“In this beautiful book, the cover shows... a world of children. I think we really need to help our children learn how to be kind... it’s a book that really touched my heart. It’s an important book.” —Ken Setterington, CBC Radio Next Chapter Children’s Panel “A World of Kindness will undoubtedly be used as a tool for teaching and instilling kindness, especially as Pajama Press has provided a downloadable poster (https://pajamapress.ca/resource/a_world_of_kindess_extra_ content/) and a teaching guide (https://pajamapress.ca/resource/a_world_of_kindness_teaching_guides/) on its website. Moreover, with all royalties going to Think Kindness, a project that aspires to inspire kindness in schools and other communities, purchasing A World of Kindness is a win-win for all. But, at its heart, A World of Kindness is a compendium of beautiful messages in words and art to help make our world, starting with our youngest readers, a place of graciousness and goodwill. With such benevolence, this picture book will triumph with purptose.”—Helen Kubio, Canlit for Little Canadians “The child-friendly questions posed and the scenarios depicted provide food for thought and discussion about the importance of taking action. Ultimately, young readers may realize that kindness starts with one small act, rippling outward to touch others and improve the world.” —ILA Literacy Daily, “Conflict: Awareness, Understanding, and Resolution”
Nicole Testa Illustrated by
Annie Boulanger The Governor General's Award-nominated picture book available in English for the first time Lili Macaroni loves drawing butterflies, counting the stars, and being exactly who she is—Lili Macaroni. That is, until she starts kindergarten. There her classmates tell her that her hair is like a pumpkin, her eyes are squinty blueberries, and her laugh is like a parrot’s squawk. She has never felt such unhappiness before. It makes her want to erase herself and draw a brand-new Lili. Then she reconsiders. Does she really want to erase her hair that’s just like Mom’s? Her eyes just like Grandma’s? Her Grandpa’s infectious laugh?
With her parents’ help, she creates a polka-dotted butterfly to wear at her collar, publicly announcing her own resilience and symbolically letting her sorrows be flown away. And when she explains the butterfly to her classmates, Lili discovers she has begun a powerful conversation, and that everyone has some trouble to be carried away on butterfly wings. In this accessible exploration of emotions and self-esteem, Nicole Testa and Annie Boulanger create a relatable heroine with inborn ingenuity and warm family support.
Nicole Testa discovered her enthusiasm for writing when working with second-grade children. Her first novel, The Eye of the Night, was published in 1998. She continues to create children’s stories in French Canada, where she is often inspired by nature.
Annie Boulanger was born in Abitibi, Quebec, where she found her passion for visual art at a young age. Her studies at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue inspired her to expand her creativity into photography and cinema. She is an avid traveler and the mother of two boys.

Mies van Hout Text by
John Spray Cats take center stage for a colorful and whimsical celebration of feline personalities featuring the eyepopping illustrations of Mies van Hout. What do cats think when they get caught in the rain, or when a bird is just out of reach? If they could tell us, their voices would be full of charisma and attitude. Cats have been our companions for thousands of years. From the sandy roads of Ancient Egypt to the shopping bag left on the kitchen counter, felines have always embraced their curiosity.
With a lot of history comes a lot of personality. Charming, capricious free verse from author John Spray pairs brilliantly with the striking art of celebrated illustrator Mies van Hout in this delightful tribute to cats.

Mireille Messier Illustrated by
Gabrielle Grimard Discover the sights, sounds and magic of a night at the ballet that will prepare even the youngest of children for their first theatrical experience.

Beep! Beep! go the taxis. Voof! go the velvet curtains. The Nutcracker ballet and New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House come to life in this onomatopoeic representation of a little girl’s experience at the ballet. From the swish of her dress and the tick-tick-tick of the conductor’s baton to the twelve bongs of the clock and the pitter-patter of dancers’ feet, this special evening is filled with sensory treats for the eyes and especially the ears. And did she enjoy the ballet? The answer is a big smooch on her father’s cheek.
Written by Mireille Messier, Nutcracker Night is a celebration of a Christmas classic that is often a child’s first experience of the ballet. Award-winning illustrator Gabrielle Grimard infuses each scene with warm holiday colors and a richness that will make young readers feel they are really there. An author’s note enriches the text with further information and a brief summary of the famous ballet.
Mireille Messier hails from Montreal but calls Toronto home. Her picture book The Branch was shortlisted for the Ontario Library Association’s Blue Spruce Award in 2018. In addition to her career in books, Mireille has also worked as a voiceover artist and as a screenwriter for children’s television. She enjoys flexing her creative muscles in both English and French. Gabrielle Grimard transformed her love of design into a career in illustration over the course of her studies at Concordia University and the University of Quebec. In 2018, Gabrielle’s picture book Stolen Words won the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award and was a finalist for the TD Canadian Children’s Book Award. Not My Girl was a USBBY Outstanding International Book. Her creativity has been applied to children’s publishing, advertising, and educational contexts.

François Thisdale A growing number of curious children discover their village’s most enigmatic figure has an unexpectedly beautiful job to do. Every afternoon at four o’clock, Mister Rodriguez steps out of a narrow laneway and strolls through the street. The village children watch him go, ever more curious about the enigmatic old man with the bushy white mustache. Some say they’ve seen him float above the ground. Others say he played a piano without touching a single key. The truth, though, is more beautiful than any of the children could have imagined.
TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award-winning illustrator François Thisdale brings a touching story to life with delicacy and heart.

Brian Deines During World War One, a young girl slips her teddy bear into a care package for her father, a medic posted to the trenches of France. Although her father dies in the battle of Passchendaele, his belongings are shipped back to his family, along with the toy bear, which today sits in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. In 1915, 37-year-old Lawrence Browning Rogers enlisted in the Fifth Canadian Mounted Rifles, leaving behind his wife, two children, and their farm in East Farnham, Quebec. Over the next two and a half years, the family exchanged hundreds of letters, and daughter Aileen sent her beloved Teddy overseas to keep her father safe. Teddy returned home safely, but Lieutenant Rogers did not. He was killed in the battle of Passchendaele. Eighty-five years later, Lawrence's granddaughter found Teddy, the letters,
and other war memorabilia packed away in a briefcase. And she discovered a moving story of one family's love and sacrifice - a story shared by the families of so many soldiers who have lost their lives in the defense of their country. Accompanied by family photographs and Brian Deine's poignant art, A Bear in War is more than one family's testament to a brave soldier. It is a gentle introduction to war, to Remembrance Day, and to the honor of those who have served their countries.

Told from the perspective of new parents anticipating and then welcoming their baby to the world, this touching love letter to families by Governor General’s Literary Award–nominated author Deborah Kerbel describes with lyrical grace all of the promise held by new life. As the seasons change from fall through winter and into spring, the expectant parents’ anticipation over the baby’s arrival is mirrored in the animals around the family’s seaside home, marrying the natural world to the family’s
experience. Suzanne Del Rizzo, author-illustrator of My Beautiful Birds—a New York Times Notable Children’s Books selection and winner of the 2018 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award—adds an intricately tactile element with her lush illustrations rendered in polymer clay and acrylic wash.

Every librarian should make it a point to order this delightful book.” —NY Journal of Books “Veteran author Ann Ingalls has produced a book with… much lighthearted play with language that will delight younger readers just learning about verbal humour as well as teachers who could use this book as a lesson on the pun as literary device….[Dean Griffiths] has filled the pages of Pencil with familiar objects which are candycolourful and plastic in their contours, as well as expressive images of the two dark-eyed, dark-haired children…” —CM Magazine

Princess Pistachio: 2014 OLA Best Bet Princess Pistachio and Maurice the Magnificent: 2018 Canadian Children’s Book Centre Best Books for Kids & Teens Spring 2018 selection
“Bright, swirling, busy spreads in warm gouache colors enhance this simple tale of a family of California quails, reminiscent of Make Way for Ducklings….Whittingham…[employs] rhythm and repetition to both delineate characters and propel the plot. Pedersen imbues her quail chicks with lots of personality by focusing on their wide, white faces and bouncing topknots.” —Kirkus Reviews
Princess Pistachio: “The skillful combination of text and illustrations addresses many serious concerns of early childhood—and even of parenthood—without straying from the book’s tone of fun and frivolity....A playful and entertaining take on children’s perennial questions surrounding ideas of personhood, family and community.”—Kirkus Reviews Starred Review
“Especially winsome are close-ups of Queenie…The lovely illustrations and lyrical language, the pairing of curiosity and caution, and the opportunity for youngsters to join in the reading make this a great choice for group sharing.” —School Library Journal
Princess Pistachio and Maurice the Magnificent: “Irrepressible Princess Pistachio is back in all her enthusiastic glory….Gay’s easy, breezy syntax is wonderfully descriptive even as it skillfully addresses life lessons about friendship, self-involvement, and forgiveness. The cast of characters is eccentric and diverse, and teacher Mr. Grumblebrain’s name is wonderfully inventive. Ink, watercolor, and colored pencil illustrations are full of life and humor, perfectly complementing the action. Breathless, laugh-out-loud fun.”—Kirkus Reviews Starred Review
“Spring colors abound in green grass and clover, fluffy yellow chicks, and indigo-plumed parents as the quails learn a lesson from their littlest one about appreciating the beauty all around us.” —Foreword Reviews

Princess Pistachio and the Pest: “In four breathless, fast-paced chapters, Gay once again weaves a frantically funny tale with deliciously named characters, while subtly recognizing some underlying concerns regarding sibling responsibility and difficulties with adult-child communication. Descriptive and age-appropriate language flows naturally and is in perfect tandem with the brightly hued illustrations that depict redheaded, freckle-faced Pistachio’s every changing emotion.Young readers will cheer for her. Long live Princess Pistachio.” —Kirkus Reviews Starred Review

2018 OLA Forest of Reading Kid Committee Summer Reading List selection “Punctuating Nia’s thoughtful, present-tense narration with her stories about Dewi, Kadarusman effectively weaves a gentle tale of love and loss and illuminates the power of storytelling. A thought-provoking peek into a culture deserving of more attention in North America.” —Kirkus Reviews “A stark setting combines with striking characters…The novel does not offer simple solutions but instead wraps up Nia’s story in a way that demonstrates her willingness and ability to stand up for herself. Girl of the Southern Sea is an uplifting novel about hope and the power of storytelling.”—Foreword Reviews “Nia is a wonderful character – resilient, courageous and independent….Kadarusman gives her readers a young rebel as the protagonist of this novel….Young adult readers in the junior grades will find Girl of the Southern Sea an entertaining and interesting novel. A glossary of Indonesian terms and a map will help with comprehension. The novel would be an excellent starting point from which to study Indonesian culture as well as the effects of poverty on young women in Indonesia and elsewhere in the world….Highly Recommended.” —CM Magazine

018 CBC Books “13 Canadian middle-grade books to watch for this fall” 2 selection 2018 Junior Library Guild selection “As a work of fragmented and painful memories from the time Van was between the ages of four and eight, the narrative is impressively credible, capturing her feelings of confused abandonment, visceral descriptions of her life in Ho Chi Minh City, and gradual adjustment to being separated from her immediate family. Also well integrated are the family’s hardened cynicism towards the communist government and their determination to forge on despite poverty and corruption. Family photographs and appended interviews with both Van’s parents add a particular poignancy to her narrative.”—Booklist “The story is told from Van’s childhood perspective, with age-appropriate vocabulary and emotional heft. But readers of all ages will be immediately drawn to the simple, direct narration….[T]he authors eschew sentimentality and sensationalism, creating a straightforward autobiography that is truthful about resilience and the often unpredictable ways children act and react.”—Quill & Quire Starred Review “With simple but engaging language, Skrypuch recounts Van Ho’s true story of her lonely and hard life in Vietnam during the years she was separated from her family….This illuminating chapter book respects an often overlooked demographic, providing transitioning readers a truthful yet age-appropriate introduction to big issues that still affect people to this day.”—Kirkus Reviews

The Most Talked-About Book On Our List! 2018 USBBY Outstanding International Books List selection 018 Horn Book, “August 2018 Back-to-School Horn Book Herald: 2 Intermediate”selection “Much like the boy’s ever-transforming anxieties, panels shift from slender, compressed squares to sweeping double-page spreads. The otherworldly glow of the black-and-white palette, too, elegantly underscores the boy’s ongoing battle against darkness. More than a moving portrayal of one boy’s struggle, this is also a magnifying lens through which to identify and discuss mental illness with readers of all ages. Don’t let its title or page count fool you, Small Things’ effects are monumental.”—Booklist Starred Review “[An] incredibly moving tale…This wordless, picture book–size graphic novel is rendered in beautiful gradients of pencil….[A] sympathetic examination of anxiety that never assigns blame…VERDICT With direction from educators, guidance counselors, or parents, this poignant title will resonate with those dealing with mental illness. “A boy struggles to fit in at a new school in this wordless story with a big message about childhood anxiety and the power of kindness and acceptance….[The illustrations] depict the insidious nature of worry…”—Foreword Reviews Starred Review “The late Australian artist Tregonning’s wordless graphic tale, completed posthumously with help from Shaun Tan, captures the way anxiety can ravage children’s lives….Tregonning creates a visual language for the pain of depression and anxiety, and her story may provide a measure of hope to those who might otherwise have given up in despair.”—Publishers Weekly
