How many pounds would Jack’s bag weigh if he took the gold pen, bag of gems, harp, game console, and goose?

With the full bag on his back, Jack ran for the beanstalk. But the giant was catching up . . .

Harp = 4 pounds

Gold pen = 2 pounds

THIS IS USUALLY WHERE WE FIND EMMA.

The Similan Islands are surrounded by large coral reefs. A reef is made up of the bones of millions of tiny sea animals called coral. Coral reefs are home to hundreds of types of sea creatures. Crabs, rays, worms, fish, and eels all live in coral reefs.

C’MON OUT, SCARFACE! I’VE GOT A NICE TREAT FOR YOU!

keep safe

About Moray Eels

Here are some tornado safety tips. During a bad storm, follow weather updates on your phone, computer, radio, or television. A tornado watch means that the weather is right for a tornado to possibly form. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted nearby. Find shelter immediately! Keep in mind that a twister can form suddenly with no warning. Just before a tornado hits, the sky may have a greenish color, there may be hail, or there could be a large, dark cloud. Any of these signs means you should rush to take cover.

Moray eels are a type of fish that live in warm oceans around the world. There are more than 200 species of moray eels. Almost all of them have large mouths with very sharp teeth. Moray eels usually don’t chase after their prey. Instead, they wait and lunge out when prey swims past. Though the diver in this story was attacked, moray eels generally don’t attack people.

The safest place to be during a tornado is underground. If you’re in a house or other building with no underground shelter, go to the ground floor. Try to find a small space with no windows. Place a mattress or heavy blanket over your head to protect yourself from falling debris.

Moray Eels • Moray eels range in size from 8 inches (20 cm) to more than 13 feet (4 m) long. • Some moray eels can weigh more than 80 pounds (36 kg).

It is not safe to be in a car during a tornado. Instead, get out and find shelter in a building. If there isn’t one nearby, lie in a ditch with your hands over your head. Stay away from trees, which can fall on top of you.

• These eels eat fish, squid, octopuses, crabs, and shrimp. • A moray eel has one main fin that stretches the length of its body.

The strength of the wind inside a tornado is measured on the Fujita (foo-JEE-tuh) Scale. An F0 tornado is the weakest and F5 is the strongest. F5 tornadoes have winds faster than 260 miles per hour (418 kph) and can blow a whole house off the ground!

HELP!

Here are some tornado safety tips. During a bad storm, follow weather updates on your phone, computer, radio, or television. A tornado watch means that the weather is right for a tornado to possibly form. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted nearby. Find shelter immediately!

Scary Amusement Parks

The car— it’s slipping!

I’m so excited! I haven’t been on the Comet since high school!

Wait...

Ahhhhh! Noooooo!

Four years later, on July 23, 1968, another accident occurred.

We’re going to fall!

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the echoing screams of past visitors, too.

Rocks in Our World Every day, you see and use rock— sometimes without knowing it. Houses, schools, and other buildings are often made out of rock. Rocks are needed to make cars and computers. Even the grayish-black part of a pencil comes from rock.

Rocks are made up of solid substances called minerals. A rock can be made up of just one mineral or several different minerals. The part of a pencil that writes is made from a mineral called graphite.

Sometimes cracks appear in Earth’s crust deep underground. Magma oozes up into the cracks. Then, over thousands of years, the magma cools and hardens and becomes igneous rock.

Scientists place all the rocks on Earth into three main groups. Igneous rock is one of them. The other two are called sedimentary (sed-uh-MEN-tuhree) and metamorphic (met-uhMOR-fik) rock. Each type of rock forms in a different way.

The Declaration of Independence would not have been written without birds! In the 1700s, people used pens made from long feathers of ducks, geese, turkeys, and other large birds. These pens were called quills.

Most colonists paid the taxes forced on them by the British until England passed the Tea Act in 1773. People in the colonies loved to drink tea—and they drank a lot of it.

Benjamin Franklin offered to pay for the tea that was destroyed with his own money if the tax law was revoked. It wasn’t, so Franklin kept his money.

Iceberg Right Ahead! On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanic was slicing through the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The weather was clear. The sea was calm. The ship was less than three days away from New York City. At 11:40 p.m., one of the lookouts saw something in the water. “Iceberg right ahead!” he warned the bridge.

First Officer William Murdoch gave the order to steer left. It was too late, though. The boat scraped against the iceberg. To the people on the bridge, there seemed to be no damage. However, under the water the iceberg had ripped open the Titanic’s starboard side. Water started pouring into the ship.

We’ve struck an iceberg—a big one— but there’s no danger.

–Harvey Collyer, a passenger, to his wife, Charlotte

The Titanic had four smokestacks. However, only three were real. The one closest to the stern, or the back of the ship, was fake. It was added to improve the ship’s appearance.

The Titanic had received a warning about icebergs in its path. However, the captain did not post extra lookouts or slow down the ship. It is believed that he thought the Titanic could stay clear of the ice.

Jane maneuvered her wheelchair between two sets of shelves and reached for a book about wildflowers from 1903. Its crumbling cover was made of pale blue leather. Inside the book, was a faded inscription:

The Secret Room The next morning, while his parents were busy unpacking, Zach opened the door to the basement and began to climb down the stairs. “Wait for me, Zach,” called Sophie from the top of the stairs. Zach was relieved to have his sister’s company. They walked to the armoire. Zach directed the flashlight’s beam onto the floor. Zach and Sophie gasped. Just as on the previous day, a puddle of dark red blood seeped from under it. “Where’s the blood coming from?” asked Zach. Together, Zach and Sophie pushed hard on one side of the armoire. With an ear-piercing shriek, it slid sideways. Behind the armoire was a metal door with a lever-like handle. “It’s a secret room,” whispered Sophie, nervously. Zach reached for the handle and pushed it down. The heavy door swung open. 18

moved slowly down the aisle. Suddenly, the air around Jane turned icy cold. It was so cold, she felt as if she’d climbed into a refrigerator. Did someone just turn on the air conditioner at full blast? she thought. Shivering, Jane looked at the shelves to her left and right. The feeling of being watched was now even more powerful. The hairs on the back of her neck rose. Then, out of nowhere . . . Whoosh . . . Thud! A book flew off one of the shelves and fell on the floor directly in front of her.

As Jane carefully turned the fragile pages, she suddenly got the feeling that someone was watching her. She twisted her head to look around, but the aisle was empty. Jane placed the wildflower book back on the shelf. Then, from the next aisle, she heard the sound of someone turning the pages of a book. She moved to the end of the aisle and peered into the shadows. The library’s dim lighting made it difficult to see. “Hello?” she said. But the only sound Jane heard was the creaking of the wooden floorboards under her wheels as she

A strange buzzing noise filled the air. Then ping, ping. Two bulbs hanging from the room’s ceiling flickered on. 19
