"Starting morning time with meditation is a
Q. What’s your opinion about Yonghwa students?
Q. Why do Yonghwa students do meditation every morning?
They are very good. Especially, I highly praise their sincerity and behavior to follow the school rules. Not only I, but many other people compliment Yonghwa students.
Starting morning time with meditation is a great chance for students who are only struggling for university entrance exam. It helps you to start your day smoothly. In addition to that, habituating reading books is equally important. When 30 minutes of reading every morning gathers one by one, it will have an enormous quantity. It may also lead you to increasing your Korean language grade.
Q. When you give Kimchi to students, what’s in your mind? In my opinion, Kimchi is the best food. Thus, I hope many students have a healthy body by eating Kimchi.
Q. What is the point of bilingual class?
for students
To be ahead of the times, students should have the opportunity to experience specialized education that strives for the global stage. Bilingual class is to fulfill the certain requirements the society expects from today’s students. Most importantly, it is to influence and improve our students’ adaptability.
who are only struggling for university entrance exam. "
Q. What do you think about international exchange between Korea and Singapore? It has the same aim with bilingual classes. The world is gathering more and more closer together. Globalization is here. Many universities have English speaking classes. By using English, we can be a global person. That is why I think international exchange between Korea and Singapore is important.
Actually, it is difficult to explain. But Korea's education is definitely going the wrong way now. Private tuition fee is too high and competition is so intense that there are no true friends. Many times friends are seen as competitors. Therefore, we need to strive to make humanism mind.
Q. Tell us something you hope for Yonghwa. There is an old proverb that says "Hardship in youth is worth experiencing." Students' duty and role is to study hard. Even Ann Cheol Su, who gained a big fame, highlighted studying hard in youth. If you want to be a professional in one field, you have to have strong basic knowledge.
We had a long and profitable conversation with kind and adorable Vice-principal, Kim Jong Chan. Hope Yonghwa students read and understand his thought too.

Interview
How did you feel when you voted and while waiting for the result?
INTERVIEWS
4
Q. How do you feel about giving an interview in English? Even a normal interview in Korean is unfamiliar to me. But in English? English is difficult, however, it is what I like and have interest in. And I believe you will translate my speech well. So I am interested in the interview.
Q. Why did you want to be the student president? When I was in the first grade, the school festival was ruined because of rain. And I thought the student council's investment was not enough. I thought if I were the student president, I would have done better. Also I have experience as student president in middle school, and I heard the student councils of middle school and high school are quite different. That made me want to become the student president even more.
Q. I saw a picture of you putting a ballot in the ballot box at the school homepage.
Well, I voted for myself but I lost confidence and at the time other candidates looked better than me and more fit as student president. However, my friends smiled at me, encouraged me and trusted me. I think they uplifted me. By the way, when I put the ballot in the ballot box, I was photographed. It was very embarrassing because I'm not a photogenic.
Q. I remember you promised three pledges. Have you carried out the pledges? Yes, there were three pledges regarding collecting suggestions, lending slippers, and holding certain events. First of all, about collecting suggestions, I can assure there will be a change if I receive any suggestion. Actually, there's not enough time at the meeting of delegates. So I think it will be better if students deliver their opinions directly to the student council or just come to my classroom( classroom 10 of grade 2) and tell me their suggestions. And the lending slippers pledge was talked about a lot. There is a budget for election pledges in the school budget. I can use it at the end of the year, so I'm planning to carry it out then. Lastly I can't tell you about the events planned by the student council. However, we are planning more events after the university entrance exams.
Q. Are there any episodes
before and after you became a student president? I think there are three episodes. First, it is an episode before I became a student president. I prepared vegetable masks for the campaign. It meant freshness like fresh vegetables. However, I couldn't use it because candidates are not allowed to campaign in the school. It was very shocking, and it's a shame to get rid of them. So I used them on the UCC. Next is the episode after becoming the student president. When I got the appointment certificate at the school broadcasting studio, I and the student vice presidents planned to hold up the V sign. I carried out our plan first but after I did that, the reaction was not good, so the others didn't do that. I was so ashamed of myself and regretted what I had done. Last episode also took place after becoming the student president. It was the school festival day. I was walking around the school and then I saw a wrong scene. Boys were smoking at the back of the school. I went in front of them and confiscated their cigarette, and made them go out of our school.
Q. Is there anything that you want to add? I think the student president seems to be something great but has no power to change the school. However, during my term, I want to do anything that I can for the school and the students. In short, I hope many people remember me as a good student president of Yonghwa Girls' High School.

Q&A with a senior, Jeong Jieun,
the former president of N.O.T.E We interviewed Jeong Jieun, a senior at Yonghwa Girls' High School, on July 14, 2011 in order to answer some questions that first and second graders may have for third grade students. Let's go to the interview! EDIT_ Jun Min Kyoung
Interview
Q. What is your dream and what do you want to major in the university? My dream is to become a diplomat because I have dreamt of it ever since I was little. I want to take a course in 'Politics and Diplomacy' but I am not certain of the major.
Q. What is the thing you most want to do if you go to university? I want to participate in many club activities in the university. And I want to join an energetic club. Hmm... for example, 'gun shooting' club.
The course that I have taken stresses me because it is difficult to choose a university that I want to go to.
Q. Do you think Lessons After School, Gyphyeon Academy, and self-regulated studying at night in Yonghwa Girls' High School are helpful? I personally think they are helpful. I didn't take a lot of lessons, but my friends told me that their grades increased after taking lessons at Gyp-hyeon Academy. Also the place of studying doesn't matter at all because study depends on one's will. But selfregulated studying at night is better because I am surrounded by friends who are in the same circumstance and this helps me study.
Q. In the third grade, do all students study? How is the atmosphere compared with that of first or second graders? Not all third graders study. As expected, anyone willing to study does study, but those unwilling do not. But intensity of studying is more serious and desperate than that of first or second graders. For example, few students in their first or second years study during break time but most third graders study very hard in break time.
Q. You will be taking the university entrance
Someone told me that there is not enough time to study for the university entrance exam, but in fact there is enough time to study. That's because time is relative according to one's effort.
Q. What is your most regretful and best conduct during your school years? I mostly regret that I didn't read many books and did not participate in many club activities. And my best conduct is that I did much volunteer work in my first and second years. For example, GLS, volunteering wok in Mongolia, club activities and so on. Thanks to these activities I have many things to write when I write a letter of self-introduction. Also, I think it was a good thing that I studied in middle school when other guys didn't.
Q. Do you want to advance to the university or go back to childhood again? Of course, I want to go to childhood again. Middle school student life is pretty good. I actually had the fantasy of university life until I was a first grader, but it was broken when I become a third grader. If I become an undergraduate student, I would get freedom, but there are responsibility that follow and it costs so much. There are many undergraduates who live a tired life around me.
Q. Who is your favorite teacher in Yonghwa Girls' High School? Lee Shinae teacher, Jun Yeongpil teacher, and Lee Sunim teacher.^^
Q. Any final remarks to your juniors? Well, this could sound banal but I'd like to say study hard in the first and second grade particularly math. Also you should choose selective courses as fast as possible to study in advance. Some students study only the three main subjects(Korean, English, Math) and says that selective courses can be finished quickly. But it was much too though for me. I personally recommend you to study geography and Korean Modern & Contemporary History ahead. It would be like catching two birds with one stone because they are essential subjects in our school as well as the university entrance exam.

Five Yonghwa Girls become Little Curators EDIT_ Kim Yun Jin
How
nice it would be if you could work in the field that you have interest in!
However, you don't have to wait until you graduate from university to gain such an experience. You can do it as a high school student. It is possible by 'Youth internship program'.
Who's reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
6
Internship means acquiring one's career to get a job. However, youth internship is a little different. It was planned to give youth a chance to be experience specific fields and receive education on occupational ethics through practice. These days many institutes introduce this system to high school and middle school students. For example, you can watch operating process in a hospital and enter dealing room in a bank. Even though you are not employed formally, it will be awfully exciting. And it is used in the new entrance examination and entrance assessment system, too. Five of our school students participated in the Seoul History Museum's youth internship program. They are 박시현(2-1), 성 유리(2-1), 서희원(2-2), 김윤진(2-3) and 오별(2-6). The students have been working at the museum on every 2nd and 4th Saturday since April, 9th of 2011. Let me introduce the museum internship activities. It is a kind of education for museum curators of the future. First, they receive education about the history of Seoul for 12 hours. The intern does not just listening to a given lecture but learns with the heart and body by seeing remains, visiting in-service, making souvenir and debating topics after the lecture. That is to say, it is a preliminary exercise for future curators to learn how to explain
to visitors when asked a question. They can learn how to educate visitors about Seoul history through these activities. Then, participants also take part in docent activities. Docent stands for explaining museum's remains and history to visitors. Participants get a chance to learn from docent experts and they practice more professional work. They take one more step closer to becoming a curator by learning to write an excerpt of explanation and practicing the art of docentship. Finally, they do the most exciting experience as a curator. It is plaining an exhibition. All participants held their own small exhibition and this final activity allowed us to better understand the role of a curator. It is amazing that five Yonghwa Girls' High School students were selected for the program which consists of a total of 55 students from across the whole country. It is because of the school's daily notice. Many students have to spend lots of time and effort to search and apply for such an excellent program. However, our school students are easily able to gather good information from the school daily bulletin every morning. Have we answered some questions about third graders somewhat? Finally, we thank "Jeong Jieun", who gave valuable time for us in a busy time.

DHAP'PENINGS (DHAP + Happenings) For
4 days, from 31st of May to 3rd of June 2011, Dunman High ASEAN Plus Summit 2011(DHAP) was held at Dunman Highschool, Singapore. More than 200 students from 24 schools in 7 countries worldwide including Korea, China, India, Malaysia, etc. participated in this summit. Yonghwa Girls' High School team consisted of three 1st grade and three 2nd grade students and represented Malaysia. Although we had successfully passed interviews and group discussions, we practiced for this summit a lot. We had to write at least 5 individual reports and had to meet every lunch time to improve our English skills and learn DHAP's unique rules. For 2 days from 7:30AM to 6:30PM including intermissions, every participant took part in a council session to talk about problems taking place in real life especially in ASEAN countries. Because most students who participated use
English and Mandarin as their native language, it was really hard for us just to understand what their opinion was because of their strong accent. On the 3rd day, all the delegates participated in the Crisis Session and Press Exposition. Like the Council Session, after a heated debate and many suggested solutions, all the delegates voted and gave out one resolution paper. But unlike the Council Session, a team that represented one country worked together in the Crisis Session. An impromptu topic was given along with 10 minutes of preparation time. After the passing of time, unmoderated caucus took place and the session lasted for about three hours. In the final resolution paper our team, delegates of Malaysia, became the co-submitter!! We screamed with joy. Being the co-submitter nation is not an easy task at all. We had to keep running around and talking endlessly to persuade others to become Sponsor Countries for us.
A f t e r t h e c l o s i n g c e r e m o n y, International Day was held. Nearly all the participants wore their own traditional clothes(in our case, Hanbok) and had lots of fun by having supper together. Hanbok was really unique so wearing that helped us to make more Facebook friends. After experiencing the summit, we found out that we actually had changed in many ways. For instance, we usually see and think in the points of view of strong countries such as the USA, but because all the topics and countries in the summit were strictly related to the Asian region, we tried to think and come up with ideas in an Asian countries' point of view. DHAP Summit 2011 not only helped us b e more conf ident and a ler t to international issues or be much more fluent in English, but it also reminded us that we as Asians have to work together and be strong and united.

Yo n g h w a G i r l s ' H i g h School students had a study tour in Australia from July 15th to August 20th in 2011. A total of 5 students participated in the event. The school which they visited was named "Our Lady of the Sacred Heart" which set up a sisterhood relationship with our school. We already held video conferences since 2010. There are about 500 students in OLSH(Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and they also wear school uniforms like us. Each student was assigned to 9 classrooms at each grade level. Also each YH(Yonghwa) student received help from a sister OLSH student for the duration of a month. At first, they were worried about adapting to the school, but it turned out not to be a problem. All of OLSH students and teachers were interested in Korea and YH students. K-POP and K-DRAMA was the best connector between them. In addition, our school uniform was popular in OLSH and students were surprised at the quality of the jacket's fabric and everyone liked it. YH students met many friends of different races.
Each student was assigned to a host family according to their preference. Home-stay is the most important aspect of the study tour program because students spend more time at home than at school. Students could improve their English and they could experience daily life of Australia. They also have the chance to make another valuable family abroad. YH students experienced not only foreign school life, but also visited famous places in Adelaid once a week. They hugged real koala bears, saw real whales and visited Austalia culture museum with their new foreign friends. It was a good chance to get close to their new friends. Korean students who participated in the study tour commonly felt the need to experience and see the world more often. They even planned to visit Australia again when they reach 20-years of age. This program not only helped improve their English skills, but most importantly, they learned how to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings and the spirit of challenge.

GLS in Singapore!! 2011, from September 5th to September 10th, 16 students from Yonghwa Girls' High School went to Singapore to par ticipate in the GLS program. GLS program is a kind of school research program that requires students to think and research certain topics in another country. There were 4 different groups. The 1st group was 'Miru' and they researched multi-culture. The 2nd group was 'B.O.B' and they did a research on ecofriendly buildings. The 3rd group's name was 'Gaonnuribit', and performed a search on traffic policy of Singapore. The 4th and final group was 'Segyero' and they sought to study Korean businesses in Singapore. Before we progress with the results of the program, we have to learn about Singapore. Singapore is know for its tourism and it was abundant with data related to each group's topic such as a public library, technology university, Little India, Chinatown, LTA Galler y, Suntec City, Bugis Junction, MRT and etc. The well structured public transportation in Singapore was very helpful in performing the research for all students. The 4 groups did their best job in this country. The 1st group searched for traces of multi-culture. They went to Chinatown,
Little India, Nanyang Girl's High School, Bugis Junction, Malay Village and Orchard Road. They found lots of information there. One of the members said, "We can find new aspects of multi-culture. Before this program, I did not know the exact concept of multi-culture, and I didn't have a good understanding about foreigners living together. But after having participated in the program, I think multi-culture is a good thing. We found the need to interchange with foreigners." The 2nd g roup s e arche d for e cofriendly buildings. Singapore is famous for eco-friendly works, so they visited many places. They went to Nanyang Technology University, Nanyang Girl's High School, Suntec City, The Singapore National Library, Iluma, Mariana Barriage, Orchard Road and Mariana Sands Hotel. Singapore National Librar y is famous for it eco-friendly buildings. One member of this group said, "Before we visited Singapore, I was unaware of and uninterested in eco-friendly buildings. But after having visited the real eco-friendly buildings and seeing the good points about them, I think Korea should improve eco-technology like Singapore. I also found the reason behind why Singapore is famous for being a clean country."
The 4th group searched for Korean businesses in Singapore. They visited Bugis Junction, BHG, and Suntec City. They researched how many Korean businesses have entered the Singapore market. One member of this group said "In the news, we could find that Korean businesses were quite popular in Singapore. But we ddidn't know whether this was true. So we chose this topic. And from our visit to Singapore, we found there are many Korean businesses and that they are enjoying great popularity." T he s e are t he re su lt s of t he G L S program. Each group left Singapore with different thoughts after the program. But one common thought was shared between the members. "Korea has to develop in more ways and Korea has great potential to improve. And to develop our country, we have to learn more about the world and act with initiative rather than following the leading group. We have to be great leaders in the world." EDIT_ Park So Jeong

The 3rd group researched traffic policy of Singapore. They visited LTA Gallery, MOT, PIC and Suntec City. Singapore has a very developed traffic system. The MRT goes everywhere directly and there is no traffic jam. One of the members told me "We had heard Singapore is very famous for its good traffic system. After visiting Singapore, we found out that this is true and we discovered why it is famous for traffic. It have no traffic jam, and the subway is very well developed."

Who's reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??

This
summer, I was chosen as a representative to the youth ove rs e a s t h e m e c h a l l e nge r for Kore a Youth Development Project 2011. I had a great experience to know more about environmental issues, such as climate change including global warming in which I have always been interested. The experience in Vancouver, Canada gave me a good opportunity to learn about the importance of the environment once again.
Also in Canada, there is a famous park called 'Stanley Park', which shows the peaceful coexistence of buildings and nature. In Korea, we either try to create artificial nature in a park. But in Canada, they don't care about what the parks look like. In front of Stanley Park, there is a road that people can jog. Also there is a large river, so the ships can move around. There is a tall building matching with the environment in the outskirts of the park. Like this, they do not try to make an image.
The trash that you discarded unintentionally on the ground and the bottles that you threw into the sea when you were at the beach, where did they disappear to? Today, the world is in pain and chaos because of global warming. Nowadays, we have to take care of the environment and also protect it. So that's why the words like 'sustainable development' keep coming up.
While there are a lot of nations that take care of and try to protect the environment there are also a lot of nations that do not care about nature and only focus on the country's development. This attempt creates double CO2 emissions and speeds global warming. Where would all the CO2 go? If CO2 emission increases at a fast rate, the climate will also heat up fast because they trap more solar heat. Scientists say that in 50~70 years, arctic ice would disappear. This event would accelerate global warming even faster because global average temperatures would rise. And in recent years, we can hear the news that drowned polar bears are becoming common, because there is no ice for them to rest on. Then what we can do for the earth that is in crisis? We can buy hybrid cars, and we can practice recycling resources, and we can use more efficient electric appliances, and we can walk or ride the bicycle instead of taking the car. We can decrease CO2 emissions and slow down global warming only if we all participate in the movement.
Some nations really take care of the environment. For example, Canada is where 'Greenpeace' was first started. Greenpeace is a famous environmental NGO group dedicated to improving the environment. In Korea however, when trees are snapped or cut down by storms, floods, or landslides, people will cut down and get rid of them to clean up the mess. On the other hand, if the same situation happened in Canada, they wouldn't cut it down even if it resembled the remains of havoc. Do you know why? Cut down trees from natural disasters may prove to be habitats to wild animal or birds.

Yonghwa in Ireland EDIT_ Baek Ji suk
The
Seoul Global Leadership Training Program was organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Youth Cultural Exchange Center called 'Mi-Zy‘ also supported the program. Students participating in this program received training about their subject with prior research in Korea. Then, they were dispatched to countries around the world from NGOs, to international organizations and governments. Kim-nayeon, a 1st grader in our school, participated in this program this year and she went to Ireland to research worldwide climate changes and alternative energy development. The purpose of this program is to provide students with the vision of the future as a global leader and raise attitude as a diplomatic mission. Before they departed for Ireland, they held meetings once a week to prepare and combine knowledge about world climate change and alternative energy. In Ireland, they visited the agency of environment like the EPA which is environmental agency of Ireland. Anyone could upload data about the environment on the internet. This shows that a lot of people are interested in the environment. Furthermore they delivered the awareness survey of Koreans at the agency. The interesting thing is that most Ireland people were aware of the fact that Korea is a divided country, but when they asked what first came to mind about Korea to Japanese, they answered SNSD! Also many of Ireland people use Samsung's electronic devices like the Galaxy S cell phone.
As you see, we should pay attention to climate change and alternative energy. And also we should also strive to publicize South Korea to the world so that more Irish people think of Korea more than just a divided country. Therefore, we should participate more in international exchange programs.
Who's reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
Kim-nayeon took this chance to increase the awareness and knowledge of Korea to people worldwide and she wished that the air in Korea could be as fresh as that in Ireland even in the cities.

Video Conference at Yonghwa EDIT_ Tak Eun Seo
Have
you ever communicated with people using video technology? Nowadays, people can talk face to face with their friends and family who are located far from them. How is this possible? These days, technology has developed so much, so we can use a "video conference machine". Using this high-tech video conference machine, people can talk with others across the world. Even though this high-tech video conference machine is expensive, in Yonghwa, there is a video conference machine. So by using this machine, two bilingual classes in Yonghwa held a video conference with peers at an Australian school on April. As everyone knows, there are not that many chances to speak with foreigners in Korea because we live a life in which we use Korean most of the time. However, two bilingual classes had a chance to use English! Before the video conference, each student prepared their own topic with our school's foreign teacher, Catie. She investigated enough data to teach us beforehand. Therefore, thanks to Catie, students learned about "women inequality" in Korea and Australia which was the debate topic. When the video conference started, the atmosphere was awkward. Students didn't know what to talk about but somebody tried to express her opinion, and they started to participate in that conference actively. Actually, in Korea, discrimination of women has become a rarity. But still some inequality exists for example, women cannot get promoted as quickly as men in certain companies. But, our Australian friends said that they did not experience any women discrimination at all. So, students were surprised at the difference between Korea and Australia. Below are some conversation between the students:
Who's reaching BEYOND YONGHWA??
12
Korean Students : Have you ever experienced women inequality? Australian Students : No, I think I never experienced women inequality. I think in Australia, we don't discriminate people because they are women. Actually, in the data, the rates of women inequality were so much higher in Korea than in Australia. The students were worried because of the data so we tried to explain the exact situation in Korea. Even though the Korean students did not speak fluent English, the Australian students were accommodating and showed understanding. There was a chance to interview a person who participated in the video conference named Hae Dam. Here is the conversation: Eun Seo : What do you think about video conference class? Hae Dan : I think it was very intersting because I could use English with foreigners. I think video conference class helps me upgrade my English skills. Eun Seo : Do you want to recommend this class to your friends? Hae Dam : Yes I really want to. We can listen to foreigners' opinion in this class. I think sharing opinion with students abroad is very fresh and interesting. Students really liked the video conference class because this class made them speak in English. Since we had the chance to communicate with foreigners, it is likely that we will be able to use English better than before if we get another chance next time. As everyone knows, "Practice makes perfect!".

Because
There are a total of 14 classes in the 1st grade so we were divided into five teams with different themes. Each team had different itineraries but on the last day, all the classes visited the same sites. Because each team's itineraries were different, some teams had a really good time while other teams were miserable and bored because the program was not fun at all. The idea of diving the students into teams was great since
Most students said that the most memorable moment of the trip was recreation time. Students who are good at dancing or singing from each class participated with lots of practice before going on the field trip. The class representatives gave fabulous performances so every students had a really good time. However, everyone agreed that the poor choice of activities in some classes was the most disappointing during the trip that lasted for three days. It is true that some classes had a good time while other classes didn't. But what really matters in a school field trip is that friends and classmates enjoy lots of fun together and make lots of lasting memories. Just talking and laughing together with friends till dawn without worries of school work was fun and exciting. I am quite certain that everyone had a wonderful time and made lots of memories at Jeju Island.

2nd graders go to Kkotdongnae to volunteer and 3rd graders don't go on a school field trip at all, 1st graders were really excited to go to Jeju Island. We had to be at school by 4:30AM so we ate breakfast inside the bus on the way to Gimpo Airport. Even though we had to come to school early, all the 1st graders were happy to wake up early.
there are about 530 students in total. it would not have been an easy task at all to control all the students. But the selection of the programs was another matter. The students who had poor program activities thought that the traveling agency should have asked us where we wanted to go. But most students were excited just at the fact that we would be enjoying some activities at Jeju Island which is well known for sightseeing.

you e ver s e en p e ople who live on the streets and subway station? If you've seen them, how did you feel? Did you just feel sad and sorry about their situation or did you want to help them? In reality, when most people see the poor, they just feel sympathy and they don't try to help them. However, in Flower Village, everybody shares the feeling of love, and tries to help the poor.
breakfast and played the role of a companion to share words with. In the facility, the habitants can move about and do what they want. Therefore, students didn't know what they should do at first. But, they tried to find their share of the work, and started to talk with people who live there. Here is a conversation:
In Flower Village, there are many heart-broken people because before they came to Flower Village, their lives were so tough. For example, some people didn't have a home and couldn't sleep under a roof. Also, others couldn't eat enough food because of poverty.
Students: We are all from Yonghwa Girls' High School which is located in Nowongu of Seoul. Do you have any friend in Flower Village?
So, second grade students in Yonghwa Girls' High School went to visit Flower Village to do volunteer work on October 10th, 2011. Before students went to Flower Village, some students had complained so much because it was their last school trip in their high school life. But, after the completion of the volunteer effort, most of the students were satisfied with their last school trip. There are many social welfare facilities at Flower Village for different needs such as "for the homeless", "for the disabled", "for t he chi ldren" and s o on. The volunteering students decided the village they would go visit. So, students went to different facilities to do volunteer work. Some of the students who visited "for the homeless" facility, helped prepare
Old man: Where did you guys come from?
Old man: Um.. my daughter lives in Seoul too. And of course, I have a friend here. And, sometimes I speak in English to him for fun. Actually, I think I'm not that bad in English haha. Students: Oh, did you sleep well last night? And,,, it seems that your life is very happy here. Do you feel that way? Old man: Wow so many questions. Yeah, I slept well last night. It was a dream of love last night. haha. And,, I think my life is happy here because I have my friend to talk with and I am healthy now. Other students who visited various facilities also did a lot of volunteer work such as cleaning the rest room, cooking and so on.
EDIT_ Tak Eun Seo
After the volunteer work, Yonghwa students participated in an activity called disability experience. They blindfolded their eyes and experienced walking the narrow hall without help. Some students felt scared because they couldn't even see the light. By doing this activity, students understood disabled people better and broke the prejudice that they had about handicapped people. Actually, the founders of Flower Village dreamt of "a world where no one is abandoned.", " a world where all people are respected and loved like we are loved by our Heavenly Father", and "a world in which we love one another as we love ourselves." However, nowadays many people are abandoned, are not respected, and do not love one another. Many people are hurt by their family, friends, and so on. Therefore, Flower Village tried to save the poor and solve the problem of our society. After students came back from Flower Village, they learned and experienced a lot of things. For example, the y realized how lucky their situations were. Teenagers still have a bright future ahead of them, and they can make our society better. Hopefully Yonghwa students who experienced the life of the poor and handicapped and brought with them a thankful mind should do their best to heal the world and make it a better place.

Period of Personality (Yonghwa Festival)
EDIT_ Lee Yu na
What
did you do on August 26th? In Yonghwa Girls' High School we had a festival. Many students started preparing food and games for the festival a month in advance. All the students eagerly looked forward to the festival! Let me introduce some distinguishing club activities. Y.E.S.(Yonghwa Economy Study) sold some clothes or accessories which was donated by teachers. Many students were interested in the club's goods. So YES earned more money than expected. To their credit, they did a campaign to help unfortunate neighbors with their earned money.
SHASTRA(Science club) dissected a cow's eye. They commented "This was a great experience for us to learn about the composition of the cow's eye." But some said it was a little bit gross. Anyway most of the students enjoyed the experiment very much.
Other clubs including NOTE enjoyed their activities, too. After the festival, when I interviewed some students, most of them said they had a good time. But some students said, "I felt disappointed because of the lack of boys!!" Even though there weren't many boys, we had a wonderful time during the festival. We shall not forget that day as long as we live. You are always welcome to visit our school's festival!!

PS(Photo club) took pictures of the students. They corrected the pictures taken via Photoshop in their computer for a cheap fee. This provided a chance for students to fix a moment of their highschool life in a picture. So many students participated to take pictures with their friends. Most of them was satisfied with their pictures.
SM(Dance club) performed a dance to the music 'Goodbye Baby Goodbye'. GNG(Band club) sang a song titled 'Golden lady'. The students' reaction was really good. Some of them would shout out the performer's name during the show.

I also can be a Nutritionist Day EDIT_ Lee Yu na
Do
you know what day May 31st is in Yonghwa Girls' High School? It is 'I also can be a Nutritionist Day'. Maybe you will ask me "What's that? I have never heard about such a day before." I will explain from now on. A week before the I also can be a Nutritionist Day, students write down some menu which they want to eat on paper. For example, hot dog, steak, chicken, hamburger and so on. However not all these menus are served on that day. Our school's nutritionist picks just one person's paper from a stack and the person who gets chosen receives a present which was a roll cake this year. Some said the present was too small. But most students did not participate just for the present. It was just like a game. If your menu is chosen, it would make you really happy. However even when you are not chosen, it still would not matter. Finally when the results came out many students wondered who's menu had been chosen. A third grade girl's menu was chosen and some students looked disappointed with the result. In fact, I did, too :) Anyway the menu was 'Soup, Spaghetti, Salad, Churros, Kkakdugi, and Sandwich'. Students were surprised at the menu especially because of 'Churros'. Some exclaimed "Oh my God! Churros? I only ate that in the theater. How could Churros be served at school?" What's happening WITHIN YONGHWA ??

After the meal, I interviewed how the day's lunch was. Some students said Churros was worse than they expected. The taste was little different from the Churros they ate outside. But, fortunately Most of them said it was good. Whether the meal tasted good or not, we had a really fun time since we got to choose the menu for the day. The students were happy just at the thought of the food we wanted to eat. All the students enjoyed this day and we called it 'The small happiness which we can find in daily life'.

his book explains the world of microorganism in an easy and interesting way. It has a lot of interesting facts and behind stories of microorganisms. Also, this book explains various topics related to them. I recommended this book because I think it can help students get interested in microorganism and biology. This book will also prove to be very helpful in preparing for the essay test in the university entrance exams or interviews because this book has a lot of useful information.
T
his book explains everything from the simplest molecules in the world to the various applications of chemistry. I think chemistry is a subject which is studying 'the world of substance' and learning it starts from understanding atoms and molecules. I think this book can help Yonghwa girls to learn the world of molecules and guide their footsteps to the great kingdom of chemistry.

My Opinion
The author believes the universe was born due to the physical laws and proves the origin of universe in scientific ways. He claims that the universe is not a single entity, and numberless universes were born from 'nothing' by quantum theory. Some universes expand and make galaxies and stars, and at least one universe made beings like us.
I think this book is designed very well. The book has colorful images and friendly explanations which makes the reader feel comfortable. Also, this book has a lot of examples and interesting facts from our real life, which makes the subject easier to understand.
When we read this book, we can find that this book is related to the subject 'Chemistry 1', which science class students learn. I liked this book because it was very helpful at arranging the facts that I had learned in the past.
Also, Steven Hawking ends the book saying that god does not exist, and the universe is not related to god. The world of universe can be understood in the territory of science. Therefore, this book stirred up controversy between science and religion. I think that Woon Bong teacher recommended this book because he agrees with Steven Hawking. In my opinion, we should respect religion because it is needed for peace of human mind. However, religion and science is different, and it should not be discussed in a relative manner.
Moreover, it disproves the prejudice about microorganisms that they are only harmful. This book tries to show various aspects of the interesting creatures - both the good and bad aspects. It teaches us microorganisms are valuable and inevitable creatures in our life. However, it also shows they can be very scary and dangerous. In my opinion, this book is very informative for high school students because it includes the newest social issues and discoveries about microorganisms.
This book introduces various fields and enables us to scan a wide territory of chemistry. Also, we can get a hold of the concept that all parts of science - physics, chemistry, earth science, biology, and so onare all related to each other. I do not think that this book has something 'special', but it explains the main points of the most basic part of chemistry very well. Personally, I liked the last chapter, which is about molecular biology the most because I am interested in that field.

his book deals with the topic of the origin and life of universe. In my opinion, students who learn science should be logical. They should not utilize mythical elements which are unsolved and yet to be understood in solving science problems. That's why I recommend this book. This book tells what science course students should ultimately try to understand and solve. Also, it makes students ask themselves "Why?", "What should we learn more?".

‘Water SAT’ VS ‘Fire SAT’ - The secret of the level of difficulty. EDIT_ Kim Yeon Soo
The
trial examination was enforced at 6/2 and the result was announced at 6/21. NICE (Korea Institute for curriculum and Evaluation) got criticism from the public. The test questions were too easy that the area of each subject’s perfect scorer passed over 1%. Like this, SAT always get criticisms concerning the level of difficulty. So the word water SAT and fire SAT came out. Water SAT is so easy that every student gets higher scores. In contrast, very hard test that makes many students frustrated is called fire SAT. How will the test be structured this year? NICE announced that they’ll set the questions to make each subject’s perfect scorer within 1%. Some say that it’s unfair to make the questions easy, but others say that it’s fine. How do students think about the SAT level? I had an interview and did a survey with 50 students in second-year of Yonghwa Girls’ High School.
What's happening WITHIN YONGHWA ??
18 This is the graph researched about the average percentage of Math, English, Korean subjects in trial test. This is the result of the survey about preference of what our students want for the test. Most of the students in high score chose fire SAT but the lower scorers chose water SAT. I also interviewed about their thoughts. The name will be unwritten because of their privacy. (Unwritten name, the average percentage of subjects in trial test) A (15%)>I’m almost middle in my class and I think that Water SAT is better. If the SAT gets easier I can go on a high university than I supposed to go. B (38%)> Our Korea’s studying policy is wrong. It only requires the result of the score. I think instead of solving the math question having a creative active is much better to extend second hand active. C (20%)> The low income bracket children are hard to survive at the competition. If the test gets easy, it will decrease the rate of public academy. D (4%)> If the test get easy it will lose college’s trust and they’ll make their own test hard in order to find the good student. This will make another form of academy and have a counter result about the policy about reducing the rate of public academy. E (9%)>If the test settles easy and everyone gets a good score, they will try to divide a student with the spec if the test scores are almost the same. It will make socialization because the rich get more opportunity to make more good specs..
2012 SAT is having a lot of talking about the level of the test’s policy. Although there are many different ideas about the test, I hope NICE makes the test’s level appropriate so that there are no victims but hope only the good intentions take effect.

'Survival: I'm a Singer', Is Promoting Competition System Right? Starting from the cable TV program 'Superstar K', so many survival programs have emerged and its popularity is very high. Although the programs are loved by many people, such competitive programs have become an issue these days and its effect is quite big. We will discuss this competition system below. EDIT_ Lee Hae-dam + Lee Hae Shim
Aspect 1 : Competition Itself
A: Yes, like you said, we can say that the purpose of the survival program is the rediscovery of the abilities of great singers. And it can be the main driving force of development between competitors. But nowadays, the programs have changed only to focus on surviving in a competitive environment. I think it is not always good for the singers but can be harsh to them. For instance, in the interview of singers, we can hear the singers say that they want to survive or don't want to be ranked last.
Aspect 2: Economic Effects F: This is one of the chances for every singer to introduce themselves on the screen. It makes unknown great singers escape from economic hardships. Simultaneously, singers can make better music. One of Yonghwa Girls' High School students, Park Da Hee(grade2) said, "By mixing folk songs with new modern style, the rearranged music creates a totally new feeling". Also, competition programs are one of
TV. She also formed a social consensus by listening to songs of old generations. Likewise, you can listen to various kinds of music such as 7080 songs(songs of 1970s and 1980s) performed by the singers in the competition system.
A: It can be right. Actually, songs sung by popular singers at survival programs are sweeping all the music charts. Also, the singers are gaining great popularity. But actually because of those aired singers and their songs, new songs by other singers are quite hard to get attention. It can contribute to the economic hardships of other singers. Also in survival programs like 'Survival : I'm a Singer', the singers sing folk songs that are rearranged. This can lower musicians' will to produce new songs. And regarding the audience ratings, as survival music programs are loved by many people these days, most of broadcasting companies are airing similar survival programs. It is true that these kinds of programs are interesting, however, the truth is that TV programs are becoming uniform. Whether the program is interesting or not, it can disappoint viewers who want to find joy by watching other kinds of programs.
A: In survival program, the singers are evaluated by the audience. Ultimately, they cannot enjoy the real music because when they watch that kind of program and listen to the songs, they will only try to rank and criticize songs and singers rather than listening to their songs. Furthermore, in interview with a Yonghwa student, Kim Se Yeon(grade 1), she said she thought the evaluation standard and attitude of the crowd when they evaluate are not proper. For example, in the program, singers who sing an unconventional or new type of song which they have never tried usually get good grades regardless of the quality of the performance.
Aspect 3 : Diverse Opinions of the Spectators F: At first, youngsters did not put much interest in real music and were just crazed over quick passing fad songs. However, after 'Survival: I am a Singer' was introduced, a hot potato in entertainment program, so many people have fallen in love with real music instead of just hook songs. For example, a Yonghwa student, Yun Hye Sun(grade2) felt happy in the frequent emergence of professional singers on
'Survival: I'm a Singer' has settled down comfortably as a famous program. Still, it produces huge effects from commercial and music industry. What is your opinion? Instead of just enjoying music produced by these programs, what about considering the aspects of these competition programs in society?
19 OPINIONS
F: I think survival program is the main source of development between competitors. In "Compete, Play, Win: Finding Your Best Competitive Self " by David Apostolico, there is a strategic type of person. To be specific, no matter how hard the problem is, competitive people find their way to achieve their goal, by utilizing rational inference and maintaining an objective attitude. However, failure is also a part of them, and it is natural. Additionally, competition helps evaluate yourself. This kind of people compete in order to achieve victory. However, they are equipped with fairness, play morally by the rules and sometimes they even give their counterpart some benefits.
the best ways to raise audience ratings. This competition makes singers and the audience get nervous and glued to the television. Singers make every effort to win the competition, and the audience is entertained from such a situation.

Equality or Competition, Which is Better? EDIT_ Lee Hae dam + Tak Eun Seo
‣ Equality
1. Competition itself makes the community only "stand" in a row. At first, people compliment on the advantages of competition as it induces effective production. However, as time goes by, people get obsessed only by their relative rank instead of the concept of virtual efficiency. Equality, on the other hand, makes people assist one another. Especially the modern society puts more emphasis on the eco-friendly(it may suggests the equal relationship between human and nature) rather than promoting excessive development and expansion in an attempt to grow into becoming a developed country such as the European states. In short it is a disproof that competition actually limits development in the long run while equality nurtures the members of the society to feel free to advance. All in all, it can be an obstacle to progress. 2. In a severly competitive environment, people cannot be relieved since we do not know when the downside will strike us. The only answer is to just keep running for the endless goal.
OPINIONS
20
So, one must work excessively to achieve their dream and those that lie on the bottom must struggle to climb to the top. Taking a break even for a moment is considered as a chance for others to defeat him. This kind of system can make neither the upper nor the lower ranked people happy. Many do not realize how serious it is nowadays, but this severity affects Korean youngsters. For example, a five-year-old boy often visits mental clinic along with his mother, and the main reason was stress from tough education curriculum at an English kindergarten. This harsh struggling to survive in competition is just one aspect of the real brutal world. Can you still acclaim 'competition'? 3. It justifies the inequality by judging one's failure as his or her own fault. For example, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting bigger and bigger. The competition supporters say it is one's own responsibility. However, one can easily conceptualize the fact that the starting line is too far apart among the different levels of the social hierarchy. People from the top class have a significantly higher chance of achieving than the lower class. Competition advocators don't know this basic principle and ignore the uncomfortable conditions. Accumulation of such inequality makes the society diseased.
‣ Competition
Korea is no longer a developing country. Actually, Korea is more of a developed country. What made Korea become a developed country in such a short time frame? One of the important elements that upgraded our society was "competition". People tried their best to triumph over others which raised our society to equal those of the developed nations. However, some people started to claim that equality is better than competition. They insist that equality can make a better
world. It can be argued that they do not fully understand the situation in North Korea. 1. People who think equality is better than competition do not understand equality perfectly. Actually, perfect equality cannot exist in our society. People who are rich try to exploit the poor. People who advocate equality think that people can help each other by being a part of equal Korea. However, equality does not mean one assisting another. It just means a state of sameness. Therefore, people should not distort the meaning of "equality". 2. Moreover, equality makes people lackadaisical. As you can see in North Korea, people do not need to develop their talent in their work because society that is equal will provide them with the same wages no matter what one's abilities add up to. Because people cannot be motivated by their work, their lives would be tedious too. Therefore as they start to feel boresome, the quality of their lives also would become very low. Actually, society should help people live with passion, but an equal society precludes people from living enthusiastically and leads people to live an idle life. The people who live in an equal society becomes "a man with a narrow view". 3. Competition gives benefits to many people by providing them with various choices. For example, to customers, they can choose the best goods by comparing with other goods. But if there is no competition, they could not compare with other goods, and they cannot buy something that they want more efficiently. People who advocate equal society claim that competition is cruel. However, they should recognize that competition creates profits and efficiency. It seems that they forget the many good points of competition. If they understand and think about the many advantages brought about by competition, they would never be able to oppose competition.

This
year, there was a new try in education by No-hyun Kwak, a new education superintendent. As you see, it was a performance assessment test. He that the new system to measure originality and thinking power of students. However, it didn't replace existing test system but added to it. Therefore, many students were suffered from the double torture of exam and performance assessment. The problem was that it was too ideal. The public opinion about the system was negative. Some people even called it as 'penance-assessment system' because it was too time-wasting and required hard working. Also, there were some side effects; some web sites that sell 'performance assessments' came out. And there were some criticisms that the purpose of system was distorted and the grade level is not separated well. Naturally, it disappeared. Now, evaluating the result of performance assessment at least
30% of the total grade is not mandatory. The public opinion about the changed system is not bad, either. Actually, the new performance system modeled the system of U. S. A. The original purpose was good, but it was not suitable for the present curriculum in Korea. It was a failed revolution but meaningful challenging. We researched student’s opinion about the new test. Almost seventy percents of students replaced it in Yonghwa girl’s high school .In this chart, you can see why students like or dislike new test. It might show you the way that good test has to go.

Nam Hyo Jung: Personally, I want to make students do a role play about social conflict. But I think I can't because the time is limited, the standard for grade is not very objective, and students will express a lot of dissatisfaction Kang Yong Hak: I want to make students to find some creative ways to apply what we learned to the real world. Also, I hope to guide students to prepare their own subject and write a treatise for a year. Of course, these need students' mind that they want to do it.
Park Eun Kyung: I'm teaching Korean. In Korean there are four types of Korean- writing, reading, listening, and speaking. But for the most part, performance assessments are done on writing area. economists say the world's economic situation is not good. In many countries including Korea, youth unemployment rate is increasing. Early retirement and senior unemployment is also a problem. Poor social climate due to long-term recession is another stress to the government. Economists say the world's economy showed a bad sign since 2000, and the global economy crisis in 2011 was a secondary effect of global financial crisis of 2008. The sub-prime mortgage crisis that took place in the US was the start of the global financial crisis in 2008. It happened because the real estate bubble finally burst and this came as a shock to the world. The global financial crisis of 2008 seemed to have been overcome, but it wasn't fully resolved. The global economy crisis in 2011 started from the US and Greece. Both of the countries were in dangerous situation due to the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008 and a high rate of national deficit. Tax cuts and increase in national defense expenditure due to the 'war on terror' during the Bush administration rapidly increased the US deficit. Also, the global financial crisis of 2008 induced large scale unemployment. It resulted in a decrease in tax income and increase in unemployment benefits provided by the government leaving an even greater impact on the deficit. Recently, Greece has overcome the crisis of national bankruptcy. The crisis of Greece was also due to the rise in national financial deficit. Greece and other European countries already had problems related to excessive welfare provided by the government. Moreover, the 2008 global financial crisis made a big impact on the tourist industry, which is the main industry of Greece. The crisis of USA and Greece is not just their own problem because this can be extended to other countries. USA is the center of global economy, so many other countries can also fall into chaos. The crisis of Greece is a very big problem because other Europe countries such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, and even England are also in severe national financial deficit.
The prospect of another global economic crisis is not good. It can cause other dire side effects. Scholars predict that if the global economic stagnation does not get better soon, the antipathy toward government and globalization which does not coexist with other cultures, and anger toward increasing unemployment rates and polarization of wealth will cause social anxiety and excessive nationalism. Their worries are coming true in the European countries. Progressive political parties held power in Europe for a while, but disappointment toward ready-made politicians who couldn't solve the economic problems caused changes in political power. The government power in Europe shifted to the conservative, in some nations to the point of ultra-rights. Political parties advocating anti-globalization, anti-USA, and equality in nationalism are getting support. The main example is the terror that recently took place in Norway, which showed anger toward increasing immigrants. Due to continuing recession and peoples' recognition which cannot keep up with the speed of globalization, antipathy toward immigrants is common in European countries. Excessive nationalism itself is a problem, but the bigger problem is that many scholars forecast it could spread to other countries outside Europe. Left-winged political parties are also getting attention. These political parties support not the existing politicians, but the new faces who have shown competence as civil activists. Politicians should remember that people want change, but the change should not result in excessive nationalism. Nationalism and ultra-right activists are symbols of the dark past, and we should be cautious of them. An open mind which pursues coexistence with other cultures and accepts various view points is essential to prevent the dark past from repeating itself.

Pros and Cons of an Intelligence and Information Society There is much ongoing debate on the pros and cons of an intelligence and information society. I will discuss the advantages and then the disadvantages in order. EDIT_ Tak Eun Seo + Lee Hae Dam
Advantages Students can enhance their quality of education by using education material in class using the computer. For example, some teachers use the 'Power Point' program to teach students and make them understand with ease by showing pictures or videos. Also you can chat with foreigners via video conferencing which will boost your English fluency. You can also surf the internet with your own hands using mobile technology. Samsung's Galaxy Tap and Apple's I-pad are examples of such gadgets. This versatile machine can help you search for answers whenever you want.
We also can take the lectures of famous teachers without having to go to the academy. The PMP(portable multimedia player) is a very useful tool when you don't have much time but need to study intensively.
Disadvantages Students can get addicted to computers. Actually, intelligence and information society is based on computers, so students can get access to one with ease whenever they want. However, students are too young to control themselves, and they are in danger of addiction. People may overlook this problem as a trivial matter, but it has become very serious nowadays in our society. Because, some students who are addicted to computers prefer playing computer games in their home to going to school, they refuse to make friends. Teenagers are our future, so teachers should educate students about how to use computers wisely. Student can also commit cyber crimes. In our society, there are many students who are unable to distinguish between right and wrong. Therefore, some students participate in bad acts just out of curiosity. In reality the rate of teenage cyber crimes is the highest among all generations. Students can get a distorted perspective of sex by watching pornography online. Students could not get hold of obscene materials in the past when computers were not so prevalent in our society. However today, as computers have become everyday tools, students can find pornography very easily. Some students even absorb all the contents in the video completely, and unfortunately end up behaving abnormally.

Historical Distortion,
is it Safe of Dangerous?
EDIT_ Kim Yeon Soo
Do
you enjoy watching historical dramas? In the past, historical drama viewers were only limited to the aged people but today it is popular among viewers of all ages. For example, 'The Man of the Princess' successfully came to an end with high audience ratings including teenagers. It became a hot issue because of the historical distortion applied to the fictional love story between two historical figures. Today a lot of historical dramas are being distorted in ways such as showing the main historical character's age as too young or too old or inserting fictional storylines to make the story more exciting. For example 'Queen Sunduck' distorted many historical facts. First, the age of the character Yosin, a soldier, was distorted to make him older than he actually was in real history. Second, they made a fake love story between the queen and Yosin. Third, the character named Misil was not a real character in history. But using certain historical distortion can sometimes make the story more exciting and awesome. Why is this historical distortion controversy getting bigger and bigger? There are pros and cons about historical distortion shown below.
OPINIONS
24
PROS
CONS
1. Usually viewers remember characters as actors. It gives viewers more interest in history and think more about our history.
1. If a student watches a distorted drama, they will learn wrong history and it can cause problems like the Chinese northern project.
2. By showing unknown historical characters, people find hidden historians and learn about them.
2. Moreover, as the Korean wave gets more and more attention, there exists the danger than foreigners might get wrong knowledge of Korean history.
3. Also, by depicting the original character in a different way, people can reevaluate the character from a different perspective.
We need to quickly find a solution, but before taking sides, we should reevaluate all the pros and cons. First, drama conductors should pay more attention to the historical fact than the element of entertainment. Of course dramas need the imagination of the scriptwriter to some point but too much distortion will harm the wellbeing of the viewers in whole. Second, viewers should practice discretion and realize that some of the scenes in dramas are distortions from history. They should be mindful that believing everything they see on television can have negative consequences. Many people are still trying to find the best solution to this debate. I think that more discussion on the matter is needed in the future.

The Lesson of
<Who Moved my Cheese>
EDIT_ Choi Yujin
Assume that you have to transfer to another school. If it is completely the will of another, you may be very afraid of going to a new school, because you have to leave beloved friends, teachers and the school which are very familiar to you. If you have to go now, then you have to adapt to a new environment but it is not as easy as it seems. So, this can be a big change to you. Then how would you behave in such a situation? Accept reality or deny the change and just settle in the past? Actually, attitude to adjustment is up to you but there is something which can help you cope with change. We can look to the book "Who Moved my Cheese" for some answers which has been selected as a must read book for first graders. Now, let's look deeper into the changed behavior of the four characters introduced in the book. Situation 1 - Before the change(when they found a cheese store)
to find new cheese. We have to behave quickly. Maybe we could find another big cheese storage earlier than we expected.
Sniff & Skury's point of view Cheese storage 'c' is a wonderful place! It is full of delicious cheese and we can taste many kinds of cheese that we want. We are too glad to find such a place. But, we know that the cheese is limited, so every morning we would check and confirm our food-stuffs for changes. We will not be lazy! Anyway, cheese is so yummy.
Hem's point of view My cheese has disappeared! I ate it even just last night. Where has my cheese gone anyway? Who did it? I am worried about this matter, but I feel sure that this storage will be piled up with cheese again tomorrow. I will not be wandering like Hur who left me to find a new cheese storage, but will continue to wait in cheese storage 'c'. I am not a foolish person like him. There would be someone who will bring back my cheese. I must wait.
Situation 2- After the change(when cheese is gone) Sniff & Skury's point of view We don't have to consider this matter seriously. What is left is just finding a new one. Wasting time worrying cannot be a proper way
Hur's point of view I couldn't do anything. Cheese was decreasing every day but I didn't care, because I thought it would be eternal. My friend Hem and I kept waiting because we thought cheese would reappear but it was denying reality. Now I realize, If I don't change, I could not survive. I have to stop unnecessary things (like just waiting until the cheese comes again) because it gives me nothing but it is just a waste of time. I told Hem my opinion but he didn't listen to me so I'm alone now, but on the contrary, I feel happy after throwing away fears of coping with change. I am now running to find new cheese.
'Cheese' in this book represents the things which we want to get or accomplish in our life such as freedom, health, career, friends and so on. What do you think happened to the mice who showed different attitudes? Two mice, Sniff and Skury would find the new cheese storage first. It is an expected result. They were already prepared for the 'change' even when there was enough cheese to eat. So, when the 'change' came suddenly, they were not shocked like Hem and Hur. They just accepted reality, and started the journey to find new cheese. But what about Hem and Hur? They were just enjoying the abundant cheese. So what was the result? When their cheese was gone, they just blamed other things. They didn't know that it resulted from their own actions. At first, Hur had the same thought as Hem but he finally realized, if he really wanted to have 'cheese', he would have to throw away his fears to cope with change. He realized that the person who prepares and deals well with change, only that person could survive and could have his own 'cheese'. He then started his journey. Especially for highschool students like us, what attitude should we show? The answer is that you should not remain in the same position but rather try to deal with changes ahead. For example, a transfer student new to her school faced with an unfamiliar environment may want to remain in the past, but this is just denying the change. If the student doesn't keep up with reality there would be some trouble in coping with new friends and adapting to the new school and that sort of attitude would give her nothing in return. So, in order to survive and get your own cheese, don't be bound by rotten cheese from the past. While you are just worrying about your situation, your friends are using that same time efficiently. Throw away your fears of change and face it to find your own goal or cheese. Like Sniff and Skury, when we steadily and sincerely prepare for change and the uncertain future, more opportunities to enter universities will open up. So, when we face small and big changes through our high school days, let's try to find new cheese rather than stay obsessed with cheese that has already disappeared.
25 CULTURE
Hem & Hur's point of view After wandering through a maze we could find the cheese store 'c'. It is the result of our efforts. Finally our efforts have reaped fruit! In the storage there is sufficient cheese and the cheese will always be here. Nowadays we don't have to run to the storage from home, because we know where cheese storage has been located so we can just walk slowly there. Our life in the cheese storage is very comfortable and happy.

Hatch Out from the Eggs Book Review of
<Cassandra’s Mirror> Have
you ever felt the need for change? There was a student who was ranked last in the classroom. And one day, she started to study, study and study. She changed and finally she entered a good university. This kind of story is very familiar to us and might bore you, but we usually dream about such a situation. Maybe a certain change is required in order to study for the university entrance exams.

The book which I am going to introduce to you is "Cassandra’s Mirror" written by Bernard Werber. Have you ever read a book written by Bernard Werber? Werber is already well known as a science fiction writer in Korea. In Korean universities his book is listed on the top of the most frequently borrowed books list. When we read his novel, usually we get used to his creative storyline. But sometimes his book gets criticism because the knowledge that he utilizes in the story is too abstract and hard for readers to understand. But Cassandra’s Mirror is a more concise and simple book. This book is a deviation from his 10 years of writing style. Instead of utilizing complicated scientific elements, he uses character who can look into the future to depict real world social problems. This is the reason his book feels new and different. As a result of this change, he has acquired a wider range of readers. In the past, his book was limited to class of enthusiasts because of the complex scientific knowledge that was required to understand his book. But now, a wider class of readers can enjoy his book as it deals with social problems. The interesting point about the storyline of this book is that it deals with the future. We all have wonders of the future and try to see the future. Do you think it is possible to see the future? If
EDIT_ Kim Yeon Soo
it is possible, could we change our future? The main character Cassandra can predict the future but can’t figure out her past. She ran away from her orphan laboratory school and suffered from autism. Nobody believed her predictions. The only people she could lean on were four homeless who were thrown away from the society or escaped society on their own. She succeeds at stopping an act of terrorism with the help of her four homeless friends. With the success of the adventure, they discover a bright future and they also find the meaning of life. The most important symbol in the book was ‘the clock’. This wasn’t just a normal clock that told time but it pointed out upcoming danger that would take place 1 second later. Cassandra showed conflict with the watch and her homeless friends from time to time in the book. It reflected our society’s darkness and forebode a depressing future. But the lesson of the book was not the fact that a terrible future is waiting for us but the importance of believing in the possibilities even if it may be meager. This book reflected the problems in our society and it helps us to think about what life truly means. Also through Cassandra’s desperate efforts to change the future, the author attempted to show that the slightest hope bearing only 1% possibility can still be a reason to live life with a hopeful future.

Remembering
Steve Jobs
EDIT_ Kim Han Byeol
As an American inventor and entrepreneur, he did so many things during his lifetime. He was a member of the board of directors in the Walt Disney Company, was a co-founder and previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios. Also he was a co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple. Jobs influenced many people all over the world by his incredible creations such as the I-phone, I-pad and many other products. He's not just an inventor but a teacher too. He once said, "You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever." He always told people to have faith and believe in yourself. That way you can have more confidence in yourself and even if things that you are doing now seem uncertain to you, in the end those things will lead you off the well-worn path. The biggest reason he didn't get discouraged after he was fired from Apple is that he had faith in himself.
'The 7 Success Principles' by Steve Jobs lets us know what kind of life he pursued and what we have to do in our lives. Lastly, for many teenagers who want to be like Steve Jobs, here are the 7 Principles: 1. Do what you love - People with passion can change the world for the better. It's very difficult to come up with new, creative, and novel ideas unless you are passionate. 2. Put a dent in the universe - Passion fuels the rocket, but vision directs the rocket to its ultimate destination. 3. Kick start your brain - Creativity is connecting things. 4. Sell dreams, not products - He builds products to help people achieve their dreams. 5. Say no to 1,000 things - I'm as proud of what we don't do as I am of what we do. In Apple's world, innovation means eliminating the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. 6. Create insanely great experiences - They always think that they are in the business of enriching lives. 7. Master the message - Steve Jobs is the world's greatest corporate storyteller, turning product launches into an art form. You can have the most innovative idea in the world, but if you can't get people excited about it, it doesn't matter.

CULTURE

the movie ‘Dogani’(a Korean word which means a melting pot) was released and put Kore an cit izens in a big shock. It dramatized a book with the same name which is about a sexual assault case that took place at a school for the deaf, named 'The School of Affection'. The movie itself was a shock but it made Korean citizens angry because the movie and the book was based on a true story of Inhwa School. In the movie, 'The School of Affection' which is in Mujin is introduced. Like its name, the school is known as a paradise for deaf children, but the school's education environment is terriblechild abuse and sexual assault is frequent. The headmaster, chief administrative teacher, and counselor teacher all appear as offenders. Three intellectual disabled students, a boy and two girls, are victims. The three teachers had been continually assaulting these children since they were elementary students, but it was kept a secret until a new teacher, Kang Inho, comes to the school. At the first day of school, he finds something strange about the students. He opens his mind to the children and soon, he finds out the sexual assault by the teachers. After finding out the truth, he tries to make public the sexual assault and dire school environment and demand a formal trial. When the trial started, a lot of citizens got angry because of the terrible school environment and filthy crime which is hard to believe that educators committed. However, the students were underprivileged people, and the offenders exercised their powers to their advantage. Therefore, the court ruling concluded with loose punishment. The real story is a little bit different from the book. The Inhwa school in Kwangju was changed into 'The School of Affection'
in Mujin. Also, the story of the book is more brief than the real story. There were 7 to 10 actual offenders, but the numbers were reduced to only 3 in the book. The Inhwa school case was closed in 2008. 5 people were prosecuted, but it ended up with sentencing 6 months imprisonment to the counselor teacher and 8 months imprisonment to chief administrative teacher. The school headmaster and a school teacher was sentenced a stay of execution, and one teacher was declared to be not guilty. The public opinion about judgement was not good, but people's interest about the case cooled down very fast. However, after the movie came out, it became a hot potato and public opinion insisted the case be retried. As a result, the judgement of sexual assault cases, especially those related to handicapped people, became more strict. After the movie showed a big impact, sexual assault criminals received longer terms, the range of abrogating an offense subject complaint got wider, the punishment of crimes related to children strengthened, and attaching location detecting electronic devices and posting of their identity on the internet was introduced. And of course, Inhwa school was closed. However, the most important change is a new law called 'Dogani law' passed by the National Assembly. It abolished the statute of limitations of sexual assault cases targeting handicapped people or children younger than 13 years of age. This law also enables penal servitude for life to be sentenced to the offenders. Recently, there was a lot of sexual assault cases and sexual molestation cases such as 'Nayoung case' and 'sexual molestation case at Korea University'. Therefore, many people started to show high concerns on crimes related to sex. As a result, sexual assault problems related to the handicapped got less attention. But the movie 'Dogani‘ was a big impact. A lot of people started to realize the importance of human rights of handicapped people, too. It's a good thing that people are showing concern about human rights of the handicapped and sexual assault cases. However, without changes in law and continuous interest, it would amount to nothing. Are you Good at English?
EDIT_ Lee Chan Hee
Are
you good at English? If you need or want to get English tips, I will give you some tips from Yoon Jeong-Ho, English teacher at the Educational Broadcasting System(EBS). He is a teacher on the internet, and is famous among students. Yonghwa Girls' High School and Daejin High School students visited him for an interview. When we first asked for an interview, he gave us a smile on his face. Here are some English tips that he told us
* The second tip is study ing sk i l l for listening comprehension(LC). The most important thing to upgrade your listening skills is 'shadow speaking'. The best way to study listening is "You can hear as you can speak." In addition, you don't have to distinguish RC and LC. * The third tip regards studying skills for TEPS. There is a correlation between TEPS and the university entrance exam. The good time to study for TEPS is when you get bored of studying for the university entrance exam. Solving a full set of TEPS and setting your own goal is a good way to study. Also, other ways are reading books and debating in English, which will improve your speaking and listening abilities. * The fourth advice is for studying vocabulary. To become a good speaker or writer, the most important thing
is vocabulary. To know lots of vocabulary, you must look up the word in a dictionary. Dictionary provides us with much information, and with that information we can imagine what is in our brain. There are many different types of dictionaries, but he recommends the <Contemporary English Dictionary> by Longman because it is written from the Asian knowledge and point of view. * The fifth tip is the encouraging words for people who do not like English and think that English is too difficult for them. First of all, they need to find why they dislike English and afterwards, they also need to find a way to have interest in English. There are many ways to have interest in English such as listening to American songs or watching movies more often. And next, even if you are a high scorer if your existing studying ways are not appropriate for you, you have to find your own way that fits you. Are you afraid of finding a new way? It is OK to create your own method. There is not much time left for the university entrance exam. Do not listen to what others say and wander but keep a firm stance and belief of your own way. Lastly, if English is a kind of art, English will be a crazy thing because, writers, artists and people who fall in love with their art are also all crazy.
Yoon Jung Ho teacher gave us many great comments but I am saddened at the fact that I cannot write down all of them. However, take notes of the advice he gave us above and put them to action and we will all start getting better grades. Let's try!
29 CULTURE
* The first advice is the studying skill for grammar. When you study grammar, you have to 'imagine a sample sentence' in your head. There are about 150 grammar rules, so you just have to remember 150 sample sentences including the grammatical changes. He recommended <The Good Grammar Book> published by OXFORD as a comprehensive grammar book. This book provides a comprehensive look into English grammar.

Interview with
Choi In Ho Teacher Do
EDIT_ Tak Eun Seo
you have any difficulties in studying Korean? Do you want to upgrade your Korean test scores? As everyone knows, "Korean" is a very important subject to be admitted into a good university, but is really hard to study. Therefore, many students worry about their Korean test scores. However, there is a way that you can upgrade your Korean skills. You should try listening to Choi In Ho teacher's lecture! He is a very famous teacher who teaches Korean at Megastudy, a well known on-line lecture site. Actually, you might have heard about him at least once because he is known as a competent teacher among students. As an expert in his field, he has always attempted to help students who have difficulty in raising their scores in Korean. So, he is a very popular teacher, too. Yonghwa Girls' High School students and Daejin High School students went to his academy to meet and interview him.
Interview Q: What is the most important thing when students study Korean?
CULTURE
30
A: Students should think of 3 things when they study all subjects, not just Korean. They should think, "I'm not a smart student", " I should read this book more than others", and "I should think more deeply than others". This mindset is very important because it motivates you a lot and will help prevent you from becoming arrogant. Q: What is the most efficient way to study Korean? A: If you mean the entrance exam, you should grasp "principle". Many students think principle is required only in math. However, that is a big mistake. If you guys have difficulty in understanding and finding principles in Korean, I would recommend my lectures for you. Also, if you mean the school exam like mid-term or final exam, the only way to study efficiently is to pay attention to lectures given by your school teachers. Q: What is your opinion about an easy entrance exam? A: Actually, I really don't like an easy test. In my opinion, easy exam is not fair. Students who study hard should get better scores to be compensated for their toil. Moreover, personally, I think students who do not study much should not enter a good university.
Q: Nowadays, the ability to write an essay is very important, so universities demand us to write well. How can we upgrade our writing skills? A: Reading books is the most important thing to upgrade your writing skills. However, many students do not read books when they are young and they don't have enough time to read books now. So, you should read many passages, solve many problems in Korean textbooks. It can also help you get better scores on the writing exam as well. Q: Thank you for your helpful answers. Do you have any words of encouragement for students who are preparing for the entrance exam? A: I think many students who have low scores in school really worry about the entrance exam. But, I really want to say to them, "do not worry, there are many ways to enter university." Also, if you really have low scores but want to upgrade your skills, I recommend my lectures. Be confident and do your best. Entering a good university is not everything in your life. Q: Please express "Korean" as a subject in one word. A: I think Korean is "Rice". We should study Korean everyday as we eat rice everyday. And, studying Korean is very fun and easy as we eat rice easily. Anyway, thank you for interviewing me and I hope my answers will be helpful to students.
During the interview, he kept emphasizing "principle" very much. He said that he always thinks everything will be good if he really cares about principle. In his own words, until entrance exam students should not think of anything other than principle. Although he is a very famous teacher, he was very polite and a good instructor. After the interview, he bought dinner for the students. He tried to encourage students to do their best, and it seemed that he really loves students. Why don't you try studying as the "expert" advises? Believe in yourself, and do your best for your bright future. GIRLS BE AMBITIOUS!
