D. A. CARSON AND TIMOTHY KELLER, EDS.

The Gospel as Center Renewing Our Faith and Reforming Our Ministry Practices Series: The Gospel Coalition Timely and valuable core teachings from an evangelical movement dedicated to the gospel of Christ and a Scripturebased reformation of ministry practices. Up until a generation ago, most adults had similar moral intuitions whether they were believers or not, and the core of protestant orthodoxy was still intact. Yet, in the wake of postmodernism and secularism, all that has changed. Convinced that gospel-centered ministry is utterly imperative for such a time as this, contributors D. A. Carson, Tim Keller, Kevin DeYoung, Philip Ryken, Bryan Chapell, Thabiti Anyabwile, Richard Phillips, Sam Storms, and others defend the gospel and traditional doctrines. To showcase the center of confessional evangelicalism, this volume presents the 14 booklets in the Gospel Coalition Booklet series. In addition, this volume includes a preface, the Gospel Coalition’s foundational documents, and indexes. The editors and contributors represent a wide range of denominations and are united not only by belief in the biblical gospel, but also by the conviction that ministry today must be increasingly gospel centered.

D. A. CARSON (PhD, Cambridge University) is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has authored numerous books, including Scandalous and Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor. TIMOTHY KELLER (DMin, Westminster Theological Seminary) is founder and pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York. He is the best-selling author of The Prodigal God and The Reason for God.

HAYLEY DIMARCO AND MICHAEL DIMARCO

Die Young Burying Your Self in Christ Presenting a challenge for believers to die to the bondage of living for self, this best-selling husband and wife team show the rewarding reasons for choosing to live for Christ. In a world that entices people to chase happiness by living a life centered on themselves, Hayley and Michael DiMarco take a stand for the truth. Living for yourself, they say, will destroy you. The only path to real life is through death—a death to self that frees people rescued by Jesus to live with the fearless love and rock-solid hope that he intended. Based on the premise that the gospel turns life upside down, the DiMarcos explain the paradoxes that result: death is the new life; less is the new more; weak is the new strong; slavery is the new freedom. Their relatable, contemporary style packs a solid biblical punch, as they examine what the life and death of Christ means for those who have given their lives to him. This book will give readers a vision to dig deeper and bury themselves in Christ and to find contentment, safety, freedom, and victory in living for him.

The Wisdom of God Seeing Jesus in the Psalms and Wisdom Books Series: Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament The second book in the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series leads readers in a Christ-centered study of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. This 10-week study of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon mines the Wisdom Literature not only for wise principles for living, but also for the wise person these books point to through their drama, poetry, proverb, and song. She presents clear commentary and contemporary application of gospel truths, speaking directly to issues such as repentance, submission, happiness, and sexuality. Many men have the skills to lead a church, but only some are called. Dave Harvey helps men considering pastoral ministry to see God’s active role in the process of discerning their calling. God’s Word offers a clear framework for evaluating one’s call, especially within the context of community. Harvey offers six diagnostic questions to help prospective pastors process their calling, and what they should be doing now if they aren’t sure. Illustrated with personal and historical stories, Harvey explores biblical and practical principles for determining the pastoral call. Over the past twenty-four years of ministry, Harvey has enjoyed assisting many men in discerning whether they are called into ministry. This book will guide you through that all-important process with wisdom and confidence in God’s faithfulness in your life.

PHIL RYKEN

Loving the Way Jesus Loves Seasoned pastor and college president Phil Ryken offers a unique exploration of 1 Corinthians 13, showing how every aspect of this famous chapter is perfectly illustrated in the life of Jesus Christ. Most people are familiar with the “love chapter” of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, yet expositor Phil Ryken has something new to say. Drawing on the earthly life and ministry of Jesus to illustrate Paul’s statements about what love is and isn’t, Ryken brings a christological approach to this commonly quoted passage. These aspects of love are then illuminated chronologically through the story of Christ’s advent, teaching, miracle working, sufferings, crucifixion, death, resurrection, and ascension. This approach highlights the crucial truth that we are able to love only because Christ first loved us in this particularly profound, very real, and transformative manner. Complete with a study guide for each of the 12 chapters, Loving the Way Jesus Loves will benefit Bible study groups as well as individual readers. Given its unique emphasis, biblical soundness, integration of art through photography, and popular-level writing style, Ryken’s book has both wide and strong appeal. His intensely practical treatment of 1 Corinthians 13 is informed by the classic expositions of Jonathan Edwards and C. S. Lewis, yet it explores an angle that no other commentator has. Ultimately, Loving the Way Jesus Loves bears witness to the life-altering truth that love is a person who has first loved us.

LELAND RYKEN

The ESV and the English Bible Legacy Describes the chief characteristics of historic English Bible translation and places the ESV in this classical stream. Modern Bible translations are at a crossroads as multiple philosophies argue that Bible translations ought to be done a certain way. So who’s right? And what has been the historic view of English Bible translators? Leland Ryken, an expert on the literature of the Bible, brings clarity to questions of how modern Bible translations should be viewed in their historical context. He begins by tracing the history of English Bible translation from William Tyndale to the King James Bible, outlining important distinctions. In the view of these historic translators, there is a right way and a wrong way to translate the Bible. Ryken concludes that essentially literal Bible translations best adhere to the legacy of classic English Bible translation. He contends that the English Standard Version is a true heir of this classical stream and concludes with an argument on why the ESV can serve as the translation of choice for Christians in all walks of life. This book is a great resource for Christians who have questions about why we have different Bible translations and how to choose between them.

LELAND RYKEN (PhD, University of Oregon) is professor of English at Wheaton College and has written or edited numerous books, including Understanding English Bible Translation, The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, and The Legacy of the King James Bible. Ryken served as literary stylist for The Holy Bible, English Standard VersionÂŽ.

GENE EDWARD VEITH AND MARY J. MOERBE

Family Vocation God’s Calling in Marriage, Parenting, and Childhood Convinced that the transforming, liberating truths of vocation and calling should have a deep impact on the Christian family, Veith and Moerbe show how these doctrines help to generate healthier and happier families. What does it mean to be called as a husband, a wife, a parent, a child? How does the gospel impact how we fulfill our particular calling? How does God’s presence influence the struggles that families face? Gene Veith joins forces with his daughter Mary Moerbe to explore these kinds of questions as well as the roles of calling and vocation in family life. Though we have little control over who is in our family, God has placed us with specific people for specific reasons. The authors show how our roles are distinct and important to God’s plan for our lives, and how a biblical understanding enables us to move away from common dysfunctions and toward forgiveness and healing. Writing with sensitivity and wisdom, Veith and Moerbe address the common problems facing contemporary families: the crosses, the weaknesses, and the uncertainties. They articulate a compelling paradigm for creating loving and forgiving families who maintain hope in the face of cultural pressure. An important resource for all Christians, including pastors, counselors, and those working in family ministry.

GERALD HIESTAND AND JAY S. THOMAS

Sex, Dating, and Relationships A Fresh Approach Answering prevalent questions like “How far is too far?” the authors articulate a biblical theology of dating and relationships aimed at persuading a new generation of Christians to get serious about honoring Christ with their sexuality. Considering the pervasive immorality and high divorce rate of our contemporary Christian culture, we evidently need a biblically based, theologically compelling, practical understanding of sex, dating, and relationships. Pastors Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas counteract this problem with their paradigm-shifting view of purity and relationships—a view that challenges even the basic assumptions of evangelical subculture. Unlike most books on dating, this one cuts straight to the heart of dating relationships, asserting with confidence that the line must be drawn at “no sexual activity” whatsoever. Few have dared to define and apply the Bible’s understanding of purity in premarital relationships to this degree, but Heistand and Thomas have done it. Furthermore, both authors are vocational pastors who have a proven ability to express biblical truth in a winsome and compelling manner. Sex, Dating, and Relationships adds a new, almost provocative voice to the conversation that, with straightforward theological insight, pleads with Christians to get serious about honoring Christ with their sexuality.

PENELOPE WILCOCK

The Hawk and the Dove Trilogy (Redesign) Series: The Hawk and the Dove A seasoned trilogy, full of captivating tales that reflect the human drama of learning to love and accepting God’s grace, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new look. In honor of nearly twenty years in print, and in the midst of three new volumes in the series, Crossway is rereleasing this classic trilogy, redesigning the cover and retypesetting the interior. Set in a medieval monastery and following the lives of the brothers of St. Alcuin, this threein-one package consists of books 1–3: The Hawk and the Dove, The Wounds of God, and The Long Fall. While the characters belong to another century, their struggles are our own—finding one’s place, coping with failure, living with impossible people, and changing when we realize that we are the impossible ones. Rich with imagery and emotion, their tales depict love in action and love given in the most trying of circumstances. Penelope Wilcock takes a course that far too many Christian fiction writers never dare to take—writing a love story about God and man, and love between brothers in Christ rather than the typical romance between man and woman. A true ministry to the lonely of heart, Wilcock’s captivating tales of monastic life reflects the timeless human struggle of people learning to love God and to receive his grace.

PENELOPE WILCOCK

The Hour before Dawn Series: The Hawk and the Dove A moving story about grief and healing unfolds in an English countryside monastery as the beloved brothers of St. Alcuin discover new depths of God’s grace and restoration. Once again, author Penelope Wilcock reaches back through the centuries to the ancient monastery of St. Alcuin. Abbot John is undergoing deep, emotional shock after learning of the rape of his sister and murder of his mother; Father William is becoming vulnerable for the first time; and there, immersed in the daily routine of simple tasks, the brothers undertake the greatest task of nurturing the grace of God in their souls. Book 5 in the recently continued The Hawk and the Dove series, The Hour before Dawn explores the psychological impact of grief and trauma as well as how one can be healed. Wilcock deftly weaves themes of the resurrection and ascension throughout the story, exploring the process of having survived suffering, but not yet having moved on. Characters eagerly await the coming dawn of restoration. Based on solid historical research, Wilcock’s representation of monastic life is authentic, rich with poetic prose and a sense of time and place. The Hour before Dawn affirms our need for one another’s understanding and love as well as our need for a personal relationship with Jesus. Wilcock’s newest story helps readers understand the grieving process, and make connections between the Bible and everyday life experiences. KENNETH A. MYERS

All God’s Children and Blue Suede Shoes Christians and Popular Culture (Redesign) A classic examination of popular culture that helps Christians live conscientiously “in the world, but not of it.” Every generation of Christians faces unique challenges. The first-century church had Caesar’s lions and the Colosseum. And, while it might seem like an extreme assertion to compare the two, Ken Myers points out that the challenge of living with popular culture may well be as serious as the persecution of the early saints. The erosion of character, the spoiling of innocent pleasures, and the cheapening of life itself are all afflictions of a silent enemy that strikes subtly and unexpectedly. Like a frog stuck in a pot well on it’s way to a boil, we cannot afford to be indifferent about our culture. Neither escaping nor condemning popular culture, Myers works to understand it. Exploring historical origins and biblical teaching on this complex subject, Myers helps us think critically about how popular culture affects our perceptions of reality. This book encourages a culture of transcendence within the church that enables us to engage without conforming to popular culture.

THABITI ANYABWILE

Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons Series: IXMarks An application-intensive approach to seeking out biblically qualified church leaders and servants and developing those qualities in others. Any church leader knows that the qualifications for elders and deacons are articulated in the Bible, but that same leader also knows that actually finding other leaders who fulfill the biblical qualifications is difficult. While many books analyze and debate the finer points of church government, few have been written on both elders and deacons, and fewer still successfully show how to identify and reproduce legitimate leaders and willing servants throughout the ranks of the church body. Thabiti Anyabwile writes from his expertise as a pastor and an elder as well as from his experience of being led by faithful men. Balancing thoughtful analysis of pertinent Bible passages with thorough application for use in a contemporary context, Anyabwile answers the questions, “Who should we look for to lead and serve in the church?” and “What should they do to fulfill their calling?” Rather than exacerbating the controversial questions surrounding these issues, this book provides meaningful action points that will prove effective for a wide range of interpretations.

HEATH LAMBERT

The Biblical Counseling Movement after Adams (Foreword by David Powlison) Ground-breaking exploration of how the biblical counseling movement’s development since Jay Adams is producing practitioners with a more robust approach to counseling. People inside and outside of the biblical counseling movement recognize differences between the foundational work of Jay Adams and that of current leaders such as David Powlison. Yet those differences have been ill-defined and largely anecdotal until now. Heath Lambert shows how biblical counseling remains rooted in a commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture and the need to give practical help to struggling people. He identifies contemporary leaders—including Powlison, Ed Welch, Paul Tripp, and Wayne Mack—who emphasize the sinner as sufferer, the heart as key to motivation, and the need to interact humbly with critics. Demonstrating how these refinements in framework, methodology, and engagement style are characteristic of a second generation of biblical counselors, Lambert contends this new wave of counselors is now increasingly balanced in their counseling methods. With a substantial foreword from David Powlison and strong support from prominent biblical counselors, this book will help all Christians interested in the fundamentally theological task of counseling to think carefully and biblically about how it is taught and practiced. HEATH LAMBERT (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is assistant professor of pastoral theology and coordinator of the department of biblical counseling at Boyce College of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Lambert is also pastor of Biblical Living at Crossing Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and sits on the review board for The Journal of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and the Biblical Counseling Coalition’s council.

GREGORY FORSTER

The Joy of Calvinism Knowing God’s Personal, Unconditional, Irresistible, Unbreakable Love A positive guide to the principles of Calvinism that shows how God’s love and our joy lie at the heart of this often misunderstood theology. The Bible’s command to “rejoice continually” seems impossible and, frankly, unreasonable. Yet despite the apparent difficulty in fulfilling this commandment, Gregory Forster argues that Calvinism holds the key— namely that “real Calvinism is all about joy.” Forster passionately holds to this belief, and systematically demonstrates it by addressing popular misconceptions of what Calvinism is and is not. Dismantling negative expressions of Calvinist theology, Forster positively reiterates its fundamental tenents, showing how God’s love is the driving force behind every facet of Calvin’s doctrine of salvation. Written accessibly, The Joy of Calvinism is an important addition to the conversation surrounding Calvinism and its advocates. Skeptics and those who have had negative perceptions of Calvinism, as well as Calvinists themselves, will find this a helpful resource for clearing up the controversies and grasping the winsomeness of the doctrines of grace.

Keep Your Head Up America’s New Black Christian Leaders, Social Consciousness, and the Cosby Conversation A compilation that explores the chronic afflictions of the black community and continues the “Cosby conversation,” while connecting the hope of the gospel to specific cultural issues. “The black community is in trouble,” writes Anthony Bradley. Systemic issues are perpetuating a chronic plague on not only African-American society, but the black church in particular. Continuing the renowned “Cosby Conversation,” first started in 2007 by Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin Poussaint, Bradley has assembled a team of pastors, scholars, and leaders to address specific issues within the black community. Bradley’s volume features contributions from himself, Vincent Bacote, Ralph C. Watkins, Eric M. Mason, Anthony Carter, Craig Mitchell, and others. Covering a variety of topics, including victim mentality, hip-hop, masculinity, and the prosperity gospel, this book will open readers’ eyes to the serious challenges facing the black church today. It will not leave readers without hope, however, as each contributor brings the conversation back to the Bible and the gospel as the only source of true, enduring change.

ROBERT A. PETERSON

Salvation Accomplished by the Son The Work of Christ After writing and teaching on the subject for nearly thirty years, this beloved professor of theology presents a major volume on the atoning work of Christ. In this distinctive volume on the life of Jesus, Robert Peterson presents the biblical doctrine of Christ’s saving work in a fresh and comprehensive way. Peterson’s ability to explain the relationship between text and doctrine, to uncover connections that have eluded many others, and to organize the material in a way that is clear to seminarians and pastors and accessible to the layman, makes this volume a work to be noted. Peterson is as sound as they come, and his extensive preaching and teaching ministry enables him to make complex theological matters comprehensible to nonspecialists. Salvation Accomplished by the Son aims to glorify Christ by presenting the saving work of Jesus in greater scope than has previously been done, and to encourage Christians to worship and serve him. This book explains in detail what Christ has done to rescue us, both his deeds and the biblical pictures illustrating them. Offered here is a substantive, significant, and enduring treatise on a key Christian doctrine—the work of Christ.

Do Historical Matters Matter to Faith? A Critical Appraisal of Modern and Postmodern Approaches to Scriptures (Foreword by John Woodbridge) Equips Christians to defend the doctrine of inerrancy against a culture and academy ever skeptical of the Bible’s historical claims. Do Historical Matters Matter to Faith? offers a firm defense of Scripture’s legitimacy and the theological implications of modern and postmodern approaches that teach otherwise. In this timely and timeless collection of essays, scholars from diverse areas of expertise lend strong arguments in support of the doctrine of inerrancy. Contributors explore how the specific challenges of history, authenticity, and authority are answered in the text of the Old and New Testaments as well as how the Bible is corroborated by philosophy and archaeology. With contributions from respected scholars—including Allan Millard, Craig Blomberg, Graham Cole, Michael Haykin, Robert Yarbrough, and Darrell Bock—Do Historical Matters Matter to Faith? arms Christians with fresh insight, arguments, and language with which to defend Scripture’s historical accuracy against a culture and academy skeptical of those claims.

K. SCOTT OLIPHINT

God with Us Divine Condescension and the Attributes of God A theological study of the character of God and the way he relates to creation, both of which are uniquely revealed and explained in Christ. For the Christian mind seeking to understand the nature of God, one fundamental paradox poses a philosophical stumbling block: how can God be both a wholly independent, eternal being yet also an interactive force in the temporal plane of creation? The desire to harmonize God’s actions and his attributes has challenged laymen and scholars through the ages. In God with Us, K. Scott Oliphint finds an answer in the person of Jesus Christ incarnate—the manifestation of God and the cornerstone of creation. Where other theological efforts view the study of Jesus as simply one branch of a systematic approach, Oliphint puts a primary focus on the understanding of the Son of God as both the quintessential revelation of God’s character and the explanation of how he relates to us. This book leads the reader to think biblically about who God is and how he in his eminence can condescend to us in our finite surroundings. Oliphint’s unusual approach to the attributes of God will appeal to anyone desiring a biblical perspective on God’s nature, whether for academic reasons or personal advancement.

GERALD BRAY

God Is Love A Biblical and Systematic Theology This unique systematic theology, written for the average Christian, traces God’s love through all the major doctrines of the Bible. While there is no substitute for personal, faithful, and careful Bible reading and prayer, the Bible’s vast size and diversity can make distilling its truth a daunting task. Thus most Christians benefit from supplemental resources to help learn and apply what Scripture teaches. Renowned theologian, Gerald Bray has produced just such a resource in his new systematictheology.Thoughpackedwithrobustcontent,hewritesaboutthisvolume:“Theaim...istoreachthosewhowouldnotnormallyfindsystematictheology appealing or even comprehensible.” This volume is unique from others in that Bray traces the common theme of God’s love through the Bible categorically—from God’s love for himself and his creation to the cross as the ultimate expression of God’s love, among other categories. The centrality of God’s love in Bray’s theology reflects a deep conviction that the Bible shows us God for who he really is. This volume will be of interest to Christians seeking to grow in their faith.

RAYMOND C. ORTLUND JR.

Proverbs Wisdom that Works Series: Preaching the Word; R. Kent Hughes, gen. ed. Explaining the heart of Proverbs, Ray Ortlund shows how to receive the wisdom God offers to those who fear him. How exactly does one become wise? Pastor and teacher Ray Ortlund points out that the wisdom of God does not stand aloof, as if it were unattainable. Instead, he shows that wisdom graciously moves toward us, into our real world where we live and struggle day by day. Wisdom offers us her very best, if only we will listen. After all, “Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice,” and, if wisdom troubles herself to yell, there must be a reason to listen and a means to hear. Ortlund unpacks the book of Proverbs in twenty-one straightforward sermons, providing a biblical worldview that opens up the higher meaning of money, sex, and power, as well as that of the daily routines of an average life. Drawing relevant parallels from ancient culture to present day, he highlights the practical help Proverbs offers to normal people going through everyday life. Most importantly, Ortlund shows how the Proverbs point to Jesus and his counsel for the perplexed, his strength for the defeated, his warning to the proud, his mercy for the broken. With careful treatment of the Scriptures and uncomplicated language, Proverbs: Wisdom that Works fills the vacuum between the layman’s experience and the exegetical depth of many commentaries.

JAMES M. HAMILTON JR.

Revelation The Spirit Speaks to the Churches Series: Preaching the Word; R. Kent Hughes, gen. ed. James Hamilton shows the relevance of the book of Revelation, explaining the prophecies therein and their importance for all peoples. In the book of Revelation, God unveils the world as it really is, identifying an unseen spiritual war and announcing a very real day of judgment. We need to be convinced that Jesus is reigning as the risen King. We need to have him speak to the situations in our churches. We need to see how God will pulverize wickedness, obliterate those who oppose him, and set up his kingdom. Revelation has exactly what we need. Useful for personal study, as well as for preaching and teaching (with helpful charts and tables to highlight key themes and literary elements), the thirty-seven sermons in this volume have a clear structure: introduction, body, and conclusion. Hamilton successfully grabs the reader’s attention, raises awareness of a real need, and states the main point of the sermon text. In addition to explaining the meaning of each passage, Hamilton connects the main ideas to applicable analogies and actionable points. Revelation is a prophecy of epic proportions and Hamilton invites readers to love God and his people by expositing this revelation of Jesus, and to say along with the apostle John, “Come, Lord Jesus.”
