: A Path of Future

W

hat is vision? Vision is your dream and it is essential for your future. To help students build up their vision, Donghwa High school held a vision school for two days from March 7th to 8th. On the first day, before students did various activities at their classrooms, they had a lecture at the Joshua Hall. An instructor told students they were going to learn about what vision is and the way to make it clear.

S

tudents also made a bucket list, which is a list containing 100 things that you want to do before you die, and shared it with other students. These activities made students think about their dreams and goals again. They learned, in addition, what ‘the magic sentence’ is, a concrete sentence to make your goal clearer, and how to write it. The instructor introduced a person who had succeeded through these kinds of activities. His name is ‘Scott Adams’. He wrote his magic sentence, ‘I will be a cartoonist who draws cartoons for newspapers everyday. Then he truly became a cartoonist. Achieving his dream, he changed the magic sentence to ‘I will be the world’s greatest cartoonist.’

A O

fter the lecture about vision, students went back to their classrooms and did the activities that they had just learned while contemplating their goals and future.

n the next day, students gave shape to their idea and wrote down their own future diary. At the end of the schedule, there was a vision declaration time. At first, students were very shy and hesitated to say their goals. However, as they motivated, they gradually became confident. After the vision camp, students were asked about the camp. One student said, “it was a great chance to create a clear vision”. Another student said, “I was glad to hear and share my friends’ visions”.

M

any students thought that the vision camp was useful to think about their vision and to learn how to make it clear. Now that you have your own vision, why don’t you try to make it happen? Yongha Park (1-4)

, o l l He NEW Teachers! We have a couple of new native teachers this year in Donghwa High school. Zane E. Bale is an English teacher from the Chicago area, and he previously worked at Donghwa middle school last year. Ya-Ning Zhang is a Chinese teacher from Hebei, China and it’s her first year in Korea. Don’t you want to know more about our new teachers? You’ve always wanted to go and talk to them but didn’t have the nerve to do it by yourself, right? That’s exactly why we are here for you guys. We got a chance to interview these two teachers and we are sure that this will be a great chance to get to know them better! Let’s hit the road!

What was your first impression of Korea?

Zane I agree with Ms.Jang. Korea is so dense with all the buildings and cars. Also, I felt so bad for the students who are required to stay through the whole day and night at school studying.

What is your hobby? Ya-Ning I usually go shopping, hiking, and I often play sports such as table tennis, and badminton. I love jogging too. Zane I like to watch boxing. When I was young, I watched boxing and wrestling, and I think that’s what got me in to it.

What is your favorite food? Ya-Ning I like yu xiang rou si. It’s a Chinese dish. It’s cooked pork with green peppers, ginger, black mushrooms and a bit of spicy oil. And for Korean food, I like Samgyetang, Galbitang and also chicken ribs. Zane My favorite food is Paella which is a Spanish dish. It has a rich flavor, and it is also good for your health. Then, Kimchi is my second favorite food.

Do you have anything to say to our students as a closing of this interview? Ya-Ning It’s my honor to be in this school. Students here are very positive and I wish we can be friends and you could also learn Chinese happily. Zane I’m very excited that I get to teach here at Donghwa High school. This school has a really good reputation, and my Korean friends are happy for me that I’m working here. I hope the students will be nice to me just like now throughout the year. Songeun Baek (1-12)

Ya-Ning First what surprised me the most were the buildings and apartments that were as thick as herrings. It was more than what I could imagine. On the other hand, I really enjoyed plants around; especially azaleas and forsythias. We don’t have any of those in China.

HAPPY EASTER! O

n April 1st, there were lots of students who sang and danced. Why did they do such things? That is because March 31st was Easter. Do you know what Easter is?

E

F

irst, Passion Week was held from March 25th to 29th. Passion Week is named because Jesus willingly carried the cross in order to be forgiven for peoples’ sins instead of themselves. Some christians try to understand how painful it was and respect him by doing something hard like fasting. So Donghwa High school arranged the prayers of people who wanted to pray for the pain of the cross. The prayers were proceeded in order of praise, sermon and pray. After the Passion Week, on April 1st, there was worship in Joshua Hall. Joy of the Lord performed worship dances, Pilgrim Mission Choir sang “Rejoice, Rejoice, ye people”, and the string instrument club performed “Even if a millenium pass twice”. The most overwhelming moments among the students was the choir song “Here comes the Love” sung by teachers. It was very exciting to see the teachers’ singing, which is hardly seen in our normal school days.

A

fter all the events were delivered, students received eggs that the student mission prepared. Some just enjoyed eating eggs, and smelling the bad aroma, while others participated in an Egg Decorating Contest. Which part were you in, the former or the latter? Decorated eggs were displayed in front of the teachers room in the first floor, and some students received gifts for the prize. As we have seen and heard, various kinds of events are prepared for students in Donghwa High school. Why don’t you take part in these various celebrations next year? Eunsun Ahn (2-7)

aster is the day people rejoice in the delight of Jesus Christ’s resurrection after he was crucified. Some of you may not be familiar to this day, but it is one of the biggest days for Christianity. In America, every school has a short vacation for Easter. Students spend time with their family attending church services to enjoy in the reincarnation of Jesus. If there are children in the family, parents prepare some treats to play hide-and-seek with them. Also, as you know, people usually decorate eggs and exchange them with each other. Then, why don’t you find out how students at Donghwa High school enjoyed Easter?

An Athletic Competition

O

n April 9th and 10th, Donghwa High school’s athletic competition, one of the biggest events in Donghwa High school, was held with the students’ hot passion. Don’t you want to know how fun and interesting it was?

T

here were many exciting games like dodge ball, kick ball and treading notdari for girls, and games like soccer, basketball and group jump-rope for boys. Also, there was the tug-of-war, the 400m relay and an obstacle race that many people could enjoy together. Among them, tug-of-war and the racing games were the most impressive ones for students because everyone became one and cheered each other all together.

A

lthough every class did their best, only four classes, 1-6, 1-8, 2-1, and 2-15, got an overall winner’s prize. Especially, 2-1 beat the others at almost all games; soccer, basketball, tug-of-war, the 400m relay race and the obstacle race. They received coupons that they could buy 160000wons’ worth of treats in the snack bar so that they bought some chocolate and gave it to all the teachers! They are awesome guys!

W

ith a lot of expectation, the male-teachers played a soccer match, too. Teachers were divided into two teams, Old Boys and Young Boys. Jinwoo Won and Seongwan Ruy for the Young Boys and Hyeontak Choi for the Old Boys scored goals. Finally, the Young Boys won the game by 2:1.

T

he survey about “WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING EVENT?” was conducted during the athletic competition. Many students participated in the survey actively, even though the weather was bad. Among the boys’ games, soccer received the most with 105 votes. Among the girls’ games, dodge ball was the best with 103 votes and among common games, the best was tug-of-war with 71 votes.

A

fter the competition, all the students at Donghwa High school cleaned the schoolyard. With all their efforts, the events could be ended clearly. But if students would empty the waste swiftly, the competition could be finished with a fresher schoolyard and nicer feelings, couldn’t it? Eunyoung Jang (1-8)

T

oday, ‘Sexual crime’ is becoming a huge problem in our society. According to the last five years’ statistics, sexual abuse occurred an average of 52 times a day from all over the country. Moreover, as movies based on a true story like ‘Don’t cry mama’, and ‘Dogani’ were released, the dispute lingered. Under these circumstances, an ‘Electronic anklet’, also known as an ankle monitor, has become the subject of discussion along with sexual abuse.

T T

his implementing system, however, is very controversial. The electronic anklet has to be charged by a machine, so if it is discharged, you can’t find out its location. Also, it is easy to cut off the device. Above all, the big question is whether this ‘Ankle monitoring system’ is a human-rights violation or not. Some people insist that a criminal is also a human being who has rights, and this system violates them. This controversy has continued for several years. On December 27, however, the debate on the ‘Ankle monitoring system’ was ended by the Korean Constitutional Court’s verdict, which said, “The system would be applied to people who recommit a crime. That is because although they had a chance not to be punished, they didn’t seize the chance. Thus, they are considered to give up their human rights. Also, citizens have the right to be safe.” So, the system was legalized.

A

n ‘Ankle monitoring system’ can reduce the rate of recidivism and decrease the nation’s anxiety. Even though this system has many problems the court reached its decision because sexual crimes are becoming more serious with time. However, to make a better, brighter future, not only must people know this system well but also use it well.

he electronic anklet is a device put on a person’s ankle who is likely to commit a crime, and it can trace the location of a person. In other words, it is a new fetter with IT technology. Sexual crime has a high rate of recidivism. If potential criminals wear the electronic anklets, the public can confirm the users’ location and monitor them continually reducing the possibility of another offense. Twenty two countries, including the US, the UK, Sweden, and Australia, have introduced the system and had a significant effect. Korea also has been enforcing ‘the Ankle monitoring system’ since 2008.

Hands of Love D

idn’t you yell at your mother or grandmother this morning? Or are you accustomed to it? If so, you have to read this story. This story we are going to tell you is about parents’ love, especially grandmothers’ love.

er’s Grandmoth hands After my mom’s funeral, I was raised by my grandma. She began to sell wild edible greens to help my dad who was making money by doing rough work. She always went to the hills and mountains to pick them and trimmed them all night. I hated staying home alone and the wild edible greens she took because I had to help my grandma trim them. Doing this colored the underside of my fingernails black, and they wouldn’t be clean after hundreds of hand washes. One day, there was an incident. My teacher said that we are going to have a general meeting for my entrance to middle school. I had to come over with my grandma that Saturday. I was so troubled about it. I didn’t want to let my teacher see my grandma’s old clothes, bent waist and black fingertips. After much hesitation, I told my grandma to come with a morose voice. The next day, my teacher sent me to her room. When I went there, I cried involuntarily. “G...Grandma!!” Her hands, held by my teacher, were full of scratches. She knew I felt ashamed about her, so she soaked her hands in bleach and scrubbed them with steel wool until the back of her hands were so chapped and flowed with blood.

C

an you feel parents’ love now? Like this, our parents love us very much. We know this fact but sometimes we aren’t good to our parents. Although we can’t stop being irritated by our parents, why don’t we say “I love you” to them once a day? Junghyun Lee (2-6)

s the first female leader of Korea, she has to satisfy peoples’ anticipation and turn away peoples’ eyes who feel uneasy about her to great belief. Also, she has to make good on her words and realize them with devoted behavior. All Koreans hope she will be one of the memorable presidents in their mind.

About Geunhye Park

On February 2nd, 1952, she was born. On August 15th, 1974, her mother passing away, she replaced her mother’s place, the first lady. On October 26th, 1979, after her father’s death, she came out from the Blue house. On April 2nd, 1998, she was elected as the 15th member of the National Assembly. n December 19th, 2012, with everyone’s expectation, Geunhye Park, well-known as the dictator’s daughter, was elected as the 18th president of Korea as the first female leader in Korean’s history. She recorded over 51.55% of turnout and returned to the Blue house where her childhood sadly remained. This has grabbed the attention of various foreign presses but a lot of them showed negative views. There was an article titled “Daughter of dictator wins the presidency” in the New York Times. Britain’s media BBC also reported that “Daughter of the dictator who ruled South Korea for 18 years has defeated the rival in the most competitive election in Korea’s history”.

during the hustings. The main pledges that she has promised are called “ten pledges for people’s happiness”, which concerns 3 areas: household fiances, jobs and community. For ‘household fiances’, president Park is committed to reduce the people’s worries and the burden of educational expense by reducing the private education expense and college tuition. Secondly, she promised to increase the number of jobs, and keep people’s job stable by providing an institutional strategy, and improve qualities of jobs. Lastly, she pledged to make a safe community by promoting a citizen-safe project: rooting out four social evils.

Have You Known This? Amazing News in Science Discovery of God Particle

O

n March 14th, the existence of Higgs particle was identified to be certain by CERN(Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire). Being called “God’s Hidden Particle”, Higgs made all the scientists excited. In the early universe, elementary particles existed symmetrically and had no mass. However, if the symmetry had remained unchanged, it wouldn’t have been possible to explain the origin of mass. In 1964, British physicists, Peter Higgs, came up with the Higgs mechanism to explain this. He suggested that elementary particles interact with the Higgs field and the resistance created by the progress turns into mass. LHC(Large Hadron Collider) which reenacts the moment of big bang was designed to demonstrate his hypothesis. The device accelerated the proton and made heat energy through the collision of the proton. This heat energy could generate the higgs. The arrangement of this theory became the ‘standard model’. According to this theory, the entire world is made up of seventeen ultimate particles. These particles are divided into six quarks, six leptons, the Higgs particle and the particles mediating the four forces. The discovery can contribute to not only understanding the law of nature but a wide variety of uses of the Higgs particle itself.

New energy trend: Shale gas

R

ecently, the IEA(International energy agency) has insisted that natural gas should be the only fossil fuel to increase in demand. Especially, in 2030, nontraditional gas like shale gas will form over 50 percent of gas productions. Shale gas is the gas in the rock of harden mud and has been produced in earnest today. The Earth is estimated to have about 1,687 TOE(Ton of Oil Equivalent) of shale gas reserves that are very cheap. The reserves can be used for the next 60 years. However, in the process of mining, there is a possibility of permeation of uranium to the underground water and it can also cause air pollution.

Environment-friendly bio plastic

D

ue to high prices of oil, it is necessary that an inexpensive resource for energy emerge. Many scientists have made various alternatives to oil. One of them is a bio plastic; a plastic which is made up of environment friendly biomass like corn and wood. It can be a substitute for oil based production and is good ones for health also. However, biomass based material is a little bit weak with high temperature and can cause agflation. Yeoryeong Oh (2-15)
