Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back.
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Special Message from Principal Park
Congratulations to
The Yongwha Inside! F
irst of all, I'd like to congratulate the Yonghwa Inside on its rebirth. There was an English Newspaper Club 13 years ago, and 7 years ago. So, this would officially be the third issue, not the very first. I hope this rebirth means 'forever', that this magazine becomes an annual accomplishment that the students, teachers and parents can look forward to every year. I want the members of the Younghwa Inside to work hard with passion and a strong will to make the Yonghwa Inside into a perfect work. I also hope that all of you actively engage in your writings. Remember, you are editors and reporters of our school newspaper, so it is your duty to seek and present the student's opinions in your articles. I am confident that The Yonghwa Inside will become a representative club that contributes to the school and to its fellow students. According to statistics from the Yonhap News, our Yonghwa Girls' High School has the highest ratio of students entering universities among the schools in the Nowon District. I believe this is because our school carries out a special curriculum called 'the bilingual classes' which teaches the major subjects in English. Our school also has an English debating class that broadens the students' outlooks. Our school's native teacher teaches practical English to our students with Literature classes. Recently, some selected students got the opportunity to take part in the 'Singapore Research Project.' I think these factors make our school the best. As time goes by, English is becoming more and more important to us. Many of the official documents are written in English. Even the Internet terms that we use every day are mostly in English. This means English has definitely become a global language. Since our students will actively participate in the global stage in the near future, being confident when it comes to English is an essential element to acquire. Korean students tend to study only writing and reading, not speaking and listening. So, harmonizing these four basic English skills is the most immediate task at hand. If the educational environment provides students with proper English education, then students can take a step forward in becoming highly competitive people. To better your life, concentrate on studying. I hope all our students become people truly needed in this global society.

☺A Letter from our Foreign Teacher
If I had one piece of advice to give any student, in any country, from any culture, it would be this: make time to do what you love. In an earlier interview, I mentioned this idea, but I want to explain it in greater detail here. As a student in Korea, your life revolves mainly around studying and your family responsibilities. It is often hard to find time to engage in hobbies, but I believe it is vitally important that you do so. All of us have some silly hobbies (I like watching bad movies and I love to go dancing, even though I'm not that good at it), but we all also have at least one hobby that is not just a hobby, but our passion. Your passion might be playing a musical instrument, a particular sport, reading, fishing, hiking, or anything! How do you know what is your passion? Just imagine if you were very rich and never had to work. What would you do for fun? Some of you might be tempted to answer that you would just watch TV, sleep, listen to music or surf the internet, but I don't think that can be your passion. Those are all passive activities. They are enjoyable, but they are not engaging your own creative mind. Your passion should be something that you cannot imagine not doing. For me, my two passions are traveling and writing. Many (nearly all) of my friends in America now have nice homes, families and good jobs. I sometimes wonder if my life might have been better if I stayed in Kentucky and never went out into the world, but I realize that my soul would wither away if I didn't get to experience other cultures. I don't think my friends have made a mistake, but it would be a mistake for me. In my life, I have given up many things to have the opportunity to travel, and even though it hasn't made my life easier, I am a happier, more fulfilled person for doing so. My other passion is writing and I think this might be a good example for you. I write all the time. I write short stories, sonnets, essays, long poems, letters and novels. Some of my
writing is pretty good, some of it is terrible, but I enjoy all of it. My goal is to be a published author, but that might never happen. And, you know what? That is ok. Even if I don't achieve my goal, I am working with my own passion and that is what makes me happy. What if you don't know what your passion is? Then you need to find out! Turn off the TV and get involved in some activities! Until I started to travel, I didn't realize that it was my passion! Sometimes, we don't know what we will love until we try it, but you must live an active life to discover new things. As students, your lives are full of many things that are beyond your control. Even when you go to college and beyond, you will have responsibilities that will take up much of your free time. However, it is extremely important that you find time for your passion. It will help relieve your stress, it will give you energy and boost your confidence. When we see people that are engaged in their passion they have a special glow about them and these are the happiest kinds of people. Some people might think that 'my passion is too silly' or 'I just don't have enough time for my passion' or 'I can never succeed at my passion'. These people will always feel unhappy, even if they become rich and famous because they are denying a part of themselves. If you love to sing, but your friends say you are a bad singer, so what? Sing! If you love to paint, but it is not as good as other students' paintings, it doesn't matter! Paint! If you want to be an actress, but other people think it is a silly hobby, who cares? Make your own movies! If you don't have any idea what your passion might be, go find out! So, I want you, my wonderful, talented, smart, beautiful students to think about and understand or discover your passions. I believe this is a key to helping you keep a balanced, happy life.
Good luck and go explore! from.
Brian

Yonghwa Girls' High School held the 6th Annual Yonghwa Health Race on April 24th, 2009 at Seoul Grand Park. The course was about an hour long. Students had to get stamps from teachers while running the track as signs of completing the race. At first, many students, especially the first graders who had never been in the race, were full of complaints. However, after running the whole distance, they got a sense of satisfaction and achievement. There was an award ceremony for the top 3 runners in each grade. Not only the students but also the teachers who ran in the race got prizes. It was a good experience, having a day out in nature for a change. We just hope it doesn't fall on the week before the midterm exams every year!

2nd Graders’
Training Retreat
Kim Sung-Eun(21003)
July 16th (first day) At a time earlier than usual, Yongwha students gathered on the school field to go on their last school retreat. At 8:30, we got on our buses and left with our homeroom teachers and classmates. Halfway there, we stopped at a the rest area and ate lunch. Finally, we arrived at the 'Flower Village' (Kkottongnae) which was huge. We were divided up into two teams, called 'hope' and 'love'. We were given training suits and name tags. We listened to the instructions and regulations concerning the Flower Village and their facilities. We also learned 'I love you' which is saying hello in the Flower Village. We were taken to the 'Place of Love' to meet the large family of the Flower Village. We felt a little awkward because we did not know how to act or get along with them. We sang songs and massaged them and gradually we became closer. There were cases in which some members of the Flower Village refused to talk to the students because they were afraid that they would feel hurt when we left. I almost cried because I could sympathize with their loneliness.

Mr. Flower Ring came with a beautiful flower ring and handed us that ring. He also wanted to take pictures with us. We found out that the flower rings, which were made of ringer lines, was his way of expressing his affection towards us. The flower ring is the Flower Village's special product. It was so surprisingly beautiful that it was hard to believe that he made it himself. Feeding the Flower Village family members was the last activity for our first day. When we left, I felt sad thinking how they would be left all alone in the room. In the evening the students experienced pretending physical disabilities to understand real disabled people. Even though it was a short experience, I felt incredibly uncomfortable. I was able to understand the disabled better with this short, but intense experience.
July 17th (Second day) On the second day, after having breakfast, we went to the 'Place of Love'. We were so happy to see the family we cared for yesterday. We did our best because we knew that we would soon be apart. It was really hard for us to say good-bye because we felt that we have become "one big family". Coming out of the 'Place of Love,' we realized the unmeasurable love we received from them. We had time to select some activities that we wanted to do. There were activities where we wrote our death wills and went into a coffin, which was called 'newly born.' There was an activity called 'talking with the hands' which we learned the sign language, and activities such as 'a cappella' and 'domino.' At night we had recreation with SungBok Middle School. We watched many performances. The shouts and cheering were in its climax when our school teachers dressed up and danced. Each class gathered together to dance and played games. We felt that we became even closer.
July 18th (last day) On our last day, students ate breakfast and wrote their impressions about the program. Representative from each class read the writings. All of them expressed their feelings so frankly that everyone laughed and cried as they read. We watched a video clip of us participating in those activities. Seeing ourselves serving others, our hearts got warm. After watching the video clip, a representative read 'A Short Pledge of Living up to Action' then there was the award ceremony. Returning after long 3 days of activities, students were different people from who they were 3 days ago. Our hearts felt warm. We learned how to share love and how to treat other people without prejudice. It was a valuable time where we got to experience things firsthand and not just through some media or an abstract thought in our minds.

FESTIVAL Choi Ji-Hye (11035) The long awaited Yonghwa Festival finally took place on August 28th. Although we had our usual classes in the morning, our minds and hearts were filled with anticipation and excitement for the coming festival!
The opening celebration started with the beautiful melody of the Yonghwa Orchestra & Band, the excitement of Samulnori (Korean traditional music), the powerful dance of SM, and Chunsung's performance. Above all, the best of the best was when the teachers dressed up in our school uniforms and danced to the music on stage. It was just unforgettable!

용화영자신문cs3.indd 10
After the opening ceremony, students enjoyed the festival on their own with their friends. There were many games and food booths. RCY(Red Cross Youth) prepared sex education for students. Korea Youth Assiociation(HanBeulDan) worked to distinguish whether visiting students from other schools had possibile symptoms of Swine Flu (Influenza A). The Press Club(Penetrable) surveyed the students, while the Book Club, Photo Club, Science Club, and Animation Club all sold food and handmade products. The Proper Guidance Club prepared a corner where the members of the club got hit by water balloons. For classes with special themes, they opened a board game cafe and a ghost house. It was so popular that you had to make reservations in advance, and students were willing to wait in long lines just to get in.

There were many other booths as well, and students taking part in the club activities worked until 6 p.m. The students confessed that it was all worthwhile and meaningful. In the evening, there was DadongJae. A singing group named Happy Chair was supposed to come, but didn't. Everyone was disappointed, but GNG, ChunSung, On the Wing, SM, Coma, and other group and performers participated in the Festival. Their great stage manner and splendid appearance were enough to captivate the eyes of the audience. The performances really made you to think 'Just how many hours did they put in to this?' Behind all the magnificent and brilliant performances and events, there were people who made all this possible. Without them, the festival wouldn't have happened. They are the 20th Yonghwa Student Association 'Superman' and 'YBS' (Yonghwa Broadcasting System). This was my first Yonghwa Festival. To tell you the truth, I didn't expect that much from it. But it turned out to be much more than I had expected. I'm sure that next year's Yonghwa Festival will be even more exciting, filled with even better and even more sophisticated programs.
Yonghwa Festival is the BEST!!

rom September 7th to 13th, thirteen students among the 1st graders at Yonghwa Girls' High School went to Singapore for the 2009 Yonghwa GLS(Global Leadership Scholarship) Program. The students were divided into 4 groups and researched on 4 different topics regarding Singapore. The topics were: 'The Influence of Culture on Economics', 'The Korean Wave in Singapore', 'Proper Ways to Control Water Supply' and 'Education in Singapore'. All the groups prepared for the research for about two months prior to the departure. All the planning, making contacts, the preliminary research in Korea, and the actual research in Singapore were planned and executed by the students themselves without any help from others. It was definitely a great opportunity for all these students to experience different cultures in Singapore. Each group gave their final presentation on November 14th at Jip-Hyun Gwan. The Singapore research has helped all the students involved to be more responsible and confident.

Ways to Promote More Student Participation for
Jip-Hyun Academy Kim In-Young (21107)
As a way of reducing the cost for private education, Yonghwa Girls' High School is carrying out a project called "Making a School with No Private Education". One part of this project is the Jip-Hyun Academy, which is an academy provided at school at low prices. School teachers and some private institution teachers give several lectures after regular school hours. However, not many students are taking these classes. Students go to private institutions because they can get more individual attention and guidance, which is hard to expect in school classes. One student said, "Though I'm taking the regular after school classes which is supposed to be like a private teaching, I see no difference from the regular school classes. So I naturally feel hesitant to take Jip-Hyun Academy as well." So, in order to give a better impression of Jip-Hyun Academy, the school needs to carefully look at the reasons why some students lack interest and find out ways to improve its weak points. First of all, some classes are closed because there are not enough students registered. So even if there are students
who desperately want to take those classes, they can't! However, in private institutions, there are classes with only 2 or 3 students, and students prefer those classes because they can get closer supervision and instruction from the teacher than in large, crowded classes. Therefore, the school needs to open classes even if there are only 2~3 students registered. In Jip-Hyun Academy, most of the classes fail to attract students. Only a few classes with popular teachers are crowded everytime. Setting an exhibition lecture is another way to attract students. Students who are interested in a lecture but not sure about whether to take the class or not because they don't know the teacher will be able to experience the sample lecture and decide. Exhibition lectures will allow additional students to register and classes that were about to be closed will have more students.

OPINIONS Debate☻
Topic: Euthanasia Choi Hye-Yeon (21132) On February, 2009, an appellate court upheld a lower court's ruling allowing the country's first mercy killing. The Seoul High Court ordered the hospital to remove life support from a 76-year-old woman who had been comatose for a year. The motion, or the topic of the debate is "If a terminally ill person decides that they wish to end their life, it is acceptable for others to assist them." Do you agree or disagree?
Background Information Euthanasia, or mercy killing, means killing people with the motivation of kindness and ending suffering. The word originated in Greece and it means 'beautiful and dignified death'. It is has been a contentious issue in many countries for a long time. Euthanasia can be either passive or active. The passive variety involves withholding drugs and life support machines when a patient's condition is hopeless. Active euthanasia means actually killing the patient by administering a lethal substance, usually by injection or oral dose. When a person is euthanized, someone such as a doctor helps them die by making available to them some kind of fatal drug or deadly gas. It's called "assisted suicide". In those cases, the doctor doesn't actually administer the drug or gas but only provides it for the patient's use. Most people sympathize with a person who wants to end their pain and suffering, but for several reasons most governments are reluctant to make euthanasia legal. As of 2002, doctor-assisted suicide was legal only in the Netherlands, Switzerland, the US state of Oregon, and in Australia's Northern Territory. Those in favor of euthanasia argue that maintaining a quality of life is more important than depending on medical equipment to extend their life artificially. If asked, most people will say that someone who is suffering from an incurable disease would be better off if they died. Also, if we acknowledge brain death legally, we can use the braindead patient's organs for organ transplantation under the consent of the family, thus giving new lives to other people. In addition, treating patients who don't have a chance of recovery is not only the family and hospital staff's economic loss but also society as well. However, those who are against euthanasia insist that it should not be legal. First, they think euthanasia, whether it be voluntary or involuntary, is a criminal act of murder because they believe that decision regarding the life of a human being depends on God. Second, there is no certainty about recovery. In some cases, the patients who were considered fatal dramatically lengthened their lifespan. Third, euthanasia can be abused with the poor because they have difficulty supporting patients and paying the medical bills.

☺OPINIONS : Debate
However, a family is a unit of common destiny and it also has an obligation to endure and overcome difficulties when a family member is in pain. Lastly, euthanasia can also be used negatively for money such as the blackmarket organ trade(the illicit sale or smuggling of organs). But the result of euthanasia statistics that have been researched in some areas of Korea show that the euthanasia agreement rate was very high. Almost every supporter of euthanasia also insisted in the freedom of death and argued why it should be stopped if the permission forms did not contain not only the patient family's agreement but also that of the patients. While laws differ from country to country, there are always prohibitions against the taking of life. In France and Germany, it is illegal not to assist a person whose life is in danger. Britain mandates up to 14 years in prison for aiding and abetting a suicide. At the moment, euthanasia is a controversial subject in our society. There are many scientific, moral and religious issues that can be discussed with this topic. So it is very important for us to find a sound judgement about this topic.
After Reading (Let’s think about this topic!) Q1) Euthanasia has been debated for a long time and is still debated even now. Why is that? Q2) Those who argue against euthanasia think it can be abused in treating the poor, Why do they think so? Q3) Do you agree or disagree with this topic? Why?
Opinions Hye yeon:
I think people should allow euthanasia if there is no solution or cure and the patients really wants to die because their pain is unbearable. As people have a right to live, they also have a right to die. We have to listen to them and respect their right to die.
Bo-ra:
Religion is not the only reason why I think euthanasia should be forbidden. If euthanasia is permitted, it would damage the dignity of human life. Also there is always the chance of a miracle for every sufferer.
Words Euthanasia (mercy killing) is the practice of killing someone who is very ill and it is believed they will never get better in order to end their suffering, usually done at their request or with their consent.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE☻
PLANTING TREES IN MONGOLIA, PREVENTING DESERTIFICATION Korea-Mongolia Green Road Project Joung Jieun (11431) ‘Korea-Mongolia Youth Green Road Project’ was held by National Youth Center of Korea from May 11th to 17th. It was held for the purpose of preventing desertification of the Earth by actually planting trees in Mongolia. Five Yonghwa Girls' High School first grade students- Kim Hyeon Gee, Park Soo Young, Lee Si Yeon, Joung Ji Eun, Ji Hye Eun - went to Mongolia for this volunteer work. Actually, about 30 students gathered from all over the country so having five students from the same high school was actually amazing. The project progressed smoothly for seven days.
# Day 1
The students, including the Yonghwa students, were educated by a specialist at the Cheonan National Youth Center of Korea about the seriousness of desertification getting worse all over the world. We also learned about the culture and the overall characteristics of Mongolia. According to him, Korea is the only country actively participating in planting trees in Mongolia, where desertification is taking place, and we have been continuing this project for about 10 years. After that, we drove for about 2 hours and arrived at Incheon International Airport and made a nonstop flight to Mongolia. After 3 hours, we found ourselves in Chinggis Khann International airport at 1 a.m. Then we drove for an hour to get to The International Children’s Center. The Mongolians there warmly welcomed us and we happily went to bed, not knowing the next day’s hard work.
# Day 2~3 We moved to Bayangnore where we were supposed to plant trees. During the 6-hour drive, the only thing we could see out the window was nothing but a vast plain. Goats, horses, and sheep freely fed on grass. We could actually see the horizon which is almost impossible in Korea because we are surrounded by buildings. Admiring the beautiful scenery of Mongolia, we finally arrived in Bayangnore. Bayangnore was originally full of lakes and rivers ('Bayangnore' means a land with plenty of water in Mongolian), but all the lakes are almost dry and people there are running short of water.

☺STUDENT EXPERIENCE
When we arrived there, we started planting trees with some of Mongolian students. We dug deep holes in the ground, planted trees, and watered them. We learned that it is hard to recover the environment whereas destroying it is so easy. After the job, we could not wash ourselves properly because the whole village was running out of water. Again, we felt the value of water. After the hard work of planting trees, we had cultural exchange with the Mongolian students, showing each of our talents, and got much closer.
# Day 4 On our fourth day, after watering the trees we planted for two days, we traveled to Alseungtasarhae to visit a real desert. Because Bayangnore is so dry, we have to water the trees as much as possible in order not to kill them. After six hours of driving, we finally arrived in Alseugtasarhae. It was getting dark, so we went to a desert nearby and saw the countless number of shining stars in the sky. We slept in Mongolian traditional house, called a 'Ger', that night.
# Day 5 The next day, after spending the night in a Ger, we woke up at 4 a.m. to climb up a nearby mountain. The mountain was so steep and was full of rocks. Because the village we stayed was about 1,000m above sea level, as we moved up the mountain, we were at about 2,000m above sea level. Around 6 a.m., we saw a beautiful sunrise there. That afternoon, we stopped by the national park, Gorkhi-Terelj. There, we were amazed to see such beautiful scenery. It was totally different from other Mongolian regions we visited. The entire ground was green with grass and a thick forest was covering the area. Also, strong winds formed the grotesque rocks, which were another great view. It seemed as if all the trees and grass were whispering to us that we can actually save the Earth from desertification, if we take extra care.
# Day 6
This was the final day in Mongolia. We visited some famous historical places of Mongolia, such as The Natural Museum, which is one of the world’s top five natural museums. Next, we visited the one and only department store there. According to the guide, we should always be careful of our bags because the place was full of pickpockets. It is even said that the people in the department store are 50% customers and 50% pickpockets. After buying some souvenirs there, we went straight to the Chinggis Khann International Airport and finally arrived at Seoul. We were all tired but it was truly a memorable experience for us.
Volunteering in Mongolia was truly meaningful work and we wish everyone would realize the seriousness of global warming. In some parts of the world, people suffer from water shortage and severely hot weather, while others are enjoying a comfortable life with superfluous water, cars, air-conditioners, and computers. With a little effort, we can avoid wasting energy and help prevent global warming. Always remember that we, Koreans, can be the next victim.

He tried to promote re- blame President Lee is that they think he stands on the opformative policies such as the Balanced Area Development posite side of people rather than with them. Policy and the National Welfare Pension System. Despite his efforts, they didn't succeed. This was because he was frequently confronted by the National Assembly and the media. As a result, he took criticism for being 'the head of colorless government'. In addition, because of his controversial remarks, many in the public judged him inappropriate and too different from other presidents. On the other hand, the present President, Lee Myeongbak, is evaluated as someone who doesn't reflect public opinion in carrying out policies. Many of his policies (such like opening the market for American beef and building water canals) proposed by President Lee are often strongly opposed by the public.
People desire a president who delights in hearing public opinions and engages in politics with the citizens. Ex-president Roh Moo-hyun paid attention to people and had friendly image supported by the people. However, he lacked the strong leadership of President Lee Myeong-bak. Presidents are not only the representatives of their people, but the leaders of their nation. They should lead a nation the right way and judge national affairs wisely. As a result, people will think that presidents are pure and attentive to people at the same time. The people want a president who has strong leadership and empathy to lead our country successfully.

Memorable Interview with
Woon-Bong
Teacher
Jung Eun-Bin (11430), Ji Hye-Eun (11432) I`m sure you guys all know the handsome science teacher at Yonghwa! Yes!!! He is Woon-Bong teacher. We wanted to know more about him, because his classes are always fun and exciting. We wanted to know about his teaching know-how. Furthermore, we wanted to know about his life philosophy and his lifestyle. So we decided to interview him. We prepared some questions in advance.
1. Do you have any memorable episodes with students at school? When I was a homeroom teacher of third year students, my students were not very interested in their studies, and many majored in art and music. So no one in my class stayed to study in after school classes. I thought I needed to do something. So, I attracted some students in to the other class with chocolate and candy. This system worked effectively and both the students and their teacher got satisfying results.
2. How can we be tall like you?
Never be picky eaters and get enough sleep.
3. What do you think of science education in Korea? The level of science technology is different from field to field. However, thanks to great scientists and their exhaustive efforts on their studies and research, I am sure that all the scientific fields in Korea are on the top of the lists. One thing that makes my heart ache is that most teenagers nowadays are not interested in such pure science.
4. What is the MOST important thing in life for you? First, Belief. Plus, choosing the right wife or husband is also important because he or she is going to be your partner for your whole life.
5. What was your dream as a child? I wanted to be a geography teacher or a sailor.
6. What are your special teaching methods? I just prepare for my classes a lot. Since science is difficult for many students, I try to present and deliver the content in the easiest way possible. Also, I try to make humorous remarks during classes in order to keep the students awake and not feeling bored.
7. Can you please introduce yourself to us? I am from Daegue, Kyungsangdo. I love to fish. I enjoy playing baseball and my blood type is O. My life's motto is "Belief.“ I am good at making cod fish stew. I am also good at complimenting others.

Choi Ji-Eun (21130) One of the places where students go everyday is the school snack bar. Students go to the snack bar not only when they are hungry, but it's a must-stop-by after P.E class. I interviewed the snack bar's owner. He was hesitant at first, but when I asked questions he answered kindly.
When is the opening hour?
I open the snack bar at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
How do you provide the products?
Everyday, I order products from Lotte, Crown, Orion and so on. Also I buy bread and some snacks from a few chosen companies. Usually I receive the products early in the morning, at about 6:30. And some popular products are delivered twice a day.
What are some difficulties in running school snack bar?
It's really frustrating when students take a long time in choosing their snacks when the snack bar is crowded. Besides, many students yell loudly and blame things on me. Then, I go crazy.
Are there anything comments you want make to students?
Are there anything comments you want make to students? I want to tell everyone.
"PLEASE. Don't yell too loudly! Have little patience!!" Also tell me anytime when you have any complaints.

Exclusive Interview - Advices from Brian Kim Ju-Ok (21007)
Do you have any wish for Yonghwa students? I hope that students study hard in order to prepare for college, but the thing that is more important is that students should do what they really want to do. I believe all students have something that they are passionate about in their minds. I mean a hobby that they really love. I believe this can help you release your stress.
Do you have any tips for studying English? Do you have any advice for Yonghwa Inside? Congratulations, Yonghwa Inside! First, help each other. For example, read each others’ articles and fix the mistakes. Tell which area needs improvement or further explanation. Second, have a creative thought and be responsible, and then, Yonghwa Inside will develop into the best club in YONGHWA!
Many students listen to English music, watch TV shows and that helps practice listening. But I think students should often practice speaking and writing. For example, if you really like American TV show or surfing American Internet sites, you can type a message about it which will help your writing. And try to talk to people and respond in English and practice speaking with your friends. Even though students might feel embarrassed, a little bit of practice everyday will be very helpful.

The Twilight
Series Lee So-Yeon (11319)
Have you heard of "Twilight?" The movie was released last year. Those of you who saw the movie may know what it is about, but for the people who have not read or seen it, here are some short summaries. "New Moon," "Eclipse,"and "Breaking Dawn" are also parts of the Twilight series, which have not come out as movies yet, but they will. Here are their stories :
“Twilight”
This is the most famous of the four books. It depicts Bella Swan, a 17-year-old, normal, human girl, coming to live in the drizzly town of Forks, Washington. There, she meets Edward Cullen, a so-called "vegetarian" vampire, who is more than a hundred years old. They fall in love despite the vampire-human boundary. This is a love story with a bite. "Twilight" creates a world of fantasies.
“New Moon”
Bella and Edward enjoy good days as a vampire-human couple. However, Edward suddenly decides to leave Bella, afraid of the danger he and his family might bring her. Bella misses Edward more and more every day, but someone enters her life-Jacob Black, who tells Bella about vampires. Meanwhile Edward thinks that a vampire named "Victoria" has killed Bella so he goes to the vampires' royal family, the Volturi, to kill himself. Victoria is the friend of James, a vampire who was killed by Edward.
“Eclipse”
Edward and Bella have promised never to leave each other again, and once again they are happy. But fate does not wait to give them a chance to be peaceful. Victoria, who feels vengeful towards Edward because of James' death, decides to take revenge and attack Bella. Will bella survive the deadly Victoria, or will her adventures end here?
“Breaking dawn”
Edward agrees to change Bella into a vampire on one condition which is that she marries him first. Bella agrees and gets married and they have a baby girl named “Renesmee.” While Bella gives birth to Renesmee, she nearly dies but Edward saves her by injecting vampire venom into her and making her a vampire. There has been a vampire child named “Irina”. She found that Bella, Jacob and Renesmee had been hunting, so she goes to the Volturi and tell about them. So the Volturi plans to pay a visit to Bella and Edward. Are you curious about the next story? Then open the books and READ!

The Value of paintings Choi Jung Min (21031)
In the first half of 2009, the drama 내조의 여왕, which recorded over 30%(max) of program ratings, was a big sensation in Korea. The happenings in Queens’ Food while wives have fierce power battles for their husbands' promotion, show paintings as symbols of wealth and as a means of bribery. For them, the director of an art gallery is the most honorable kind of duty and a virtuoso work is the index of their position. Some sumptuous paintings are worth over one hundred million won. In this article, the world’s three most expensive paintings will be introduced.
#1 : <No.5> by Jackson Pollock Jackson Pollock is a representative painter of American culture after WWⅡ. He created a new painting technique called 'action painting' based on abstract expressionism. Some scientists say this abstract painting actually contains a scientific principle : the chaotic fractal. This painting was sold to Mexican businessman David Martinez for 140 million dollars in 2006.
#2 : <Woman 3> by Willem de Kooning Kooning is also one of the great artists of American abstract expressionism. He performed in the same era with Jackson Pollock, but, his paintings are distinguishable from Jackson’s brushwork. Jackson drew his paintings with his own technique called “action painting”, but Kooning did not. Instead, he made strokes with an energetic and speedy brush and used glowing colors. He earned fame with a series of “woman”. “Woman 3” was sold in 2006 to the famous hedge fund manager Steven Cohen at a price of 137.5 million dollars. Kooning was born in the Netherlands and he immigrated to America as an illegal laborer, but he overcame these difficulties and became one of the masters. However, the end of his life was not romantic. Like Jackson, he was addicted to alcohol and also suffered from Alzheimers.

#3 : <Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1> by Gustav Klimt Gustav Klimt’s paintings are familiar to us, for example, <Kiss>. His paintings’ features are splendid with gold-plated decorations showing a woman’s sensuality. Klimt drew lots of portraits of women, and the women introduced in his paintings were enchantresses. His drawings are popular because of their brilliant qualities and erotic atmosphere. Actually, he was single throughout his life, but his love life was very colorful. Bauer, the model of this painting was also one of his lovers. Gustav Klimt was born poor in Austria, but he was talented so he could accomplish his dream. This painting was sold in 2004 for the price of 135 million dollars. Some selected paintings are sold at unbelievable prices, but others are not. There is vast price gap between paintings. Where does this gap come from? Who estimates the value of paintings? What is the standard of good paintings and why does the wealthy buy these paintings for such high prices? I once read an article about the standard in deciding the value of paintings. In this document, the writer mentioned five elements : Reality , Metaphor, Historicity, Stability of Emotion, and Creativity. How is it similar to real objects? Does it contain a philosophic implication? When was it made or is it unique? Does it make you feel comfortable? Finally, does it create a new trend or era? The painting does not have to be adjusted to all elements, but the painting should satisfy more than one factor to be considered a valuable piece of art. These are not strict truths, but somehow they solve our curiosity. As time goes by, the importance of human ability is getting more significant. This means the metaphors, stability of emotion and creativity which only human, not machines, can do. The techniques following the form of objects have been taken over by the camera field. A person does not have the ability to control time. However, there is no limit on human potential. So it is this field that humans should explore. This concept is not only restricted to paintings, but also it is a major goal for all of us. It already appears in our life. The idea of emotional marketing is no longer a stranger to us. Lots of labels use this strategy, even Hyundai has been overcoming the economic crisis with it. This is one of the ideal forms of combining factors of human ability, metaphor, stability of emotion and creativity. The Fashion industry seems to express : This is not a simple cloth. If you wear it, you wear fashion. Throughout many fashion shows and fancy advertisements in fashion magazines, clothing companies want to send a message like this. This one sentence involves the intention of human ability. To create a sumptuous masterpiece in any part of your life, you should not stop being a real human.

I=Criminal Investigation drama M=Medical drama Nowadays, American dramas are popular in Korea as well as in the USA. This ranking list illustrates that popularity. There are 11 dramas in the Top 20 shows, not including sitcoms and show programs - for example, American Idol and Dancing With the Stars. Although these two programs are so powerful that dramas are pushed out of the high ranking, dramas still occupy more than half of the list. Most of dramas are shows that have existed for a long time. 'The Mentalist' is the only new drama which has been televised since September, 2008. It is an exception. Not only the criminal investigation dramas, but also medical dramas have a great popularity this season. There are 3 medical dramas in this list : Grey's Anatomy, 24, House in America. Compared with those of USA, there are 종합병원, 외과의사 봉달희, 뉴하트, 하얀거탑 in Korea. Let's take a closer look into "House" and "하얀거탑"

“House,” The drama got its name from the main character, Gregory House. He can be characterized as a "bad man". He is eccentric, stubborn, and odd. For instance, he doesn't wear a doctor's coat. He often overdoses himself with a painkiller because of pain in his leg. It seems that he is addicted. Also, he hates being intimate with other people, so he is malicious to patients and his coworkers. However, he cherishes his patients inwardly, and his ability as a doctor is great. His bitter actions seem attractive. We cannot hate him. He charms people. He treats the patients who cannot be cured in other departments. In every episode, he takes patients who have symptoms with unknown origins, then he observes their symptoms and listens to them (he usually puts them down with threats). Finally, House thinks of a way to cure them. Eventually, the patients get well. We should understand that it is important to be considerate in listening to patients.
Many people recollect this drama even today. It was originally a Japanese novel, and its literary value is highly rated. The summary is like this: 장준혁 and 최도영 are friends. 장준혁 is poor, but has great potential as a doctor. He wants to succeed in life. He flatters high officials to be promoted to a chief surgeon. While 장준혁 is focused on his success, one patient dies because of his carelessness. However, 장준혁, who becomes a chief surgeon denies his responsibility. 최도영 criticizes him. In the end, 장준혁 loses a lawsuit and he gets cancer. Eventually 장준혁 dies and donates his corpse to the hospital. This drama succeeded without the element of 'romance'. This is an exceptional case in Korean drama-we usually think that love is indispensable. And the attraction of this drama is that there are neither "absolute good" nor "absolute bad" characters. People cannot belong to only one side of the two. It describes life. 장준혁 is true to his desire. On the other hand, he shows his weaknesses. We cannot blame him. He is a mirror of ourselves. We can become like him. We can understand him. In this respect, it is a 'medical drama', but has 'medical science' and 'law' as means of expressing our life in this drama. It is a story about the life of people and their desires.

Do you know what a ‘ HOOK SONG ’ is? Kim Bo Kyung(11305) Do you like music? Do you like to sing a song or listen to music? All over the world, many people are interested in music. Music can make people happy, sad, cheerful, sentimental and so on. Nowadays, most Korean music have common traits, such as addictive melodies and lyrics. Today, people call a song that has an addictive melody a ‘Hook Song.’ 'Hook' means ‘to attract people.’ So ‘Hook Song’ means that people can easily remember and notice its melody and lyrics. There are many examples of Hook Songs. 2NE1's Fire, Super Junior's Sorry Sorry, Girls' Generation's Gee, Wonder girls' Tell me, Nobody and more. Take the case of Sorry Sorry sung by Super Junior, we can easily understand what a Hook Song is. In Sorry Sorry, the lyrics 'Sorry Sorry' are repeated 16 times and addictive highlight melody is repeated continuously. In addition, they use similar sounding words, such as 'sorry' and 'shawty'(American slang which means ‘pretty lady’). Another song, in Gee sung by Girls' Generation, ‘gee’ is stated as many as 52 times; also, the same melody is repeated constantly. ‘Hook Songs’ have some good aspects, such as making people feel more energetic and high-spirited. Also, we can easily sing along. Additionally, Hook Songs are a global trend. However, they have some bad aspects, too. Hook Songs can create bad quality popular music. Many of the popular songs sound very similar. People can easily get tired of this music. Some musicians are concerned about this phenomenon and call this the 'lyrics disappearing generation.' I hope that not too many singers will keep following the trend. They should strive to make new music with creativity and high quality.

ANGELS &
DEMONS May 2009
Chang Ji-Young(21028) At last, one of the 2009's most anticipated movies, Angels & Demons came out on May 14th. The movie was the center of a lot of attention because of its story and the main character Robert Langdon, which was played by Tom Hanks. Also, the fact that the movie is based on the novel Angels & Demons, written by Dan Brown, is enough to catch people's interest and make them to go see the movie. As many people know, the novel is a prequel to the Da Vinchi Code. However, the movie was made as a sequel to the Da Vinchi Code. You need to consider this when you see the movie. The movie starts with the murder of Leonardo Vetra, who worked as a scientist in CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) to discover antimatter. When his friend, Maximilian Kohler found his body, he asks Robert Langdon for help, and he calls the deadman's adopted daughter, Vittoria Vetra, who also works at CERN. Right after Langdon recognizes the symbol of the Illumitami on the dead man's stomach; they become aware of the theft of the antimatter. Vittoria and Robert go to Vatican City, where the Pope recently died, to prevent the antimatter from exploding. When they get there, however, they find four cardinals, who are expected to be the next Pope, missing. The two think it may be related to The Illumitami, and make their way to rescue the four cardinals and to eliminate the antimatter. While looking for the four cardinals, they find hints that show where each of the four cardinals may be killed. Movie goers say that the movie is good, compared to the previous one. But they think the movie isn't good as they expected from reading the novel.

CULTURE AROUND THE WORLD☻
Song Ji-Yeon(21118) The students in California, USA will study with digital textbooks instead of paper textbooks. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California, announced that paper textbooks will be gradually eliminated starting in September and will introduce 'The Digital Textbook Initiative'. Digital textbooks will be introduced first in Math and Science. The students will study at their own computers by typing in free digital textbooks. Digital textbooks will be introduced first to the latest scientific theories because digital textbooks are updated quickly and easily. The State Government announced that more and more schools will receive textbooks and all subjects will be expanded soon. Eliminating the paper textbooks is going to reduce $350.000.000 from the state's expenses. However, some people suggest that low-income students without computers would be left out. Of course , there are merits and demerits. The first merit is that students don't have to carry heavy textbooks to school. The second is that students can buy other things which would benefit them because they don't have to buy new textbooks every year. The demerit is that the students' eyesight might get bad. If they use computers for a long time, their eyesight could become weak. Therefore, the State Government has to find a solution for this issue.

☺AROUND THE WORLD
Unique Colleges Around the World
Swiss Hotel
Management School Lee Alan (11321) Are you interested in humanitarian service, agriculture, cooking or painting? Do you want to study in a foreign country? Nowadays, the opportunities and possibilities of going abroad and studying are more common and the choices more broad. Here is a world-wide school and college guide to help you attain your goal. I’m going to introduce the Swiss Hotel Management School(SHMS) to you. SHMS is located at Western side of Switzerland, near Leman. A long time ago, this school building used to be a hotel, which opened in 1905, but now it has become the first campus of the school. SHMS opened in 1992, but contrary to other hotel management schools, it is showing great increases in students every year. Now, SHMS has more than 2,200 students. For this increase in enrollment, SHMS bought two more hotel buildings and remodeled them. One of the special things in this campus is the rail-way, which connects these two campus buildings. SHMS’s curriculum begins with two and a half years of diploma courses. First year students learn about serving, treating customers, and kitchen management. During the second year they learn marketing and accounting for the hotel business. Also, every year they have 4~6months of internship for the future hotel and restaurant certificates. In this internship course the students are paid 200Frs(a Swiss Franc) or 1,500,000won per month. After all this, students get BA and MA degrees, “Our school’s strong point is the attention on practical business. All students start from the house keeping, reception, even party planning. So we learn the small details and experience all the work that happens inside a hotel. This means we are ready to adjust for real business at anytime.” Said SHMS’s Korean student, Beong-Young Kim(22). One more piece of advice for readers is that you should be familiar with French in advance, because the local language is French, although all the courses are in English. “SHMS has 60 different nationalities. So we have more diversity of cultures than any other school in the world. This point is important at the service field. So we make sure that our students can offer the right service to lots of different kinds of people.” Said SHMS’s director. As a result, SHMS will be the best place to learn about hotel business with foreign people. Also, it is placed within a beautiful view of Switzerland, and this will help you to study with more passion in the gorgeous nature there.

Yonghwa Inside_ No.1 December 21, 2009
EPILOGUE☻
김 인 영 (1기)
It's been a long journey. I never thought publishing a magazine would take such a long time. I also feel sorry for Ms. Lee in that I haven't been a well-organized head student. It was our first sailing so we didn't know how to handle a ship. We've gone through lots of trials and errors and learned a lot from it. Hope we'll do better next time. Though it was hard, it was also a great experience. It really was worthwhile. Love you Yonghwa Inside!!
이 예 슬 (1기)
It has been a great experience for me. Through the efforts we have made this year, I found that making a magazine is really difficult. But it was rewarding, too. Although our first magazine is incomplete in many ways, I hope you enjoy it! Thank you Teacher Lee, and everyone in the Yonghwa Inside!
송 지 연 (1기)
Writing articles in English is interesting. I felt as if I have become a journalist. Whenever I finished writing an article, I was always full of joy. It will last as an unforgettable memory for my highschool days. I recommend that you join this club. There will be no regrets.
장 지 영 (1기)
I'm really glad that the Yonghwa Inside is finally coming out. We, the members of this club have put in a lot of effort! I hope you guys like the newspaper.
최 정 민 (1기)
Wow~ It is hard to believe that my article is in the newspaper! It was hard, but it's a worthwhile endeavor.
김 소 희 (1기)
I met many people through this club activity, so I am very happy. English writing is very difficult for me. But my friends and Shin Ae Teacher helped me a lot. Thank you for everything.
최 지 은 (1기)
I don't like writing English and I'm not good at English. However, I have written an article in English. I'm glad I had this chance.
김 성 은 (1기)
Writing an article in English is difficult. But when I finished it, it was truly worthwhile.
최 혜 연 (1기)
This is the first time that I wrote my own English article. It is very hard to choose the topic, search for the right information, organize the contents, and write them down objectively. This club activity has given me a chance to enhance my English skills and make new friends.
김 예 은 (1기)
Actually, I've never written such a long article, so I was very nervous at first. However, when my first article was finished, I was proud of myself. Next time, I'll put in more effort.

When I first signed up for Yonghwa Inside I hoped to participate in this club and write good articles, but it is hard to write a fascinating article with perfect grammar and structure. Even though I didn't write a perfect article, I love writing and I want to do well next year.
양 종 수 (2기)
It was tiring, but also a very delightful experience. If I can have a chance to take part in Yonghwa Inside again, I will participate more actively.
최 서 윤 (2기)
Writing an article was harder than I thought. Many times I felt frustrated. If I have another opportunity I will do better next time.
이 시 연 (2기)
Yonghwa Inside is the very first English newspaper I've made. It is so fascinating to see my article published on paper. I wish I could do a better job if I get another chance.
김 보 경 (2기)

I wanted to take part in a meaningful activity during high school and I found Yonghwa Inside. It was sometimes too difficult to write articles, so I sometimes regreted joining this club. But I'm full of anticipation now. I think it was very helpful, so if I get another chance, I want to join again.
이 아 란 (2기)
At first, it was not easy at all writing my own article. Sometimes it made me really bored too. But now I'm really proud of our 2009 newspaper, Yonghwa Inside, although it may not be perfect. I think it was a good choice to join this club.
지 혜 은 (2기)
I hope you take a close look at every article in this newspaper. I felt this activity was meaningful, because we wrote hard. Thanks ^^
정 지 은 (2기)
I am really happy to be a writer of Yonghwa Inside. Although it was quite hard to write articles myself. I hope I will have another chance to write articles next year!

I wanted to write articles on interviews, because I wanted to interview my favorite teacher. It was a valuable experience for me. And I feel thankful for this.
최 지 혜 (2기)
This was the first time that I have written an article, so it was very difficult to make this. Although it might have many errors, I did my best. Thank you~~
