WELCOME Dear Colleagues, It is always a joy to welcome you to a new academic catalog. We hope that within these pages you will find gospel-centered resources to help your ministry within an academic context as we seek to bear witness together to the Lordship of Christ in all of life. If there are themes to this year’s publishing in particular, perhaps we could identify them as systematic theology and historical retrieval. In systematics, we have the publication of: • Robert Letham’s magnum opus (p. 2) • Two new entries by Graham Cole and Thomas McCall in the multidecade series Foundations of Evangelical Theology (p. 6) • Graham Cole’s prolegomena volume launching a new series, Short Studies in Systematic Theology (p. 10) In historical application, we are featuring: • Gavin Ortlund’s volume on how evangelicals can practice theological retrieval (p. 4) • Kevin DeYoung’s book on how the Canons of Dort can serve the church today (p. 24) And as Scripture is foundational to all that we do, I would be remiss not to highlight the publication of: • Dirk Jongkind’s An Introduction to the Greek New Testament, Produced at Tyndale House, Cambridge (p. 12) • The ESV Bible with Creeds and Confessions (p. 18) Of course there are many more new releases to look at. You can find them organized by theology, history and culture, and biblical studies—followed by

THEOLOGICAL RETRIEVAL FOR EVANGELICALS

978-1-4335-6526-7, $21.99

Why We Need Our Past to Have a Future Evangelicalism is not commonly known for mining the rich theological heritage handed down from previous generations. But lately there has been a restlessness among evangelicals— an aching for theological rootedness that has led some to abandon Protestantism altogether. This book aims to

a Protestant identity—and highlight how it can be done through real case studies. By addressing two key doctrines— the doctrines of God and the atonement—and drawing from neglected theologians—Boethius, Gregory the Great, and John of Damascus—this book charts a course for evangelicals eager to draw from the past to meet the challenges of the present. REDEMPTIVE REVERSALS AND THE IRONIC OVERTURNING OF HUMAN WISDOM The Bible is full of ironic situations in which God overturns the world’s wisdom by doing the opposite of what is expected. In this new volume from respected New Testament scholar G. K. Beale, readers will see how God’s pattern of divine irony is exhibited in both judgment and salvation, finding its greatest expression in Jesus’s triumph over death through death on a cross. God has designed redemptive history to unfold in a way that challenges human wisdom in order to put his own wisdom and glory on display, using what is seemingly weak and foolish to show his power in the lives of his people today. FAITHFUL THEOLOGY An Introduction The first volume in the new Short Studies in Systematic Theology series explores what it means to do theology, why theology matters, and what it looks like to derive doctrine from God’s word—helping us understand what to believe, what to value, and how to live. Each chapter looks at 1 of 5 crucial components for constructing good theology: revelation from God, tradition from the past, worship, wisdom, and experience of brokenness, with case studies illustrating how doctrine is developed from each of these important sources. Readers will be left with a deeper understanding of how to make sure their theology faithfully reflects the truth of God’s word. GRAHAM A. COLE (ThD, Australian College of Theology) is the dean and professor of biblical and systematic theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. An ordained Anglican minister, he has served in two parishes and was formerly the principal of Ridley College.

Then the angel1 showed me x the river of y the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of z the street of the city; a also, on either side of the river, b the tree of life2 with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were c for the healing of the nations. 3 d No longer will there be anything accursed, but e the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and f his servants will worship him. 4 g They will see his face, and h his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And i night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp j or sun, for k the Lord God will be their light, and l they will reign forever and ever. Jesus Is Coming 6 And he said to me, m “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of n the spirits of the prophets, o has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.” 7 “And behold, p I am coming soon. q Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” 8 I, r John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, s I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 s but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those m who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” 10 And he said to me, t “Do not seal up the

I am j the root and k the descendant of David, l the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and m the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And n let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the o water of life without price. 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: p if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in q the tree of life and in r the holy city, which are described in this book. 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely s I am coming soon.” Amen. t Come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.4 Amen. 24r Isa. 60:3; [ch. 22:2] s ver. 26; [Isa. 60:5, 16] 25t Isa. 60:11 u See ver. 23 27v [ch. 22:14, 15; Isa. 35:8; 52:1; Ezek. 44:9; Joel 3:17; Zech. 14:21] w See ch. 3:5 Chapter 22 1x Ezek. 47:1; Zech. 14:8; [Ps. 46:4] y See ch. 21:6 2z ch. 21:21 a Ezek. 47:12 b ver. 14, 19; ch. 2:7; Gen. 2:9 c [ch. 21:24] 3d Zech. 14:11; [Gen. 3:17] e ch. 21:3, 23; Ezek. 48:35 f ch. 7:15 4g Matt. 5:8; 1 Cor. 13:12; 1 John 3:2 h ch. 3:12; 7:3; 14:1 5i ch. 21:25 j See ch. 21:23 k Ps. 36:9; See ch. 21:11 l Dan. 7:18, 27; Rom. 5:17; 2 Tim. 2:12; See ch. 20:4 6m See ch. 21:5 n 1 Cor. 14:32 o ch. 1:1 7p ver. 12, 20; ch. 3:11 q ch. 1:3 8r ch. 1:1, 4, 9 s ch. 19:10 9s [See ver. 8 above] m [See ver. 6 above] 10t [ch. 10:4] 11u Ezek. 3:27; [Dan. 12:10; 2 Tim. 3:13] 12v ver. 7, 20 w Isa. 40:10; 62:11 x See Matt. 16:27 13y See ch. 1:8 z See ch. 1:17 a ch. 21:6 14b See ch. 7:14 c ver. 2, 19 d Ps. 118:20; See ch. 21:27 15e [Gal. 5:19-21]; See Matt. 8:12 f See Phil. 3:2 g See ch. 21:8 16h ch. 1:1 i ch. 1:4 j See ch. 5:5 k See Matt. 1:1 l [ch. 2:28; Num. 24:17; Isa. 60:3; Matt. 2:2] 17m ch. 21:2, 9 n ch. 21:6; Isa. 55:1; John 7:37 o See ch. 21:6 18p Deut. 4:2; 12:32; [Prov. 30:6] 19q ver. 2, 14 r See ch. 21:2 20s ver. 7, 12 t [2 Tim. 4:8]

Then I saw y a new heaven and a new earth, for z the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw a the holy city, b new Jerusalem, c coming down out of heaven from God, d prepared e as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, f the dwelling place1 of God is with man. He will g dwell with them, and they will be his people,2 and God himself will be with them as their God.3 4 h He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and i death shall be no more, j neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5 And k he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I l am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for m these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, n “It is done! o I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. p To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 q The one who conquers will have this heritage, and r I will be his God and s he will be my son. 8 t But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, u their portion will be in v the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is w the second death.”

And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.4 Its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits5 by j human measurement, which is also k an angel’s measurement. 18 The wall was built of l jasper, while the city was pure gold, like l clear glass. 19 m The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and n the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. 22 And o I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city p has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for q the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By

BIBLICAL SPIRITUALIT Y What is spirituality? For some, it means nothing more than vague self-improvement pulled from the latest best-selling self-help book. For others, it refers to some generic religious practice. Shedding life-giving light on what often remains illdefined and unclear, this book sets forth a vision of biblical spirituality—“a renewed sense of the momentousness of being alive in God’s world as God’s people are led by God’s Spirit through God’s word unto godly, Christlike character.” With careful exegetical work and theological reflection, the contributors—pastors and scholars such as Christopher W. Morgan, Paul R. House, Nathan A. Finn, and Gregg R. Allison— address spirituality from the perspective of the Bible, exploring topics such as the Trinity, divine sovereignty and human responsibility, the “already” and “not yet,” and the church. This book also addresses practical questions about spirituality related to the workplace, disciplines of the body, and more. ENDORSEMENTS “This volume does a superb job of grounding spirituality in the full range of biblical teaching. GRACE DEFINED AND DEFENDED What a 400-Year-Old Confession Teaches Us about Sin, Salvation, and the Sovereignty of God Christians love to talk about grace, but often use vague generalities. But such an important biblical concept ought to be clearly defined so it can be consistently defended. In this book, pastor, professor, and best-selling author Kevin DeYoung points modern readers back to an old document written to be precise about doctrinal truth. This book introduces readers to the context and theology of the Canons of Dort, a 17th-century work summarizing the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Widely regarded as a key pillar of the Reformed tradition, the Canons of Dort stand as a faithful witness to God’s grace— offering a depth of understanding that the church still needs today. In three concise sections that examine the specific articles and nuances of the Canons of Dort, DeYoung explores what led to the Canons and why they were needed, the five important doctrines that they explain, and Dort’s place in the Reformed tradition today.

POST- CHRISTIAN A Guide to Contemporary Thought and Culture We live in a post-Christian world. Contemporary thought— claiming to be “progressive” and “liberating”—seeks to undermine biblical Christianity, but in fact undermines culture itself by assaulting family, community, authority, and nature. Today’s Christians need to understand the underlying worldviews of the post-Christian culture in order to navigate

these new challenges in their world. This insightful book, written as a follow-up to the author’s book Postmodern Times, charts the course of how postmodernism led to our postChristian times, engaging with philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and J. G. Hamann. It goes on to explore how Christians can combat today’s constructivism, relativism, and Gnosticism; and offers alternatives to those problems as a way to recover reality, rebuild culture, and revive faith. LIVING FOR GOD A Short Introduction to the Christian Faith What difference should doctrine make on our day-to-day living? This book summarizes Christianity in 5 core truths—the Trinity, the Son of God, the Spirit, the church, and heaven and hell—to show how theology is intended to bring people closer to God. Drawing from writers throughout church history—particularly St. Augustine, Richard Baxter, and C. S. Lewis—as well as historical creeds that set forth pillars of the Chrisitan faith, this book summarizes the principal doctrines that define Christianity at its very foundation, and how they shape minds, hearts, and actions, so readers can know simply and concisely what it means to live for God. MARK JONES serves as the pastor of Faith Vancouver Presbyterian Church (PCA) in British Columbia, Canada, and a research associate at the University of the Free State in South Africa. He has authored several books, including God Is and The Prayers of Jesus, and speaks all over the world on Christology and the Christian life. 5.25" x 8", Trade Paperback, 256 pages 978-1-4335-6625-7, $19.99 Available February 11, 2020

CONFRONTING CHRISTIANIT Y 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion Although many people suggest that Christianity is declining, research indicates that it continues to be the world’s most popular worldview. But even so, the Christian faith includes many controversial beliefs that non-Christians find hard to accept. This book explores 12 issues that might cause someone to dismiss orthodox Christianity—issues such as

the existence of suffering, the Bible’s teaching on gender and sexuality, the reality of heaven and hell, the authority of the Bible, and more. Showing how the best research from sociology, science, and psychology doesn’t disagree with but actually aligns with claims found in the Bible, these chapters help skeptics understand why these issues are signposts, rather than roadblocks, to faith in Christ. BECOMING C . S. LEWIS A Biography of Young Jack Lewis (1898–1918) The writings of C. S. Lewis cannot be fully understood apart from a grasp of his formative adolescent years. Unfortunately, many biographies speed over this important season of Lewis’s life. Slowing down to focus on his younger years, this detailed portrait of “Jack” Lewis helps us discover seeds of what would inform his later writings—such as his delight in literature, his key relationships, his suffering and struggles, and his intense pursuit of joy. The chapters unfold the habits and tastes he developed while at boarding school, in college, and in the army, revealing where we see these themes appear in his works—bringing to life the man readers have come to know as C. S. Lewis. Includes a family tree and photographs of the places where Lewis lived and studied. Volume 1 in a trilogy offering a comprehensive view of the life of C. S. Lewis. GOD AND GALILEO What a 400-Year-Old Letter Teaches Us about Faith and Science The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, many high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God— rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written by famed astronomer Galileo in 1615, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding Christians that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created. ECONOMICS A Student’s Guide What caused the US housing market to collapse? Why has Europe adopted a single currency and experienced economic decline? What lies behind the very strong economic performance of emerging market economies? A thoughtful response to these kinds of questions requires an understanding of key concepts in economics. In this accessible resource, an economics professor draws on the Christian tradition to help readers understand and evaluate capitalism, the free market, welfare, the gap between rich and poor, and more. Exploring economic principles outlined in the Old and New Testaments, the thought of church fathers such as Augustine, and the technological and financial innovations of the Middle Ages and Industrial Revolution, this book will help readers apply Christian values to their thinking about economic theory and public policy. LEVITICUS Holy God, Holy People It is the message that God spoke to his people through Moses as they prepared to depart for the Promised Land. It details regulations for holy living and sacrificial worship in Old Testament Israel. But does Leviticus have anything to say to Christians today? Knowing that readers of the Bible often get hung up on the seeming irrelevance of Leviticus, Kenneth A. Mathews counters with this insightful Preaching the Word commentary. His chapter-by-chapter analysis reveals much about not only the demands of a holy God but about the kind of relationship he wants with his people and his standards for worship in any age. As Mathews illuminates the significance of Israel’s sacrificial system and symbols, he draws parallel after parallel to Jesus as their perfect fulfillment. His commentary will train pastors, teachers, and serious readers in how Leviticus foreshadows the saving work of Jesus, and the many ways God made accommodation for human sin through Christ. Theology for Life—Believing the gospel carries assurance because it turns us away from ourselves to the Son of God, who rescues the lost. John 3:16 is a truth worth knowing by heart.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and b baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed c again for Galilee. 4 d And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field e that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, f wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.2 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, f “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (g For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you h living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 i Are you greater than our father Jacob? j He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to

BIBLE & REFERENCE

God shows his love for a world (v. 16) that hates him (7:7; 15:18) by sending his only Son from heaven to live a sinless life, die for sinners, and rise from the dead. The Father did not send his Son to condemn but to rescue (3:17), and he brings judgment only because of sinful opposition. Startlingly, the Son’s coming has illuminated the verdicts of the last day, so that people need not wait for the last judgment to learn their eternal destinies. Their destinies are apparent now, in light of their relationship to Christ— sobering news for his rejecters, who are “condemned already” (v. 18). God wants them to turn to Christ that they might know a change of verdict. However, all who rely upon him alone for salvation are assured now that they will not be condemned by God on the last day (v. 18).

ESV ARCHAEOLOGY STUDY BIBLE The ESV Archaeology Study Bible roots the biblical text in its historical and cultural context, offering readers a framework for better understanding the people, places, and events recorded in Scripture. With editorial oversight from Dr. John Currid (PhD, University of Chicago) and Dr. David Chapman (PhD, University of Cambridge), as well as contributions from a team of field-trained archaeologists, the ESV Archaeology Study Bible assembles a range of modern scholarship— pairing the biblical text with helpful articles, maps, photographs, and drawings. Additional charts, sidebars, and notes add detail and bring life to the ancient texts, helping readers situate them in their historical context while recognizing the truth that the eternal God became flesh and entered human history at a specific time and in a specific place.

Here the wind was against them, apparently from the east, greatly hindering the disciples’ headway. The most severe storms on the sea can raise waves up to 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 m) in height, more than enough to swamp the type of vessel in which the disciples were sailing. See “The Galilee Boat” on p. 1975 and “Weather on the Sea of Galilee” on p. 1977.

TYrE aND SIDON Tyre and Sidon were two ancient urban centers on the Phoenician coast. For millennia, each served as a strategic port connecting the lands of the ancient Near East with the Mediterranean. When independent, Tyre and Sidon were able to control vast economic trade networks. More often, they were under the political and economic control of distant powers such as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, or Rome. Israel had a mixed relationship with the Phoenician cities. Hiram king of Tyre supplied materials to build the temple in Jerusalem (1 Kings 5:1–12), and Jezebel was a Sidonian princess. The prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel condemned Tyre for its extravagance but in the process provided great detail concerning its seafaring techniques and successful economic network (Isaiah 23; Ezekiel 27). Alexander the Great famously besieged the island port city of Tyre (just off the coast of the mainland), brutally conquering her after constructing a land bridge to the island, which remains to this day. Tyre later recovered in

the Seleucid period, and Herod the Great even gave funds to build a temple and marketplace there. Tyre and Sidon were annexed to the Roman province of Syria in 64 BC. As was typical of urban areas, the cities served as gateways for the Greco-Roman way of life. Such cities tended to have standard architectural features, including theaters, Roman temples, gymnasia, and a street grid laid out at right angles, with a broad main street (called the cardo maximus). Their population was predominantly Gentile, although like most cities of the Roman Empire they also had a significant Jewish population. Jews in Tyre and Sidon had to come to terms with the dominant culture of the region and were susceptible to blending Judaism with Hellenism. Tyre also produced the only coins accepted for the Jewish temple tax. See “The Temple Tax” on p. 1850.

12–20 feet (3.7–6.1 m) wide at the base, narrowing to a width of 4–8 feet (1.2–2.4 m) above the surface of the water. The breakwater typically formed a semicircle in the lake, with a narrow opening close to the shore to allow boats out and in. Stone boat anchors as well as mooring stones positioned on the shore are often found in the vicinity of these harbors. Jesus and the disciples moored at the site of Gennesaret (Tel Kinrot, OT Chinneroth) on the northern end of the plain of Gennesaret west of Capernaum, a place where Jesus would have been instantly recognized.

THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT PRO DU CE D AT T YNDALE H O U S E , CAMB RID GE The Greek New Testament is priceless in its value as it is how God has given us his revelation of the gospel and of Jesus Christ. While a few trusted Greek texts are in print, significant advances have been made in Greek translation studies of the New Testament since a standard text was adopted by academics in 1975. The Greek New Testament, Produced at Tyndale House, Cambridge has been created under the oversight of editors Dr. Dirk Jongkind (St. Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge) and Dr. Peter Williams (Tyndale House, Cambridge). Together with their team, they have taken a rigorously philological approach to reevaluating the standard text—reexamining spelling and paragraph decisions as well as allowing more recent discoveries related to scribal habits to inform editorial decisions. Ideal for students, scholars, and pastors alike, The Greek New Testament, Produced at Tyndale House, Cambridge is a groundbreaking contribution to biblical scholarship.

DAS EVANGELIUM NACH JOHANNES

JOHN

Das Wort ward Fleisch Im Anfang war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott, und Gott war das Wort.

The Word Became Flesh In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,1 and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ¶ 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. ¶ 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
