Always ready for battle – community activism is second nature By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
If there is an issue of importance to the community, John Evans is always on the right side of it. When he dons his blue denim overalls and red shirt – channeling the late Hosea Williams – and grabs his megaphone, the fainthearted knows it’s time to look out. For decades Evans has been South DeKalb’s activist extraordinaire, opposing infringements on civil rights and liberties and fighting for young people’s education. He says he is just serving the community. “If it’s genuine. If it’s a people issue, I have to be involved,” said Evans, who turned 77 years old on Jan. 29. His passion, dedication and steadfastness are among the many reasons that Evans was voted “Best Local Activist” in the 2010 CrossRoadsNews Best of East Metro Readers Choice Award. Evans, a former DeKalb NAACP president and the county’s first black elected county commissioner in 1982, regularly attends DeKalb School Board meetings to keep board members’ feet to the fire and to prod them to do the right thing. In January 2005, when his term ended at the NAACP, Evans founded Operation LEAD (Leaders to End All Discrimination), a legal, civil and human rights to continue his activism. At community meetings, he asks the tough questions and last year fought with the Grady Hospital Board to ensure that health care for the poor stayed on its radar. Last year, as the nation and Congress wrestled over President Barack Obama’s health plan, Evans draped a sandwich board sign around his neck and took the streets to

counter health reform opponents. But his activism knows no geographic boundaries. If there is something worth fighting at the Clayton County school board, Evans is there. If there is police brutality Muscogee County, Evans is among the
marchers. When thousands marched in 2007 to free Genarlow Wilson, who was imprisoned for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, Evans was prominent among the throngs. Josie Dean, a fellow activist, calls him a
fighter. “He has been on the battlefield,” she said. “Sometimes he don’t have gas for his car, but when nobody else is there, he is there. He just takes on these fights. When he sees injustice, he takes it on.” Continued, next page

New entrepreneur finds lots of success at healthy and fitness business By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Nineteen months ago, LaTasha Lewis was a registered nurse at DeKalb Medical at Hillandale offering a six-week 5 a.m. class to her colleagues – doctors, nurses and others – who wanted a healthier lifestyle. Her rigorous strength building and toning exercises and healthy eating nutritional plan helped the women and men drop up to 32 pounds over the six weeks. Word spread and soon she had 110 people asking for classes on difLaTasha Lewis ferent hours and days. In March 2009, she moved Tadda’s Fitness Camp – named for the nickname her parents gave her as a child – to a 4,000-square-foot studio down the road from the hospital in Lithonia. This weekend Lewis, who quit her nursing job at DeKalb Medical last July, will host an awards ceremony for a class of 192 people. “It’s been an amazing year-and-a-half,” she said. “I never dreamed that I would be running a fitness business. I truly believe it’s the work of the Lord.” Lewis’ success at her business prompted her clients to nominate her for the Best Local Entreprenuer in the 2010 CrossRoadsNews Best of East Metro Readers Choice Awards. She tied with Chick-fil-A operator Tony Royal for the award. “I don’t take this honor lightly,” she said. “I am humbled to be nominated and to win.” Lewis said she was able to grow her business by listening to her clients. When they said it would be great to shower after 5 a.m. class and go to work, she installed nice showers for them. When they

yearned for child care, she added it, so moms can work out, confident that their kids are in good care. But Lewis said the best thing for her is seeing people get healthy again and broken families mend. “It’s not only the physical transforma-
tion,” she said. “It’s also spiritual and emotional.” She tells the story of a couple who were drifting away from each but have found new camaraderie by participating together in her fitness camp. “Now they are exercising together and
cooking and eating together,” she said. Lewis that even teenage boys have followed their parents to the class. “They wanted to know what was making their mother so happy,” she said. “The next class, the mother, father and their 15- and 16-year-old sons signed up.”

Saint Philip AME’s humble pastor of 40 years voted Citizen of the Year By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Even though Pastor George Moore heads a mega church in South DeKalb County, its never been about him. You won’t find on television and he is not jetting around the world in a private jet. Instead, the man Saint Philip AME Church members call servant leader, visionary, humble, compassionate, and dynamic, often deflect the attention away from himself. But this time, CrossRoadsNews readers and his church flock got him. In landslide balloting in the 2010 CrossRoadsNews Best of East Metro Readers Choice Award, they voted him “Citizen of the Year.” Moore, the contest’s favorite, got the most votes of all the nominees and in his category, he garnered four times the votes of the other six nominees together. He will pick up his award from the Main Stage in front of Macy’s at the 2010 Best of East Metro/Small Business Expo on April 24 at the Mall at Stonecrest. Moore, who has been in ministry for 54 years, spent the last 40 years at Saint Philip AME Church shepherding its growth from 180 members to more than 8,000 today. On Oct. 22, he will turn 75 years old, mandatory retirement age for the AME Church. During his tenure at the church, he led his congregation of 3,900 families to corral one corner of Candler Road and Memorial Drive and build a $8 million sanctuary and $12 million family life center. The growth of Saint Philip AME is the crowning achievement of Moore’s five decades of ministry. Among the 525 AME churches in Georgia, only one other – comes from helping people bring their lives Turner Chapel in Marietta – has equaled together. Saint Philip’s numerous ministries that growth. reaches outside the walls of the church. Its For Moore, the joy of being pastor
