A 75th Anniversary Letter from Crossway’s President Dear friends of Crossway, On this our 75th anniversary, I want to express my great appreciation to each of you for your friendship and partnership in the Crossway publishing ministry. But we especially want to give honor and glory to the Lord for all that he has accomplished over these last 75 years—through the publication of tens of millions of books, with 800 titles by 350 authors currently in print; through the global distribution of over 2 billion pieces of Christian literature; and through the 80 million-plus ESV Bibles distributed since 2001 via print and digital media. All of this has happened only through the gracious provision of the Lord—specifically through his provision of outstanding author and distribution partnerships with bookstores, retailers, online distributers, churches, and ministries around the globe. We are deeply grateful to each of you. The whole purpose of Crossway’s publishing program is summarized in our three-word purpose statement: “Gospel-Centered Publishing.” This is especially exemplified by the books being released in this 75th anniversary year—including new titles by John Piper, Max Lucado, Mark Dever, John MacArthur, Elyse Fitzpatrick, Paul Tripp, R. C. Sproul, J. I. Packer, Kent Hughes, Wayne Grudem, Matt Chandler, Voddie Baucham, Carolyn Mahaney, D. A. Carson, and Kevin DeYoung, to mention just a few. Thank you for looking through the following pages of this catalog, with the wealth of extraordinary books and authors that Crossway has been given the privilege to publish. Especially in this 75th anniversary year, we want to reaffirm the foundational principles that Crossway has always been committed to—the timeless truth of God’s Word; the application of the Bible to all of life; and our desire to honor the Lord and give him the glory in all we do. With our great appreciation for the opportunity to work with you—in the greatest calling and mission that we could ever ask or think, Your friend,

Paul E. Miller

A Loving Life In a World of Broken Relationships Having successfully helped readers develop a solid prayer life with the best-selling release of A Praying Life, author Paul Miller applies his expertise to an even more important issue—love. After all, love is what holds all things together, it’s what we’re looking for, it’s what we all need, and it’s what we must learn how to give. But loving people is hard. Our neighbors, friends, kids, spouses, and even our enemies require a relentless, self-giving demonstration of love that only God can produce within us. Taking his cues from the perseverance and faithfulness portrayed in the book of Ruth, Miller sheds light on a biblical portrait of love that is sure to give us hope and transform our souls. Here is the help we need to embrace relationship, endure rejection, cultivate community, and reach out to even the most unlovable as we discover the power to live a loving life. Dis t in c t ives

• From the author of A Praying Life, which has sold extremely well • Answers questions such as: What is love? Why do we shy away from it sometimes? How do we love others who don’t love us well in return? • Speaks to the universal longing and search for love, calling readers to a countercultural view of commitment • Corrects distortions of love that often leave us disappointed, discouraged, and dissatisfied, and offers principles for love that lasts • Uses the book of Ruth to deconstruct our modern views of love and replace them with a thoroughly biblical one rooted in the gospel • Explores key themes including love, gospel, community, lament, prayer, femininity, and masculinity

David F. Wells

God in the Whirlwind How the Holy-love of God Reorients Our World Building on years of research and teaching, experienced author and theologian David Wells offers a remedy for evangelicalism’s superficial theology and weightless conception of God: a journey to discover the paradoxical nature of his holiness and love. We all struggle, at times, to hold that paradox together, commonly resulting in problems such as liberalism or legalism. Yet understanding how God’s holiness is inextricably bound to his love is what enables us to live between the two extremes and defines our life of service in this world. In the vein of classics such as Packer’s Knowing God, Wells’s biblical theology is written at an accessible level so that all readers can cultivate a balanced vision of the God who belongs in the center of it all. Dis t in c t ives

• Author’s previous books—No Place for Truth, God in the Wasteland, Losing Our Virtue, Above All Earthly Pow’rs, and The Courage to be Protestant—are widely known and discussed • Emphasizes the importance of integrating God’s love and holiness into our view of God’s character • Examines and offers positive solutions to two problems facing the modern church: the pressure to conform to cultural norms and the dangers of living in an age of constant distraction

God in the Whirlwind 6 x 9, Hardcover w/Jacket, 256 pages 978-1-4335-3131-6, $24.99 BISAC: RELIGION / Christian Theology / General (REL067000)

Jared C. Wilson

The Storytelling God Seeing the Glory of Jesus in His Parables The prodigal son. The good Samaritan. A treasure hidden in a field. Most of us have heard these parables before. Yet if these oft-repeated stories strike us as merely sweet, heartwarming, or sentimental, we can be sure we’ve misread them. Jesus’s parables are simultaneously working to conceal and to reveal profound spiritual truths about God, humanity, the world, and the future—and we must learn to plumb their depths. A careful reading of the biblical text reveals the surprising ways in which such seemingly simple stories rebuke, subvert, and sabotage our sinful habits, perspectives, and priorities. Discarding the notion that Jesus’s parables are nothing more than moralistic fables, Jared Wilson shows how each one is designed to drive us to Jesus in awe, need, faith, and worship.

John Piper

Filling up the Afflictions of Christ The Cost of Bringing the Gospel to the Nations in the Lives of William Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton [Paperback Edition] Jesus’s words in John 12 are sobering: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it will bear little fruit. Throughout history, God’s strategy for reaching unreached peoples with the gospel has often included the suffering of his frontline heralds—the missionaries who made countless sacrifices to advance the kingdom of God. In the fifth volume of the popular The Swans Are Not Silent series, John Piper focuses on this flesh-and-blood reality of pain in the lives of William Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton. Paying dearly to translate the Word of God, mobilize missionaries around the world, and lead the hostile to Christ, their stories illustrate how God builds his kingdom through the suffering of his servants. Now available in paperback.

David Mathis and Jonathan Parnell

How to Stay Christian in Seminary Seminary is dangerous. Really dangerous. The hard truth is that many seminarians enter pastoral ministry feeling drained, disillusioned, and dissatisfied. But the problem isn’t with the faculty or the material. Rather, the most perilous danger to the soul of the pastor-in-training is the sin residing deep within his own heart. Drawing on their years of pastoral ministry and seminary experience, David Mathis and Jonathan Parnell take a refreshingly honest look at this oft-neglected—yet all too common—experience, offering real-world advice for students eager to survive seminary with their faith intact. In seven short but challenging chapters, the authors remind readers of the foundational role of the gospel in the life of ministry, equipping them with the keys to grow in their faith while making the most of their education. Dis t in c t ives

Joy for the World How Christianity Lost Its Cultural Influence and Can Begin Rebuilding It Many of us recognize the declining influence of the church today. And while we may be interested in doing something to reverse the trend, few of us realize we are part of the problem. Greg Forster comes to our aid by first laying out the historical factors that have contributed to the church’s loss of influence in our society today. He then explores the significance of foundational practices such as preaching, worship, and discipleship—showing how the Holy Spirit uses them to produce joy in us that changes our churches, families, offices, and communities. Dis t in c t ives :

• Best-selling author Tim Keller writes the foreword and serves as series editor, alongside the Gospel Coalition’s editorial director, Collin Hansen • Answers the question: How can the church begin the process of rebuilding its influence? • Offers practical steps for infusing joy into the three major aspects of social life: family, work, and community • Divided into three distinct parts: the history of the church’s lack of influence; the importance of doctrine, worship, and stewardship; the practical impact on sex, family, work, and the community

Greg Forster (PhD, Yale University) is a program director at the Kern Family Foundation and a senior fellow at the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. Forster is the author of numerous articles and six books, including The Joy of Calvinism.

James M. Hamilton Jr.

What Is Biblical Theology? A Guide to the Bible’s Story, Symbolism, and Patterns Is the Bible just a random collection of old stories, or is there something more going on within the pages of Scripture? Is it possible that the ancient books of the Old and New Testaments are part of a single, unified story, begun long ago but extending into our world today? In this introduction to biblical theology, professor James Hamilton orients Bible readers afresh to the overarching story line of Scripture, helping Christians read and interpret the Bible as the biblical writers intended and as the early Christians read it. Examining Scripture’s key symbols, patterns, and themes, Hamilton helps readers truly grasp—and be transformed by—the theology of redemption contained in God’s Word. Dis t in c t ives
