Just before the pandemic hit, I finished revising ten of my Just Historic Communities books, which brought back many memories of visiting historic villages, taking hundreds of pictures, and learning about life in those earlier days. Although I now stay home most of the time, I often go for walks in or around the historic areas near my home, which make me feel mindful of history—especially now, when people all over the world are protesting the racism and inequality in the past and present.
Grateful for so much !
I feel gratitude for the kindness people have shown to one another. I am grateful to the wonderful frontline workers who have helped us throughout this pandemic. I am also grateful to the teachers and librarians who have worked hard to educate students from a distance. I hope to see you back at school soon. Stay safe and keep healthy! See page 45

NEW! Charles Darwin “From his childhood to his famous voyage of discovery,…this colorful volume introduces Charles Darwin and presents the basics of his life’s work. Readers new to the subject will find this an accessible, very readable account of the man, his times, and his significance, while those familiar with Darwin will probably gain new insights. Rather than blocks of text, the writing presents relevant topics through a mixture of historical passages offering background facts and explanations along with lists, quotes, and short features on related topics. The many illustrations, mainly archival and modern photos, are well chosen and clearly reproduced. A promising beginning for the Scientists Who Changed the World series (6 titles) and a worthwhile addition to library collections.” —Booklist

Professor Tangent is very forgetful and has accidentally put the lunch orders for the class in the paper shredder. The class collects all the little strips, and they add up all the different sections to make sure the total equals the number of kids in the class. They create a number line to get the total. But Chef Addie just made them all pizza instead!
Class 301 has won a real truckload of number cubes. Fractions Frank, the caretaker, has found some boxes that hold different amounts of cubes—ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. The children see how the smaller boxes can all fit into the larger ones. They put these groups in columns to create a numeral. And just when they think they are done, another truck pulls up and they have to start again!

Code Monkeys Fix Bugs “With its buoyant, engagingly interactive design, the Code Monkeys series (4 titles) effectively breaks down complex tech elements for younger readers, explaining the ins and outs of coding and computer science. After first explaining the basics of computer coding and programs and providing a short list of terms to watch out for, the book, in bright, blocky text and art, explores what a bug means in the context of computer code, what kinds of problems it causes, and how to fix it. Simple quizzes demonstrate the logic skills required for debugging code, with answers to each problem handily provided. In addition to the well-labeled activities, the back matter includes an index and a glossary of clearly defined terms. For young tech fans with a budding interest in computer science, this accessible offering will be eye-opening.” —Booklist
