Hello Mr. Principal! T

here was a new change and beginning in the second semester in Donghwa High School: The former principal, Mrs. Kang, Gyungsuk, who had worked for 40 years, retired on August 17th. She performed outstanding achievements while at our school. After her retirement, Mr. Lee, Seoung-goo, who was the vice principal of Donghwa, was inaugurated as the new principal of Donghwa. So, we met with and interviewed him about his vision and blueprint for Donghwa High School.

Q1. First, congratulations on your inauguration as the principal of Donghwa High School. Could you tell us about your feelings and determination as a new school principal at this moment? A1. Well, I am grateful for everything. It has been almost 30 years since I came to this school, and I have become the school principal. Now I am feeling a sort of burden, but I want to help nurture better education and educational conditions to the Donghwa students. Above all, to understand and to be understood is fundamental to better communication, so I have recently left the door of my office open. Q2. We are wondering whether you enjoy some sports or what is your favorite pastime. What do you usually do in your free time? A2. I usually cycle about 1000km a year. I cycled to Chungju Dam and it took two days to get there. But not this year. I'm quite busy, and recently I am busy in doing school work and church work. That’s why I can hardly cycle these days. Q3. As you know, the new building under construction is drawing great attention from all the Donghwa students. When is the construction of the new building going to be completed and which grade is going to use it? A3. If it’s possible it will be completed in the end of November. Well, I think the students don’t have to worry about which grade will use the new building because both the first year students and the second year students will use it once before graduation. But, I can tell the new building will be much more than you expect. Q4.What is your vision or blueprint of Donghwa High School for the future? A4. First of all, I want to say to all the Donghwa students that you have got to have self-esteem and pride as Donghwa students, and I believe you all fully deserve to have self-esteem and pride as Donghwa students. While you are in school, if you possess: Christian faith, academic ability, and good personality, then you will shine brightly in the middle of the world. That is the vision of Donghwa High School: The school of glorifying God and Nurturing students combined with those three key factors.

The First Foreign Language Speech Contest

D

onghwa High School has a variety of special events which are different from those of other schools. Above all things, the foreign language speech contest is pretty unique compared to other events in Donghwa! Of course, other schools also hold an English speaking contest, but they rarely hold foreign language contest. This year the unique and meaningful contest was held for the first time in Donghwa High School. How did the contest go? Let’s get in to the scene of the contest!

T

he foreign language speech contest was held in the lecture room right next to the school broadcasting room, in June, the first semester. Now, the second year students are learning the Japanese language or the Chinese language as their elective subject of foreign language. The participants showed their Chinese and Japanese language ability through the contest. Well, you might think the second year students have an advantage over the first and the third year students, so only the second year students would take part in the contest. However, the thing is that in addition to the second year students, the first and the third year students participated in the contest as well. Thirteen students took part in the contest, but interestingly enough, some of the participants taught themselves Chinese or Japanese. Wasn’t that great? All the participants presented various themes such as their dream, pastime, and interests in Chinese and Japanese.

T

he judges of the contest were the school Japanese teacher, the Chinese teacher, and the teachers in the International Department. All the judges said they were all impressed by the participants’ performance. In specific, Mrs. Jung, the Chinese teacher, who was in charge of the contest, said, “I was very surprised at the students' speaking proficiency, and I would like to highly appreciate their challenging spirit in foreign languages.” And Mr. Won, the Japanese teacher, said, “It was pretty difficult to judge the speech contest because all the participants did their best, and were good speakers. It was a tough decision anyway.”

T

he first foreign language speech contest was meaningful and worthwhile. In particular, we all know that the participants did not speak perfect Chinese or Japanese, but we should know that they did challenge the contest. Through the challenge, they could possibly get pride and confidence. Furthermore, they could get a great opportunity to make themselves move forward through the challenge. However, the two foreign language teachers said in common, “We hope more students participate in the contest and enjoy it, next year.” Do you have anything in your mind at this moment? What is it? “Challenge yourself!” What about challenging the contest, next time? Give it a try!

Faith & Vision Camp : Faith, Vision, and Fun

H

ave you ever heard that there is a Faith & Vision Camp in Donghwa High School? This camp has a long history, and has been taking place every summer. So far, many Donghwa students have attended this camp. It helps them build up their faith and dreams and develop close relationships with each other through various activities. All the more, it is especially said that the camp was significantly meaningful and also quite fun, for this year. Want to know more about it? Let’s take a look at it!

I

n Baegunsan Prayer Center, Hwacheon, Gang won-Do, Faith & Vision camp, organized by the Missionary work Department in Donghwa, was held from August 13th to August 14th. The first day of the camp began with opening worship. The participants enjoyed a variety of fun activities such as 'Speed games(saying by actions) and 'Throwing water-balloons'. After that, they were told a special sermon about heresy, a belief against official principles of Christianity, helping them watch out for the heresy around. Then, students made an end of the First day's schedule by completing an evening prayer session and camp fire. On the next day, the last day, they had quiet time for meditation in the morning, and shared their impressions from the camp with each other. Finally, after a closing worship, they completed the camp schedule.

A

s for the feedback of the camp, the students and teachers showed positive responses.

They said that they could develop good relationships with other students and teachers through various activities of fellowship. In addition, they said they could get an opportunity to go another step farther in their faith by thinking about the sermon, the heresy, and through prayer time and fellowship with other students and teachers. Finally, they could have their own time to keep their personal relationship with God and to meditate on God’s words far away from the world. However, it left something to be desired: the teachers of Missionary Work Department are concerned about the decreasing number of participants. So, they encouraged every Donghwa student to join the camp by saying, “Every student can join together, and have an unforgettable time with peer students and teachers and begin the personal relationship with God as well. Well, want to have an unforgettable and meaningful time, and build up your faith and dream in the school year? Then, come and join this wonderful camp! Youngjun Lee (1-6)

What’s Fun in Donghwa? Can you imagine school without fun? If you are a Donghwa High School student, you will definitely shake your head. You know why? That’s because there are pretty colorful, unique, and awesome events in Donghwa every year. Then what events have been held so far? Let’s catch up together. Before anything else, you have got to know there was a presidential election of the Donghwa Student Council, on March 23rd. Through the electoral process all the students could learn more mature attitude as a member of the main body of all the school activities. The president of the new council is Junsu Kim, the female vice president is Eujin Lee, and the male vice president is Dongmin Lim. The following is a major part of the interview with them: “Above all, we want to express thanks to the teachers and the students for helping us, and to all the Donghwa students supporting us. We know we put forward an election pledge to make multipurpose student ID cards, install students' opinion boxes, and expand students’ volunteer working chances. And we will surely put the pledge into action as much as we can!” Another great event was the school festival last August, and the heat of the festival was amazing. The theme of this year was ‘Donghwa In Fairy Tale(동화속의 동화).’ All the school clubs in Donghwa showed their passion and ability to the fullest, and even a famous ballad singer visited the school to celebrate the festival. Taken as a whole, it could not have been better, and the entire Donghwa family had a wonderful time via everyone’s participation and effort. When it comes to school events, the school sports festival can’t be missed. This year, all the first year and the second year classes competed in good spirit in various events. Specifically, unlike the previous years the interests and participation of the girl students were great enough to practice three weeks before the sports festival. In addition, the scene of the school playground packed with all the students who prepared for it showed how great all the Donghwa students’ interests was. The sports festival was good enough for each class to feel togetherness and to have a cooperative mind. This year, various student led events with fun surely came again. However, we should know that everyone’s collaboration, communication, and participation are required for the smooth operation of all the school events. And one more thing, don’t forget about the events of Donghwa when they are going on! Seohyun Kim (1-14)

The Wild Flower Virus The autumn colors are in full glory and the leaves of the trees in Donghwa High School have turned beautiful colors. The school campus is especially beautiful in autumn. However, unfortunately, we are surrounded by a concrete jungle and it's hard to find nature such as flowers, butterflies, and bees around us. Thus to prevent the spread of disappearance of flowers, Donghwa High School conducted a special project.

Wild Flower Virus? Do you know about the ‘Wild Flower Virus’? This special project called the ‘Wild Flower Virus’ means that wild flowers should become widespread like a virus. Plus, the project aimed to protect, and spread wild flowers around us. Donghwa students worked on the project under the guidance of Mr Park, a science teacher of Donghwa High School. When the project started in early June, the participants of the project prepared wild flower seeds and flowerpots. Next, they not just grew the seeds with constant supervision and care but observed and kept a record of its every process of growth on a daily basis. Moreover, the seedlings were transplanted in the school garden as well.

Beyond The School Only inside the school? No! The ‘Wild Flower Virus’ project did not end as a so-called inside school project. It started to expand to the local area in order to attract people's attention on the wild flowers. The first part of the campaign started on July 12th, 2014 by setting up the campaign booth in Jangjamott Park(장자못 공원). In the booth, the project instructors distributed badges to the project members, which mean the willingness of continuing and developing the ‘Wild Flower Virus’ project. Furthermore, they displayed the photos of wild flowers, distributed the flower seeds to people, and helped them plant the seeds in their homes. Lastly, in the second part, the project members began making UCC(user created content) and are working on various performances. The UCC(user created content) is going to be sent to the Wild Flower Culture Festival, which will be held in mid-October.

Through this campaign students got a great chance to look around and think about what is happening in the environment and nature around them. Above all, they indeed felt the need and the importance to protect nature and the environment. Consequently, thanks to the passionate students and teacher's consistent effort and interest on the project, ‘Wild Flower Virus’ could be successful and attract many people's attention. To protect the environment, how about becoming the next badge owner?

Incheon : The Fever, Hotter Than Ever I

cheon, South Korea - The hub city of Northeast - was the hottest city in Korea, just now. Do you know why? That's because the pleasant festival of 4.5 billion Asians, the 17th Incheon Asian Games was held from September 19th to October 4th in Incheon. Haven’t you wondered how it was? Let's get into the Incheon Asian Games, and feel and enjoy the enthusiasm of the competition!

T

he Asian Games is a quadrennial sporting event of Asian countries, and its purpose is to improve friendship of all Asians and to contribute to world peace. In Korea, the 10th Seoul Asian Games was held in 1986, the 14th Busan Asian Games was held in 2002, and this year in Incheon was the third Asian Games. The slogan of the Incheon Asian Games is 'Diversity Shines Here'. It represents the bright Asian future while pursuing world peace through friendship and harmony. The mascots of this Incheon Asian Games are Vichuon, Barame and Chumuro which are spotted seals living in Baeknyeong Island.

T

his Asian Games was the largest scale of all time among other Asian Games. This time, about 13,000 athletes and officials participated in the Games from 45 countries all over Asia. As for the South Korean squad, it consisted of 1,100 athletes, coaches, and other staff members, and took part in 439 events. Extraordinarily, 273 athletes and officials of the North Korean team participated in this Asian Games. Thus, all Asians could enjoy not a half-perfect Asian Games but a whole, perfect Asian Games.

T

his Asian Games was like a heart-moving story: Park Tae-hwan who did his best to the very end, the wonderful friendship between Park Tae-hwan and Sung Yang, Son Yeon-jae, the first gold medalist in South Korea's rhythmic gymnastics, and South Korea’s dramatic victory against North Korea in the gold medal match of men’s football. All of the Korean athletes did their best to the end, and presented touching moments to the Korean people cheering them.

A

s a result, the 17th Incheon Asian Games came to an end after a 15-day run, and the Korean team finished second in overall medal standings for the fifth time in a row. Through this Asian Games, the city, Incheon had a great chance to grow up one step farther to a global city. Also, it contributed to promoting Korea's cultural superiority to all over the world and to the harmony and unity of Asia.

TO THE WORLD BEYOND KOREA! What’s the first thing you come up with when you think of the ‘Korean Wave’? It reminds us of K-pop. These days, a lot of singers like Big Bang, Girls’ Generation and EXO are promoting K-pop. However, the music is not the only field of the ‘Korean Wave’. Many dramas and entertainment programs are being exported and playing important rolls ‘in the Korean Wave’. TV programs like ‘You Who Came From the Stars’ and ‘Dad! Where Are We Going?’ have been very popular in Korea. First one is a romantic fantasy drama and the second one is a real family entertainment program. What would it be like if Chinese actors played the roles of Do Minjun and Cheon Songi in ‘You Who Came From the Stars’ and a Japanese actor as Yoon Hu in the ‘Dad! Where Are We Going?’ In other words, it is called ‘Format Export’. It is a program development done by exporting a big frame of the broadcast concept abroad and filling in details of it. For example, there are Chinese versions of ‘2 Days & 1 Night’, ‘Dad! Where Are We Going?’, and ‘Running Man’. Recently, ‘I Am a Singer’, a famous singers’ contest program, which gained great popularity was produced as a Chinese program. In addition, the program proved its popularity by occupying the prime time of China and getting an average 2.3%, and sometimes up to 4.3% of the viewing audience. In China, it is a marvelous record. One of the important things is that these programs are not only made for exporting the format, but the Korean producers are also involved in the making process. In other words, the Korean producers advised them and directly participated in the production process. Therefore, the more Korean TV programs are exported to foreign markets, the more fame excellent Korean directors will get. This cultural phenomenon of exporting Korean program formats means the development of the ‘Korean Wave’. So, the more these cultural exchanges become active, the more the Korean Wave will make progress. Also, Korean producers will be considered as top level human resources. Now, it’s time to go forth into the whole world.

Welcome to the Colorful World! Summer has faded. A blue sky is infinitely deep and high, and dragonflies are moving hurriedly overhead. Autumn is coming! Trees are wearing colorful clothes: red, yellow, brown and so on. Yes, maples! The views of trees and roads are just like a painting. It's the best season to go on trips with friends and families. If you don't have any plans for it, why don't you join us? We are going to introduce some awesome places to visit just for you!

Jiuzhaigou Jiuzhaigou, literally meaning “Nine Village Valley”, is the home to nine Tibetan Villages in China. It is famous for its spectacular scenery with 114 large and small lakes, but among its wonderful views, the best one is the leaves of autumn! Autumn is Jiuzhaigou’s most brilliant, colorful season. The sky is bright and clear. The colorful leaves and tourists are reflected on the clear lakes and fallen leaves are floating on the surface of the water. You will be surprised by the masterpiece of the natural world. Temperature differences between day and night in fall are larger than in the summer. It is around 18 °C (64 °F) during the day and falls to below 8 °C (46 °F) at night. We recommend that you bring warm clothing like down jackets.

Tateyama Tateyama is famous for one of the most steep and beautiful mountain regions in Japan. The most famous place among the regions is the Japan Alps region that represents Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The best season to visit Tateyama is autumn. All of Tateyama, whose altitude is over 300m, turns to various colors including the peak and deep river which is located in the bottom of mountain. The height of the beautiful maple road scenery is the middle and last part of October. You can view the maple trees starting from Ropeway by taking a trolley bus or cable car in turn.

Maple road Canada is known for the world's best scale maple tree roads. Among them, we want to recommend a maple tree road in Quebec city in detail this time. Quebec is well known for beautiful maple trees scenery in Canada. The city has high daily temperature differences. Because of this, maple trees in Quebec have much more vivid colors than in other regions. The gorgeous maple tree scenery blending with European style structures makes people admire the view. Therefore, you can also experience French, English, and native cultures together in Quebec and it will make you have a more unique and valuable trip compared to other ones!

THE UTILIZATION OF FLUID IN SUMMER AND WINTER T

hese days, the video that shows a coke changing into a slushie is spreading through SNS. It is due to the supercooling phenomenon. We can drink many beverages fast and cool by using it. In fact, the liquid is cooled below its freezing point but remains in a liquid state. It becomes a solid due to the crystallization between molecules. Thus, a slushie can be made by this phenomenon because some causes --like pressure-- won’t allow the state of the liquid to change into a solid, although the temperature is lower than its freezing point. Then when the fluid gets external stimulus, it boosts a crystallization process.

M

eanwhile, one company in Korea invented a refrigerator which can make any beverage into a slushie by using the supercooling phenomenon. Actually, it was the first time making a product which uses this phenomenon. Moreover, the product is getting a good response. Also, we can make an experiment for this phenomenon easily. Although each freezing point is different, you just keep a fluid in a freezer without freezing it and then stimulate it! Finally you can get soft drink slushies at home, too.

warmer first dissolves the material, or melts it, it stores and then releases the heat as the fluid becomes hardened. It works by a supercooling and supersaturation phenomenon.

L

iterally, The supersaturation happens when more solute is dissolved by the solvent than it can normally be dissolved. The fluid in the supersaturation can be hard by only a little shock like the process of making a slushie. Thus a button in the hand warmer plays an important role for the shock. The fluid in a hand warmer usually uses Sodium Acetate or Sodium Thiosulfate because it prevents the fluid from changing despite the little shock.

N

ow, fall is happening. Why don’t you remember the principles this winter or next summer when you feel hot or cold? It may be a very useful scientific information for your life!

The Reason : Why You Became a Shopaholic?

Did you know that there are no windows or clocks on the wall at the shopping malls? This is one of the numerous marketing strategies to make you into a shopaholic. Here, today, we want to introduce some of them.

You have no chance after this golden opportunity! With this effect, Home-shopping has had a sudden rise. This marketing strategy is usually used by Home-shopping programs. However, it can be also used in various fields. This strategy emphasizes 'Amount of the rest', 'Limited edition', 'Urgent time' and so on. As you know Korea has a "Hurry up" atmosphere, and this way of thinking matches well with these strategies.

2,000 won for 4 pieces When you go to shopping malls, you can easily see some products tied in bundles, and they are supplied with a bargain price. The reason they do not inform that each product's price is reduced is they want to attract more customers to sell more products. Generally, the products consumed with low price and the necessities of life are applied in this strategy. It's to inform customers that other products in this mall are also cheap!

Fast food restaurant's morning meal for early birds As our society and people's life styles change suddenly, it becomes important to map out a strategy that considers variation in consumers' life pattern. You can easily notice there are lots of fast food restaurants selling a morning meal from 4:00 to 10:30 AM, cafes running until dawn, and convenience stores that never close up. These strategies are implemented because various consumer classes do their spending according to their new life style and one's values.

Fun & Fun advertisements Some advertisements are using interesting, unique and fun images or events. Their goal is to catch viewers' eyes and minds. This strategy makes consumers happy and promotes consumption. A rise of selling is turning a serious atmosphere in society into a light and joyful one. Also, this strategy can captivate not only their attention but make their purse open with a pleasant mind.
