ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication TWO THOUSAND FIFTEEN CONVOCATION

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication

The Cronkite School is widely recognized as one of the nation’s premier professional journalism programs. Rooted in the timehonored values — accuracy, responsibility, objectivity, integrity — that characterize its namesake, the school fosters journalistic excellence and ethics among students as they master the complex professional skills needed to succeed in the digital media world of today and tomorrow.

The Cronkite School’s 1,700 students consistently lead the country in national competitions. Over the past decade, Cronkite has been No. 1 in the nation in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence competition and the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts awards and has finished in the top 10 in the Hearst Journalism Awards each year. Cronkite students win more than 100 journalism and public relations awards annually.

Students are guided by a faculty that is made up of both world-class media scholars and award-winning professional journalists. Leading journalists at Cronkite include former Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr., BET Vice President

Retha Hill, Minneapolis Star Tribune Editor Tim McGuire, CNN Wall Street correspondent Susan Lisovicz, Sacramento Bee Executive Editor Rick Rodriguez, Oregonian Editor Peter Bhatia and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Steve Doig and Jacquee Petchel.

The Cronkite School continues to lead the field of journalism education with its innovative use of the “teaching hospital” method, providing both unparalleled learning opportunities for students and important news content to the community, state, region and nation. Arizona PBS, one of the nation’s largest public television stations, is now part of Cronkite, making it the largest media outlet operated by a journalism school in the world. Arizona PBS serves as a hub for the Cronkite School’s full-immersion professional programs and a testing ground for new approaches in journalism.

Cronkite students participate in a dozen professional immersion programs, guided by award-winning journalists and communication experts, applying what they have learned in the classroom in real-world learning environments. Students cover the most important issues of the day from

public affairs news bureaus in Phoenix and Washington, D.C. They produce a nightly newscast that reaches 1.9 million households on Arizona PBS. They report on sports from multimedia bureaus in Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Students in the Public Relations Lab develop campaigns for client companies, while Carnegie-Knight News21 multimedia journalists conduct national data-driven investigations into issues critical to Americans.

In the Public Insight Network Bureau, students work with professional news organizations to deepen their connections to audiences, and in the New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, they use digital technologies to forge the future of journalism. New immersion programs include the Reynolds Business Reporting Bureau in which students report on business, finance and economics and the Digital Production Bureau, which serves as a multimedia development and production hub.

Elsewhere at Cronkite, the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism provides education and training to professional journalists and Cronkite Global Initiatives brings international journalists to the school for study and training.

All of these initiatives take place in a state-of-the-art building that is unparalleled in journalism education. Cronkite has generated national and international attention from educators and media professionals. The Times of London, The New York Times and USA Today have pointed to the Cronkite School as an innovative leader in the future of journalism education, a pioneer that is helping to shape the future of news and digital media.

About Our Graduates

The Cronkite School has nearly 10,000 alumni throughout the Valley, across the country and around the world. Many are leaders in television, digital media, newspapers, radio, magazines and public relations.

In 1993, the school inducted its first class into the Cronkite Alumni Hall of Fame. The charter inductees were Al Michaels (’66), the iconic American sports broadcaster, and ABC News foreign correspondent Bill Redeker (’71). Other notable inductees include CNN International anchor Becky Anderson (’94); Arizona Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall (’91); Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times reporter Julie Cart (’80); CNN Worldwide Senior Latin American Affairs Editor Rafael Romo (’95); FOX 11 News anchor Christine Devine (’87); public relations executive Ray Artigue (’76); and Arizona Republic Executive Editor Nicole Carroll (’91).

Keynote Speaker

Judy Woodruff is the award-winning co-anchor and managing editor of the “PBS NewsHour,” one of the most respected newscasts on television. For more than four decades, she has been a pioneer for women in journalism, covering politics and news for CNN, NBC and PBS.

In 1976, Woodruff was one of the few female reporters covering Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign. She went on to become a White House correspondent for NBC News from 1977-1982 and wrote “This is Judy Woodruff at the White House.”

In 2013, Woodruff became part of the first female co-anchor team on national TV news with Gwen Ifill on the “PBS NewsHour.” Previously, she served for 12 years as a CNN anchor and senior correspondent and hosted “Inside Politics.” She also was the chief Washington correspondent for “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” on PBS from 1983-1993.

Woodruff is the recipient of the Cine Lifetime Achievement Award, the Duke Distinguished Alumni Award and the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in Broadcast Journalism/Television,

among other honors. She is a graduate of Duke University, where she is a trustee emerita.

She is a founding co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation and serves on the boards of the Freedom Forum, the Newseum, the Duke Endowment and the Urban Institute.

Student Speaker

Megan Thompson is graduating with bachelor’s degrees from the Cronkite School and the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice. She also has a minor in communications.

Thompson was an award-winning reporter for Cronkite News, working her way from the assignment desk to producer and then to reporter and anchor. She was the anchor for the first 5 p.m. “Cronkite News” broadcast on Arizona PBS as part of an expanded news block that leads into the “PBS NewsHour.”

Thompson interviewed “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts with fellow student Analise Ortiz at the 2014 Cronkite Award Luncheon. For the past three years, she has been producing shows and shooting stories for 12 News, KPNX-TV, covering the Super Bowl in Arizona and

reporting live on “Arizona Nightly News.”

Thompson has won several journalism honors, including a regional first-place award for breaking news reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists. She also placed third in the nation for collegiate anchoring at the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts and finished fourth in TV feature reporting in the Hearst Journalism Awards.

This summer, Thompson will begin working as a morning news reporter for KGUN-9, the ABC affiliate in Tucson, Ariz.

Walter Cronkite (1916-2009)

ASU’s journalism program was named in honor of former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite in 1984.

The relationship started when Tom Chauncey, longtime owner of the CBS affiliate in Phoenix and a leading supporter of journalism education at ASU, contacted his old friend in an effort to advance the program. An endowment on behalf of the program was soon established and the school was named after “the most trusted man in America.”

Over the next quarter of a century, Cronkite lent much more than his name to the school. He was closely involved — advising leadership, guiding students and faculty and traveling to Arizona each year to personally give the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism to one of the nation’s top journalists. The most special relationship, though, was with “our students,” as Cronkite would always call them. Young women and men, some with parents barely old enough to remember Cronkite behind the anchor desk, lit up when he walked into a classroom. They hung on his every word as he thoughtfully answered their questions about the profession he so loved. They lined up just to shake his hand, and he loved every minute of it.

In what turned out to be Cronkite’s last visit to ASU in 2007 before declining health

prevented him from traveling, a group of 100 students gathered with just a few minutes notice that Cronkite was in the building. He held them spellbound as he spoke about covering World War II, Vietnam, Apollo, Watergate and presidents from Truman to Reagan — and of how important “our school” was to him.

Cronkite died in 2009, but the school continues to be guided by his principles: accuracy, fairness and adherence to the highest standards of journalism.
