MARRIAGE/ SINGLE VOWS 2 Samuel 11:1-5

Lead Pastor: Greg Dumas

SCRIPTURE 2 Samuel 11:1-4 (NIV) In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. 2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.” 1

OBSERVATION •

No one enters a marriage or a relationship planning to have an affair. • You have to plan to “NOT” have an affair and establish safeguards early. • You have to realize that you are susceptible. • You can be a Christian person and full of integrity and still be drawn into an affair. • If you lack judgment and don’t have a plan you are statistically likely to have an affair. • Divorce devastates the nuclear family and God’s redemptive picture of community and love. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

APPLICATION 1. Realize we are all susceptible. (1 Corinthians 10:12-13; Romans 9:20) 2. Consider the devastation. (Proverbs chapter 5:3-11; Proverbs 6:23-35) 3. Establish safeguards when you are strong. (Proverbs 4:23; 14:22) Do not: (Galatians 6:7) 1. Spend time alone with the opposite sex. 2. Discuss your marriage with opposite sex. 3. Frequent questionable environments (television, internet, chat rooms, texting, bars and clubs, porn shops). Do: (Proverbs 16:3) 1. Nurture your relationship with Christ together. a. Pray together b. Read the Bible together c. Come to church together 2. Build up your spouse. 3. Always water your own garden. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for fidelity. Thank you for covering my sin, my mistakes, and my poor choices with your redeeming blood. Thank you that I am washed in your grace and clean before your eyes. I am recommitting my ways to you Lord. I want to serve you and love you. I want to know you more. I commit the members of my body to you as a living sacrifice and I know that you receive them as a Holy act of worship. It’s not hard to nurture my relationship with you because I realize how much you have already sacrificed to meet me where I am. I know I need the Word of God and I need to know you through the communion of prayer. I will build up my spouse (special person) by being built up in you and I will pour into their life what you are pouring into mine. I understand the gift of my sexuality and the context for which it’s to be shared. I am in submission to your perfect will for my life and I know that you have excitement, liberty and joy planned for my marriage bed.
