can't really say that is true. It is neither fishing nor mending nets; it's neither pale nor dark nor air force nor kingfisher. I suppose it might be leaning, yes it is leaning towards a kingfisher blue. Another softly finished cotton trousering with a fine twill weave and as I say it's a very different colour. £6.00 per metre 60in wide. JU14 Battleship 60in wide finely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can't believe it's entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour. £5.00 per metre. JU15 Brief Stretch 54in wide, cotton/ lycra lightweight denim. We thought we would not have anymore of this cloth but an odd 50mtrs has turned up from where we always got it. It will definitely be the last. A fairly traditional denim blue and a lovely cloth. £5.00 per metre.

Samples JU9 And There To I Plight Thee…….. The truth is I am not going to plight thee anything but perhaps I am one of those people that you can't trust with a secret. Not that I have been entrusted with any secrets but there are some cloths I wasn't going to tell you about, any of them, but I can't resist telling you about one; perhaps there will be others. This is a 54 in wide, linen, wool, acrylic/poly and lycra unstructured loose weave, almost Donegal Tweed like fabric, in grey; it won't ever look tailored as I see it but it has been made into expensive jackets. We only have the odd 14 metres of it, that's why I could not resist telling you about it. A tad expensive at £12.50 per metre but it's just nice. JU10 A Time And A Place I don't suppose this is the right time or place to be talking about a seriously hefty woollen fabric either but we have had in the past a cloth called Revenge First which is an enormously strong, powerful, wonderful crepe in a dark lilac and we have managed to get a bit more. I think this may be the last of it, but if we have some luck it may not be; one of the best woollen cloths you are ever likely to get hold of. If you are doing the London to Brighton run in an open-topped Oldsmobile this is the cloth to wrap round you, to keep the rain out, never mind the cold. 60 in wide £7.00 per metre.

In the last year we have had to change our sampling charges which we have advised of in our last few catalogues as presently it is impossible for us to offer a completely free sampling service. We wish we could but unfortunately it is just not possible for us to do so. We do, however offer 5 samples free of charge. Please send us the reference number and name of the fabric you want plus the following depending on your requirements. Where there are a number of items under a reference please specify your preference; a, b, c etc. a) 1 - 5 samples, Please post your request and include a SAE. b) 6 - 10 samples £2.50 (Non refundable) c) 11 - 25 samples £5.00 (Non refundable) You can also view all of our fabrics at www.croftmill.co.uk

JU16 Broderie Anglaise Traditional 3 hole design Broderie Anglaise in white or cream. 45in wide; £4.50 per metre.

polyester/lycra swimwear cloth in white only. £6.00 per metre.

JU17 Bwhna 60in wide fabulous herringbone weave, very dark brown cotton trousering. It has been very lightly gone over to give it a wonderful hand and very good drape; another trousering from Gurteen, whose trousers can cost over £100 a pair. Also in very dark navy blue. £6.00 per metre.

JU12 Autumn Tweed 60in wide. This is a lovely

JU19 Check Chinos Then we have two Check Chinos. 60 inch wide very fine cotton chino in a light Prince of Wales check in a) Grey b) Brown, a pale brown but not beige Beautifully made both, £5.60 per metre. JU20 Chef 60in wide poly/cotton twill in a 1 inch square check in the following colours: a) Red and white b) Blue and White. This is probably of the 6/7 ounce weight which is trouser/apron/jacketing weight: £4.50 per metre. JU21 Chino The term chino is a bastardisation of the word China used by American troops returning from the Philippines with their military trousers which were made in China. So chinos were born; lightweight cotton trousers, worn during the second world war and to save fabric during the world war ll constraints, they had no pleats and were tapered at the bottom of the leg. Not all our cotton trouserings are light enough to fall into that category but here's what we have: a) Navy blue; 60in wide b) Olive green; 60in wide c) Light tan; 60in wide Then we have our heavier Gurteen cotton trousering with very light sanded finishes; all 60in wide: d) Light air force blue e) Black f) Sage green g) Khaki h) Light beige i) Light navy with a tiny white pinstripe at one eight of an inch intervals. Not a Chinese cloth in sight. £5.60 per metre. JU22 Confinement Just prior to Caroline's confinement she clapped eyes on this cotton/Lycra/satin in a fairly acid yellow or Chartreuse as she describes it. Not for the fainthearted, it's a strong beautiful colour, but sharp. Yes, sharp is the word, very finely woven with a very silky hand. £5.50 per metre. 60in wide.

JU23 Deep End Following the brightness of the Tutti Fruitti is this rather more sophisticated, not exactly demure but muted, embroidered viscose; in fact it has a little bit of Lycra in it. Around the 54/56 in wide mark (about 140 cm). The colours are what I imagine sea coral to be, that is some black, very dark blue, very dark kingfisher, green purple and rising to the surface mauve, pink and a burst of pale green on the surface. If I have made you believe you were somewhere off an atoll in the Pacific I can rest in peace. The design is of fairly large flowers, fronds and other things you might find growing in the recesses of the deep, and to cap it all there is a single thread of floral embroidery in the colours, not following but in addition to the design, intricate, clever and very sophisticated. £7.00 per metre.

JU24 Dress satin a) Some Like it Hot - a 54in wide mushroom or even light mushroom coloured polyester satin with a not quite distressed finish, perhaps worried finish would be a better description. It lends itself to dresses I have seen on TV lately in both loose and tight figure hugging styles. Quite different in my book. £4.50 per metre. b) Come Up and See Me Sometime - 60in wide dark Brown, cotton/ lycra satin. Dull finish, fairly heavy due to the denseness of the weave. If brown is in vogue you are in luck if it isn't, be different. £4.50 per metre.

JU25 Ducky 60 in wide very lightweight cotton canvas in a very, very beautiful shade of pale blue. Finely woven, on the cusp of greatness. £6.00 per metre.

JU26 Escape Dreaming of holidays, warm weather holidays in particular isn't daft, it's therapeutic. Thinking of what to cover up is more of a problem, however, don't worry, use our beautifully made printed cotton voile, light as a feather in an all over criss-cross print in white on a blood orange background with a polka dot print in burgundy inbetween the criss-crossing. Very hard cloth to get as much dye on as this has. Very Helena Christenson. Fabulous! 60 inches wide; £4.50 per metre. JU27 Finery A fine cotton voile, 56” wide, in off white not pure white but it is not cream. £4.00 per metre.

JU28 Finest Quality White Shirting 60in white finest quality poly/cotton shirting. £4.50 per metre.

JU29 Flannel Two 54 inch wide 100% cotton lumberjack shirting checks, Lovely cloths, a) Blue - In blue, beige with a fine line over check in red. b) Grey - grey, black, mustard with the same fine line over check in red. Both £4.85 per metre.

JU30 Floral Jersey Two cloths and designs to choose from, both largish floral if somewhat abstract. a) Is in shades and tones of mainly burgundy, brown, beige and white. Made in cotton, viscose and lycra with a gorgeous finish. £6.50 per metre. b) A smaller design, this time in cream, brown and bright lilac. Not just as silky as a). £6.00 per metre.

JU31 For Something Completely Different 1. 54 inch wide acrylic nylon and wool loosely knitted. Well, I would suggest you make scarves out of it. I don't believe you are going to do that as it is 54 inches wide and will be quite a big scarf. Obviously made to make tops out of, it's very delicate, very soft and comes in either; a) Dark brown and black with gold lurex thread. b) Light Brown - a lighter brown some black and white with the same lurex thread and the same loose knit.

It feels lovely against the skin, a cuddly sort of fabric and it's an experiment. As far as I am concerned I have seen the same sort of thing in scarves but I haven't seen it in anything else, perhaps Caroline has. Both £4.50 per metre. Worth a try! 2. Cherry - not quite on the same front is this red plain tassel, it's cherry red, it's knitted, it's 100% polyester and it has this very loose stringy tassely appearance which when held up to the light is pretty much see through so it obviously needs a lining. This is another little bit of a scarf like cuddly fabric; 56 inches wide and is £4.50 per metre.

JU32 Float Like A Butterfly 60in wide, floaty viscose dress cloths in three lovely designs. a) Blue tulips on a cream ground b) White leaf design on a red ground c) A “Jacobean” floral design in pink, rust, blue, green and yellow on cream. All £6.00 per metre. JU33 Fourteen And A Half This is a 52 in wide black rose fabric. I am just resting for a moment whilst considering how to tell you about it. Basically it's 60 in wide chiffon onto which has been sewn 2 inch diameter, ½ in tall roses made by cutting fabric into strips rolling it up and trimming it thus giving the effect of rose petals. The roses are joined together by the trailing edge of the last one quite close together. It was made in black and white but we have just managed to get a little of the black, only 14 ½ metres I have seen complete frocks made out of it, whether you would think it's a bit over the top doing that remains to be seen, but it is different and frankly at the price............ £12.00 per metre.

Dear Croft Millers We always love hearing your stories about what you are making with our fabrics. Please keep letting us know and please don't forget to let us know if you don't mind sharing your stories or pictures as we would love to post them on the website. Many Thanks, Caroline.

JU34 Gant A rather splendid 60 inch wide brushed cotton flannelette shirting in a plaid check, quite large plaid check it has to be said in a dark blue a rusty red, mustardy yellow and combinations of all three of these colours in the weave. It isn't a dyed fabric; it is a dyed yarn woven cloth. It would be absolutely magnificent as a lining to an anorak or as an over shirt or just as a very warm shirt indeed. £5.00 per metre.

JU35 Gingham 1/4in corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton; a) Red, b) Green, 4

c) Lilac, d) Yellow, e) Dark Blue, f) Black, g) Brown, h) Pale Blue, i) Pink. £3.50 per metre.

JU36 1 Inch Gingham 1in corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton a) Emerald Green, b) Pale Blue, c) Dark Blue, d) Red. £3.50 per metre.

JU37 Glop 45in wide cotton "batik", probably dyed in India. The cotton is beautiful, the finish is wonderful, the design, well, it comes in either red or navy blue with an amorphous sea design something you might see on the Great Barrier Reef, shells and wispy things, not exactly Portuguese men of war but more paisley looking than that, with splodges and splashes of colour. a) Red with turquoise, different blues, purple and green. b) Navy blue with gold, mustard, dark burnt orange, purple and white. Both £6.50 per metre.

JU38 Horse Whisperer 60 inch wide superfine cotton lawn and with a very delicate and faint Prince of Wales type of check. The background is slightly off white and the colours making up the check are pale blue and different shades of beige, a bit too much of the same you might think but on the other hand it's awfully delicate and is extremely well made. Summer nightdresses, sarongs type garments or just a lightweight shirt all come to mind. A beautiful cloth. £5.00 per metre. JU39 How I Wonder Towelling - 60in wide, cotton lycra stretch, baby towelling in the palest green imaginable. £5.10 per metre. JU40 Hyacinth This is a true navy-blue 56in wide cotton lawn with a floral bouquet print, hence the connection with the title. The bouquet has further shades of blue from pale blue through turquoise to royal and shades of green from very pale to dark olive and white. There is no outline to the print it's just there on the cloth as it happened as it were, the main bouquets are about as big as a side plate and the small ones are smaller than small saucers. What else can I say! It's very floral and a very nice print. £6.00 per metre. JU41 If Things Don't Change There is a saying that if things don't change they will stay the same but I'm sure in our experience it's not the case. Not much has actually got better in terms of fabric over the years and indeed much has got worse, certainly in terms of quality, but

Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

that's not true in this case. This is another Gurteen cotton trousering, 56 inches wide. My overused adjective of wonderful applies once again here, it's 98% cotton 2% lycra flannel. That's exactly what it has the feel of, an oldfashioned wool flannel even though it is made of cotton. It is woven in dark and pale grey yarns giving a lightly marled appearance to the surface, it's about the weight of a moleskin and in fact been sanded or peached finish to give it almost a moleskin feel and it is £5.50 per metre.

JU42 Imitation 45 inch wide imitation silk. This particular cloth is a delightfully superfine and super soft, quite shiny fabric and we have it at the present time in a rather splendid pillar-box red. £3.75 per metre. JU43 Impeached 60 inch wide lightweight 100% cotton twill trousering in either; a) pale pink or b) pale blue It has a peached or slightly sanded finish a good cloth, a very good cloth and £4.75 per metre.

JU44 In a Country Garden 60 inch wide reasonably heavy cotton shirting and dress fabric with a creeping/ growing floral pattern in either; a) White, red and yellow flowers with green leaves with a fine black outline on white. b) Pale Blue, turquoise and cream flowers with green leaves with a fine navy outline on pale blue. £5.00 per metre.

JU45 In the Silvery Moon 60 inch wide pure unadulterated fabulous cotton lawn in black with the faintest, absolute faintest of silvery yarn woven in a regular but not too obvious way. It is in fact only able to be seen under certain light conditions. The cloth itself has the hand of silk and is absolutely fabulous. £4.50 per metre. JU46 It Doesn't Get Much Better There will be those of you who bought from us, donkeys years ago it now seems, some 36in wide cotton shirting. If memory serves me right we sold that in 10 metre bolts and maybe charged £3.00. We had 10,000 metres and it flew out, as I'm sure it would today if we could get it. This might not be that cloth but it is approaching it, woven on more modern looms. I don't think it is a young cloth, 100% cotton most likely Egyptian cotton, but it could be better than that. It is pure white with a tiny diamond dobby and has a hand of silk, it almost melts, it is that delicious. 60in wide. £6.00 per metre. JU47 Jerseys - Cotton In different weights, different widths, different colours, different texture but all beautifully made in cotton. Medium weights: a) Rusty pink b) Pale lilac c) Pale Peach d) Marine blue e) Black

f) Crimson g) Yellow h) Mauve A heavyweight in i) White. All at least 60” wide. All £5.25 per metre.

JU48 Jerseys - Viscose Lovely quality viscose jerseys with a lovely soft silky hand, beautiful. a) Heather b) Light wine c) Pale sage d) Grey All at least 60” wide. All £5.25 per metre. JU49 John Wayne 60in wide, robust cotton cavalry twill trousering in Pea green with a light brushed finish which softens the cloth. Made in Portugal's best mill. £5.10 per metre. JU50 Leatherette 60 inch wide superior leather faux furnishing in a dark brown. £7.50 per metre. JU51 Linen 60in wide, pure Irish linen, dress weight in a quite dark navy blue. Nothing more needs to be said. Behaves like linen should. £6.50 per metre. JU52 Love Is Like….. A butterfly, what else. 45in wide cotton seersucker one eighth of an inch gingham check in either a) pale blue b) pale yellow Both have a random embroidered butterfly motif. Very pretty. £5.00 per metre.

JU53 Mark My Words Pink will be the colour when is a different matter. Had I known that we wouldn't have this awfully nice pink cotton lycra shirting with a woven fine satin stripe. An improbable width 48in due to the stretchy bit being in the width. Fabulous quality. £3.75 per metre. JU54 Moleskin cotton moleskins in; a) A sage green medium/heavyweight cotton 60in wide. £5.60 per metre. b) A dark olivey grey - light/medium weight cotton/lycra, 50” wide. £4.50 per metre.

JU55 Minstrel 60” wide black cotton lycra dress fabric with an all over outline floral and leaf design in white. Quite stunning. £5.00 per metre. JU56 Moorcroft Sometime ago we had a 45in wide satin blouse cloth with a Moorcroft inspired design. This is the same design with a plummy sort of background with the growing largish floral design in blues, turquoise and beige. Very 1940's in my book. Good depth of colour. Ex Laura Ashley. £4.00 per metre.

JU57 NAU This is a 60 inch wide polyester/ viscose 'linen look' lightweight pale blue summer trousering/suiting. There are a number of articles claiming to be 'linen look'; I suppose this whilst just being another one is just a tad different. It has a slight sheen to the overall surface, is very handleable and does not crease like linen does and is a very easy care fabric. I don't think it's just another cloth but not bad at £5.00 per metre.

Despite their floatiness they are reasonably firm and have an incredible soft silky hand. We only have about 20 metres of each and it's just as well because they are expensive at £12.00 per metre. They are not readily available and are quite exclusive.

JU66 Portmeirion A very superior 100% percent cotton lawn with a bit of a daft width of around 54 inches in what would I have to say is white background absolutely covered in navy blue and other shades of blue flowers, leaves and dot decoration. The handle is as good as any lawn I have ever come across in this is £6.00 per metre. JU67 Pretty Prints 45in wide, 80% poly/cotton fine poplin in the following patterns: £3.50 per metre. a) Lilac Floral Spray - Tiny lilac floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground. b) Blue Floral Spray - Tiny mid blue floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground. JU68 Pure and Simple 56” wide 100% unbleached cotton twill in a medium/heavy weight. a) Just as it is. b) With a lightly brushed finish which has the effect of softening the cloth. Both natural but have been worked and desized without taking away the wonderful smell of cotton. Both £4.95 per metre. JU69 QI This 60in wide interesting and beautiful suiting is made from mostly wool with the addition of silk to give it a hand like no other. It comes in just the one weight, which is light suiting/ jacketing. I doubt that you would make trousers but you would make a skirt, whether you would want both jacket and skirt I am not sure. a) Beige - all shades of brown down to cream in the form of a dogtooth check. The background is basically cream woven into which are beige, darker beige, brown and darker brown making shapes, all of which are very clever and b) Jewel - the same pattern with a different cream background into which are woven the same shapes, in navy blue turquoise, pale green and lemon. As good as cloth gets. Both are £9.50 per metre.

Travel Ban Just around the corner from us here there were two M&S outlets. The one in Boundary Mill, which is still going, the other one which stocked furniture and other things that they absolutely wanted to get rid of, has just closed down. All clothes went for £2.00 on the last day. I thought I might purchase what were described as travel trousers. My daughter asked why, are you going somewhere? Of course I am not going anywhere because she has had a baby and I am here. How foolish I am.

vibrant colourful rose design in red with green. Crisp as a nine bob note. £6.50 per metre.

JU65 Portofino As the name suggests these cloths are Italian. They are 60 in wide or as near as makes no difference. Extremely fine, very silky polyester satins in what can only be described as grand designs. a) Milano - A very large paisley print in gold, black, dark rust, mustard and cream on a dark green background.

JU71 Rose And Hubble 60in wide bright red, soft hand cotton poplin with an all over daisy print design, positively daisies this time. White and yellow daisies with green foliage and a myriad of tiny white pinprick spots. Last year we had this in blue, some of you may remember that fabric. £6.00 per metre.

JU70 Rosas 45in wide cotton poplin in white with a

JU72 Salome 57in wide gorgeously printed cotton voiles in Reds, orange, rust, mauve with a hint of burgundy. £6.25 per metre. JU73 Seersucker As summery as you are going to get, this 45 inch wide 100% cotton seersucker which is a bit of a rarity is an 1/8 of an inch check in a) pink and white b) pale blue and white Both would look ever so pretty in a tiny dress with puff sleeves. £4.60 per metre.

Opening Times We are not a shop as we have already mentioned. However appointments can be made and orders can be picked up if preferred. For placing orders by phone we are open between 9.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday but you can order online at www.croftmill.co.uk 24/7.

Our Guarantee As long as it has not been cut we will replace or make a refund for anything not to your liking within 14 days of delivery of your fabrics.

JU74 Severiano 60in wide cotton moleskin with cavalry twill weave in khaki and a very soft finish. You will gather from the title that it is Spanish £5.60 per metre. JU75 Sheeting Not exactly like discovering a 6.2carat diamond but in its own way just as comforting. This is 50/50 poly/cotton, is 94in wide and we have it in three colours; a) Red b) White c) Royal Blue £5.00 per metre.

JU76 Shine on 44” wide gold or silver lame. For decoration, for dress, for furnishing even. High gloss mirror finish. a) Gold b) Silver Both are £4.25 per metre. JU77 Slip Sliding Satin 45in wide, heavy duty satin, with a fantastic sheen and a great body. If you are into theatricals this autumn and early winter, this is a cloth that will be seen at the back of any auditorium never mind the school hall. a) Emerald b) Royal Blue £3.50 per metre. Some slight Seconds at £2.00 per metre. JU78 Soft O'er the Mountain Cast your mind back to when tripe and onions was a necessity and not a treat, when Saturday morning pictures was a great adventure and funny meant daft, not harmful. Well this is a 8

cloth to remind us all of that wonderful era. It is a kind of moleskin, 100% cotton, twill weave and has been brushed both sides and is therefore incredibly soft, any colour you like as long as it's olive. If you don't buy it I'll take it home and my wife can make trousers for me. I'll have enough to last a lifetime; in fact I think one pair will last a lifetime. Fabulous cloth 60in wide, £6.50 per metre.

JU79 Soft Option 60in wide cotton moleskin, in a mixture of navy blue and grey yarns. The back of the cloth looks to be all blue but the face where it has been raised is highlighted with grey in it, so it is a grey/ blue cloth at the end of it all. A soft hand and good weight but not too heavy, a bit of a corker. £6.00 per metre. JU80 Striped Taffeta I am not absolutely certain that this cloth isn't a lining, if it's a lining it's a stormer, if it's for skirts, waistcoats, bodices, that type of thing, it's extremely good. Basically it is a grey/ rust/ green stripe with finer grey/ rust/ silver stripes bordering the wider three main coloured stripes. Does that make sense? Or have I been wasting my time. It is a great cloth, a nice hand. 100% polyester. 60in wide, £4.50 per metre.

JU81 Swimwear 60 inch wide nylon/ lycra swimsuit fabric in two designs. a) Orange and a shade of red to match the orange all in a floral tropical print. b) Patriotic red, white and blue all over floral pattern. Not quite as tropical this time but is exceptionally colourful. Last few metres. Both £6.00 per metre. JU82 Tangerine Dream 60 in wide, wonderful cotton, in a woven seersucker, white and pale tangerine stripe. The cloth is actually more weathered than seer suckered. I think it has a washed finish, which gives it a used look you may not want, but it suits the fabric. It won't make a stiffened shirt but it will make a lovely soft blouse or shirt; the look is very clean and refreshing, it will look great with white trousers or skirt. There is only an odd 30 metres of it so you can't fill your boots but well worth having at £6.00 per metre. JU83 The 39 Steps This is the velvet of an identical nature to the Mexican Wave cloth described elsewhere but this is in blues, all fairly dark and has almost a block paving/step pattern, quite small throughout the cloth. The velvet is as velvet as you can get, it has a very soft feel even though is a substantial fabric and is stunning; 60 inches wide £8.50 per metre. JU84 The Bourne Contingency Owing to the recent extremely dry spell we decided to invest in a particular waterproof fabric which when the time comes will prove a boon. Very much a cloth of its ilk, one that I have seen at times in the past made into things, never just as cloth. Anyway here it is, perhaps the most closely woven fabric you are ever likely to see, and it is this for the most

Offices 5 & 6, Primet Business Centre, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire BB8 8DQ T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

part, which gives it its waterproofness. Don't tell me that's not a proper word I know it isn't. Made from polyester, it is breathable, windproof and waterproof and it comes in the one colour you might have guessed, black. It was on a 200 metre roll which apparently needed a high-powered forklift truck to move it. We have it in 25 metre rolls and believe me they are quite something, just as well Carmen is a strong lass. It's a tad under width at 57 in wide but I am sure that's enough to do what you need. £6.00 per metre.

JU85 The Other End of the Spectrum This is a 60 inch wide baby pink stretch superfine needlecord. We have needlecords elsewhere in the catalogue but this came on its own and we have left it on its own, a fabulous colour and a lightish but not flimsy cloth. Beautifully made. £5.10 per metre. JU86 The Union 60in wide, very finely woven cotton trousering in very dark navy with a black back, whether this contributes to the darkness of the navy I am not sure but why else would you have a black back on a navy cloth. On closer inspection the navy face side has a very fine twill weave whilst the black back has a plain weave. Under normal circumstances you only get that if you weave two cloths and put them together. I don't know how they have done that, but it is a weave and not a print. Super cloth. £5.60 per metre. Very little left. JU87 The Young Ones 56in wide soft lightly brushed cotton in navy blue with an all over novelty print which has amongst other things, Stief like teddy bears, rocking horses, tiny little aeroplanes, prams, flowers, children on bicycles, old fashioned stuffed toys on scooters motor bikes musical instruments. All of these things I omitted to tell you about when it was called 'When we go down into the Woods'. I always thought it was nice but having had another look I think it is quite wonderful. The background is navy blue; other colours are blues, fawns, beiges pinks, greens, a gamut of colour. £4.50 per metre. JU88 T.I.C. Following on the exclusive theme, we have had some Italian printed cotton lawns on the website but there is so little left they may not warrant being included in the catalogue. There may be some more next year; these will be the last lot for this year. They are as follows: a) Ascari - An abstract ”paisley” design in vibrant hues of purple, green, lime yellow, pale blue and black in a swirley un-neat pattern. b) Santorini - An explosion of colours, all be it muted colours, of greens, pink, black, beige, cream on a sort of taupe coloured background. An abstract, arty, design. c) Positano - A vibrant blue background with a large abstract “paisley” design in pink, green, lime and a little bit of pale orange. Only a small amount of each, 10-20 metres. They are 54 in wide, exclusive, and again, sadly, very expensive. £12.00 per metre.

JU89 Tinker Tailor 60in wide viscose/acetate “tailors linings” as follows; a) Silvery grey with a tiny all over dobby spot pattern in silver. b) Black with a black satin all over polka dot design. c) Black with a tiny Morse code design. Dot, dash and tiny arrows. d) Bronze and blue in a tiny diamond woven pattern. e) Black with an all over printed tiny pink polka dot pattern f) Dusky pink with a tiny all over dobby design. g) Lime green with a navy blue polka dot spot design. h) Pale pink with an all over tiny dobby design. i) Pale cream with all over smallish leaf and flower pattern. There is not a lot of any of them but as they go we will hope to replace them with something of similar interest and in similar colours. That's our endeavour anyway. All at £4.25 per metre. JU90 Tutti Fruitti This cloth harks back a little to the Teddy boy era. Why that came to mind I'm not sure except that it's a cloth that was of its kind and was about in that era. It is a Bedford cord cotton; I can't be certain what it was intended to be made into because it is in three magnificent colours a) Bright yellow b) Lime green c) Orange. A very strong cloth, though not too heavy perhaps. It will make summer shorts or even a little jacket and I can see this being hard wearing enough to cover chairs or curtains for a child's room. A cloth to gladden the heart. 60 in wide £5.50 per metre.

JU91 TWO INTO ONE - FINAL CURTAIN A 50" wide cream cotton sateen with an all over traditional floral pattern not really flowers, more leaves. It is a fairly well repeating design; the repeat is probably no more than 10in or 20cm. It is in its natural state, it has been washed and finished but it still has traces of its heritage present. £7.50 per metre.

Friday The Thirteenth It's almost the end of this working Friday the thirteenth and until Carmen mentioned it was that day it hadn't really occurred to anyone; Marta was none too pleased to be reminded as she stepped gingerly out of the building towards her car. Marta keeps chickens so if they didn't lay today it would be a bad omen. I shall be leaving shortly to play with grandchildren prior to collapse.

JU92 Two T's It's always a good time to have good stuff even if it is a bit unseasonal. Two rather tasty green cotton trouserings have found their way into my keeping. There's too much for me so I want you to have some. Both with a lovely soft hand. 1) 60" wide, 2% Elastane, Pale apple green, lightly sanded twill in a medium weight.

2) 63" Sage green Bedford cord which has had the same treatment. Both £6.50 per metre.

JU93 Ungalla Continuing with the African theme is this splendid 60 in wide cotton lawn with a print that you might see wrapped around folk, and I use that word because in the countries that this reminds me of men wear sarong type garments too, although it's noticeable that they don't have baskets of fruit on their heads; the women do that and the men discuss it. A rare old mixture of colours, the background is a very dark brown, there are big flowers in cerise, orange and light purple, white leaves with purple veins, white flowers with purple centres and there are big orange leaves. A dazzling array. A lovely cloth allegedly ex M&S but I can't confirm that. If you are into big and bright you won't be disappointed. £6.00 per metre. JU94 Van Delden 60 inch wide poly/cotton, this time in a darker beige which because of the fineness in the weave and the finest coatings is actually water repellent so this makes excellent summer walking or anorak gear, very light weight: The very best Van Delden in Holland - the very best, you would pay £60+ if you bought Rohan or Northface trousers in this. £4.50 per metre. JU95 Vanilla Why do we associate vanilla with lightly coloured confectionary when the pods and seeds are dark brown? There will be a simple explanation which Kate Humble will tell us about on the Spice Trail, no doubt. We have a dark brown, fine herringbone wool/poly lightweight suiting with a beautiful hand from a great, although defunct, Yorkshire mill. 60in wide. £10.00 per metre.

JU96 Velvet Cord 60in wide, ridiculously fine cotton cord, with a velvet finish. Without lycra. a) Pale beige. b) Dark brown. With lycra. c) Pale blue. d) Navy The pale beige and brown are lighter in weight than the others. Super, smashing, great! All are £5.10 per metre.

everywhere except perhaps when certain people go abroad and certain people arrive here and behave without any consideration for anyone leads to bother. This is a sort of gladiatorial fabric I found by mistake. It is a lightweight cotton canvas in a sludgy sort of brown on one side and adding to its problems has been dyed a darker chocolate brown on the other side, thus making it a reversible cloth. Well made, with a good hand, not stiff but extremely strong and as I said earlier quite lightweight. 60 in wide. £6.00 per metre.

JU100 Winceyette 45 inch wide cotton winceyette shirting/pyjama cloth in either; a) Pink with a white scrawling floral pattern or b) Pale blue with the same white scrawling floral pattern. Not the best Lancashire winceyette by any stretch of the imagination, but very much more than adequate. £4.00 per metre.

JU101 Yeehah Not quite 60 inch wide soft cotton plaid shirting not a million miles from the traditional Viyella patterns of the past. Although not the same fabric it is 100% cotton it is quite a delicate cloth with a lovely nice hand. We have 1 colour left and it comes in shades of dusky pink and pale orange and navy blue with the same fine line over check in white. The check is approximately 2in. £4.10 per metre. JU102 You Don't Bring Me Flowers There is a touch of the Rita Hayworth about this cloth; it has the hand, almost, of a soft cotton and will drape beautifully and doesn't crease. It is in fact a loosely woven polyester and comes in a) Black ground b) White ground Both have a large and extremely colourful floral print in red, yellow, blue and green. Gerumptulous. £5.00 per metre. 60” wide

The Basics

JU97 Veronique - Taffeta 60in wide, embroidered polyester taffeta in Sapphire. The embroidery is a creeping trailing floral design in a half drop across the width. Therefore making 2 repeats across the cloth and 4 trails. The flower is elegant and there is a lot of cloth between the embroidery i.e. the embroidery is not overpowering. One of the leaves “bursts” open with velour inside. This is awfully clever and a classy cloth. £5.60 per metre.

X3 Curtain Lining

JU98 Waterproof 60 inch wide coated polyester

56in wide sol proof cotton satin, curtain lining in ecru. Will probably last as long as your curtains: £6.50 per metre.
