Master of Arts in Sports Journalism
Master of Arts in Investigative Journalism
This program offers immersive learning beginning with a multimedia “boot camp,” which trains students to report, write and produce content for broadcast, digital and print platforms. From there, students dive deeper into advanced broadcast production, advanced online media, investigative reporting, business reporting, Spanish-language news, transborder coverage, digital media entrepreneurship or strategic communications.
This program follows the same hands-on, immersive model of the MMC program and prepares students for careers in sports media and communications. Students begin with an immersive “boot camp” experience, which trains them to tell stories across broadcast, digital and print platforms.
This is the first graduate degree in investigative journalism in the country. The program prepares students to launch high-level investigative reporting careers at the nation’s most prestigious news organizations, producing storytelling with deep public impact.
From there, students dive deeper into enterprise sports reporting and advanced skills courses. Students have opportunities to produce play-by-play commentary for Pac-12 Networks and cover other Arizona sporting events, such as Major League Baseball.
It is designed for students coming from a range of academic and professional backgrounds, including career switchers with experience in fields such as law, health, business, government and the arts.
The MMC culminates in a capstone experience with one of Cronkite’s professional immersion programs: • Cronkite News - Phoenix: Students produce a daily Arizona PBS newscast that reaches 1.9 million households and digital content for cronkitenews.azpbs.org, Cronkite News social platforms and partner sites across Arizona. • Cronkite News - Washington Bureau: Students cover Congress, the White House and the U.S. Supreme Court for Cronkite News and partner newsrooms. • Cronkite News - L.A. Students complete capstone experiences in a Cronkite professional program: • Cronkite News - Phoenix Sports Bureau: Students produce broadcast and digital sports coverage in one of the country’s top sports markets for Cronkite News and partner newsrooms. Students also cover special events, such as the NCAA Final Four and the Summer Olympic Games. Their work appears on Cronkite News as well as partner news platforms, including Fox Sports Arizona, the Pac-12 Networks, USA Today Network and si.com. • Cronkite News - L.A. Sports Bureau: Students produce broadcast and digital coverage of professional sports for California and national media outlets. Their work appears on Cronkite News as well as partner news platforms. • Sports Knowledge Lab: In this immersion experience, students produce and present curated and original multiplatform content that illuminates the impact of sport on society.
• New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab: Journalism, engineering, design and business students collaborate to create cutting-edge digital products and launch new businesses. • Digital Audiences Lab: Students work in an agency-style setting to research, create and execute engagement strategies for real media clients.
From there, students dive deeper into investigative techniques, taking courses taught by Cronkite faculty and leaders from other ASU schools. Finally, students complete a capstone experience in the Cronkite School’s Howard Center for Investigative Journalism, where students spend a semester producing investigative stories of national and international importance to be distributed through Cronkite School partner news organizations, such as The Washington Post, USA Today, NBC News, PBS NewsHour and the Center for Public Integrity.
