Is Satan Real?

If you have asked Jesus Christ to forgive you for all your sins, the Bible says that God “has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).

Satan and his demons have no more claim on you because you have been delivered forever from Satan’s kingdom of darkness and brought into Jesus’ kingdom of light.

Which means that Jesus is also your only hope against this terrible enemy. And if you are already a follower of Christ, live continually in light of the final defeat of Satan and the demons on the coming day of judgment (Revelation 20).

So, here are some truths regarding Satan that we dare not ignore: •S atan and the demons are your foes and are not in any way your friends (1 Peter 5:8).

•S atan and the demons are actively at war against you (Ephesians 6:10-13).

•S atan wants to bring death to everything in your life, including your love, joy, marriage, and especially your soul (1 Peter. 5:8).

May Romans 16:20 be true for you: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” God’s grace—undeserved kindness—is our only hope!

consequences of our sins. “At the right time Christ died for the ungodly…God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us….For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 5:6,8; 6:23). To all who receive Christ as their Savior, God gives “the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

AN ENEMY WITH MANY ALIASES

spirit-beings called angels and demons.

Angels were created by God to serve him. However, one angel (originally named Lucifer and now known as Satan) decided to be his own god rather than worship and obey the real God. He defiantly announced, “Above the stars of God I will set my throne on high....I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13-14).

Like a criminal who uses many aliases, this enemy has names such as Satan, the Dragon, the Serpent, the Enemy, the Devil, the Tempter, the Murderer, the Father of Lies, the Adversary, the Accuser, the Destroyer, and the Evil One. These names give us helpful understanding of our enemy’s characteristics, goals, and schemes.

One-third of the angels sided with Satan to declare war on God, but they lost and were kicked out of heaven. Now they can never be brought back into right relationship with God. “God did not spare angels when they sinned, but...committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment” (2 Peter 2:4).

As the Dragon, Satan is crafty and will use various schemes against you to lure you into hell forever if you don’t know Jesus as your Savior. If you are a follower of Christ he will work to lure you into becoming unfaithful to God. But we will not be “outwitted by Satan” (2 Corinthians 2:11) if we heed God’s warnings in Holy Scripture.

Satan and demons are not equal to God. They are created beings and thus have finite limits. Unlike God, they are not all-present, all-knowing, or allpowerful. But they are real and powerful. They have been observing human behavior since the beginning of human history and have continually perfected their tactics on how to destroy us. As the Bible puts it, “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Satan will try his hardest to deceive you because he is a liar by nature. Your life will be destroyed if you trust the person Jesus calls “the father of lies” (John 8:44). The only way to avoid being duped by him is to read the Bible and listen to Jesus. Whom do you trust and obey? The One who is “the truth” (John 14:6) or history’s most notorious liar?

Satan, the Tempter, will come to you when you are weak and will try to entice you to sin (1 Thessa-

lonians 3:5). His goal is to draw you near to him and away from Jesus, God’s Son, who came to earth to enable us to become children of God. The response of God’s children to sinful temptation must be, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). God provides his own their only hope of protection and gives victory over their greatest spiritual enemy. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8a).

Satan is also an accuser. He brings serious charges against everyone, even those who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior (Revelation 12:10). But if you genuinely know Christ, the enemy’s slanders will have no effect on your standing with God. “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised [back to life]—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” (Romans 8:34).

OUR ONLY HOPE Have you ever come to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and new life? Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to suffer the consequences—the judgment— of our sins.
