Second Ladies Team for Crossway A huge achievement this year was the addition of a second ladies team for Crossway. This had been in planning stages for a few years, but over the past summer a lot of work had been put in by the executive team to see this team come to fruition. It was a slow start for the girls, as the team developed and slowly added to their numbers. Thanks to the support of Steve (Courteney’s dad), Margaret (who tried to get to many of the games) and captain (Miriam), without whose help this team would not have got past the first few weeks. Next year we are looking forward to having Tim come on board with us as a dedicated coach and joining forces with Blackburn, to help further develop this united team.
UNITED JOIN OUR RANKS It was a bit of a family affair this year, with a few of the new recruits coming from within the Wilson clan! Even Jess (who lived with the Wilsons for a short time) was recruited into the team with a little persuasion! Right: Nicola & Jayne. Mother and daughter playing side-by-side, and loving every minute of it! David did often comment how Jayne seemed to outplay Nicola & Michelle…. showing age is no factor! Must be in the genes… !
Message from Miriam Everyone knows that it’s not about getting knocked down; it’s about how quick you are at getting back up and I must say, this has never been truer than for the Ladies United team. It was never about winning for us (and if you heard about some of our results you would know this to be true) – winning was only a bonus. For the Ladies United, this past year was about forming new friendships and bonds, learning from each other and building new skills together as a team.
One of my fondest memories was losing 19-1 to Glen Eira. It wasn’t the loss itself I remember, it was more so the second time we played them and we only lost 13-0. Instead of the girls being disappointed in yet another loss, they remarked instead at our improvement as a team and how we were able to hold them off this time by only losing 13-0. In sports and life, everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to be in first place. But the truth is it doesn’t have to be about winning. It’s about selfimprovement; about being better than you were the day before and about experiencing the highs and lows together as a team and supporting each other through that.

VICTORIAN CHURCHES FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
To bring glory to God through participation in a church oriented soccer competition. To promote Christian friendship between players, officials and supporters of participating teams. To foster the development of soccer skills and the understanding that it is of paramount importance that all games be played in the best spirit of Christian sportsmanship. PARTICIPATION As a means of local church outreach to the community, members will promote the participation of people from their local community as players, officials and supporters, irrespective of sex, nationality, race or age.

Fair Play Award Our biggest accomplishment this year was again in the Fair Play Awards. This is what we set out to achieve at the beginning of the season; for Crossway Soccer Club (as a whole, men & ladies included) to be one of the leading clubs in terms of Fair Play competition. Not only did we achieve this (coming second out of the all the clubs in the VCFA), but we can also be very proud of bringing home 3 x additional Fair Play Awards between the two ladies teams.
Ladies Firsts won the Fair Play Award for their division and also won the overall Best Team Fair Play Award (Out of 90 teams!). Fantastic effort! United Ladies also came runners up in the Fair Play in their own division. This is not an easy task especially during intense competition, but it shows what a great culture we have at the Crossway Club, that we uphold these values throughout competition. It is great to be with a club that plays in the true spirit of the game and promotes the message “for God through Sport�.

Premiers of Gwen Wright Shield Looking pretty in pink, to raise awareness of breast cancer. Thanks to the Blackburn Club for lending us the shirts for the day.
It was déjà-vu for the ladies, meeting Monbulk in the cup final for the second year in a row. This year Monbulk was back for revenge, but Crossway wasn’t about to hand it to them on a plate. A very physically tough game, which saw Fiona score an amazing goal putting Crossway in the lead 1-0. Monbulk didn’t back down and came back with one of their own. The final score was 1-1, which meant the ladies had to put all that training of penalty shots into practice. Outstanding efforts from Jamie saw Crossway victorious over Monbulk 7-6. A very tense time for all watching from the sidelines!

Seeing Double Fiona and Tania made quite the pair and even had the opportunity to help the Crossway Rovers out for a game! The boys didn’t know what hit them!! Rovers enjoyed having them along, especially with Tania scoring to help them win the match!

A team is only as good as it supporters, so we have to say a HUGE thank you to all those family and friends that came to support both of our ladies teams from the sidelines. An extra thanks to Steve Gough, Steve Fielding and Cat Shepherd for volunteering to run the lines throughout the season.
This year we were fortunate enough to have the sponsorship of ‘Strategix Training Group’ who donated hats and drink bottles for the ladies teams. This helped us to purchase the extra equipment and gear required for the second ladies team. Thanks Tania!

Michelle Wallace (captain) Michelle’s contributions on the field were only exceeded by those off the field. After a lot of hard work prior to the season, we saw the addition of a second ladies team. Her encouraging words and care for her teammates contributed to the spirit and moral of the team which saw another Fair Play Award for the Crossway Ladies.
Kat had one of her best seasons this year. Must have been the “newly married” touch! Thanks Ryan. Kat demonstrated her versatility by playing her usual left or right back, but also enjoying time in midfield and centre back and doing a fabulous job no matter where she was on the field! The team love having Kat’s encouraging and smiling face around to cheer you up.... Even when she can’t play due to injury or illness, she'll be there to support when able!
Ros Spargo Lisa Enstad
Ros started the season in her usual fashion, dominating the opposition in the midfield. Ros had a bit of a rough end to her season this year due to being very unwell and ending up in surgery.
We had the pleasure of Lisa joining us for pre-season and the first few games of the season.
Gabrielle Fielding Gabby had another great season of soccer, playing in both defensive and midfield positions. Even turning 18 this year and VCE exams, were not enough to take Gab off her game. It’s been a big year for Gabby, who was also successful in gaining a college scholarship to play soccer in USA. Look out America!
Kat Pham
A great goal-keeper on school exchange from Norway. Sadly she had to leave us to go back to Norway, but that didn’t stop David from trying to find ways to keep her in the country!!
Fingers crossed for next season, no more injuries or illness!!
Tiffany Hui It was great having Tiffany back again playing with us for another season. Her footwork, agility and speed saw her dominating the opposition on the wings. Taking everything in her stride, she even conquered the defense in left back!

Megz Rindfleisch Megz was a new recruit this season and became a valuable member of the team. Not just due to her speed on the wings, but she was also called upon “unofficially” for her physiotherapy skills in the case of injuries on the field. And of course we got to celebrate yet another engagement this season! Congrats Megz.
Jerusha Ho Another great season for Jerusha with her fancy footwork. She spent time playing up front with Fiona, mid-field and even on the wings at times. Regardless of which position Jerusha was found playing she always managed to run rings around the opposition, figuratively and literally.
Stephanie Head Steph was unable to play with us this season due to other commitments, but that didn’t stop her filling in for us on the odd occasion when needed! We look forward to playing with her again next year (fingers crossed!)
Fiona Bashford Fiona was back this year in her usual style. Top goal scorer again for the Crossway Ladies and just as passionate as ever! Fiona offered to help United out on occasions as a goal-keeper, taking some hard knocks in the process. Fiona’s motto: Play hard or go home! And she certainly lives up to it. On a positive note: no cracked ribs, broken thumbs, concussions or hospital admissions this season!!
Courteney Gough Courteney has been one of the few girls regularly attending training and has been available for selection every week. Not only has she been playing for United but she has also shown her support by coming and watching Ladies Firsts when able.
Bec Sutton It was wonderful to have Bec playing with us for another season. Her soccer skills saw her improving and even lending a hand to the United team on many occasions throughout the season. Thanks for being so flexible Bec! Towards the end of the season she even had a go at goal-keeper and impressed us all!

Stephanie Brockwell
Coming down from Ballarat each weekend, we were so glad to have Simone join our team halfway through the season. Her experience and positive attitude helped the team out through some of it's most difficult games.
Stephanie has also been another dedicated team member who has always showed up at training and games. Stephanie improved significantly throughout the season, contributing more and more to the United team. Stephanie showed that all the hard work at training pays off!
Miriam Achetraritei (captain)
Lauren Collins Lauren is so versatile and such a great team player. She stepped in goals several times throughout the season to help the team out and managed to nail that position well.
It was great to have Miriam back on board with Crossway this season. Miriam kindly offered to captain the United Ladies team and managed to juggle coaching/captaining and managing the team for most weeks. Miriam hadn’t lost her style... showing that “Miriam” style tackle in the midfield, letting the opposition know that she won’t back down and size is deceiving!!
Nicola Wilson It was great to welcome back another of our founding members of the Crossway Ladies. Despite having a break from soccer for a few years, Nicola showed us that she was back with a vengeance! The fastest striker in the entire competition “I've never seen anyone who could sprint so fast and still dribble the ball.” - Miriam

Sarah Smith
Tricia Canny
Welcome back Sarah!! It was lovely to have Sarah back on the field again after a few years break.
Tricia was a new player this season, joining the ladies firsts and giving a much needed boost in the midfield and out on the wings.
Sarah has always given encouragement and confidence to the girls who play defence with her. Her experience on the field has been a great addition and has always been valued as other players look up to her.
Nicole Mapledorm Nicole was a key defender at the start of the season and was definitely missed while she was out due to injury and illness. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope to have her back with the team next year.
Jess Keller Jess has also been a great team player. She's stepped up in goals for the team even when no one else wanted to do it.. Thanks Jess! Jess’s smiling face brings lots of fun to the game, no matter what the score or outcome is!
Tricia’s tenacity, footwork and ability to be in the right place at the right time led her to be a very valuable member of the team. Towards the end of season she was becoming known as “goal a game” Trish!
Tessa Pietsch Tessa has been a great contribution to the team and her skills have improved so much since starting with the team. She's a very versatile player having played in midfield and as a striker.
Merryn James Nice to have another left-footer join our ranks this season. Merryn has one of the best "throw ins" in the team and is a great defensive player.

Cat Shepherd Despite undergoing knee surgery prior to the season, Cat was a dedicated supporter and was eager to play as soon as her surgeon allowed… which just happened to be the last game of the season!
Jayne Wilson
Jayne has always been willing to assist and support the team, whether it be doing the drink bottles, washing the kit or just making sure everyone is having a good time on the field.
Daphne Panayotides Coming across from Blackburn, we were lucky enough to have Daphne join us. A marvellous defensive player who never takes her eyes off the ball. Definitely a win for us!
Jayne stepped up to take a position on the field this season and has never looked back!
Mel Chang Even though Mel only played a few games during the season (due to other exciting new commitments this year!) her experience on the field was invaluable.
Tracey Nel Tracey was back for yet another season, spinning circles around the mid-field. Although we did have to loose her during the middle of the season, we can look forward to celebrating Tracey & Bastian’s wedding in true soccer style ….

Yee Chan Yee was a great player. She was fast, had great ball skills and was good at judging the game. Unfortunately she didn’t continue to see the end of the season.
Tania Bashford It was great having Fiona’s twin sister Tania playing with us for a few games this season. Coming all the way from Brisbane, she made sure to leave her mark with managing to kick 3 goals in only 2 games!

Amy Teh
Faithful Jess was back for another season.
Amy has always been calm and composed and always leads by example when the team is in a difficult situation on the field.
Jess Fero
Her dominance in centre-back was always a welcome comfort to those of us in defence. Playing occasionally out of her comfort zone in midfield, Jess held her ground and overall had a good season.
Stepping down to help United, Amy has made a great contribution to the team this season. Thank you.
Jamie was fantastic in stepping up to goals this season following the departure of Lisa.
Jamie Sutton
Although enjoying a run on the field occasionally, Jamie was more often “saving the day” in goals. None better than the Gwen Wright Shield Final where Jamie played extraordinarily and won the match for the team!
Kari Presant Samantha Head Sam was back for yet another season. This season saw her fast speed and long throw-ins having a big impact on the game! Found usually in defense, it was great to have her on the team again.
Back from having a baby, Kari showed that nothing had slowed her down. Spending more time in defensive midfield, she showed that she hadn’t lost “the touch”. Now we just need to train little Verity to be one of our new recruits for next season!
Teresa Johnstone Teresa was a new recruit joining us this year. It was great to have her join the team lending a hand to the wings and even midfield. Unfortunately due to injury, Teresa didn’t get to play the full season with us. Hoping for a speedy recovery and a better season next year!!

Message from Michelle Looking back over the past few seasons, I wonder how we made it quite this far! I am continually amazed and impressed by the quality of skill and development of the first’s ladies team since 2008. If someone had told me in 2008 that as a team we would be bringing home any medals I would have been in shock to say the least. I want to give a huge thank you to both David and Margaret for the enormous amount of work that they both put in. Not only do they work hard each Saturday and during the week at training, but just as importantly behind the scenes. Their hardwork each week goes unnoticed by most of the team, but we wouldn't have a team or club without them! The effort that both Marg and David put in each week is more than equivalent to a fulltime job. Thank you so much for your dedication and generosity in giving up so much of your time to help us develop in our skill level, whilst fostering supportive friendships and community within the club. It has been an absolute pleasure to captain the ladies for the third season now and more importantly to be a part of an amazing group of ladies over the past 5 years. Although there are always ups and downs, it is the friendships made along the way and the sense of community that really makes it a pleasure each week. My hope is that as a club we continue to grow, reaching out to others and building relationships. It has been an absolute joy to see the United Ladies team get off the ground this year. With new and exciting changes on the horizon, I am eager to see what this change will mean for United Ladies next season!
