Democrats criticized the maps, Howard Mosby saying they purge white Democratic representatives and isolate and diminish minority voting strength. “This was a highly political process,” Mosby said. “I think the Republicans were attempting to get a constitutional majority

Caravans to King Memorial Postponed By Jennifer Ffrench Parker
Shando Bethel was 7 years old when the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. She still gets emotional talking about the death of the civil rights leader. “I was very small, but I knew something big had happened,” she said. “I remember my grandmother and great-grandmother crying. To this day, I re- Shando Bethel member my grandmother saying, ‘Oh Lord, what we going to do now.’” Bethel was set to board one of the dozens of buses headed to Washington for Sunday’s dedication of the King Memorial on the National Mall, but late Thursday, Hurricane Irene’s advance toward the East Coast caused organizers to postpone the event to an undetermined date in either September or October. Bethel, now 50, said it would be her first trip to the nation’s capital and that going there to honor King was an opportunity she didn’t want to miss. “This is so important,” she said Wednesday. “To people like myself, to see this come true is phenomenal.” Bethel said she was very excited about the trip. “I have already started packing,” she said. “I’m just like a little 5-year-old getting ready to go on a ride.” The 30-foot King Memorial opened to the public on Aug. 24 with a star-studded cast of celebrities including Aretha Franklin, Bebe Winans, Jennifer Hudson, Al Green, India Arie, Idan Raichel, and Jamie Foxx performing at a variety of events. National Memorial Project Foundation’s president and CEO, Harry Johnson Sr., said Thursday that the last planned event for the weekend would be a national prayer service on Saturday. The monument, which has been described by some spectators as “pinkish” in hue, was to have been dedicated in a West Potomac Park ceremony at 11 a.m. on Aug. 28, the 48th anniversary of the March on

Michael Woodward, the LEAD Foundation’s director and organizer of the trip, could not be reached Thursday night. Earlier in the week, he said about 20 kids would be on the trip. Woodward, who is also Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Georgia district fund-raising chair for the MLK Memorial, said it’s important to take kids to the dedication. “Our mission of developing tomorrow’s leaders today aligns with teachings of Dr. King,” he said. “It is a significant day to be

DeKalb NAACP President John Evans, who was to lead a bus trip on Saturday to the dedication ceremony, said he would call the foundation on Friday to make sure the postponement was real. If it was, Evans said he understands that the Lord is in charge. “I’m clear about that,” Evans said. “I don’t have any debate about that.” Whenever the dedication happens, Evans Please see MEMORIAL, page 3
