he five-day school week was originally introduced to reduce students’ stress from an excessive amount of studying. Unfortunately, the plan backfired, putting students in a new dilemma. It led students to think, ‘ There is nothing much to do on Saturdays… Oh well, let’s just go out to play games, watch TV or hang out with friends. But….what if others study and I lag behind?” To tackle the dilemma, Donghwa High School provides ‘Saturday After-school Programs’. For a relatively small fee, students can select programs that can fulfill their needs.

certificate at the end of the event in their classroom. There was also a ‘Smile Contest’ that took place during the 18th Donghwa Festival. It was a competition where students and teachers chose the photo of the class with the most fabulous smiles. As expected, 1-12 won the prize for the competition As shown above, ATTI makes Donghwa High School a better, brighter place for everyone. How about joining the WEE Center right now? ATTI is always open to you all.

For students who are worried about falling behind, essay class, Chinese class (free) or math class are highly recommended. On the other hand, for anyone who wants to play sports on weekends but has a hard time gathering friends to make a team, there is a soccer or badminton class to choose from. For students who want to study but also want to take a rest at the same time, there are also programs called ‘Visiting Historical Sites’ and the ‘Science Experiment Class’. Anyone who wants to spend a quality weekend can come and join the programs. Please do not waste your precious time anymore. by Lee Young-Chan (2-7), Kim Tae-Woo (2-12)

onghwa High School has a counseling center called ‘WEE’. The word 'WEE' was coined by combining the word 'We' with 'Education' or 'Emotion'. ‘ATTI’, under the WEE project, is a kind of counseling club that plays a slightly different role from a regular school counseling center. ATTI holds several events for the students of Donghwa High School. Giving one of your classmates a good compliment was one of those events. It helped to establish a tighter bond between students. A number of students became more warm-hearted by participating in the event. The ‘Friends Award’ was given to the student from each class who received the most compliments from his or her friends in school during the event. Each homeroom teacher awarded the ‘Friends Award’

International Exchange Programs I

nternational communication is getting more important than ever in this Global Era. To broaden the vision of DongHwa High School students, DongHwa High School have international exchange programs annually with a few foreign schools. This year, we had three programs, one with New Covenant Academy (NCA) in Los Angeles, another with Sabah Tshung-Tsin Secondary School in Malaysia and also one with Kano High School in Japan

USA

New Covenant Academy (NCA) in Los Angeles

As a part of the program, a few students from Donghwa High School visited NCA in Los Angeles from the 16th of July to the 6th of Aug. They participated in various activities in the USA for 20 days. On the first day in the USA, as soon as students arrived at LA, a short explanation about the schedule was given including basic rules they should follow in the US. After that, they looked around the NCA classrooms and were taken to the various houses that provided homestay services. The students started their weekdays with a 20-minute worship. In the mornings, they memorized some vocabularies and had a writing class in which they wrote journals about places that they visited the day before. In the afternoons, they visited famous buildings and places in and around Los Angeles, including UCLA, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Disneyland, and Universal Studios. They also went downtown three times to experience the new culture. They traveled by metro or bus and were sometimes given a ride in the NCA principal’s car. One of the students summarized his experience as follows, “Experiencing different cultures makes me think a lot. I learned that we need a lot of effort to understand people who have grown up in different cultures, even if we use the same language.” Donghwa High School has a wide variety of programs for students who get a chance to meet people from the other part of the world. Attending an international exchange program during the summer vacation is one of the highly recommended programs, if you are one of them. You can seize the opportunity to study, travel and build up relationships with people in the USA. by Ahn Eun-sun (1-12)

Malaysia

Sabah Tshung-Tsin Secondary School in Malaysia

Donghwa High School (DHHS) visited Sabah Tshung-Tsin Secondary School in Malaysia from July 29th to August 6th. DHHS’s students were excited when they arrived at Kota Kinabalu airport on July 29th. They had a great time and visited lots of exotic places in Malaysia. First, they visited Tshung-Tsin Secondary School. The students introduced their traditions and culture. All the students and teachers of the school were hospitable to us. Students from DHHS also visited Sabah University, which has the ninth beautiful campus in the world. We were given another opportunity to learn more about Malaysia. At the folk village, we were shown how natives live in the jungle – how they make a fire and brew alcohol. They also visited the Tip of Borneo, where they could see the ocean at one viewpoint. The wind blew too hard to take pictures. Then, they went to the KLIAS wetland where the proboscis monkey with its long nose, and shining fireflies live. They had an awesome chance to see the unique nature for themselves. The most impressive tourist attraction that they had been to was Kelly Bay. The sea was emerald-colored and there were exotic palm trees. The students could go rafting and surfing and stayed one night in Kelly Bay in tents which they set up.

04

Homestay was an essential part of the exchange program. Each student was assigned randomly to different homes. They felt awkward to meet their new friend at first, but they became close after spending a few days of sleeping over and touring around the city together. On the last day at the airport, they even shed tears when it was time to say goodbye. Each student might have a different experience, but one thing they all had in common was that they got to cross the cultural barrier and became true friends.

Kano High School in Japan

Donghwa High School regularly carries out its international exchange program with Kano High School. From July 25th to 27th this year, students from Kano High School visited many tourist attractions in Korea. On the first evening of the trip, the foreign students arrived at Incheon airport and toured the National Museum of Korea. Then students from the two high schools gathered in Donghwa’s Joshua Hall and introduced themselves, followed by a welcoming performance by 'Hannuri' and 'Chumsarang'. The next day, everybody gathered at Semiwon in Yangpyeoung and enjoyed the fascinating scenery of a lotus flower park. Then, they walked around the streets of Insa-dong and ate Bulgogi for lunch. They also watched a performance called ‘Jump’, a famous performance involving martial arts, including Taekwondo. On the last day, the students went to a Lotte food court to eat Bibimbap. After looking around Gyeongbuk palace, their three days of touring came to an end. It was time to say goodbye. Despite the short visit, it served as an opportunity for the Donghwa High School students to introduce Korean culture to the Japanese students. In return, twelve Donghwa students are scheduled to visit Kano High School and learn about Japanese culture from Oct. 24th to 26th. I am truly looking forward to the trip. by Oh Yea-Ryeong (1-12)

A Trip to

Jeju Island

A

nnually, Donghwa High School’s first year students go on a trip to Jeju Island. It took place from September 18th to 20th this year and we made many unforgettable memories during the trip.

On the first day of the trip, we headed for the San-gumburi Crater. Its unique feature is that its crater is not on the top of the mountain but on a plain. The flame grass there was as tall as people and a variety of plants covered the plain. After that, we went for a horse ride. The horses were seemingly aggressive but later we them very meek. Horse riding was safe and exciting though they had an unpleasant smell. Our next destination was Seongsan Ilchulbong which is known for its beautiful sunrises. There was a large grass field that looks like an amphitheatre where many students played sports games and took pictures. On the second day, some students went to Ole Road, a beautiful, long road specially built to attract tourists from Namwonkeuneong to Namwon port, and the others went hiking up Mt. Halla. Although the long walk made us tired, we all were in awe of and fascinated by the beautiful scenery. Next, we went to Soesokkak where the river and the sea meet. The water was so clear that we could see fish at the bottom And Woedolgae was standing alone in the middle of the sea as if it was welcoming us. After touring along Ole Road we left for Jusangjeolli, a hexagon stone pillar. We looked at the pillar from above the cliff. It looked as if it was created by a mason. The last destination was Jungmun Beach. As soon as we arrived at the beach, we took off our shoes and jumped into the cold water unhesitatingly.

Some students woke up at 5:40 to go climb Mt. Halla. At this early hour, students ate breakfast and started heading towards Mt. Halla. We first arrived at Seuongpan-ak, the top of which is around 1200 meters above sea level and then climbed to Baekrokdam, the top of Mt. Halla. After packing lunches and warming up a little bit by stretching our bodies, our long journey began. After about 4 hours, we reached Jindallae shelter and had a tasty lunch with the teachers. Because of the high altitude, our rice was cold but the Jindallae shelter provided us with hot cup noodles. After hiking up for another two hours, Baekrokdam finally came into sight. Due to several hurricanes that hit Jeju Island this summer, Baekrokdam was filled with clean water. When we saw the beautiful scenery, it felt like all our pains and fatigue suddenly disappeared. Even though the trip to the top of the mountain was hard, I think it was a good chance for students to learn to be patient and endure. I wish more people would come to see Mt. Halla so that when they go home, they can tell their friends what a beautiful place the mountain is. In the evening, a talent show was held. It was an opportunity to show off our talents by dancing, singing and performing a role play on the stage. After a long, very tiring day, the show helped us to relieve our stress. On the last day, all the students went to a port, went aboard and looked around Jeju Folk Village, well-known for being a set for a drama called 'Dae Jang Geum'. It was the last destination. All the students visited the souvenir shop before leaving and flying back to Gimpo airport. We had a safe trip back home. When the trip was over, I felt a little sad but those unforgettable memories with friends on Jeju Island will stay with me for the rest of my life. by Kim Su-Kyeong (1-11), Park Eun-Song (1-8)

he third part, the highlight of the festival, started with a brass band playing 'The Phantom of the Opera', which was followed by many performances by a string band and dances by a dance club called 'Love Dance'. The MC, Oh Jeong-Tae, who is a famous comedian, let the events run smoothly throughout the evening. A number of students from other schools joined us and shared in the joyful events. We would like to thank all the Donghwa High School students for their efforts to make it a great experience for all. It was a once-a-lifetime experience that those who missed the festival would regret. In short, 'The Wing, The Youth' festival was awesome! by Lee Young-Chan (2-7) Park Hye-Min (1-11)

he festival began with a worship service in Joshua Hall attended by all the students and teachers. In the second part, students were free to enjoy a variety of performances, exhibitions and activities. On stage, there was a Biblical drama performed by the Missionary Club, a 'High School Musical' produced by P&E, the Music Club performed 'Greece', a Samul-nori, a traditional Korean musical performed with four instruments, Hannuri, a music concert by the Band Club, and the list goes on. There were also science experiments, photographs (DSLR) and art exhibitions, face paintings, and movies playing in classrooms. It was a great opportunity for students to break free from their rigorous study program and enjoy some well-deserved free time with peers and teachers.

n Sep. 5th, there was a bounce in our step when I walked to school because the school festival was about to start. 'The Wing, The Youth' was the title of the 18th Donghwa Festival, The theme means that students can show off their skills like a bird fluttering its wings. It also means that students who have dreams will live them out some day.

2012 Presidential Election

Who are you going to vote for?

The presidential election is scheduled for December nineteenth. The frontrunners are Park Geun Hye, Moon Jae In and Ahn Cheol Su. They all come from different backgrounds. Let's take a look at each candidate’s characteristics and pledges. by Kim Hyo-Jeong (2-7), Kim Ga-Eun (2-3)

Moon Jae In _ “ People First ” Moon Jae In is the representative candidate of the Democratic United Party (DUP) in this election. His devotion to realizing democracy is highly valued. And he is famous for having been a loyal supporter of former president No Mu Hyeon. Honesty and integrity are words that describe him well. But he has not shown his political ability in practice. He wants the society to grow through tolerance, development, ecological consciousness and cooperation. One of his pledges is to lower the unemployment rate and to increase the number of women in the workplace. He also aspires to build a diversified welfare system to take care of the vulnerable in society. He promises to achieve economy democratization. His main focus is the "construction of a healthy market economy". To attain his purpose, he wants to eradicate corruption and establish a transparent society. Moon Jae In's key words in the presidential election pledge are "public welfare", "peace" and "equality".

“A country where my dreams come true” _ Park

Geun Hye

Park Geun Hye of the Saenuri Party is considered to be the frontrunner for the presidency. So far, poll figures show that her chances of becoming president is the highest. One of her advantages is her political career of 15 years. She has been a major figure in Korean politics and, if she wins, will meet the expectations of many people who dream of "the first woman president in Korea". But her dependence on her aides is said to be excessive. Because of it, many people are suspicious of her political ability. She suggests economic democracy, supporting small businesses and emphasizes the responsibility of companies. And she recognizes the need for the establishment of a special welfare system for Korea. She gives her full support to childcare and education. She has also promised to eradicate corruption in the government, which will appeal to many citizens.

Ahn Cheol Su _ “ The change citizens want, is coming ” Ahn Cheol Su was a doctor and an influential CEO. He is currently a professor at Seoul National University. And recently, he declared his presidential bid. He is now a man in the public eye, not just a professor. One reason why he draws a lot of attention is his distinctive career. He has achieved so much and became a very influential man. But some point out his lack of political experience. Even though he has attained so much, he has not had the opportunity to show his political ability yet. And his strong character is thought to be both positive and negative. Recently, he published a book, "Ahn Cheol Su's Thoughts". Many people see the book as his first official action as a presidential candidate. In the book, he suggests solutions to a wide range of issues. He insists that non-regular workers should be given more protection. And he emphasizes the connection between jobs and welfare, hoping to advance both the economy and welfare. We looked into the candidates’ plans for the country. The choice is yours. Voters will soon have to cast their votes. Who will be the next president?

The Paralympics H

ave you ever heard of the 'Paralympics'? It is an international multi-sport event, involving athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities. The name derives from the Greek preposition ‘para’ (“beside” or “alongside”) and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. The first Paralympics was held in Rome in 1960 with 400 hundred people from 23 countries participating in the Games. Only 8 unofficial competitions were held at that time but its number gradually increased since then, reaching 21 Games in total so far. The number of participants also doubled to about 700 hundred athletes from 165 countries participating in this year's Paralympics. This year, the Paralympics was held in London from 29th of August to 9th of September. The Paralympics includes some of the same events as the regular Olympics such as swimming, table tennis, archery, cycling track and football. On top of that, two games called 'Boccia' and 'Goalball' are also included in the Paralympics. Athletes play Boccia on wheelchairs. The aim of the game is to throw a leather ball as closely as possible to a designated white target ball called ‘Jack’.

The Paralympics has a special medal called the 'Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award'. This prize is awarded to athletes who best exemplify the true human spirit by overcoming their adversities. The prize is awarded to one male and one female athlete.

The Paralympics is considered a big sports event in most countries. Yet, Koreans are indifferent to the Paralympics under a strong bias that the Paralympics is not a real sport. Such apathy makes it even worse for disabled athletes. Even a little bit of support from individuals will be helpful. We can do our bit to raise public awareness of the Paralympics by telling our family and friends about it. Let’s assure the athletes of our support so that they can do their best at the Paralympics. by Kim Ji-hyun (2-7), Lee So-Young (2-6)

2012 AUTUMN VOL.15

The mascot of the Paralympics is Mandeville. It originated from the ‘Stoke Mandeville’ Hospital, where the frontrunner to the Paralympics Games (a group of War Veterans with spinal cord injuries participated in a few events) first took place. The three prongs on Mandeville’s head represents three parts of the Paralympics emblem. Mandeville’s odd eye is actually a video camera and its bracelet is a computer measuring instrument. Lastly, its streamlined body symbolizes the need for endless effort regardless of physical handicap, which is also the Paralympics’ motto: ‘Spirit in Motion’.

Our Precious Island,

Dokdo R

ecently, the dispute over Dokdo between Korea and Japan has been heating up as the news came that President Lee Myung-bak unexpectedly visited Dokdo, an unusual event in history, provoking the Japanese people. To add insult to injury, a soccer player, Park Jong-woo did a ‘Dokdo ceremony’ after Korea’s victory over Japan at the London Olympics by holding up a banner saying ‘Dokdo is our territory’. The news about the two events spread throughout Korea and Japan via the Internet and it has become controversial in both countries. Sadly, most countries around the world have started to recognize Dokdo as a disputed area between Korean and Japan, instead of simply being Korean territory. Against this backdrop, it is important to know the truth about Dokdo to refute Japan’s outrageous claim to the island and to disprove its false information about Dokdo that the neighboring country uses to support its claim.

대한민국칙령 제41호

J

apan has raised groundless suggestions. For example, they insist that Dokdo has been recognized as its territory for a long time based upon the maps drawn by the fishing industry in the 18th century around Dokdo. However, according to an time-honored, venerable document ‘Samguksaki’, that recorded history from the 6th century under the rule of King Ji-jeung of Silla, Dokdo was first discovered by the Japanese only in the 17th century. Also, the old Japanese map turned out not to include Dokdo on it and was not even drawn by Japanese, refuting Japan’s argument. Secondly, in 1905, when Japan occupied Dokdo, on old maps of Japan and Korea, Dokdo was specifically indicated as Korean territory and in 1900 the Daehan Empire had Dokdo and Uleungdo assigned to their land. In addition, the Taejungkwan document clearly recognizes Dokdo as Korean territory. There is another reason why Japan’s argument is far-fetched. When Korea was robbed of its independence by Japan, Japan didn't send any notice or official inquiry to the Joseon government, which was compulsory at that time. Therefore, Japan’s claim to the island is invalid. Lastly, the final draft in the San Francisco Peace Treaty gives more proof. Dokdo was excluded from the Draft Treaty, recognizing Korea’s independence from Japan. Article 2 in the Peace Treaty with Japan says ‘Japan recognized the independence of Korea and renounced all right, title and claim back to Korea, including the islands of Quelpart, Port Hamilton, Dagelet, Dokdo and Parangdo.’ It means that these five islands mentioned in treaty now belong to Korea. Additionally, although Japan often uses the ‘Rusk Note’ to support its opinion saying that "regarding the island of Dokdo, this uninhabited rock was never been treated as part of Korea and is, since about 1905, under the jurisdiction of Japan. The island does not appear ever before to have been claimed by Korea.”, The note is obviously an invalid document as it is a confidential document. Even the Ambassador of U.S. in Korea doubts the authenticity of the document.

E

ven though it seems to the members of the international society that there’s still a dispute over Dokdo, the island is clearly under the jurisdiction of Korea. We should do much more to prevent the island from being stolen by Japan and prove to the world that Dokdo is our land so that the two countries can stop wasting their time and energy, and diplomatic relations between two can be restored. by Kim Ji-Yun (2-1), Kang Mi-Jeong (2-7), Lee Yong-Chan (2-7)

hat is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘robot’? These days many of us are quite familiar with robots. In the past, however, Atom, an animation character, was the only thing we could think of when we hear the word ‘robot’, though there were a few more animated robot characters like Robot Tae Kwon V and Ganga. As technology developed, the function of robots has also become complicated and sophisticated and many different types of robots have been built, such as housework robots to clean up the house, industrial robots, service robots, and medical robots. And human beings never stop developing new robots.

embers of NASA were reportedly emotional when Curiosity landed on Mars because they devoted themselves for a long time to settling in space. Undoubtedly, it wasn’t an easy task and bore a lot of risks. The historic event is called 'Seven Minutes of Fear'. NASA announced that it found evidence of life on Mars. Curiosity is scheduled to stay there and research more about evidence of life. It remains to be seen how remarkable the achievements of Curiosity will be in the future. .

ecently, the U.S. space agency 'NASA' sent a Humanoid Robot to space. There are many planetary exploration robots on Mars like 'Mariner 9' and 'Mars 5'. The first spacecraft on Mars, 'Viking', collected information of organic matter on the planet. 'Phobos 2' landed on Mars’s secondary planet, Phobos, with an exploration robot and sent pictures of the planet back to the Earth. The latest robot is called 'Curiosity'. It is aimed at proving evidence of life on Mars and is a lot different from a former robot 'Spirit & Opportunity'. Curiosity is 3 meters high and weighs 1 ton. It's the biggest and the most precise in the history of robots. It is much more advanced and made with cutting-edge technology. It has a laser and drill to break rocks, an analyzer, a super-function camera and communication interface modules to send data right away.
