Want to be Special? Come to the Advanced English Class! I
n this global world, it has been the immutable truth that English is the number one universal language. Our school offers special opportunities for students who want more of English! If you are one of these students, come to the Advanced English Class! We, Sumin, Chaeyeon, are here to represent the Advanced English Class. As mentioned above, our class is especially designed for English lovers. We have morning speaking classes with the awesome native English teachers; Seg and Zane. It’s not one of the classes in the regular curriculum, which means there aren’t any tests or homework, so just come and feel free to talk. That’s it! It’s such a privilege to have extra time with them. If you always thought that an hour a week with them was not enough, this class is cut out for you.
I
nstead of East-Asian History class, we have English Culture class. In this class, we improve presentation skills in front of our classmates. We cover topics from various sources from not only textbook but also: YouTube, TED, CNN, and even TV shows. ALSO THERE IS NOT A MIDTERM EXAM, which will lighten your burden as well.
A
t this point of time, you might be vacillating when choosing between the Advanced English Class and regular ones, but do not worry. Every teacher in our school is trying to do their best to accommodate all your requests when it comes to your studies. As a matter of fact, we came up with the idea, which is having complementary class in 8th period, and it worked out well. Be creative, and politely ask what you have in mind.
P
ersonally, we also had concerns about signing up for this class as well. However, we chose to come here and don’t have a bit of regret at all. Getting to know good friends who have passion for English and lots of common interest is the biggest advantage of this class and it offsets all the disadvantages. You might find this funny but it is said that someone who likes English tends to be outgoing and welcoming, and we couldn’t agree more after spending half of this year together. No more teary eyes~ We get to spend two years together in a row. Simply say bye with a smile on your face, and say hi to your beloved friends next year. Why would you give up this great opportunity? Join us!
What we’ve done! hese are the pictures from our class picnic. Do you find something weird? Yes, we all wore Hanbok, a traditional costume of Korea, and went to Gyeongbok-palace. It was not the thing people usually do for the class picnic. Other classes usually have some fun eating and playing games, or maybe going on campus tours, but we are the Advanced English Class, so we decided to do something extraordinary. We not only had fun ourselves, but also did meaningful activities. For instance, we promoted Bibimbab to foreign tourists, and some of them even asked us to take pictures together since we were all wearing Hanbok which – we thought – helped foreigners to know more about Korea. (We felt like we were celebrities for a second!)

New cultures, New friends! There's no doubt that international communication is getting more and more important than ever before in the Global Era. To respond to the trend, Donghwa High School has had cultural exchange programs with several foreign schools. Through these programs, you can get a chance to meet people from other parts of the world and learn more about their cultures. If you are interested in making global friends and experiencing different cultures, why don't you participate in one of these programs next year?
Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School, Malaysia
O
n July 18th, students from Donghwa High School set off for Malaysia. Although they arrived past midnight, many teachers and students at Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School welcomed them with joy. If you want to feel the exact same thing that they did, just join this program! School life in Malaysia is quite different from the one you have in Korea. They are much more active than Korean students. They usually learn things by talking and sharing their ideas, not by the teacher's instruction. Even at the festival — Tshung Tsin Night and the welcoming performance of Kudat Pei Tsin High School — students willingly began it themselves rather than waiting for the teachers' command. The beauty of Malaysia is also enough to amaze you. You can experience many unique programs which you couldn't do in Korea such as: watching proboscis monkeys, baby crocodiles at the Klias Wetland, enjoying snorkeling at an island's splendid sea, and visiting headhunters' village!
Kano High School, Japan
I
f you want to go abroad and taste something new but have not enough time, then Kano High School in Gifu, Japan is the right place to go. As a part of the program, not only many classes such as math, English, and Chinese but also activated extracurricular programs after school are open to you. Also, if you want to experience Japanese life and culture, you can do whatever you want by staying with host families.
New Covenant Academy, The USA
D
o you want to have a cultural exchange? Donghwa High School gladly offers it to you. If you become a member of the program that Donghwa High School made with New Convenant Academy(NCA), you will visit famous landmarks in The USA such as: Disney Land, the Grand Canyon, University of California at Los Angeles(UCLA). You can also visit English classes at NCA, enjoy lots of things with your homestay friends, and expand your view of the world.

2013 DONGHWA FESTIVAL - Run and Find the Hidden
O
n August 30th, the 19th Donghwa festival was held with many expectations. The festival had an interesting theme - Sherlock Holmes - and consisted of three parts. Student at Donghwa High School
served as the detectives and struggled to find out who had stolen the support fund for the festival. The first who guessed the criminal correctly could take a prize worthy of 100,000won!
T
he first part started with an awesome chorus. The harmony between the piano and the choir was enough to move the audience. A Biblical drama ‘Moses’ was also remarkable: the voice actor for Jesus
was so realistic that it made everyone laugh. For the special performance, there were the byeongeomsul the performance of changing masks very quickly - and the magic show. Actors in the English play club, P&E, dressed like medieval Europeans and performed Les Miserables.
D
uring the second part, the students could go around the festival freely. The main stage was at Joshua hall. There were various performances including samulnori, the musical, and the concert.
Especially the musical club, Carpe, adapted the Fame, a story about school life in the arts highschool. The outstanding singing abilities of actors proved why Carpe is so famous and many people had fun with the parody of the romantic scene in the drama Secret Garden. Meanwhile, the basement hall was really packed and crowded due to the play club, Bireusomio. The play was about a comic episode at the mental hospital. Besides, the fashion club Lamode launched the F/W fashion show for the first time. The Rainmaker, the film making club screened movies about school violence. Also, the science club, ALLAM conducted lots of science experiments. Many campaigns and events, as well as the exhibition of the paintings and pictures, caught the students’ eyes. Those became the chances for the students to show off their talents.
T
he orchestral music marked a beginning of the third part. From this time, the other school students could also enjoy the festival. The comedian, Heonsu Son played the MC. In addition, the famous
dance teams Universe, Restart, and Holic were invited and danced Mirotic, BAAM and so on. Lastly, an hour-long enthusiastic concert of Dinggadingga and Chumsarang dropped the curtain of the 19th Donghwa festival.
B
y the way, don’t you want to know who was the criminal and who got the 100,000? Surprisingly, the criminal was Eunsin Jo, a PE teacher, and the prizewinner was a second-grade girl student.

Jeju Island, One of the Most Beautiful Places in Korea From September 25 to 27, freshmen of Donghwa High School went on a school trip to Jeju Island. Most of them were very excited because it was the first trip with classmates. The weather in Jeju Island was perfect to travel, and every place they visited was enough to move us. If you are planning to go to Jeju Island, you can get some tips about which places you need to go.
Day-1. Sangumburi → Riding experience → Seongsan Ilchulbong Arriving at Jeju Island, students went to Sagumburi first which was filled with purple silver grasses. The wind was high in there, but they couldn’t help taking pictures of a beautiful thatched garden. After riding horses, they went to Seongsan Ilchulbong. It also captured their attention a lot and it was fabulous to look down to the sea from there!
Day-2. Group A : Mt. Hal la → Talent show Group B : Geomunorem → Olle Roads → Talent show Students were divided into two groups according to the route they would go. Even though it would be very hard to go up, about 400 students chose the climbing course of Mt. Halla because of the spectacle that they could see at the end of climbing; a view of Baekrokdam was more valuable than anything else. Geomunoreum course was chosen from about 100 students. They had a time to think about the sad history in the underground tunnel that the Japanese made Koreans dig cruelly. The next course was Olle Roads. It was beautiful enough to fascinate all the students. The last event of the day was the highlight of the school trip; the talent show. Even though all classes practiced hard and one of the boys classes had a female costume, 1-13 got the first prize for the show. There was a secret that made them winner. They cast their homeroom and showed the power of unity.
Day-3 Chonjiyeon waterfall → Pillar-shaped joint → Hallym park, Hyeopjae beac On last day, students went to Chonjiyeon waterfall and pillar-shaped joint which are the places that you have to go in Jeju Island. Before leaving Jeju Island, they caught their breath and cooled off in the cavern and with the sea breeze at Hallym park and Hyeopjae beach. Through the school trip, students could promote friendly relationships among classmates and make some wonderful memories together.

Not Commonly-Known, Interesting Jobs in Korea Why don’t we jot down the career names that you know on the paper? Most of us generally don’t leave out these jobs; a lawyer, a teacher, a doctor. Even though Korea has over 20,000 kinds of jobs, it is sad that modern people knows only a few of these jobs. Then, let’s take a look at some not commonly-known jobs.
Fossil Fuel Clearing Researcher Fossil fuel has been polluting the environment for a long time, thus the need for the purification has risen recently. What a Fossil Fuel Clearing Researcher does is to transform environment-threatening fossil fuels, like coal and petroleum into environment-friendly fuels which create added value. To be a Fossil Fuel Clearing Researcher, it is recommended to major in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and environmental engineering. Technical completeness for commercialization is yet low and it is at an early stage of industrialization, so these majors for the field of developing clean energy hold a bright future.
Patent Attorney In a world that is constantly producing inventions and new products, it is very important to protect one’s industrial property rights. A Patent Agent is the one who does things like that. To be a Patent Agent, you have to take an entrance examination conducted by the Korean intellectual property office and train for one year. Also, one needs to acquire a wide knowledge about biology, chemistry, electrons, and machinery. Therefore, it is important to major in such relevant fields.
Cultural Assets Preservation Worker Five years ago, we lost Sungryemun, one of the invaluable cultural properties. Many people felt bad and realized the need for someone to protect our cultural properties. Cultural Assets Preservation Workers can do this. These people restore damaged cultural heritages and store them safely. Usually, they are recruited by open-hiring. They spend a few years to solve many preserving problems as assistances. After that, they can work alone. It would be helpful if you major in History or Chemistry.
Fair Trade Professional From time to time, the international trades (like FTA) have risen dramatically. So, managing relationships between producers and consumers has become more important. The people doing this work are called Fair Trade Professional. You don’t have to get particular licenses, but it’s important to participate in various impartial activities before you get employed. Obviously, the need in this field will arise because the number of trade will be increased. Why don’t you select Business Administration or Social Education for your major if you want to become a Fair Trade Professional? The more information you know about the jobs, the easier you can find the job suitable for your interest, and prepare for it. That’s why you need to search about lots of job to prepare your future.

The Same WORDS?? NO!!! Do you understand what’s going on in the cartoon on the right side? Penguin got confused among those people all speaking in British English. British English is a bit different from American English in the aspects of accent, pronunciation, intonation and etc. Moreover, WORDS have different meanings depending on where they are used; the United States of America(USA) or the United Kingdom(UK). Here are the words and the meanings that throw you into confusion. (To help you to read, read the words in single quotation marks NOT by its MEANING, but by the word ITSELF)
PUDDING ‘Pudding’ is a cooked sweet food made with flour, fat, and eggs in the US, but in the UK, it means dessert – they call a cooked sweet food as a ‘caramel custard’. So, the woman in the cartoon means “Today’s dessert is a chocolate cake”, not “It’s a chocolate flavored pudding.”
The FIRST FLOOR You know what? British people call the first floor of a building as the ‘ground floor’. Then where is the ‘first floor’ in the UK? It actually means the second floor. Interesting, isn’t it? So, if you want to go to the first floor in the UK, you must not push the ‘first floor’ button in the elevator, but push the ‘ground floor’ button instead!
DINNER The word ‘dinner’ means an evening meal in Korea and the US. However, in the UK, it means the midday meal. Furthermore, the word ‘tea’ has two meanings – an evening meal and a drink made by adding hot water to tea leaves or tea bags. So, in the UK, British people use the words ‘breakfast’, ‘dinner’, and ‘tea’ instead of using breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Therefore, it was Cheese on Toast for the midday meal, not for the evening meal. Can you NOW understand the cartoon? I know you can! :)

The Baby Box System, Will it Be Realized?
O
n June 12, 2013, Donong Station was bustling with students from Donghwa High School for the Baby Box Campaign. Recently, this activity began since lots of new-born infants have been heartlessly left. Although infants have been deserted seriously, there is still no appropriate solutions. The Baby Box Campaign was conducted to save infant’s lives as much as possible.
T
he Baby Box is the place for the parents that had no choice but leaving their child silently. As they don’t want their identity to be exposed and hardly find suitable places to entrust their babies, they choose the baby box. Mostly, single mothers or couples who are financially strapped inevitably put their infants in the steel-made box. This system was first derived in medieval Europe by the Pope and recently has reoccurred again in Hungary, Germany, the Czech Republic and so on. Japan was the first country in Asia to accept the scheme followed by South Korea in 2009.
O
n December, 2009, the Baby Box was first installed by Jongrak Lee, the pastor of Jusarang church in South Korea. In 2007, he found an infant in front of the church door who was almost dying from hypothermia. Thanks to the help of pastor Lee, the infant managed to cope with the symptoms. After undergoing the event, he soon came up with ideas to save the abandoned infants and decided to apply the Baby Box System. He sent e-mails to a hospital in the Czech Republic and accepted the system by following their advice. Ever since he made the baby box, about 180 new-born infants have been left in the box over the last three years. Unlike other countries, the Baby Box System in South Korea has not been institutionalized yet. There are large number of pros and cons arguing the issues instead of seeking the fine solutions.
PROS
CONS
It is vital for abandoned infants to have place to save their lives.
The system might promote people to leave their child easily and feel less guilty.
Due to the Act on Special Cases on concerning Adoption which forces to follow family relation registration act, infants are sadly abandoned in pitiful conditions by their parents.
As the infants are left with their identity unknown, it makes it hard for them to find their data after they grow.
Whether you have different points of view, the common important thing is that you should avoid to abandoning babies. As it is related with life, it should be considered carefully, and we should prepare a fine countermeasure for the frail infants.

Blackout, the Fear of Summer
W
hat can you do if all the power goes off when you are doing a surgery? Or what will you do if the television suddenly goes out when you are watching a very exciting match in the Olympics? These are not the situations that can happen someday, but real situations that happened a few years ago. On September 15th, 2011, many people who were at work like: schools, hospitals, stores, and aquariums got lots of problems and inconveniences because of a power cut.
I
f the demand exceeds the electric supply, the city goes ‘Blackout’. Blackout, the power outage, means that the cities and the surrounding areas lose electricity at the same time. It happens unexpectedly when the power usage skyrockets in a short time, or the generator stops for some reason. The result will be catastrophic. For example, it might cause many deaths because patients who are in an emergency can not be treated properly without the power. Traffic lights cannot function as well, which will lead to numerous road accidents causing hundreds of thousands of people stuck in the roads.
A
s you can see, modern society highly relies on electricity as the main energy source. Then, is there anything that we can do to prevent these disastrous misfortunes from happening? Let’s take a look at some tips for saving electricity.
HOW TO SAVE ELECTRICITY 1
Refraining from using the air conditioner between two to five
2
Maintaining the indoor temperature properly (between 26 and 28 degrees in summer, below 20 degrees in winter)
3
Using public transportations
4
Unplugging appliances when not using them
5
Turning off the lights in a room without people
I
n order to save electricity, ‘the Earth Hour’ campaign is being highly encouraged among people who are conscious about current power outage situations. The official date of it is March, 23rd and you can participate in this event by simply turning the lights off for an hour on that day. As the electricity cannot be stored, you should try to save it for rainy days!

Various Autumn Festivals around the World What did you do on Chuseok? Did you eat delicious traditional foods, meet relatives, and have a Charye, a memorial service? Chuseok is one of the biggest traditional festivals in Korea. It is the day to express gratitude of the harvest to ancestors and almost every country in the world has their own autumn festivals. Aren’t you curious about what kind of special events there are?
Mid-Autumn Day On August 15th in the lunar calendar, China celebrates a Mid-Autumn Day as one of the four biggest traditional festivals. It started during the Ju dynasty when the king celebrated the harvest and wished longevity to the moon. At that time, looking at the full moon was very common for the public, and after that, it has become a popular private festival. On Mid-autumn Day night, Chinese people perform a religious service and make a wish looking at the full moon. They also eat traditional food, Moon Cake: a small, rounded cake that is full of meat, nuts and something sweet inside.
Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day might be the most familiar foreign holiday to Koreans. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in USA and on the second Monday in October in Canada. It has been commemorated since the British Puritans arrived at the New World. They had a party which lasted for three days to thank God for the harvest. On that day, all the family members gather together to eat pumpkin pies and turkeys. Because of this, Thanksgiving Day is also famous for a slaughter of turkeys!
St. Dimitri’s Day Have you ever heard about St. Dimitri’s Day? It is an event like Chuseok in Russia. It comes on the Saturday before November 8th every year. In 1380, the Grand Prince of Moscow, Dimitri Donskoi, defeated the Mongolian troops in a battle. To honor the dead who were killed in the battle, he created a gathering on November 8th, which become St. Dimitri’s Day. On that day, family and relatives assemble to share a new crop and newly harvested fruits. They also visit their family graves, have vodka while thinking about their ancestors’ achievements, and throw the year’s harvest to birds. Junghyun Lee (2-6) WORDS
